KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers.

If you think you know this stylish store-front, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

A Story From The Past

Fortune Cookie Of The Week

Those have a short Lent, who owe money to be paid at Easter. Benjamin Franklin

Our Lord has written the promise of the res-urrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime. Martin Luther

My mom used to say that Greek Easter was later because then you get stuff cheaper. Amy Sedaris

In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, you’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade. Irving Berlin

Good Idea: Finding Easter eggs on Easter. Bad Idea: Finding Easter eggs on Christmas. Jack Handy

YOU may be hunting for candy this Eas-ter, but in the past pretzels were the treat of choice. The snacks were popular in the Cath-olic church because they were acceptable for consumption during Lent and the folded loops resembled arms crossed in prayer.

CAPE May was given nearly $3 million to create their Victorian Village. Meanwhile, a handful of Cape May cottagers grew incensed at the apparent lack of respect for the town’s history and atmosphere. They began meeting in the late 1960s to dis-cuss ways to halt development and preserve as much of the city as they could. As the cottagers met, developers continued to move forward with their plans and valuable pieces of Cape May’s storied past were bulldozed to the ground. Ben Miller

SAXONBURG, Virginia: Zack Neubert was observed standing at an intersection wearing only sneakers and an adult diaper. Neubert was directing traffic and performing mar-tial arts with a stick. He was cited for public drunkeness and disorderly conduct.

J It is better to have a hen tomorrowthan an egg today. J

Eosturmonath First described by the Vener-able Bede in his De temporum ratione, this word describes the pagan month during which early Anglo-Saxon and Germanic people celebrated the return of Eostre, an early god-dess of the dawn. Scholars believe that the Catholic church later coopted the word for the feast of Easter.

ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restau-rant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with chicken and broccoli and fried dump-lings. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

THE bad news for lovers of Sean’s Restaurant is that the business has been sold. The good news is that it has been sold to the Karapanagiotis

brothers, who run George’s Place, which is just a few doors along on Beach Avenue. I get the feeling that if you loved Sean’s then you probably love George’s Place, too – they share a kind of downhome bond.

The sale of Sean’s comes at the end of a very trying time for my good old friend Sean Conners, who opened the restaurant in the summer of 2008 after making his reputa-tion as a loveable rascal at Gecko’s, where he was server, greeter and all-around vibe-maker. Last year, Sean suffered a com-pound fracture of his leg and ankle while showing off a bike trick or two to his kids. “Yeah, I know, I’m too old for that kind of stuff,” says Sean, who described what hap-pened next as a “life-changing experience.” At one stage, Sean feared he might lose his leg, so bad was the injury.

Right now his leg is still in a hard cast as he continues rehabilitation. Sean is a long way from being able to run his own restaurant again, but he would love to get back into the business in some shape or form. A man with bags of charisma, restau-rant experience and cooking talent – seems like there might be a place for a guy like that in Cape May, wouldn’t you think?

³MEANWHILE, John and Peter Karapanagiotis will be having a

three-day brothers’ cook-off to launch their new restaurant, The YB (it’s an acronym for The Young Brother, aka Peter). The cook-off will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 29 to May 1, with seatings at 5:30pm

and 8pm. Then the restaurant will offi-cially open from Tuesday, May 3, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food will be modern American. Good luck, guys.

This being Cape May and this being spring, there are plenty of other changes to the local business map. The old Sports N Stuff, across from the C-View, is now North End Garage, run by the folks of North End Thrift in the Villas. Henry’s has been sold and will debut as The Beach House Restaurant, possibly as soon as this week-end, as of press time. They will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Blue Moon Pizza empire is expanding, taking over two stores in the little strip across from Godmother’s, opening Blue Moon Ice Cream and JoJo Mediterranean. I suspect you will see some Exit Zero types frequent-ing these places, given their proximity to EZ Global Headquarters.

Speaking of empires, Bath Time has expanded its Washington Street Mall loca-tion, overtaking the former Kettle Corn popcorn place next door. Between this prime spot and their West End Garage locale, clearly they are on a quest for world

domination. A good thing, what with cleanliness being next to godliness and all.

