Recorder’s Roll Call

Jim Stelsel, Recorder

December is the month for family events, shop-ping, sending and receiving cards, ex-c h a n g i n g gifts, and h o l i d a y parties. I wish all of the Nobility and

their families a Happy Holiday Season.

Zor’s Ceremonial and Parade to Glory will be held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells on

December 1. The timing of events for the day are in the Zephyr.

Other December events are the Phillips Variety Show in Phillips on the 4th, Lunch with Santa at the Zor Shrine Center on the 9th, Madison Shrine Club Holiday Party on the 16th. January starts with the Camel Patrol Chief Rabban Party on the 5th and Annual Meeting, Installation of new officers, and the Fez Party will be held at the Zor Shrine Center on the 12th.

The 2013 dues notices have been sent out with the dues staying at $70.00 if paid by January 31, 2013. Dues after January 31, 2013 (Continued on Page 3)

will be $80.00. Those Nobles who have not paid their 2012 dues have also been notified if their 2012 dues are not paid by December 31, 2012 leaves Zor no choice but to suspend them from being a Zor Shriner. Nobles can not ask for a Demit unless their current year’s dues have been paid. If you are unable to pay your 2012 dues, please contact the Zor Office or the Recorder, as we may be able to offer assistance so you may retain your membership.

Hello Everyone,Winter is definitely in the air

as I write to you. This year has zoomed by. Picking up from where I left off in my last letter I will start with October 9th which was the monthly Divan meeting followed by the Quarterly meeting at Zor. We arrived in time for the Honored Ladies Lunch at Hankwicz Hall which I reported about last month. I want to commend the Zor office staff of Jim Stelsel, Pat Parrell-Sonnenberg, and Sandy Davila for keeping the daily operations running smoothly. They help keep me on track, too, by using email and cell phones to communicate.

The final steak fry of the year was sponsored by Past Potentates, and it was delicious. It was nice to see PP Darl Hoffman and Lady Dorie there from River Falls. Talk about eating two big meals in a day – we were stuffed!

Lady Julie and I drove to Zor on Sunday, October 21st for the Ceremonial of the Daughters of the Nile Antioch Temple No. 113 followed by a dinner at Hankwicz Hall. My lady reported that two candidates were initiated into the order: Crystal Henning of Monroe and Karen Harvey of Janesville. Antioch Queen Jodi Ott organized a very nice dinner at which Past Supreme Queen Sue Layman of Rockford, IL reported statistics of donations to the Shrine Hospitals.

The following two weekends we travelled to Shrine football games at LaCrosse and Whitewater. We were blessed with fine weather for travel.

The LaCrosse Shrine Club and the Jesters were very hospitable to the Divan members and Ladies who attended the football game. The Divan members who attended this event were Larry Hanson and Lady Jill, Monte Steiber and Lady Anne, Bob Giesler and Lady Pat. We enjoyed meeting Katie Young, the 14-year old Shrine patient who was honored at the half time show. Katie is an amazing girl who has mastered many tasks of living, using only one arm and hand. Shrine Hospital has fitted her with prosthetic arms since kindergarten, but she can do many things with one arm and hand including playing piano and putting her long hair in a pony tail. Katie was proud to wear the UW-L sweatshirt presented by the team.

We stayed overnight at DeForest, and the next morning drove to Beloit for the Sausage and Biscuits Breakfast sponsored by the Beloit Shrine Club. President and Master of the Beloit Lodge Duane Harvey and Past Master Norm Luellen along with several Beloit Shriners served a delicious breakfast to more than 100 folks. Duane gave us a tour of the magnificent

building that has both upper and lower rooms for meetings of the Blue Lodge, Shrine Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Duane commented that at one time Beloit had up to 1,500 members that used the larger upper rooms. Glen Fairchild and Peter Ramboldt, long time members of the Lodge and Shrine sold tickets at the event. Assistant Rabban Larry Hanson and Lady Jill had been to the breakfast earlier in the day. Larry is the Zor rep to the Beloit Club. In addition to everything we

were delighted to meet Marilyn Thomas, a former Shrine patient at the breakfast.

The following Monday evening Lady Julie and I attended an OES Grand Representative party for Diane Thomas, Grand Rep to Utah in Wisconsin at River Falls Lodge. Diane is the wife of St. Croix Valley Shrine Club Treasurer Jack Thomas. Several past and current dignitaries of the OES attended the event including Worthy Grand Matron Winona Olson and PGP Jerry Bristol. We were unable to attend the Grand Rep party of Lori Thompson, Grand Ruth at Baldwin because we were travelling home from Beloit.

