Cook With the holiday season upon us, you have probably already had some sightings of Santa and maybe even his reindeer. This week, Tidbits scopes out some interesting facts about these pointy protrusions that can be both beautiful and deadly! • Antlers are the bony growths that sit atop the heads of more than 60 kinds of deer, including moose, elk, reindeer and caribou. All of these animals are hoofed ruminants of the Cervidae family. Ruminants include cows, sheep, goats and giraffes, all of which have four-part stomachs. • Antlers are true marvels of nature. All deer grow a new pair of antlers every year from the time they are a year old. The rate at which they regenerate, an inch or more per day, makes them the fastest growing formation in the animal kingdom. Conversely, the degeneration of the bond between the antler and the pedicle, the bony platform above the frontal bone of the skull on which antlers grow, is the fastest deterioration of tissue in the animal kingdom. This tissue degeneration causes the antlers to loosen and fall off in complete sets. • While only male moose and elk have antlers, both male and female caribou and reindeer grow them. Moose and elk use them as weapons to fight for herd leadership or for a female mate. In June 1963, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a summer day camp at her home in Maryland. Different from most day camps, this one was for young people with intellectual disabilities.• Shriverwantedtheyoungpeopletobeableto

explore their capabilities in sports and other physical activities. Camp Shriver was the predecessor of what is now known worldwide as the Special Olympics. Shriver’s commitment to individuals with challenges came from her love for sports and for her sister Rosemary, who in 1941, was institutionalized because of her disabilities.

Senator Robert Kennedy was shot after her other brother, President John F. Kennedy, had been shot and killed. The deaths of her brothers had a major impact across America. Although in a very

MARY, MARY, QUITE CONTRARY

by Pat Wilhite

What does a real estate agent do in a down market? Plant a vegetable garden, of course! OK, done that, now what? Should I start picking off

the leaves and making salads? That doesn’t seem quite right since I only did the planting two days ago. A voice in my head says “oh my, Mistress Pat, you better call someone”

The good news is that I do know what to do when listing and selling homes. I should, it has been my bread and butter for 12 years, starting with Heritage Palms C.C. in Indio, a 55+ community of 1004 homes.

Lately I’ve had the pleasure of representing several buyers in the NEW phase of Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio. It’s the same projected size as Heritage Palms, (1,000 homes) but everything is brand spanking NEW, including the Clubhouse.

One of my buyers refused to spend a penny over $200,000 to buy a new 2bd/2ba/den home and to my amazement, her offer was accepted. Just when you think you know everything, she ended up showing me how it works when a very skillful buyer holds firm. And, guess what, I ended up buying myself a new home at Sun City Shadow Hills, all perks included. Now when someone asks me what I do for a living, I tell them “I’m a Buyer’s Agent for new homes at Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio.”

Use me as your agent in a senior community, and don’t be surprised if you get everything on your wish list, PLUS a bushel (?) basket of fresh vegetables, courtesy of …….

1. What two animals in the deer family, both male and female, produce antlers?

2. Which two deer species do not grow antlers?

Caribou and Rein- deer are of the same species:

Rangifer tarandus. Reindeer are domesticated caribou that are used for pulling sleds and are herded by humans. Reindeer generally are smaller with shorter legs than wild caribou. In North America, caribou are mainly

found in Alaska and Canada. Caribou are called “wild” reindeer

in Siberia.

Horns, unlike antlers, do not regenerate each year. They grow throughout an animal’s life, and if they are broken, they do not reform. Most animal horns have only one point. The pronghorn antelope is the exception, with two points. Pronghorns also are different in that they shed their horns.

•Whenthevelvetdriesandhardens, theantlershave reached their full size. Deer rub and polish them against trees to keep them sharp and shiny and also rub trees when it is time for the antlers to shed. The antlers do not always fall off together. Sometimes one side will fall off with the other following a day or so later.

