The site launched live dur- ing the 30th annual Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show in Indianapolis in early De- cember. “Dodge Garage consolidates all there is to know about the latest muscle car and racing enthusiast news into one comprehensive destination,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge Garage Gets Virtual Ford Motor Company has awarded $200,000 in funding, part of the Bill Ford Better World Challenge (BFBWC), to support two international projects to im- prove health and sanitation con- ditions in India and Mexico. The grants, which were given out last week. are included in Ford Motor Company Fund’s an- nual community improvement campaign that launched in 2015 as part of the 10th anniversary of the Ford Volunteer Corps, said Ford spokesman Todd Nissen. The challenge is jointly funded by the Ford Fund and Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford Mo- tor Company, Nissen said. The program works to give employee volunteers the opportunity to serve with community activists in places worldwide where Ford does business. It encourages em- ployees and community partners to submit ideas that will solve global problems including issues surrounding mobility, as well as the scarcity of food, water and shelter. “I am extremely proud of the work our employees are doing to bring about positive change around the world,” said Bill Ford. “Access to basic necessities is not something that can be taken for granted in many communi- ties, and these projects will have an immediate and positive im- pact on the quality of life for so many people.” In the rural district of Kancheepuram, India, just out- side of Chennai where toilets and private restroom facilities are nonexistent, the $140,000 grant will provide 100 residential SMART toilets in three villages for a total of 300 toilets, Nissen said. The SMART toilet facility is equipped with lighting, allows for hand washing, and provides twin pits for sustainable use and maintenance An education program for resi- dents on good hygiene and sani- tation practices. “In these rural villages, open defecation is the normal prac- tice,” said Jennifer Leonard, a Ford brake engineer who is man- aging the project. “This practice proliferates disease, increases child mortality rates, and in- creases a woman’s chance of be- ing attacked. Our hope with this program is to work to improve health conditions while offering people privacy, dignity and safe- ty.” Construction in Kancheepu- ram is slated to begin in January with planned completion in fall 2018, Nissen said. Installation of the toilets will be done using vol- unteer help from Ford employees at the Chennai plant and will be managed by Gramalaya, a non- profit in India that works to in- stall SMART toilets. Gramalaya, with 30 years of experience in sanitation programs, is dedicat- ed to helping India become an open defecation-free country. In Guayacan, Mexico, near Her- mosillo, potable water is a rarity. That means being a focused company. And in 2018, Barra said, GM will have new and improved products. Krebs then asked when GM got fully behind the idea of going all in with autonomous technology. “GM has a rich history con- cerning electric vehicles,” Barra said. “Even during our restruc- turing, we kept working on the Bolt. People are very satisfied to own a Bolt. That work led up to the Volt. That is another well-re- ceived and successful vehicle.” And after that success, Barra said, GM decided in 2015 to get really serious about an au- tonomous future. “GM will continue to have a leadership position in the indus- try concerning autonomous tech- nology,” Barra said. “But speed is critical in developing this tech- nology.” Barra was then asked why GM decided to go it alone when de- veloping Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technology. She said it does take a lot of different technologies to develop a true AV, but GM didn’t want to worry about who owns what In- tellectual Property (IP). with a number of suppliers butGM will own the tech. She againemphasized that speed of devel-opment is critical.When asked about NAFTA, Bar-

ra said that it’s almost 25 yearsold and that there are improve-ments that can be made to thetrade agreement. But anychanges must be made in a re-sponsible manner to avoid anyunintended consequences.Barra also said that GM likes

the idea of tax reform and that asof Dec. 11, the Senate and Housebills were still being worked on.Overall, she saw tax reform goingin a positive direction.Krebs said one of the big sto-

ries for 2017 has been sex dis-crimination and sexual harass-ment.Barra agreed, and said that the

most important thing GM can dois to create an environmentwhere all can be creative andreach their full potential.“I am chief diversity officer,”

Barra said. “Part of my job is tocreate a workplace of choice thatattracts new talent. It’s unaccept-able not to have standards thatprotect everyone. I want a work-place where people can speak upwithout fear of retaliation. I havechildren who will be entering theworkforce soon, and I want themto have an environment wherethey don’t have to worry aboutthis sort of thing.”It’s important, Barra said, that

people speak up with the expec-tation that they will be believedwhen reporting problems. Theold way of doing things is justnot acceptable.Krebs then asked about the re-

tail future of the auto industry.Barra said that Uber and Lyft

really only represent about 1 per-cent of the driving done today.