In between all the events I’ve already reported, I visited the Blue Lodges of Chetek and Ladysmith and the Musky Shrine Club at Spooner. Captain of the Guard Bob Hering accompanied me on those visits.

The first weekend of November my lady and I drove to Whitewater to attend the UW-Whitewater Football game with UW-Oshkosh. Sahara Shrine Club sold a lot of tickets and awarded $$$$ in prizes. Good going guys! Thanks to Noble Dale Olson and his club members for organizing the events. We were impressed with Perkins Stadium and the magnificent field.

We met the Zor Shrine patient Devin Johnson, age 6 prior to the football game. He is a delightful boy who has had more than his share of surgeries in his young life. Devin was born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (or AMC) which is a rare disorder that affects 1 in 3000 live births. It is characterized by three or more stuck or stiff joints. Devin has been a Shrine patient since he was five months old and gets checked every couple of months. Devin looked thrilled with all the attention he was given

prior to the game when he and his parents, Alex & Mariah Johnson, and baby sister were ushered onto the playing field. The football team awarded Devin with a UW-W signed football and jersey. The Sahara Shrine Club even crowned him like a little prince. It is truly an honor to be part of an organization that raises funds to help kids with a variety of disabilities.

We stayed overnight in Monona Saturday night and participated in the second annual Lefse Bake at Zor on Sunday. Assistant Rabban Larry Hanson and Lady Jill and Larry’s mother Dorothy guided the volunteers who gladly helped with preparing the dough, rolling and turning the lefse. There were four lefse grills operated by Karl Gant, Larry Hanson, John Thorstad, and me; four ladies rolling lefse were Jill Hanson, Pat Giesler, Sheri Severson and Julie Riemenschneider. PP Steve Peterson and Lady Mary Ellen were there, too. Steve prepared mashed potatoes and gravy, meatballs, and lutefisk. Dorothy supervised the cooling of the lefse which is quite a job. After the lefse were baked, the potluck food was about ready to eat. About 25 people

6 yr old Shrine patient Devin Johnson receiving a UW-W football.

attended the potluck, and everyone who wanted some went home with at least one package of lefse. A fun time was had by all.

The final event to report on was on November 9th when Lady Julie and I attended the social event of the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club at Ready Randy’s in New Richmond. A banquet followed by the annual St. Croix Valley Shrine Auxiliary Ladies’ Auction was successful in raising about $6,500 for wheelchairs and prosthetics for patients at the Shrine Hospital Twin Cities. Thanks to Shrine Club Pres. Mike Kastens and Lady Susan and Noble Gwynn and Lady Pearl Christensen for organizing the event. Shrine Auxiliary Adviser Lady Cheryl (Doug) Hoffman of River Falls contributed several

red backpacks full of useful items to auction off as well as bringing several of the oversized felt stockings sewed and decorated by volunteers and stuffed with toys for everyone to see. Others who helped with the success of the event were Auctioneer Gary Krueger who donated his services, Doug Hoffman, Bob and Amy Hering, Dee Tronrud, Diane Thomas and Barry Ausen. Gwynn and Pearl Christensen have served as host and hostess of this event for many years. Thanks folks!

We hope to report next month that many of you attended the Winter Ceremonial at Chula Vista. Meanwhile keep driving and I will, too, so our kids may thrive!

Fraternally,Larry J. Riemenschneider

Lady Cheryl Hoffman and Ill. Sir Larry sharing a smile.

Thank You From the Amdalls

Words cannot express our thanks for all the cards, letters, phone calls, and visits while my Lady Lois and I have been dealing with our very poor health. The Nobles and Ladies of Zor Shriners are the finest people to be found anywhere and we treasure each and every one of you. I look forward to putting on my “old red fez” and seeing you all soon. Thank you again for your care and for being a part of Zor.

Fraternally, Ill. Sir. Roger Amdall PP

If Bob Gorsuch is elected Potentate on January 12, 2013, he plans to initiate a change in the number of years a Noble must commit to the Divan should he decide he wants to be Potentate. In the past, the appointed Marshall each year can reasonably expect to be Potentate in seven years. Which means he is making a eight year commitment. And he has very little idea of what it means to accept that obligation. Nor does his Lady.

Of course, nominations can always be made at the annual meeting that would include Nobles other than those currently on the Divan.