•During the heat of the summer when antlersare almost fully grown, they serve as natural air conditioners. With the large amount of warm blood running through them, the antlers “throw off” some of a deer’s body heat. Of all of the types of deer though, remember that the only females that grow antlers are caribou and reindeer. So, the poor females of the other types of deer don’t have this built-in cooling system.

•Manydeershedtheirantlersinaboutthesamelocations (called “antler sheds”) each year, and many hunters and artists search for the shed antlers. Collecting and selling the antlers is permitted in most areas. However, some states have enacted shed-hunting laws that only allow antlerstobegatheredincertainareasatspecifictimes, withlargefinesandevenjailtimeasthepenalties for those who break these laws.

• Shed antler collecting is quite popular in theNational Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Jackson District Boy Scouts are issued a special permit one Saturday each spring to join the refuge staff in gathering elk antlers. The Scouts help sort, weigh, tag, bundle and sell the antlers at a public auction held in the Jackson Town Square each May.

• Jackson (the area is called Jackson Hole) hasfour elk-antler arches at the corners of Town Square Park in the center of town. The arches, first erected by theRotaryClub of Jackson inthe 1960s, are made of antlers gathered from the Elk Refuge. Each arch, made from about 2,000 antlers, weighs 7,000-10,000 pounds. Recently, the Rotary Club auctioned off the old arches and replaced them with new ones. Millions of tourists from around the world have had photos taken under the famous Jackson antler arches.

● It was British writer and humorist Je-rome K. Jerome who made the follow-ing sage observation: “It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. There is no fun in doing nothing when you have nothing to do. Wasting time is merely an occupation then, and a most exhausting one. Idle-ness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen.”

● According to an international survey of taxicab drivers, passengers who use cabs in London are twice as likely as those in eight other major metropolises to leave a laptop behind when exiting the taxi.

● Sharks can live for a century or more.

● Velcro came to market in 1957, after a Swiss inventor named George De Mes-tral spent nearly 10 years developing the idea. His inspiration came to him in 1948 on a hike, when he had difficulty removing tenacious little burrs from his clothes. He reasoned that if he could create synthetic burrs, they could be used as fasteners.

● The Parker Brothers game Monopoly is the best-selling game in history. It’s available for purchase in 28 countries, and it can be played in 19 different lan-guages.

● If you speak some French, you might know that the phrase “tout a l’heure” means “see you later.” You might not real-ize, though, that that phrase is the origin of the English term “toodle-oo.”

Despite the objections of a few who disapprove of fur pelts being made into coats, many trappers and fur farmers still exist and make their living from fur production - an occupation that is as old as mankind itself. •Rankedthirdintheworldforfurproduction,

Canada boasts being number one in producing thefinestqualityoffurs.Trappingoffurbearinganimals occurs in every area of Canada. While you may think of mink coats when you think of fur, beaver garments are the most important Canadian furs exported. The two countries ahead of Canada in fur production are Russia andtheUnitedStates.

• ThemostcommonwildfurspeciesinCanadaare beaver, muskrat, marten, squirrel, fox and raccoon.

• Martens are members of the weasel family.Their furs are marketed as “sable” and vary from yellowish buff to dark brown. Sable furs are considered exquisite and are among the most expensive furs on the market.

•Beaverpeltsareusedfortophatsandcowboyhats. The finest cowboy hats today are stillmade from beaver.

•Approximately 1.7 million mink pelts areproduced annually on fur farms in Canada, butU.S.minkfarmsproduceevenmore.Thelastofficialcountdone in2009reported2.86millionpeltsinU.S.production.

•Minkareknownforholdingthedubioushonorof being one of the world’s greatest “super recyclers.”Afavoritestaplefoodof theminkis the solid waste produced by dairy cattle, fishandotheranimals.Asingle farmedminkwill eat about 140 pounds of waste during its

lifetime.According to theU.S.Department ofAgriculture,“afull-lengthminkcoatcontaining40 pelts represents 5,600 pounds of ...waste.”