“Ride sharing only works invery specific way in places thatare heavily urban,” Barra said.“The owner/driver model of carownership will continue to existfor a long time to come. But theauto industry has to ask it willgrow in the future.“I am confident that dealers

will be able to do that.”Barra was then asked if she

agreed with Bob Lutz’ predictionthat in the future cars will be util-itarian and brands won’t matter.“No,” Barra said. “You have to

recognize that people will bringtheir phones into their cars. Techwill shape the vehicles of the fu-ture, but brands will matter.”The question of SUV/truck

popularity came up. Barra saidthat there will still be a place forsedans.“Our research shows that once

people get into an SUV, it’s hardto get them to go back to asedan,” Barra said. “But there is acore group of people who lovesedans and we will continue toprovide customers with whatthey want.”Krebs asked if GM was hiring.

Barra said yes. She noted thatabout 40 percent of the work-force has been with the companyfor less than five years.“We need software engineers,”

Barra said. “When we go to Sili-con Valley to recruit, the thingwe hear is that people want towork on something that is cool,something that will go to market.And we’ve learned that there is areal interest in coming to Detroit.People want to go to a placewhere they know they can makea difference. We even had youngpeople who came to Detroit andcreated their own video to showwhat people can do in the city.”Krebs then asked about what

now constitutes GM’s core busi-ness. Barra said that the Chevy

brand is very strong in SouthAmerica and that they have astrong dealer network there. Inthe United States, all four of GM’sbrands are doing will and in Chi-na Cadillac is growing as a strongbrand.“Brands are still important,”

Barra said. “Our focus is on that.When we talk about new technol-ogy, we can be talking aboutwhat’s coming in five years, butwe are also talking about what’scoming in two months, what’scoming next year. You will be sur-prised at what you see at the up-coming Detroit auto show.”Barra then took questions

from the audience of reporters.The first was about how in theold days, GM believed bigger wasalways better, but recently thecompany has left markets andsold off brands.Barra said that’s true, but it’s

vital that the company be a goodsteward of its investors’ capital.“The company is and has be-

come disciplined in not onlywhere it sells, but in what seg-ments it invests its money in,”Barra said. “If we are somewherewhere we don’t see a path toprofitability, or a chance for agood return on investment, wewill look for other areas wherewe can grow. We are no longer acompany where we plant a flagand try to be everything toeveryone. We are still looking forareas where we can grow and it’sstill important to be able to lever-age our scale of operations.”Should the opportunity arise

for GM to re-enter the Europeanmarket by being profitable, GMcould do that, Barra said. TheCadillac and Chevrolet brandsare already there, though not ingreat numbers.GM will remain in the core

business of selling cars for a longtime, Barra said. As new tech-

nologies develop, that mightchange. But the company will beled by customer preferences.When asked about the EV tax

credit, Barra said it’s important.Should credit disappear, it willdefinitely change the equationGM uses when making plans.“The cost of ownership of an

EV is an important part of howcustomers make decisions tobuy and EV,” Barra said. “We arestill invested in EVs and will workto drive the cost down.”

high wattage exterior streetlightfixtures with energy efficient,lower wattage LED lights whichcan now be remotely controlled.GM didn’t stop with outsidelights. The company replacedolder, inefficient interior fluores-cent lighting with energy efficientLED lighting at the OperationsEngineering Center, the VECPodium and the VEC East build-ing.They installed an energy effi-

cient reflective Cool Roof systemat the PPO building and event de-tected and repaired a major com-pressed air leak within the infra-structure, Parker said.Sean McCoy, Outreach manag-

GM as part of the utility’s largerefforts to work with its biggestcustomers to improve energy us-age. Part of what they did waswork with GM to centralize howenergy was distributed.

