What are Volcanos?

A volcano is a

landform (usually a

mountain) where

molten rock erupts

through the

surface of the

planet

Volcanic Eruption

An eruption

begins when

pressure on a

magma

chamber forces

magma up

through the

conduit and out

the volcano's

vents

Project Overview

Teach 3rd grade GT students at John Tyson Elementary about volcanos.

Educated students about the structure of a volcano while introducing vocabulary words relative to volcanos and volcano eruptions.

We created a volcano model out of simple hobby products. Then used vinegar and baking soda to create a chemical reaction to simulate a volcanic eruption.

Serving the Community

We served Mrs. Crouch’s

3rd grade GT students of

John Tyson Elementary.

By educating students

with informative

knowledge about

volcanoes that they can

use as well as pass on; we

served the community of

Springdale, AR and future

generations.

Learning Objectives

Use project based learning to teach students about volcanoes.

Use the project activity to create a visual & interactive learning experience to help students learn about science by looking at volcanoes.

Teach students new science terms relative to volcanic activity.

Learning Objectives

Participate in the teaching/learning process based on observation and participation in K-12 schools.

Continue to develop effective oral communication skills

Used a variety of sources to locate, evaluate, and use information.

Improve communication skills

Organize a lot of information found in research.

Established appropriate leadership.

Reflect on personal experience, examine their beliefs and dispositions about teaching, and evaluate their perceptions of education and desire to choose teaching as a career.

Arkansas State learning

Standards

PS.6.8.1:

Model how “volcanos” motion and forces change Earth’s surface

ESS.8.6.1:

Identify and diagram the structures of a volcano

ESS.8.6.10:

Identify the effects of volcanic eruptions on Earth’s surface:

Methodology

Discussed and visually showed the

components that make up the structure

of a volcano.

Had students label volcano structures on

a blank volcano diagram from memory of

learned material.

Used a volcano model to demonstrate a

volcanic eruption.

Division of Labor & Timeline

Brian Stephenson - Project Contact, Eruption Demonstration, PowerPoint creation & presentation

Jesus Cordova – Activity Instruction, Images, PowerPoint presentation

Jeremy Spears – Model creation, Activity materials, Website, PowerPoint creation & presentation

Approximately 15 working hrs from beginning to completion of project.

Project Results

As a team we improved at working with others and to develop better team building skills.

Individually we developed as a person, helping to become comfortable with oral communication skills.

We gained a better understanding of how to put together a PowerPoint presentation and use many modern technologies available.

Further developed our organizational skills for future professional jobs.