•Fur trapping isnot simplya sport or away tolet the wealthy show off expensive coats. Fur trapping is also a proven and effective way to keep the environment balanced and healthy. Some animal population sizes would soon grow to be uncontrollable if they were not trapped and their numbers kept in check.

• Nutria, for example, are semi-aquatic rodentsthat were imported for the fur industry into Louisiana from South America in the 1930s.These animals reproduce so rapidly that they can denude vegetation, scar the landscape and cause serious erosion problems. In coastal Louisiana, the marshlands need to be protected from these destructive animals to prevent them from destroying it completely.

• BiologistDr.GregLinscombeoftheLouisianaDepartment of Wildlife and Fisheries, made extensive studies into the results and consequences of the nutria’s destructive nature. He states, “The key to abundant wildlife in coastal Louisiana is habitat. If we protect these marshlands through management, including the harvesting of fur-animals, we can ensure these renewable resources for untold generations.” Louisiana provides 97 percent of North Americannutriafurandabout500,000muskratpelts annually.

• The Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron,Nebraska, showcases the fur trade of Native Americans,French,SpanishandBritishtradersand even buffalo hunters of the past.

•On the museum property is a reconstructionof the James Bordeaux Trading Post that was done so well that it is included on the National Register of Historic Places, a rare honor for a rebuilt structure.

• The Trading Post was established for theAmericanFurCompanyin1837andaspartofthe museum, is visited by about 40,000 people annually. The importance of the fur trade

SAVAGE TRUTH: Turn to page 11

The Savage Truth on Money

by Terry Savage

Page 6 Tidbits of Coachella Valley Vol. VII Issue 46

Q: I’m writing to inquire about “Hu-man Target.” Is it coming back this fall, or maybe as a midseason replacement? At the end of the program last summer, it said it was the season finale, not the series finale. -- Fran N. in Ohio

A: Every-one involved in a show is always hope-ful that it will get picked up for another season, hence the wording of “season finale” versus “se-ries finale.” After the second-season finale aired, Fox decided not to renew “Human Target” for a third season. But hey, at least it got to have two seasons. Even more of this fall’s new shows have been canceled after airing only a few episodes, including the CW’s “H8R,” ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels”(which will air its remaining produced episodes) and CBS’s “How to Be a Gentleman,” starring “Entourage” star

Kevin Dillon. On the critical list are NBC’s “Prime Sus-pect” and ABC’s “Man Up!” NBC’s “Pan Am”started fairly well, but has been hemorrhaging viewers left and right. However, this seems to be NBC’s darling, so it might get the network support it needs to sur-vive the season. ***

Q: When will “Merlin” return for an-other season on Syfy? -- Mary D., via Facebook

A: Syfy confirmed at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con that “Merlin” will return in early 2012 for its fourth season. However as of this writing, no firm date had been set. Also, BBC-One, which produces and airs the show first in the U.K., has approved a fifth season of the popular fantasy, and considering its good ratings on Syfy, there’s a great chance we’ll get a fifth season here as well. ***

Q: Is “Shark Tank” gone from TV? I loved that show. Will it come back? --Anonymous, via e-mail

A: “Shark Tank” will be back midseason 2012 on ABC for its third season, along with “Secret Millionaire,” which returns for its second season. Producers for the hit entrepreneurial reality show have not yet announced an exact airdate for the sea-son premiere of “Shark Tank,” but if past seasons are any indication, expect it sometime between January and March 2012. And keep checking the Celebrity Extra website (celebrityextraonline.com) for late-breaking info on all your favorite shows. ***

Q: What is going on with Netflix? Is it still going to be around, or is it going to be Qwikster? I am so confused!

-- Dee Dee T. in Georgia

A: Netflix recently reversed its decision -- in a rare move of a big corporation actually listening to its customers! -- of having two separate websites/companies for its DVD-mailing service (which was to be Qwikster) versus its streaming service (Netf-lix). Because customers did not want the hassle of having two separate accounts, movie queues and billing statements if they wanted both mail and streaming DVDs, they voiced their complaints, and Netflix listened. Look for everything at Netflix to re-main the same -- at least for the time being.