Let’s see – what else? The Shell Station on Sunset Boulevard is open for business and looking pretty spiffy, courtesy of new owners, the unfailingly polite and efficient Gill family, who have moved over to the island from their former service station on Bayshore Road in North Cape May.

³SPEAKING of world domination (I was, wasn’t I?), the absurdly popular

Trivia Night at the VFW continues to be a “what to do tonight?” problem-solving juggernaut one Thursday a month. The trivia mavens there have been duking it out faithfully for prizes ranging from gift cer-tificates to T-shirts to bragging rights since July of 2005, averaging over 100 players each month. The next night is April 28 at 7:00pm, and their May date is the 19th. As if that’s not enough, Ed McDonough, who runs the VFW Trivia Night, will join forces with Joe McLaughlin, who runs the weekly trivia at the Pilot House, for an “All Music Trivia” Night at the VFW on Thursday, May 26. Sounds like a great time, whether you’re a trivia whiz or a spectator.

³THE Kiwanis Club of Cape May is holding a fundraiser to help get Ed

Hutchinson elected to the heady heights of Kiwanis International Vice President (the election is being held later this year in Switzerland). Ed owns the Fairthorne with his wife Diane and is an all-around great guy, so this is a good cause. The event is open to everyone, not just Kiwanis mem-bers, and is being held at the clubhouse on Beach Avenue on Friday, April 29 from 6-8pm. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Chance Meetings Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

She jams a steel pick into my gums and tells me to spit.

These things called feelings are inconvenient at best. I’ve flirted with Heidi as best I’m able, to no avail. Perhaps she’s not interested, or doesn’t notice, or there’s some ethical rule governing relationships between patients and their dental technicians. There’s really no good way to ask her out while she’s rooting around in my molars. Heidi is simply unreachable, an impossible

DESPITE all evidence to the contrary, my dental hygienist, Heidi, says I have a tiny mouth. Visiting the dentist isn’t the normal torture,

thanks to Heidi. It’s more exquisite. Heidi listens to NPR. She has a Labrador. She laughs contagiously. She tolerates my teasing about her Hilary Duff eyeglasses. She’s wonderful.

And I sit there in the vinyl chair, bib on a chain around my neck, drool on my chin, and I fall in love with her. Her blue eyes are focused on me. Her blonde hair is pulled back in a ponytail, one lock loose, falling at my nose. She has a freckled wholesome beauty, the kind reserved for Midwestern farm girls and Scandinavians. I sit there, jaws open, and plan our marriage, name our children, think of the joys we’ll share as we grow old together.

Beneath her mask, she smiles. Her eyes crinkle beautifully at the corners and she leans forward. Her breast presses against the side of my face. I would do anything for her. I’ll buy her dinner. I’ll buy her diamonds.

dream. She hands me a new toothbrush and floss, says something about oral hygiene, and I’ll see her again in six months.

I have a tiny mouth, Heidi says. Maybe that’s why I can’t tell her how I feel. My teeth are clean, but my tongue is tied.

There’s a woman like this for every man. She ties us in knots, and though we’re prepared to devote ourselves absolutely to her, she’ll never know it. So ladies, please, take the lead. If you see a guy hovering around you, making excuses to spend just a few more minutes making small talk and giving up all semblance of cool, please ask him out. Trust me, he’d appreciate it. Maybe his mouth is just too small to hold the words he really wants to say to you.

Is your mouth the right size to eat a nice meal? Send an email to [email protected], I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. If the food sticks in your teeth, I can recommend a lovely dental hygienist.

The Exit Zero Random Gift Certificate Giveaway

« EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift

certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about Easter.

This week’s winner is Doris Russell, 55, a nurse from right here in Cape May. Here are her answers to our piercing questions:

What would you like to see in your Easter basket? CandyWill you take part in an Easter egg hunt this year? NopeIf it wasn’t a bunny, what would be the next best animal? The Easter Kitty

Doris wins a $50 gift certificate to Cucina Rosa for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy!