“We used to have plants andstaff all over the place sendingenergy to General Motors,” Mc-Coy said. “The information didn’tgo to a central location. We de-cided to tie everything togetherand have one dedicated engineermanage everything.“The approach has worked

well. And we’ve fostered a greatrelationship with General Mo-tors.”Glenn Barba, controller and

14,000 fewer tons of carbon diox-ide being emitted into the atmos-phere.“That’s the equivalent of re-

moving 2,700 Toyotas from theroad,” Barba said.

Winter is not coming, it’s al-ready here.

For much of the northernhemisphere, it’s cold outside,which means drivers need tothink more about traction, saidFiat Chrysler spokesman DaleJewett.

Whether it is just a light dust-ing or several inches of snow (inplaces such as Atlanta, they’repractically the same thing), send-ing drive torque to all fourwheels is desirable to keepthings moving on streets andhighways, Jewett said.

Many people who face theseconditions yearly opt for a vehi-cle with either all-wheel drive(AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD)for an extra level of capabilityand confidence.

“We hear you asking – AWD or4WD, aren’t they the samething?” Jewett said. “In general,yes. Both systems work to maxi-mize traction by distributingtorque to all four wheels. The dif-ference is in the level of controlover the torque management.

“We can illustrate that differ-ence with a closer look at thevarious 4×4 drive systems avail-able on Jeep vehicles.”

One note first, Jewett said. Noamount of enhanced tractionfrom the drivetrain improvesstopping ability on slick roads.People should Tailor their speedto the weather and road condi-tions, and increase the gap be-tween the vehicle ahead of you.Those vehicles people see spunout on the sides of the road?They didn’t heed that advice.

Now, in general, Jewett said,AWD systems are always activeand automatically share torqueamong the axles when low-trac-tion conditions are detected,while 4WD systems are part-time

and need to be engaged by thedriver via a lever or button in thecockpit.

Auto-engaging systems can befound in cars, such as the DodgeCharger and Challenger, and inSUVs, such as the Jeep Rene-gade, Compass and Cherokee(Active Drive) and the JeepGrand Cherokee (Quadra-Tracand Quadra-Drive). On the otherhand, part-time systems are typi-cally used on heavy-duty andtruck-based vehicles, such as theJeep Wrangler and Ram 1500 (afull-time 4WD system is an optionon the Ram 1500).

One feature of auto-engagingsystems, Jewett said, such as Ac-tive Drive, is it helps save fuel bysending torque to both axles on-ly when needed. Some versions,such as Active Drive II, add a Lowrange for enhanced performanceat low speeds over extremelyrough terrain.

At other times, Jewett said theAWD system sends torque to on-ly one axle and disconnects theother axle drive components toreduce drag on the drivetrain.

“There are drivers who don’talways need the full impact of a4WD system and want to controlwhen it is engaged, based on theroad and driving conditions,”

Jewett said. “Those systems arefeatured on vehicles such as theJeep Wrangler (Command-Tracand Rock-Trac) and the Ram1500 pickup. With a part-time4WD system, the drive torque istypically split 50/50 between thefront and rear axles. Locking dif-ferentials in the axles can help di-rect torque to wheels with moretraction.”

DETROIT (AP) – Proposals arebeing sought to redevelop twonow-vacant Detroit buildings in-to mixed-income apartments.

The city and the Detroit Build-ing Authority say work on LeePlaza and the Woodland Apart-ments buildings could help spurdevelopment in their respectiveneighborhoods.

Lee Plaza is near Detroit’s NewCenter area and had about 200units. The city is asking $295,000for the building and land.

Woodland Apartments is a 4-story, 44-unit building north ofdowntown. The city is lookingfor developers to renovate thebuilding or demolish it and rede-velop the site.

But the ride-hailing companydisclosed that in some cases, thehackers got location informationfrom the place where peoplesigned up for Uber, as well asheavily encoded versions of userpasswords.