Don’t Be Afraid to Correct Investment Mistakes Sometimes it’s important to stick to your convictions despite the emotional urge or outside pressures to change your mind. But other times, you need to be flexible enough to change your mind when presented with a new set of facts. Never has that been more apparent than in the business headlines in recent weeks. First, the CEO of Netflix decided to reverse his decision to split the company into two parts, after the announce-ment and its pricing changes caused an uproar from shareholders and customers. Then the new CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co., Meg Whitman, decided to reverse the company’s multibillion dollar decision to dump HP’s personal computer division -- a decision made under the pre-vious CEO, but one in which she had participated as a board member. Each of these reversals cost shareholders a huge chunk of money. HP stock is down 36 percent for the year and Netflix lost 75 percent of its market value, not to mention 800,000 customers. Everyone makes mistakes. But when lead-ers of companies -- or countries -- make mistakes, the costs can be catastrophic. It takes courage to admit a mistake and reverse course. But that can be a better decision than continuing down the wrong road. Take Bank of America, for instance. It saw an opportunity to replace lost profits from debit card swipe fees by instituting a monthly $5 charge for us-ing a debit card to access your own money. What a fiasco!

When I asked Warren Buffett, who recently invested $5 billion in B of A preferred stock, what he thought of the move, he lifted his glass of Coca-Cola and said, “New Coke.” He was referring to the historic marketing mistake of 1985, which caused Coca-Cola Co. to quickly bring back “Classic Coke.” Sometimes experience is the great teacher. But it’s important to learn the lesson quickly and reverse course before too much damage is done. Hopefully, research will prevent those mistakes. Just this week, Chase said that after testing the market, it had decided against imposing a fee for debit card use. Of course, their decision was certainly influ-ence by the negative reaction to B of A’s blunder. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be first to venture forth with your brilliant new marketing ideas! So what does all this mean for your own in-vestment decisions and money-management plans? Well, first you have the comfort of knowing you’re not alone if you make a big mistake on an invest-ment decision. But at least your mistake won’t make headlines. On the other hand, as embarrassing as CEO mistakes may be, they are cushioned by huge salaries and golden parachutes as they depart. But your mistakes could cost you your re-tirement. That’s why it’s so important to do your re-search, create a sensible plan -- and diversify your investments so you don’t have all your nest eggs in one basket. The recent volatility in the stock market makes this advice all the more important. It may sur-prise you to learn that although the Dow Jones in-dustrial average is just about 750 points higher than where it started the year, it has traversed 22,350 points on a closing basis so far this year. Adding up all those closing moves -- both up and down -- has resulted in tremendous anxiety and a lot of second-guessing of investment decisions. But if you had determined an appropriate portion of your assets to invest in a diversified stock portfolio, you could have taken comfort in knowing that his-torically that portfolio would produce positive returns over a 20-year period. And if another portion of your assets was in safe but low-yielding “chicken money” investments

microwave. By opening the bag top completely, I can often fit the bowl or plate inside. If it won’t fit, I cut the bag open along the seam and lay it over the plate. The bag has sufficient body that it doesn’t touch the food, and I don’t have an extra plate to wash. I think of it as the fourth R: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose. -- Margaret, via email

POOL SHOES FOR MOPPING. I wear my pool shoes when mopping floors. They are light-weight, and the nonskid soles provide protection against slipping on a wet floor. -- Karen, via email

KILOWATT DETECTOR. To keep my electricity bill as low as possible, I rely on a clever device, Kill-a-Watt. It plugs it into the wall. Then I plug an appliance into it, and it displays the kilo-watts being used by that appliance. It’s a great way find out where the energy is going. -- Mike, Texas

