A reading from COBALT BLUE, a novel by SACHIN KUNDALKAR, followed by a discussion with the author & JERRY PINTOIn the June 2013 session of PEN@Prithvi, we present Sachin Kundalkar’s novel, Cobalt Blue. Published by Mauj Prakashan in 2000, it has been translated from the Marathi by Jerry Pinto and published by Penguin Books India. Cobalt Blue revolves around the Joshi family’s mysterious lodger, who has no last name, no family or friends, no past and no future. Both the Joshi siblings, Tanay and Anuja, are attracted to him. He disappears, leaving behind emotional cataclysm for the siblings; the novel’s readers receive a finely shaped double narrative of heterosexual and homosexual love.

Ever wondered ‘WHY’ the sweet taste of jalebis or gulab jamuns make you feel so happy, whereas when you have to gulp that awfully bitter medicine down your throat (or remind yourself of ‘karela’) you cringe beyond recognition? Ever thought ‘WHY’ some people like their food all spiced-up and hot, some others like too much salt in their food while some like their meals unbearably sweet? In this session we will explore some of these WHYs. We’ll also learn about the range of things that goon in the mouth and the brain when you enjoy your happy meals at McDonald’s and why we enjoythe taste of things that our parents forbid us from eating!
