A Word From Tim Stuart

Relax, That’s No Mirage ...

2 VKN – VIDEO KING NETWORK SPRING 2015

N o need to rub your eyes. It’s not a mirage. There really is a riverboat in the middle ofthe desert, although it’s dry-docked. Butfrom a far, in the extreme heat, it may behard to decipher, since they cleverly

painted the rocks outside blue to resemble water, perhapsan oasis effect to help relax the mind.

And, while historically many have sought refuge byboat, the Riverboat Bingo in Surprise, Ariz., actually doesprovide refuge to many – in a similar sense.

In addition to its Bingo operation, Riverboat Acres has11 acres of land used for fund-raising purposes, whichsupport A New Leaf’s homeless and domestic violenceshelter programs in Maricopa County.

Established more than 40 years ago, this human serviceagency has been able to help an average of 19,000 clientsand residents annually through a myriad of shelters, programs and services at no cost to those who qualify –

including youth services, foster care, outpatient counseling and affordable, supportive housing.

Besides the main building, designed as a riverboat, the propertyoffers RV storage, an indoormeeting/event facility, a covered-pavilion, which seats 200, two woodengazebos, a fenced tennis/basketballcourt and “The Captain’s Galley,”the on-site café.

To learn more about Riverboat Acres – which usesVideo King’s equipment to launch its Bingo operations –it didn’t take a ship-to-shore call to find the gentlemen incharge of this rig.

Robert Ryan, the Riverboat’s program manager, alongwith Douglas Rowland, the assistant manager, who gavethe following “411,” could both be found “on deck.”n When was Riverboat Bingo established: In 2000,approximately 16 years ago.n Whose idea was it to build a riverboat in the desert:The previous owners used the Riverboat to sell antiques.n Where is it located: Two miles west of the 303 on BellRoad. We are located on the north side of Bell.n What is the area known for: Originally Surprise was aretirement community. Now we see the Surprise becoming acommunity for families with a large number of activities forpeople of all ages, including Bingo.n How often is Bingo played: Riverboat has 10 Bingosessions per week. Two sessions at 11 a.m. on Tuesday andThursday; and two sessions at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sun-day. We also have six sessions in the evenings at 6:30 p.m.every evening except Wednesdays.

Poof, like magic, a game idea, out of the blue, flashed into his head. Thunderstruck, the gameshow designer/entertainer/MC, add to that pro-fessional magician, instantly dropped what hewas doing, stopping in his tracks.

Yes, he’s a man of many, many hats ... Amped and fueledby inspirational adrenaline, he quickly laid out a rough ren-dition onto a board game and presented it to one of the bestjudges as to what’s fun or not, a youngster, his daughter,Madison, who was 6 at the time.

Encouraged by her enthusiasm, StephenKaplan, 53, also known as “Doktor Strange”and most recently Mr. Bingotainment, thendesigned a board game, based on his concept, ultimately known as “Amazing Bingo: The BingoGame,” and rushed it out to market.

Now, several years later, he’s launching a newedition, pegged “The Strategy Game With The Bingo Premise,”adaptable for major fund-raisers and tournament play.Or as one early reviewer put it:“‘The (Amazing) Bingo Game’ brings a fresh, innovative

approach to a well-known, much-loved pastime. No longerrestricted to ‘random luck,’ ‘The Bingo Game’ carries ele-ments of challenge and strategy that will captivate playersof all ages,” The Bingo Ombudsman had said.Or, perhaps better yet, from the mouth of babes:

“Way to go, Uncle, even I like it,” said his nephew, then age 18.And much of his success has been lit-

erally a roll or should we say new spinof the dice. (More on that later ... )

Or as Kaplan, the ultimate showman, might say it. There’s no sleight of the hand ladies and gents, it will

take skill to win this game. So don’texpect any rabbits out of a hat ...

“Imagine – (if you will) –finally going after the numbersyou need for Bingo, no morehoping Lady Luck to draw it outof a Bingo machine,” he explained.