CAT FOOD FOR TREATS. When I get a free sample of dry cat food that our cats have never tried, I put it in the “treat jar,” instead of feeding it to them as their regular food. Given as a taste, I feel I can better judge whether the new food agrees with my cats’ tummies and if they really like it.-- Melanie, Georgia

GRIND YOUR OWN. I use an electric cof-fee grinder to grind whole cloves into powder, table salt into a finer texture for popcorn and sugar into confectioners’ sugar. -- Kay, West Virginia

Misplaced Phone? Report Immediately! A friend of mine recently misplaced her cell phone. She assumed it would turn up if she were patient. After several weeks with no such luck, she stopped in at the Verizon store to get a replace-ment. That’s when she got slammed with the news that indeed her phone was alive and well, but in the hands of a thief who was having a great time calling and texting with reckless abandon. Verizon immediately disabled her number, but would do nothing about the hundreds of dol-lars in charges incurred up to that moment. She’s responsible for every penny of it, which should be a good lesson for all of us: The minute you cannot find your phone, report it stolen. When you find it, you can have it reactivated. In the meantime, you might want to take this preventive measure, in the hopes a decent person happens to find your phone:

LOST PHONE, CALL HOME. When I lost my phone, I called it -- and when a woman an-swered, I told her I was the owner of the phone. She had found it in a parking lot where I dropped it. Since then, and since we also have a landline at our house, I programmed my home phone number into my contacts under HOME, with no address. If lost, hopefully some kind soul will make the effort to call my home. -- Shirley, via email

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY (I C E ) I have heard that a bit of advice recommended by para-medics is to store the the letters I C E in your cell phone’s address list that is attached to the number of the person you would want contacted In Case of Emergency. This allows the ambulance and hospi-tal staff to quickly contact your next of kin in case of an emergency situation. -- Dave, via email

Fear Tinkling It’s happening every day in homes all over the world: fear tinkling. The dog is so submissive and fearful that he piddles in an instant when triggered by something. What turns on the tinkle? Several things can cause this unwanted behavior, including a loud noise, a vis-itor reaching out toward the dog, or the dog’s owner pointing and yelling. By any other name, fear tinkling is called “submissive wetting,” and it is common among shy and fearful dogs. Something frightens the dog, and he wets out of fear. So let’s explore this behavior, see what causes it, and determine how to solve or mini-mize it. We will start with the dog’s temperament. What has caused the dog to be shy and fearful? It could be a number of things: bad breeding, lack of socialization or too much discipline. You may have adopted a dog and don’t know his history. He may have been mistreated. And, of course, it’s important to know that your dog hears five times better than you do, so if you raise your voice or point at him while saying something like, “You bad dog, you,” that will only heighten the fear of your already-fright-ened dog. And this causes more fear tinkling. The only way to solve or at least minimize the problem is to build up your dog’s self-confidence. And the only way to do this is for you to be patient, kind and loving. Start the process by socializing your dog. When he meets new people and dog-friendly dogs, praise him and tell him what a good boy he is. Use only positive reinforcement. And be sure to train your dog. This is very important. Dogs love to learn and to reach their poten-tial. Submissive wetting is most common when you answer the door or when you come home after be-ing gone for a while. For example, when the doorbell rings and your trained dog accompanies you to the door, you will be able to tell him to SIT and STAY. Then praise him and open the door. Your well-trained dog will remain in the sit position, and this makes it difficult for him to cower and tinkle out of fear. Choose a trainer who does not teach by in-timidation. Love, praise and affection are always required to educate and modify the behavior of any

dog, especially one that is shy and fearful. When you work with your dog, always praise him as he learns the sit/stay command and all the rest. In fact, praise him throughout the educational process, even if he is only able to partially accomplish a command. He’s trying, and he will only get better if you reward him with loving praise. Why does training help? First and foremost, it helps build his confidence. A confident dog is not ruled by fear -- or his bladder. Woof!