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

knowing huge limpid eyes.Easty also had a drinking problem, and

that is where his “gift” giving habit arose, and thus the whole legend of the Easter Bunny. When full of whisky, Easty would mischievously leave random souvenirs on people’s lawns, porches and other places he drunkenly thought they might step – half-empty whisky bottles, hats and whatever dairy products he would pilfer from the doorsteps they had just been deposited on by the milkman. So, Cape May’s citizenry

Did you know the Easter Bunny was from Cape May? It is not a fact we trumpet, given how different that rodent’s public image is from the real rabbit

we knew and loved and loathed in equal measure.

Most of the facts are rooted in the truth, mind you: he was unusually large (standing three feet on his hind legs), did speak when he chose, could on occasion wear clothes and did leave unexpected things for people to find in their gardens.

There, though, the similarity ends. Easty (for such was his name: he hailed from East Cape May, and his name was corrupted to ‘Easter’ through time) worked in our fair city in a variety of manual jobs: as a whale skinner, then a horse tanner, a smuggler of whisky and a doorman at the rougher bars, where he could, with one kick from those prodigious hind legs, send a troublesome patron f lying some 100 yards. He was also a hit with the ladies, and shamelessly let them stroke his furry belly as he gazed into their faces with those too-

would walk out and fall over glassware, stumble into a puddle of milk, or hear the crunch of eggs underfoot, and per-haps some drunken chuckles from under a nearby bush. Over time, the rabbit’s par-ticular joy of seeing people step on eggs, and his adoption of a set (and rather ran-dom) day of the year for mischief led to the start of the folk tales, and Easty was trans-formed from an alcoholic, misanthropic boor of a rabbit, to the cute Easter Bunny.

Easty did not survive to be horrified by that reputation: he came off the worse in an altercation with the Tooth Fairy (who is from Cold Springs) one night in the Brown Room over a set of gold teeth Easty claimed ownership of due to a gambling debt. Easty resorted to violence, which is never admi-rable with a lady, and never smart with a fairy (the Tooth Fairy’s reputation has also been polished over time – the lady I knew did not wait for a person’s tooth to fall out before collecting, and there was no men-tion of a shilling left under a pillow). I shall not go into details: suffice it to say the Fairy now wears a rather nice fur coat.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Page 51

WHEN I was growing up, my grandmother always said, “There’s a lid for every pot.” I never fully understood what she

meant until I started working in a Cape May restaurant. Waiting tables, a girl meets some pretty eccentric characters and, amazingly enough, most of them have found their equally eccentric soul mates.

Last week, I waited on a guy who told me as he left the dining room that he’d left a $1,000 tip on the table. A small part of me believed him. Ever since I watched It Could Happen to You, the movie in which Bridget Fonda plays a down-on-her-luck waitress who strikes it rich with a generous customer, I started thinking hey, it could happen to me, too.

Alas, not only did this jokester not leave me a $1,000 tip on his $200 check, he left me a whopping 13 bucks. And 15 cents worth of nickels.

A few minutes later, I saw the same gentleman enjoying an after-dinner drink at the bar. When he spotted me, he asked

what I thought of that tip he’d left. While I tried to figure out whether he was mocking me or just plain off his rocker, the man and his wife threw their heads back in laughter.

“Don’t mind my husband, dear,” the wife said. “He’s just playing with you!”

It amazes me that two folks with the same, ahem, quirky senses of humor could, in a world of six billion people, manage to cross paths.

Then again, I once waited on a vegan allergic to gluten who didn’t eat garlic. His dinner companion was a fellow vegan allergic to gluten who didn’t eat garlic. What are the odds?

And then there was the Civil War reen-

actor from Cold Spring Village who’d come to dinner still dressed in his Union garb. By his side was a woman equally enthusiastic about the same period of history.

“This fish,” she told me as I delivered her meal, “should have been here four score and seven years ago!”