Players simply roll his patented“Slap Dice” to move through a maze-like game board, seeking numbersneeded for Bingo, found on the game’s Bingocards. That’s where the term ‘A-maze-ing Bingo,’ get it,he said, comes in.

However, the objective is the same as the traditionalBingo game. By following some simple rules, along withunique landing spots, the players will compete to get Bingo, without giving it to their opponents first.

Like in life, it’s best not to bank everything on sheer luck.“It is just you, using your own skills, to get to your num-

bers. Everything needed comes with the game, including 25

Bonus Feature A Win-Win For Everyone!

OMNI Automates Progressive Prizes!

J ackpot! Here’s a prizedfeature, that’s quite pro-gressive in terms of Bingomanagement systems.OMNI,™ “The Total Solu-

tion,” can now manage and updateyour progressive prizes automatically.

In case you haven’t heard,OMNI is Video King’s revolutionary,MICS compliant Bingo managementsystem, sought for its supreme track-ing ability, among other things.

A win-win for everyone, OMNI’s newProgressive Prize module is just the lat-

est in a series of featureswhich keep youreye on theultimateprize – yourbottom line. Here’s how

it it works, based on data from Shannon Galli,

a member of VideoKing’s Research& DevelopmentTeam in Winnipeg,

steering the developmentof the OMNI system.

Progressive PrizesA progressive prize builds over

time until it is awarded. Halls offerprogressives to boost card sales – asthe prize builds, so, too, does playerexcitement, increasing sales as play-ers try to improve their chances ofwinning the big prize.

Bingo halls can have multipleprogressives building at the sametime. The presentation of these prizesto the players is important as it helpsbuild the excitement for the games.

In order to fund such a largeprize – without taking a big hit toprofits for the session in which it'sawarded – the operator typically setsaside some of the proceeds from thesession/game every day. OMNI helpsyou manage all of this and more!

OMNI’s ‘Prize’ Module The new OMNI Progressive Prize mod-

ule manages your progressive prizes. First, you tell the system how to

set aside money into each prize. It can do so based on a percent-

age of sales for the session; a specificgame; or simply use a fixed amount.

You can do this set up yourself ifyou like, or contact our 24/7 Help Desk, who will be happy to assist.

On a daily basis, OMNI does allthis math and accounting for you witha single press of a button!

In addition to automating progressive prizes, doing all the math for you,OMNI’s new module can also export the prize data to digital signage(see sample above) or be printed on a Prize Board handout to give to

players to help build excitement before the games begin.

re-usable, punch-out Bingo cards,” hesaid. And, to make it even more inter-esting, he added another twist ... The game’s “Slap Dice,” invented byKaplan himself, have six sides, one diewith two hands and the other die withtwo faces – to either help or hinder play.

But the real beauty, he said, is virtu-ally anyone of any age, Bingo ornon-Bingo players alike, would

enjoy the game. And, any casino or

Bingo facility, with a minimum order, can have a custom game made, suchas “(Name Your Venue) Edition ofAmazing Bingo,” complete with logoson the game board, to use as VIP gifts, retail items and prizes, he said.

Whether he has magical powers or not,the fact is Kaplan – based on decades ofexperience – understands games.

Heralded as a foremost leadingauthority on Bingo-related entertain-ment, not only is he the creator of theworld's first Bingo strategy game andsome original new game shows, butfirst to bring Cosmic Bingo, with hisown spin, to Canada.

A professional consultant to theBingo industry for years, he also con-ducts seminars at leading gaming andBingo conferences on how to enhanceBingo virtually anywhere and can alsobe found in elementary schools through-out British Columbia for a companycalled “Classroom Expeditions,” wherehe entertains and educates students, grades 5-7.