Data Looking Ironclad That Supplements are Harmful Until the late 1970s, iron deficiency anemia was a serious health threat that -- although rarely fatal -- led to fatigue that annually cost the nation billions of dollars in lost productivity in the work-place. The cause was almost always excessive menstrual blood loss. Because of blood loss and inadequate iron in diets, 30 percent of premeno-pausal women had too little iron in their bodies; 20 percent had a severe enough deficiency that ab-normalities developed in their red blood cells; and 5 percent were severely anemic. To correct this problem, a national cam-paign led to the fortification of food with iron. Today, most flours, breads and cereals have added iron, and, as a result, iron deficiency and anemia have become much less common. Over the same period, millions of Ameri-cans began using nutritional supplements, often in very large doses, because of the belief that these supplements improved health, prevented disease and increased energy. Today, more than 50 percent of adults and many children consume numerous supplements on a daily basis. And many take more iron than they need. It turns out, that our effort to eradicate iron deficiency by adding iron to our diets and taking supplements comes with a cost. Gradually and insidiously, the iron stores of Americans have in-creased, and this has correlated with a modest but significant increased risk of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Iron is an oxidant, and when pres-ent in cells, it contributes to cell damage. This leads to a greater risk of cell abnormalities that can cause cancer and impairment in the immune system that helps fight disease. A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine provides more evidence that too much iron is too much of a good thing. Research-ers followed thousands of women, with an average age in 1986 of 61, who participated in the Iowa Women’s Health Study. Every woman completed a large questionnaire at frequent intervals from 1986

to 2004. This included information on whether they took vitamins, minerals and other dietary supple-ments. As these women grew older, more and more took supplements, increasing from 62 percent in 1986 to 85 percent in 2004. By December 2008, 15,594 of the women had died. Women who took iron supplements were twice as likely to die as those who did not. And remarkably, the risk of death was also higher in women taking multivitamins, Vitamin B6, folic acid, copper, magnesium and zinc. The only supplement exerting a positive effect on life expectancy was calcium, which is frequently quite deficient in the average American diet. While it makes sense that too much iron can damage cells, how could vitamins and minerals -- integral parts of food -- shorten life expectancy? One explanation is that the composition of vitamins and minerals in pill or capsule form is too dissimilar to the vitamins and minerals found in food. Vitamin E is a good example. In food, the vitamin consists of a mixture of alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocopherols. When taken as a capsule, all of the Vitamin E is the alpha tocopheral. This might explain why Vitamin E in capsule form has been shown to do more harm than good in numer-ous studies. More vitamins than we need may not be better than the ideal or natural amount. Deficien-cies of vitamins and minerals are very rare -- our problem is over-nutrition rather than malnutrition -- and taking much more than is required to meet our needs can lead to adverse effects. Vitamin and mineral sales in the United States run into the many billions of dollars, and many exercise and nutrition experts promote vari-ous supplements as essential for optimum health and fitness. While some research studies have shown benefits of consuming vitamins and miner-als, just as many studies have shown no benefit. Meanwhile, compelling evidence is piling up that points to potential harm. To me, the message is clear. The best source of every nutrient required for our health comes from food. Truly understanding how, what and when to eat is a better approach than trying to get a nutrient in a pill or capsule form.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Columnist Is Right -- Parents Are Not ‘Mooching’ Social Security Q: In a recent column, you categori-cally stated that people cannot bring their for-eign-born parents to this country and then put them on their Social Security account. You said the only way that could happen is if someone died. In other words, you claim that benefits to parents can be paid only after the death of one of that parent’s grown children. But I know for a fact that this is untrue. My ex-husband brought his parents to this coun-try in the 1980s and immediately put them on his Social Security. And they got those Social Security benefits for the rest of their lives. How could you print such a big lie?