Under Gorsuch’s plan, no one commits to further years on the Divan until he is elected Oriental Guide. All non-elected officers only commit to one year of service on the Divan. They are eligible for additional one year appointments by succeeding Potentates. The current Marshall,

2nd Ceremonial Master and 1st Ceremonial Master will continue to move up the line provided each incoming Potentate appoints them.

The advantage to the five year plan is that appointees only commit to one year. This gives them and their ladies the opportunity to learn more about what obligations and responsibilities go along with being on the Divan. It also gives each incoming Potentate the opportunity to appoint only

those who show they are willing to accept the responsibilities that go along with Divan membership.

Gorsuch’s three one-year appointments will all be eligible to be reappointed by the 2014 Potentate to one-year terms. Likewise, in 2015 the Potentate can reappoint all of the 2014 one-year appointments. But each one-year appointee is under no commitment to serve beyond one year.

The Zor Clowns from Madison are planning to bring our new 2013 Potentate into our unit as a true clown. Everyone loves a clown and most are a clown even if they are afraid to admit it. Mark your calendar for Saturday January 26th at the Madison Shrine Center. There will be a buffet as only Queen Ann’s can make followed by the making of a clown.

The social hour will begin at

BANKING ON OUR NEW POTENTATE4:30 in the basement and we will eat at 6:00 sharp. The cost of this event is only $20 per person and reservations are a must. We will hold true to some past traditions as well with our door prize drawing. All money raised will go to the Clown Red Sneaker Fun in the name of the future Potentate and his Lady. We will again ask any Past Potentate attending to bring along his picture.

This is open to everyone so

bring your friends and neighbors so they can see the fun we have in the Shrine. You do not have to be a clown to attend either, as clowns like everyone.

Checks are to be made out to Zor Clown and mailed to Dale Holmen, 13 St. Albans Ave. Madison, WI 53714 by Jan.18.

Remember it is always a good day to be a clown.

Thanks to the efforts of many Shriners Auxiliary members in the St. Croix Valley, decorated stockings are on their way to Children at the Shriners Hospital for Children® in the Twin Cities.

Cheryl Hoffman of River Falls, who serves as the Auxiliary Hospital coordinator, announced that 129 stockings have been assembled and filled with items all the children of the hospital

will need. These stockings were created by the Shriners Auxiliary members throughout the St. Croix Valley.

The colorful stockings were delivered to the Hospital on Novem-ber 19, 20, 21 and 22 and will also be delivered on December 3, 4 and 16, just in time for Christmas.

The Shriners of the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club and Auxiliary members held a highly successful fund-raising auction on Friday, November 9th at Ready Randys in New Richmond.

During the event, Club President Mike Kastens of New Richmond, accepted donations from various organizations and prizes were auctioned off to benefit the Auxiliary’s mission of helping provide wheel chairs and other items to the kids a Shriners Hospital for Children®.

One of the donations was from the Ellsworth Chapter #116 of the

Order of the Eastern Star. Another was received from Shriners who could not be present.

The item that was sold for the highest bid was a beautiful handmade Packer green and gold bean bag game created by Dennis Blevens of River Falls. Blevens was the guest of Noble Jim Wolfe at the banquet.

Zor’s Camel Patrol will hold its annual Chief Rabban Party on Saturday Jan. 5 at Rex’s Innkeeper in Waunakee.

Party Chairman Jim Stelsel said that the traditional party to honor the Chief Rabban, Bob Gorsuch and his lady Carol is held before Zor’s Annual Meeting and Election to honor the Noble who moves up to the post of Potentate on January 12.

It allows the future Potentate an opportunity to give a preview of some of the events he has planned during his year as Potentate.

Chairman Stelsel said the social hour will begin at 5:30 P. M. with dinner at 6:30 P. M.

Camel Patrol’s Chief Rabban Party to Honor the 2013 Potentate

As in past years, there will be a choice of four entrees-tenderloin filet, prime rib, chicken cordon bleu, and deep fried shrimp.

The cost for each entrée is $25.00 per person and will include baked potato, garden salad, rolls, milk, tea, coffee, ice cream, tax and tip.

Due to the choice of entrees, all Nobles and Ladies must fill out the accompanying coupon and send it with their preference marked and a check made payable to “ Zor Camel Patrol” for the number of dinners being ordered by December 28th, Stelsel said. He also promised door prizes and great fun and sociability.