And in his spare time, the father oftwo (no he had no known clones) MCsat the River Rock, the No. 1 casino inBritish Columbia, stages his own

Not only do LEDs run about 25degrees F cooler than incandescentbulbs, but use only .56 watts vs. 2.8watts of electricity, saving you moremoney in the long run.

And, if that doesn’t shed enoughlight on their benefits, consider this:

Everyone who knows me person-ally knows I dislike the cold. Maybeone day I’ll live in a place onceagain where there will be greengrass for Christmas. It reminds meof my first, so-called “winter” inItaly. It was the beginning of De-cember, oranges were on the trees,I looked up at my dad asking, “Is itgoing to snow for Christmas?” hesimply replied with “probably not.”You can imagine the look on myface then.n How Cold Does It Actually Get:I think it was last year or twoyears back. I try to not rememberthings like this.Winnipegreached a record of -55 degreesF, “Mars Cold” they say, and letme tell you, it’s so cold at thispoint, there’s no time to think, but try to stay warm and yes, hopefully your car starts.n Did You Ever Play Bingo Be-fore: Funny thing about Bingo is,it’s been a tradition in my familyfor years. During the Christmasseason, after hours and hours ofdinner time, my family bringsout the Bingo game, in Italiancalled “Tombola.” In comparison, it’s identical to90-number Bingo. We play formoney, each card usually is 25cents, and there are differentpots of money for each Bingopattern match. Prizes are setup by having two numbers in asingle row, then three, four andfive numbers, then finally thefull card. This leads to hours ofentertainment and competitionbetween family members. Between each session we taketurns being the caller. One thingto mention that’s different thannormal Bingo play is, the callercan also win.n Your Impression Of BingoNow: I never would have thoughtthat Bingo was this huge. I lovethe excitement it bring the play-ers. What gets me the most isthe organization it takes when aparticular hall has a bash, allthe additional hardware thatneeds to be shipped, things likeadditional handsets or even anextra POS for sales, and need toensure any promotions and POSbutton pricing are correct.

nightclub acts and hosts fund-raisersand several other special events.

But he claims his intro to Bingowas more fluke than fate.

“I encountered it in the mid-’90sthrough the entertainment side,” saidKaplan, then a young game showdesigner at the time.

While at a convention in London –where concepts of game shows, Bingoand the lottery combos swirledon both sides of the pond – asone would say – one associationled to another, with Kaplan ulti-mately shooting a pilot show.

“Nothing happened, but I fell inlove with Bingo,” he said, of the wholeTV game show experience.

But when asked about magic, theVancouver native said, it had him at hello– to borrow an oft-repeated movie quote.

“My father did the lighting fora local community center. I gotcalled up (on stage) every timea magician would appear. Ithought my dad arranged it, buthe didn’t,” he said.

When he was 11, Kaplan took acourse in magic at the communitycenter. The following summer, whenthe family took a camping trip, therewas an open barn show, where he gotthe chance to perform his tricks.

Bitten, or should we say smitten,he said, “after the first show, first ap-plause, first laughter nothing was evergoing to change my direction or career.”

Fast forward, years later, Kaplan wasworking as a DJ in a nightclub and onenight decided to shake things up a bit.

“During the Sunday slow shift, there were only about 10 to 15 peoplein the club. I started doing games tomake it more fun. Mixed trivia, physical challenges,” he said.

Soon he had a following, andother bars caught wind of hisact. “It was really fun, and Ideveloped more and moregames,” Kaplan, finding himselfbooked and high in demand, had said.

Games included “Wanna Bet?”played with giant dice and giantcards; “Poker Cents,” an interactivelottery-style game, made for electron-ics; and “Gambler’s Paradise,” hisfirst boxed game.

“I learned all the things not to doon a board game. But might revise itfor an electronic game,” he said, stilltoying with that idea.

As for “Doktor Strange” andhis various comedy acts, Kaplan, like many, draws his inspiration fromdeep within his childhood well.

