Date: May 3, 2017Time: 1 pmPlace: St. Andrew’s by the Sea Methodist Church 2001 Calle Frontera, San Clemente 92673Subject: Soil Speaker: Laura Bard Soil is the key to success for any gardening endeavor and may possibly be part of the solution to the global warming problem. At our May meeting our own Laura Bard will discuss soil texture, biology, and amendments (the good, the bad, and the ugly). What a great way to start the growing season learning more about the importance of good soil. Laura was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She indicates she is part salmon, part geoduck, permanently hydrated, caffeinated, and intimately familiar with Gore-Tex and blue tarps. Her early education included a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and science has always been a focus for her. She sees change as good and says that her family experienced a big one moving to Southern California. Gardening, which once was her soul-enhancing hobby, became a focus, an object of study, and an avocation. Community college certificate programs propelled her from gardening and opened up the bigger worlds of horticulture and design. As a result, she has a passion to know and do more with the land, with plant material, and to help foster sustainability any way she can

In Suzi’s absence Dolly Latteier facilitated the preparation of materials. Volunteers Tom Benton, Simone Costes, Bette Langford, and Carol Luetz assisted the eager RIO clients in making hanging cards with either a chick, a lamb or a bunny on the front. The activity got everyone into the Easter spirit. In May, for our last RIO craft of this season, we will be doing another spring activity. Volunteers will meet at Suzi Klickstein’s house to prepare the materials on Wednesday, May 10, at 11am. Please note the change from the usual day and time of our preps. Then we will meet at the RIO the following Wednesday, May 17, at 12:45 pm, to guide the wonderful RIO folks in making a colorful spring craft, and to say good bye for this season. Please contact Suzi at [email protected] if you have any questions.

“The Beauty of the Butterf y”

Our annual GardenFest was held on Saturday, April 8. It was a great success with the plant sales at over $2500 and the flea market at over $700. Thanks to all the garden club members, husbands and sons who donated their time, vehicles, horticultural expertise, plants and muscle to make the event a huge success. We had some great vendors this year that I hope will come back next year. The community organizations that had tables were Master Gardeners, City of San Clemente Water Conservation, Tower Gardens, Essential Oils and the Rose Society of Saddleback Mountain. We also had SCGC members help with Blue Birds and butterflies, children’s activities and a popcorn machine. Saddleback Jr. College sent docents that were very helpful in the plant sale area along with our very own Laura Bard. They were able to assist our customers with their numerous questions. Thank you to our sponsors Seaside Growers, Bemus Landscape, Inc., Plant Depot and Shore Gardens. They all were very generous with their plant donations. Our winners for our Funky Container contest this year were: 1st place Mystery Funky Lady, 2nd place was Mary Mohr and 3rd place was Bertie Lloyd. The San Clemente Art Association winners this year were 1st place Daisy Daze! By Patricia Hoskins 2nd place Flowers Make Me Smile by Mary Scott and 3rd place Fleur–de-lis by Rose Walker. Thank you to all of our volunteers that made this GardenFest fabulous. We appreciate you!

fromWeej Baggaley When finding a place in your garden for your special new plant, think about what might be raining onto it from above. No, not raindrops. I have two healthy, beautiful chard plants that I’ve been eating from for months now. However, every time I struggle to remove the spent sunflower seed shells and free “guano” from its crinkly leaves and stalks before I eat it, I rue anew my decision to place those plants so close to my birdfeeders. My birds are messy! Some trees are messy, too, raining dead leaves or pollen tassles or little fruits on everything below them. You know those sharp succulents that seem to funnel all your garden’s detritus down their spiny leaves to the base of the plant? And then it’s murder clearing that stuff out. Don’t plant those below your messy trees, and your gardening life will be easier. I should know, because I chose the difficult route. Don’t be dumb like me!