Later, I waited on two people with the same goal – to go out to dinner without actually eating dinner. They ordered four baskets of complimentary bread and five free refills of iced tea each before finally deciding to share one appetizer.

Then I waited on two people with the same affinity for groping one another in public. If these folks ever came up for air, I might have been able to ask how on earth they’d each managed to find someone equally into tabletop tonsil hockey.

I don’t know what the odds are of two well-matched oddballs actually meeting, but I take heart in knowing it’s possible. If even these eccentric pots can get so lucky as to find their perfect lids, that measly $1,000 tip I’m shooting for doesn’t seem like such a pipe dream after all.

I’ve noticed he’s REALLY cheap. Our dates consist of stopping at Wawa for coffee (in our refillable mugs) on our way into town to (window) shop. He never takes me any-where because he says it costs too much. Is this fixable, or am I stuck with a tightwad? – Champagne Tastes, Beer Budget

Dear Champagne Hmm… is he actually cheap, or just

poor? There is a difference, and you don’t indicate that he actually HAS money. But if he does, and he just clings to it like grim death, the Answer Lady has yet to come across a cure for that in her many years of man-wrangling. Why you don’t plan your dates? With the aid of your handy-dandy Exit Zero, it’s a cinch to find wallet-friendly date activities. A cursory glance tells the

Answer Lady that the Ugly Mug has $2 hot dogs and 35-cent wings during Phil-lies games, for instance. Get your coffee or soda included with a Belly Buster break-fast or lunch special from Bella Vida. And Hemingway’s at The Grand has wildly pop-ular and way-cheap lunch specials daily. Remember, a little creativity goes a long way. PS: Is there any reason why YOU aren’t paying for some of these dates?

Dear Answer Lady My neighbor and alleged friend bor-

rowed a significant amount of money from me last year when her husband was laid off. She has since taken a course, gotten a job, and her husband is working again. But she hasn’t repaid the money and yesterday she bought a new car! I was so furious I couldn’t speak. Suggestions? – Empty Pockets

Dear Empty First, say goodbye to your money,

because the Answer Lady suspects it is gone forever. It’s unfortunate your neigh-bor took advantage, but lesson learned. Since you were unable to speak civilly, perhaps a short note would do the trick. Congratulate your neighbor on landing a job and say you’re happy they are getting back on their feet. Then point out that you understand that in her car-buying frenzy, it must have slipped her mind that she owes you some serious cash. Finish by saying that you’d like to discuss payment arrange-ments, starting next week. And if you can’t be civil, for heaven’s sake, mail it. Don’t tie it to a rock and throw it through the window of the new car, for instance.

LCMR Athlete Of The Week:Curtis Gift

«SENIOR pitcher and centerfielder Curtis Gift, a recent transfer student to LCMR from Wildwood High School, has been

making waves in LCMR’s baseball program, getting the team going with a 3-2 record. Gift, of Erma, began his baseball career at age nine, picking up his love for the game from his father, John Steer. Gift continued playing through middle school, freshman, and sophomore years at LCMR before transferring to Wildwood High School for his junior year. Gift returned to LCMR halfway through his senior year just in time to suit up for the Tigers this season.

“There hasn’t been any difficulty returning,” said Gift. “I’ve played with these guys through Teitelman and in summer leagues. It was the better choice for me.”

Gift is currently batting .550 with three homeruns and 11 RBIs on the season. Along with the team’s goal of winning their division, Gift hopes to reach the 100th hit milestone.

Gift plans on attending Fredrick Community College in Maryland for two years before transferring to a four-year college. He’ll also be eligible for the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

Although the season has just begun, Gift will undoubtedly contribute to the Caper Tigers’ success this year.

Activity Of The WeekA weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May Garden Club Flower Show

APRIL showers bring May flowers, but only Mother Nature controls the timetable. This can be discouraging if you’re planting a garden and

all you have so far is muddy shoes. Cheer yourself up with a visit to the Flower Show, presented by the Garden Club of Cape May.