There was a uniquecharacter in MarvelComics, known as

“Doctor Strange,”whoserves as the SorcererSupreme – the primaryprotector of Earth against magicaland mystical threats, he said.

Or as Kaplan, with boy-like glee, tells it: “He was a surgeon whose handis paralyzed. He travels to Tibet, visitsa wizard and is made to be a SorcererSupreme. I like magic. His name wasStephen. My name is Stephen, too. It isa classic fit,” he said, in his quick-fireway of speaking. Whereas DoctorStrange’s universes collided in thecomic legends, so did Kaplan’s – alsoin a manner of speaking ... While at aClass II Bingo seminar, Kaplan waspresenting “Your Bingo Is Boring,”offering tips on how to engage a crowd.

Just so happened all the comput-ers at the casino crashed, affectinghundreds of players. Known for hismagic, Kaplan, who often carried hisbag of tricks, he was asked to enter-tain, giving him another dramaticelement to help wow the crowds.

While there he learned of CosmicBingo, where he decided to take thisalmost disco style, typically late-night,black light game to a whole new level.

Working in conjunction with theBritish Columbia Lotteries, Kaplanbecame highly sought again, this timeto develop other Cosmic Bingo in facil-ities around the world.

“It was a runaway hit. I have lostcount of how many events I did,” he said.

While most magicianswon’t reveal their tricks, theman who seems to still marvelat life, will say this:

“I love to host. It’s fun to let goand have fun,” said Kaplan, who alsodeveloped a mobile version of theCosmic game. “I like to intersperseit with mini games. It gives everyonea chance to win.”

Which may also be the secret to the“Amazing Bingo’s” success, recentlystaged for large-scale tournaments.

“Geared toward players, between8 and 108, the game is wholly andcompletely original,” he said.

“No other game plays like ‘Amaz-ing Bingo’ or offers the gaming chal-lenge that it does. It has a familiarname, yet totally original game play.It is multi-generational and spans thegaps with incredible ease.

“It is the game that everyonewants to play with everybody,”sounding like the perfect pitch man.

And instant presto, another surprise. It has an educa-tional component as well.“It’s the perfect game for classrooms everywhere.

This game teaches youngpeople everything from counting

to spatial and pattern recognition. It teaches them co-operative, competi-tive and most importantly interactiveplay. This is the game every classroomshould add to their collection of qualitygames,” he said.

But seeing is believing ...Check out Kaplan’s Web site:

www.thebingogame.com, which fea-tures video links, reviews, as well as“Tournament In A Box (TIAB),”containing a guide and everythingyou need to stage a successful,fund-raising event, using his game.

“The inaugural tournament of‘Amazing Bingo’ was held Nov. 2 inVancouver. This first one was to thebenefit of ‘The Children's WishFoundation,’ a great organization.

“The success of this tournamentshows that not only is this a great newgame, it is also a fun, uniqueway to raise funds,”he said.

However, tocontact Kaplan, best to e-mail himat [email protected] –before he disappears ...before his next act!

There’s no sleight of the hand,‘Amazing Bingo’ fits nicely in the

palm of your hand in its new, ziplock pouch, complete with all

the pieces needed to play.

Latest TechnologyEstablished in 2007 with more

than 20 years experience, Gamecoreoffers supplies for electronic Bingo,Bingo consumables, novelties andhigh-stakes, pull-tab designs and

payouts throughout the country totribal locations. Located in Minnesota,Gamecore has been distributing VideoKing products for just over four years –for both charitable and native sites.

“Over the past seven years Gamecorehas worked with numerous companiesoffering similar products within the elec-tronic Bingo industry, and it must be saidthat Video King has won me over!” saidJoshua Ernst, company owner.

“Video King’s products are stable, reliable, and the support is not onlyfriendly but very knowledgeable.