On Nov. 21, Uber disclosedthat names, email addresses andmobile-phone numbers of 57 mil-lion drivers and riders had beenstolen. In a letter to four Republi-can senators led by Commercecommittee Chairman JohnThune of South Dakota, the com-pany says that Mandiant, the se-curity firm, found 32 million ofthose are outside the U.S. and 25million are inside.

Of the total, 7.7 million aredrivers, mostly in the UnitedStates, and hackers got driver’slicense numbers for 600,000 ofthem, according to the letterfrom new Uber CEO Dara Khos-rowshahi.

The ride-hailing company alsosaid it has not seen evidence offraud or misuse of data taken inthe breach, which lasted morethan a year before being dis-closed. Two employees werefired for not disclosing the theftto “appropriate parties,’’ the let-ter said.

The hackers emailed Uber’sU.S. security team anonymouslyon Nov. 14, 2016 telling themabout the breach and demandinga payment.

Uber tracked down the breach

in private cloud data stored onAmazon’s web services and shutdown access, which camethrough a “compromised creden-tial,’’ the letter said.

The security team agreed topay $100,000 to the hackers foran agreement to delete the data,and later tracked down the hack-ers’ real names. Both signed doc-uments assuring that the stolendata was destroyed, Khosrow-shahi wrote. Team membersfound that the hackers firstgained access on Oct. 13, 2016,and there was no further accessafter Nov. 15, 2016, the lettersaid.

Uber notified the U.S. Attor-ney’s offices in San Franciscoand Manhattan, as well as othergovernment agencies, on Nov. 21of this year, but it’s not clearwhether any criminal investiga-tion has been started. Neither of-fice confirmed nor denied an in-vestigation.

Uber installed additional pro-tections to stop hackers, includ-ing a two-step authentication forone of the services that washacked, the letter said.

In other news, a recent letterfrom the U.S. Attorney's officeconfirms the Justice Departmenthas opened a criminal investiga-tion connected to allegationsthat a former Uber executivestole self-driving car technologyfrom a Google spin-off to help theride-hailing service build roboticvehicles.

The letter unsealed Dec. 13 bya federal judge marks the JusticeDepartment's first acknowledge-ment of the probe.

The criminal investigation wasmentioned in court hearings twoweeks ago, but the Justice De-partment had declined to com-ment.

BEIJING (AP) – China’s autosales were flat in November com-pared with a year earlier, leavingtotal purchases in the world’sbiggest market up an anemic 1.9percent for the first 11 months of2017, an industry group reportedMonday.Chinese drivers bought 2.6 mil-

lion sedans, SUVs and minivans,according to the China Associa-tion of Automobile Manufactur-ers. Total vehicle sales, includingtrucks and buses, edged up 0.7percent to just under 3 millionvehicles.Chinese auto sales have strug-

gled this year after a temporarytax cut boosted 2016’s growth to15 percent. Sales contracted inApril and May before growingfeebly in recent months.That weakness is a setback for

global automakers that look toChina to drive future revenue,though some have grown fasterthan the market, taking sharefrom Chinese and other rivals.

In November, SUV sales rose8.9 percent over a year earlier to11 million, while sedan purchas-es shrank 4.8 percent to 12.2 mil-lion. For the first 11 months ofthe year, sales totaled 22.1 mil-lion.Chinese demand has weak-

ened as economic growth slowedand Beijing and other majorcities tightened restrictions onownership to curb smog andcongestion.Sales by Chinese domestic

brands overall rose 5 percent to1.2 million vehicles, according toCAAM. Their share of the marketexpanded by 1.6 percentagepoints to 45.8 percent.• General Motors Co., which

competes with Volkswagen AGfor the status of China’s mostpopular automaker, said sales bythe company and its Chinesemanufacturing partners rose 13percent from a year earlier to418,225 vehicles.• Ford Motor Co. sales fell 8

percent to 117,593 vehicles. Year-to-date sales were off 6 percentat just under 1.1 million.