The Flower Show, held on Thursday, April 28 from 12:30 to 5pm at the Grand Hotel, is free, and offers inspiration in the form of beautiful flower arrangements displayed in the sun-kissed ballroom. This year’s theme is “Birds of a Feather,” and the annual event also showcases the future of gardening. Students from Cape May County Technical High School’s Horticulture Department will exhibit their creativity, and the elementary school also has an exhibit. It’s the perfect outing for the gardener who needs more than a couple of green shoots for motivation.

Motivating amateur gardeners is what garden clubs have been doing for more than a century. Some clubs trace their roots to Athens, Georgia, where gardeners came together in 1891 to study plants and restore

public parks. Others trace their history to Philadelphia and the founding of the Garden Guild there in 1913. Their object was to “stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs.”

Garden clubs established that amateur gardening was more than a luxury. Their garden tours helped to raise money for education, including lessons on vegetable planting. These lessons helped urban and suburban gardeners through the Great

Depression and led to the success of Victory Gardens during World War Two. Over time, local garden clubs banded together in national efforts such as restricting invasive foreign plants, conserving redwoods and placing limits on billboards to preserve roadside beauty. Today, garden clubs maintain their interest in conservation while inspiring gardeners across the country.

Members of the Garden Club of Cape May may be inspiring you without your knowledge. Though its members are modest, theirs are the Cape May gardens that make you stop and stare in summer. From my kitchen window, I enjoy a view of one of these masterpieces. I can’t be the only one who bikes through town looking for ideas to steal – plants to thrive in shade, plants to bring the butterflies, plants to handle the August heat – but this only works in warmer weather.

You need motivation NOW, in the midst of dreary, relentless April showers when there is spring planting to be done. While you’re waiting for those May flowers, find inspiration at the Flower Show.

BENJAMIN Loverin is Cape May Stage’s new stage manager, and he has traveled here all the way from San Diego, California to begin rehearsals this week for

Say Goodnight, Gracie. Since this is a re-mounting of a show that has already been performed in this space, Benjamin is working on all of the technical aspects of produc-ing this play. Archival footage is stored in a computer. Sound cues need to be timed. Fog machines need to be tested and adjusted so that false alarms are not triggered by the smoke sensors. Joel Rooks will join these rehearsals shortly and begin fine-tuning his performance. Once he has worked through the movements, the Lighting Designer will arrive from New York to “paint with light”. Each element of a production is an art unto itself with every choice considered. This is the excitement and magic of the theatre. In less than three weeks, the opening of the 2011 season will be upon us.

This season promises to be the best ever, and a season subscription saves you 15%. You can reserve your favorite seats now for Christmas. Subscriptions keep you con-nected to a valuable cultural resource. Call 884-1341 or go online to capemaystage to order your subscription. There are further discounts for seniors over the age of 62.

Before our season officially begins, we are partnering with Chase Jackson to pro-duce a staged reading of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Was Enuf by Ntozake Shange. This 1975 poetic play is a landmark piece of black

«CANDY was returned to our shelter because of chewing issues. She will

need training to help break this habit but we feel that it can be done. Candy comes off shy but quickly relaxes and becomes quite social. She’s playful with her toys and occasionally protective of them. She’ll do best in a home with children over age eight. Looking for a sweet addition to your home? Meet Candy today. Adoption fee is $95.

«MONEY originally belonged to someone who could no long care for

him. From what the previous owner told us, Money is housebroken but does have accidents if scared. At times Money can be anxious so it is recommended that he go to a home without children. If you’re looking for a handsome guy and can help him overcome his fears and be the great doggie we know he can be, meet him today. Adoption fee is $95.

«CHAMP is just a fantastic dog on every level. He does well with other ani-

mals and everyone he meets. He’s very sweet and friendly, and extremely well behaved. He knows some commands but could use a little more training especially since he gets a little jumpy when excited. He’s just a really great dog who would make a loyal family pet. Unfortunately all that’s missing in his life right now is a family! Adoption fee is $95.