Communication betweenthe distributor andcustomers is by far the

best I have exper-ienced,” he said. “The difference

that I have experienced is how VideoKing's system is truly all-in-one. Having the ability to control your Bingo

consoles, handsets and POS's from onelocation on the network has truly been ablessing for servicing. This allows me andthe customer to see the ‘Terminal List’contained in the OMNI system anddetermine if there are any issuesbefore sales begin. This feature givesease of mind to the facility that thesystem is functioning properly.

“As a distributor I want the bestfor my customers, and Video King hasnailed it and continues to proceed withnew ideas and products. If you are look-ing for new Bingo flashboards, checkout the new ‘Triple Play’ digital customflashboards that Video King developed, along with the new Android tablet (theCHAMP-e) Bingo device,” he added.

“Being in the gaming industrywe always want to see the newestand latest technology. Bringing newand younger players to Bingo is impor-tant, and Video King recognizes that.

“Video King constantly strives to addnew features and devices that youngergenerations can relate to. They are en-suring that our industry stays healthyand viable for the future,” he said.

Industry Pioneer“Do you know where Guam is?” asks

Primo Caburian, who helped popularizeBingo in his home-land. He offersa more pictorial, yet historicalaccount ofBingo, whichraises moneyfor Pacific Islandmissions, and hisassociation with Video King there.

“Guam is a paradise island in thePacific, a tourist destination for mostlyJapanese, Chinese, Koreans, Microne-sians, Filipinos and many other neigh-boring islands. It is a tropical island, abundant with pristine beaches thatlure the tourist to come and enjoy theplentiful sunshine, found almost year-round,” he said.

“Many tourists come to Guam to per-form their marriage vows, the westernChamorro style, where they enjoy their

honeymoon in the island’s beautifulhotels. Bingo games in Guam areone of the favorite pastimes of itssenior citizens. With 19 villages

(districts) there are 11 senior cen-ters that play Bingo. It enhances theirlives, played as a hobby for many, rather then a gambling activity, as

written in the laws of Guam.“There are currently three

commercial Bingo halls that playbig Bingo, where regular pay-offsare $2,500, and special games are

$5,000, $10,000 or up to $80,000,during Bingo Bonanza.

“One notable Bingo hall, thePangasinan Bingo in Guam, is the‘Home of the Lil’ Champ.’ It is a pio-neer in the Bingo industry, founded in1984 by members of a nonprofit Pan-gasinan organization – under thepresidency of myself, Primo Caburian.

“As the ‘Father of PangasinanBingo,’ I thought of a responsible wayto raise funds for our community proj-ects. I then ventured to bring in Bingosupplies from Video King, after procur-ing a business license to make Bingoavailable in Guam and the NorthernMarianas Island.

“Because of the love for Bingo byour manamko (senior citizens) and thevigilant members of Pangasinan Bingo,it has grown to amazing heights, makingcountless community donations and stu-dent scholarships, all published in thepages of our local “Pacific Daily News.”

“As we in Guam now enjoy the bless-ings, I would be remiss if I do not acknowl-edge the untiring efforts of my successorsand members of the Pangasinan Bingoafter my two terms as president.

“For their unsurpassed efforts interms of community-donated projects,I wish to recognize the succeeding pres-idents, particularly Ret. Maj. Vic Rivo, current president of FOPOG (Federa-tion of Pangasinanses on Guam.)I am sure that there are many morePangasinanses, who contributed tothe success of this Bingo.

“It all started when Lil’ Champ, this handheld Bingo machine fromVideo King, was introduced to

FOPOG in 2008 by its distributor. There were six Bingo halls competingin Guam at that time, and FOPOGtopped them all. The launch of ‘Lil’Champ,’ with its jumpy mascot, tookcharge, closing down the other halls.

“Thanks to the ever-ready supportof Video King’s Sales Manager PeggyHansen and its 24-hour help desk, theLil’ Champ is now the favorite machineof Bingo players. It is so compact that itis also compatible with all the POS com-ponents installed to the Bingo console.Very simple to operate, it is why playersloved to play Bingo at FOPOG,” he said.
