What with hay, sheep shearing and one thing and another life has been pretty full this fortnight. Up our way, the wool was only just rising on the 19th June, which is very late. The ram butted each sheep after i t had been shorn and generally raised Cain. Maybe he thought their wool was. too low cut or something. We have seen human husbands put on very much the same kind of act over their wives'new dresses. We have a letter from Rev.J.G.G.Bompas about a Liquor Store on Salt Spring. He writes: "I should like to ask a question regarding the proposed "Liquor Store for Ganges. I believe most people will agree that the citi- zens of Canada are consuming too much alcohol. I understand our medical ''men say that the general health of our people would be better if we did "not drink so much. Compare what we spend on drinks with what we spend on "education, and how can it be maintained that we are not wasting too much "money on alcoholic beverages? If these assumptions are correct, Sir, how, be said that the opening of a liquor store interests of our community on Salt Spring "in the name of reason, can i t "in Ganges will be in the best "Island?" We hope to have some further news in this issue on this subject. MAYNE ISLAND. Monday evening 11th June witnessed a large and representitive gathering at the Community Hall to do honour to Dr T.E.Roberts on his re- tirement from practice after sixteen years on Mayne Island. Mr. W.H. Salmon in presenting to the doctor a set of golf clubs, the gift of the Community, paid tribute to the untiring devotion to duty, and the friendly relations which have existed during Dr. Roberts's term of office. Dr. Roberts in replying thanked all concerned for their thoughtful gift which he considered most appropriate seeing that he first heard of the Mayne Is- land vacancy on the golf course at Point Grey. He related further how he originally came for six months only, but liked the island so much that he stayed for sixteen years, and hoped in retirement to continue living in this locality. Mrs Mabel Foster then presented Mrs Roberts with a set of chinaware. Refreshments were then served followed by a dance: altogether a successful, evening. SALT SPRING. Pioneers' Reunion Day_. 21June. The impression given by this day was one of a blue sky and sea, green grass and crowds of people in a holiday mood laughing and talking under the trees of Harbour House grounds. People came from a l l the Gulf Islands, from Vancouver Island and from the mainland, some, the Purvis family, from as far away as Oregon. The Sidney Junior Band was there with black trousers, white shirts, bow ties and scarlet & black capes, and with it were the majorettes in clothes of ' YOUR HOUSE INSURED AGAINST FIRE FOR EVER FOR ONE $3o.
