VOL. LIX NO. 4 APRIL 2019 CHRIST HALL KOZHIKODE FROM THE PROVINCIAL LIVING THE UAP, ‘CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME’ IN POST-FLOOD KERALA Post-flood Kerala presents a sad spectacle. A river- filled state, 44 of them criss-crossing the land, is starving for water. The mercury has touched 41 degree Celsius in some parts of the state. Three deaths due to sun stroke and increasing number affected by sunburn are reported. Social media is flooded with messages of how to save water. The soil of the state seems to have lost its water-holding capacity after the last year’s floods. Alarming changes are observed by scientists in soil quality too, posing a threat to crop production. The state is in for more trouble. In this context, living the UAPs is no more a luxury. It is a question of survival. ‘Caring for our Common Home’ as a preferred Apostolic Preference couldn’t have been more timely. We are challenged to work with Gospel depth, for the protection and renewal of God’s creation. However, if we are honest, we have too many questions unanswered. How serious are we as a Province in caring for our Mother Earth? Do the oft-repeated request for scientific solid waste management, sustenance of water sources, protection of the green cover and such other suggestions remain mirages? How do you understand that such a politically and educationally conscious state has miserably failed to create a system of solid waste management and protection of water sources? Have there been any advocacy efforts on our part? Thank God, there are some inspiring examples, scattered across the state, including even the poorest of the poor, to clean up the mess and protect nature. The Alappuzha model has been studied and copied by Meghalaya state. We, Kerala Jesuits, hand-in-hand with our collaborators, can still become models in caring for our common home through our communities and Institutions, if only we plan concretely and implement projects time-bound. LIVING THE UAP, ‘CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME’ IN POST-FLOOD KERALA

Post-flood Kerala presents a sad spectacle. A river-filled state, 44 of them criss-crossing the land, is starving for water.

JEPASA ANNUAL MEETThe Province core team of the Jesuit Pastors in South Asia (JEPASA) came together for its annual meeting at Christ hall on March 12. All the Jesuit pastors shared their experiences, insights, challenges and struggles. Fr P T Mathew, the Socius, joined us for some time. One new insight we got was about the need to expand JEPASA by including not only full time parish priests, but also those Jesuits who work as pastoral associates in parishes or are involved part time in pastoral ministries of various sorts. The group suggested that they could be incorporated as associate pastors. The core team decided to strengthen JEPASA by focusing more on Ignatian spirituality and by widening its ministry.