Not that you will see any of this. What you will see is a small, brownish, long-billed bird that will explode from some well-vegetated pool or puddle. Fly and land where you can’t get a look at it or f ly and come back to the same spot where you still can’t get a look at it.

The things are designed to blend in with grass. Aiding them in this regard is

IF YOU are dying to see Wilson’s Snipe, the time is now. What? No. We’re not talking about a bird that belongs to some guy named Wilson. We’re talking about a bird that was

named after some guy named Wilson.Alexander Wilson. Father of American

Ornithology. If you truly are dying to see this bird, Wilson beat you to it. The bird was named after him posthumously.

But back to the point, and rephras-ing slightly, if you are interested in see-ing a snipe then the time is now. They are migrating. They are easy to find. In fact, if you walk the trails of the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows just off Sunset Boulevard, you can hardly help f lushing a snipe.

Seeing them is the difficult part.First, know what you are looking for.

A snipe is a shorebird with a body about the size of a jumbo lemon and a bill that is about as long as the body. They are brown above, dirty white below. The back, and particularly the head, is streaky and the chest is dirty.

a penchant for crouching and staying still. When they explode into f light they

usually call. It’s short, loud, nasal scraping sound. It sounds like: “Yrrrrch.”

What does "Yrrrrch" mean? It means that you just missed another opportunity to see the snipe you’ve been dying to see.

But be patient. Where there is one snipe there are almost always more. And when one f lushes, get ready for the next. Sometimes all it takes is patience. Sometimes all you have to do is take one more step.

Yrrrch! And off goes another snipe.Snipe are not the only shorebirds in the

South Cape May Meadows. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs are also there now. But Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs have, as the name suggests, bright yellow legs. Snipe have dull, greenish legs (which your almost never see anyway). And when Yellowlegs take off they commonly f ly in a direct line.

The concept of a straight line seems not to occur in the minds of snipe. When snipe

take off, they zig and zag crazily. Then they land where you can’t see them.

You’ve heard the term “snipe hunt.” That’s right, this is the snipe of the hunt. In case you’ve never gone to summer camp and were never invited to go on a snipe hunt, the way it works is one (or more) of your campmates hands you a pillow case. A f lashlight. And the instructions – go out and catch a snipe.

Then you wander around making an idiot of yourself until you come to your senses and get back to your cabin, muddy and exhausted, to find all your bunkmates sleeping the good sleep of humans who have really put one over on you.

In truth, snipe are a listed game spe-cies, one of the few shorebird species that do have this distinction. Most shorebirds were removed from the game list early in the 20th century.

If you’d like to come close to seeing a snipe, I’d invite you to go to the South Cape May meadows. Team up with a CMBO naturalist on a regularly scheduled walk. They are snipe-finding experts.

In no time, you’ll be getting snipe by call. The leaders will call “SNIPE” a split

second after the bird explodes into f light and then, just before you get it in your bin-oculars, it lands.

It’s great practice for picking up war-blers in f light at the Higbee Dike. Keeps eye-hand coordination sharp in the off sea-son. The snipe season. Which is now.

Head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive over-looking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point – THE information spot for anything to do with nature. The center is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with

Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. The Movie ColumnTom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Of Gods And Men”

RELIGION. Can I write about this? Will you actually let me write about a film that is so steeped in its religiosity that you can’t help to write about faith and film? Oh,

that’s right! This is the Easter issue! Could be the Passover issue too, right? So let’s watch The Ten Commandments (there have been several — the most popular the 1956 version of course), or Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2004), or go to theaters to see Hop.

Of Gods and Men is the story of French Christian monks living among Muslim villagers in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. They run a health clinic, harvest produce and generally help the village with very basic necessities. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred in a nearby town by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear overcomes the region. Political figures offer armies for protection, but the monks refuse. These eight monks are urged to leave by the government, but the villagers urge them to stay. They debate among themselves: not all are predisposed to staying under threat of death. Despite their own doubts, all slowly grow to realize that they

have no choice but to stay. This film is based on the experiences of Cistercian monks in Algeria, who were kidnapped in 1996.

