A Choice on the HorizonIt’s gotten awfully quiet these last few days. For months, the campaign has been

in full swing, with all kinds of excitement: debates, special events, local merchantshaving their storefronts plastered with campaign posters, legal machinations andinfighting among the Democrats - you name it, we saw it.

But since the primary election and the surprising victory of ACORN and Big Labor-backed candidate James Van Bramer, all is still.

But the fat lady hasn’t finished singing - it’s only intermission. There is a new voice and a new face coming over the horizon as we swing into the

REAL election, which wasn’t the Democratic primary, but rather the general electionon November 3rd.

Free of the negatives and the taint of corruption that are associated with politics asusual, Republicans have mounted a candidate for City Council who promises govern-ment for District 26 that is realistic, responsive and responsible.

Angelo Maragos is the son of Greek immigrants, an engineer, and a youngbusinessman. You can meet him every morning and evening at subway and bus stopsthroughout District 26 as he gets to know our neighborhoods and our voters.

Maragos, a resident of Long Island City, was educated at the Cooper Union wherehe earned a Bachelors of Engineering degree and served on the college Board ofTrustees. He is currently a business analyst with Credit Suisse. Maragos is a memberof the Greek Orthodox Christian faith attending the St. Demetrios parish in Astoria.

Maragos, another young candidate, joins incumbent Eric Ulrich, Alex Zablocki, and Cheri Murray seeking election this November to give residents a break with thestatus quo and bring new ideas and creativity to City Hall. Maragos stated: “I pledgeto be a full-time representative for all our residents and work tirelessly to improveeducation, help small businesses, create jobs, and cut government waste and fraud.”He continued: “A seat on the City Council is a job - and like any job, it requires that youproduce results, not empty promises. The people of Northwest Queens deserve betterservice than what they are getting and I intend to energize and empower this communityonce again.”

It’s odd how quiet the political landscape has become in recent days. It’s becomeall but unheard of hereabouts for Republicans to mount serious, well-funded challengesto the established Democratic order. But this year promises to shake up the post-primary lull. Make a difference this November 3rd. Vote for Angelo for City Council.

Yale Comes to SunnysideSunnyside Community Services’

(SCS’s) College Readiness Program will behosting two events in partnership with YaleUniversity. The first event will be an admis-sions info session on Tuesday October 20th

at 6:30p.m. Funmi Showole, Assistant Di-rector of Admissions at Yale, will talk aboutthe benefits of attending Yale and explainwhat the university looks for in an appli-cant. Yale is one of many colleges that willbe holding admissions info sessions atSunnyside. This fall, SCS will host recruit-ers from schools including Mount Holyoke,SUNY New Paltz, Boston University,Hobart, William Smith, Fairfield, Barnard,Williams, and CUNY. These events arefree and open to the public and they are anexcellent way for high school students andtheir parents to learn about students’ variousoptions for college. A schedule of all theseinfo sessions will be available at the event onOctober 20th.

On October 22nd at 6:00p.m. the CollegeReadiness Program will host the first ses-sion of a free two-part workshop on collegeadmissions essay writing. Peter Wilson, theprogram director, will lead this workshopalong with Ms. Showole from Yale. Hear-ing from Ms. Showole is a unique opportu-nity to gain insight into a mysterious selec-tion process. She will explain what admis-sions counselors look for when reading ap-plicants’ essays and other written work. Mr.Wilson will share examples of exceptionaladmissions essays and dissect the structureand format of each essay to help studentsunderstand how they are constructed. Hewill offer tips to help high school seniorswrite memorable narrative essays that will

help them stand out from other college ap-plicants. October 29th starting at 6:30p.m.,participants in the follow-up session will beable to put all this advice to use, as they peer-edit drafts of personal statements and othercollege essays with the help of College Readi-ness staff.

Since 2003, over 85% of the participantsin the College Readiness Program have beenadmitted to a college or university. Partici-pants have won in total over $21.5 million inuniversity and private scholarships. Highschool students interested in participatingcan pre-register for the program’s Winter orSpring Cycle. The cost to participate in thefull program is $199. The program includesSAT and SAT II Prep, Reading and WritingSeminars, individual college advisement andfinancial aid counseling, and college visits.

When asked about the College Readi-ness Program’s exceptional record, Mr.Wilson explains “Our ability to help stu-dents build top notch college essays hasbeen key to our participants’ success.”

Why is this so important? Mr. Wilsongoes on to say “College essays are perhapsthe most neglected aspect of a graduatingsenior’s college application. High schoolsare often unable to adequately help developstudents’ written work. Well written, memo-rable essays coupled with solid short answerresponses can propel a promising student’sapplication to the top of the admissionspool.”Sunnyside Community Services is located at43-31 39th St. Sunnyside NY 11104.