This film offers a gripping tale of commitment and service no matter the circumstances. There are powerful acting

performances from an ensemble of characters beautifully developed. The film does drag at times, and you wonder why the director needs to take you through one or two scenes when sense of place and character have already been well established, but in the end it is a moving story of loyalty that can be shaken and courage that can be disturbed.

The Cape May Film Festival is hosting its Summer Film Camp again this year, and we’ve already gotten some registrations. If you have a child or grandchild who has shown a talent or skill (heck, even a propensity) toward filmmaking, we encourage you to apply. The camp will be run this year by Joe Stinson, writer of the screenplay Sudden Impact and the legendary line: “Go ahead. Make my day.” The camp will be held June 27 through July 1, at the West Cape May Borough Hall, and you can register by emailing us for a form: [email protected].

Student videos can be seen at our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/capemayfilm), where nearly 16,000 viewers have enjoyed their work. There are more than 50 films, each one quirkier than the last.

The courage of Cistercian monks is tested in "Of Gods And Men"

The Dating Column Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

EVERYONE knows a dating cha-meleon – that person whose appearance changes with every significant other. When my col-lege roommate dated a bad boy

who sported gold chains around his neck and naked lady tattoos across his chest, she layered on the lip liner and bought a span-dex miniskirt. When she dumped this guy for the pot-smoking hippie who meditated in our kitchen, she walked around barefoot and sported a tie-dyed bandana.

I had a teacher once who so hated this sort of significant other-inspired makeover that she refused to let the school’s drama club per-form Grease, because it ends with a perfectly lovely girl trading in her poodle skirt for a pair of leather pants and a pack of cigarettes, all to please a guy.

On this issue, I’m on the fence. While I don’t endorse changing for anyone, I’d cer-tainly throw on a pair of leather pants if it meant getting the attention of John Travolta circa 1978. For better or worse, I think we’ve all got a bit of a dating chameleon in us.

Going through my own closet today, I

found the conservative dress I wore to the the-ater with one guy, and the Westbrook jersey I wore to an Eagles game with another. And my underwear drawer – full of expensive strings and ruffles and lace – looks like the sup-ply closet of a high school home economics class. Dating, it seems, is nothing more than a series of wardrobe changes. I can go from June Cleaver to Jessica Rabbit in the blink of an eye.

But problems don’t arise from wearing out-of-character outfits; problems arise from

adopting an out-of-character personality. Fool a guy into thinking that you keep up with current events, and he’ll figure out you’re lying when you opt for your Now 15 CD over NPR in the car. Pretend you’re a basketball fan because he is a buff, and he’ll know you’re full of it when a stadium’s hot dogs get you more excited than the last three-pointer.

The point is, when it comes to dating, it is always best to be yourself. Wear what you want, do what you like and find someone who loves you for it. And if that’s not good enough, at least wear a really rocking pair of leather pants to the next basketball game.

On an unrelated note, I’d like to respond to Everett Chance, who took issue last week with my use of the word “adorable” to describe a man, suggesting that I place too high a pre-mium on physicality. You may just be the most loyal reader I’ve got, Mr Chance, so I’m not going to get snippy. But I'd like to point out that a man does not have to be good-looking to be adorable. Also, I’m pretty sure that the way to a woman’s heart isn’t through nit-picking her choice of adjectives. Just something to keep in mind on that next date of yours…

What is the Difference Between Void Contract & Voidable Contract?

Heijung Park-ColamecoBrokEr/sAlEs

Office: 609-884-3050 Direct: 609-602-8641Email: [email protected], Selling, & Renting with Integrity & Trust

A void contract is one that has no effect due to some fundamental defect. A void contract means that none of the parties to it can legally enforce it, and are usually not valid. Generally no property can pass under a void contract.

A voidable contract on the other hand, is a valid contract but the law gives one party an option whether or not to proceed with the agreement. For instance, there may be misrepresentation which allows the innocent party to make certain choices, thus a contract declared voidable.