A: I didn’t lie. The problem is that you are confusing one government program with another one. However, you are not alone in that confusion. I got emails from dozens of readers challenging me on my facts or accusing me of lying. And every one of those readers made the same mistake you are mak-ing. I’ll explain in a minute, but first I will review the facts. In that prior column, I took on a ubiquitous rumor that Social Security is going broke because retirees are bringing their elderly parents to the U.S. from foreign countries and then putting those par-ents on their Social Security account. People claimed that these parents were “mooching” undeserved benefits off the system -- benefits financed by over-burdened American taxpayers. I correctly pointed out in that column that the only way a parent could claim benefits off an adult child’s Social Security record is if the adult child died. And then benefits could be paid only if the adult son or daughter was supporting his or her

parent before the son or daughter’s death. Finally, I made clear that out of roughly 50 million Social Security beneficiaries, only about 2,000 people get benefits as dependent parents on a deceased son or daughter’s Social Security record. And the vast majority of those parents are U.S. citi-zens. So even if they were all “mooching” benefits from the taxpayers (which they are not because they are getting paid legally), they are certainly not bank-rupting the Social Security system. All the readers who claimed they had per-sonal knowledge of a foreign-born parent getting So-cial Security benefits were actually referring to folks getting Supplemental Security Income payments. As I’ve pointed out so often in this column, far too many people confuse SSI with Social Secu-rity. SSI is a federal welfare program that pays a very meager monthly check to about 6 million elderly and disabled poor people in this country. Even though the program is managed by the Social Security Ad-ministration, SSI is not a Social Security benefit, and SSI checks are not funded by Social Security taxes. Up until about 20 years ago, it was possible for an elderly person who moved to this country le-gally to qualify for SSI benefits after they arrived -- as-suming they met all the eligibility requirements. So, many people, like your ex-husband, brought their parents over here and then took them down to the Social Security office to help them file for Supple-mental Security Income payments. Because they went to a Social Security of-fice to do this and because the name of the program makes it seem to be a Social Security supplement, many folks mistakenly believed their parents were getting some kind of Social Security benefit. But again, they were not. Those foreign-born parents were getting monthly SSI checks. And they didn’t get the checks for long. Sometime during the early 1990s, Congress changed the law to say that, with only very few exceptions, only U.S. citizens could qualify for Supplemental Se-curity Income payments. So foreign-born parents have never “mooched” benefits from the Social Security pro-gram, and for the past two decades, they haven’t “mooched” benefits from the Supplemental Security Income program either. * * *

Q: My dad is 104 years old. He lives in a nursing home. A Social Security representa-tive recently visited him and asked to see some form of identification. What was that all about?

A: Gosh. I didn’t know the Social Security Administration was still doing those ID checks on centenarians! It’s an anti-fraud measure to make sure people that old who are getting Social Security benefits are really still alive. As I recall, the project started 30 or more years ago following a spate of news stories about grown children cashing their deceased parents’ So-cial Security checks. During my career with SSA, I visited hundreds of centenarians and essentially asked them: “Are you still alive?” I always found that so embarrassing! And in all the cases I was involved in, there never was even a hint of fraud. Frankly, I’m not sure how effective or neces-sary that program is anymore. Today, all kinds of other anti-fraud measures are built into the system, such as computer-matching operations with banks and state bureaus of vital statistics. With only a few rare (and thus newsworthy) exceptions, if you’re old and you die, Social Security is going to find out about it.

Dr. Stephen Su, DPM

Take a Rest, My Restless Legs DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to know more about RLS, restless leg syndrome. Could you discuss this in your column? -- I.J.

ANSWER: Roughly 7 percent of women and 3 percent of men suffer from restless leg syndrome. That gives you a lot of fellow sufferers. People de-scribe it in many ways. Some say it’s an aching in their legs. Others describe it as a creeping-crawling sensation. No matter how people express the feeling, it makes them get up and move around. Activity less-ens or gets rid of the sensations, but they can and do come back. They usually appear in the evening or at night when people are sitting or when they get into bed. No one is sure what causes the syndrome. Things that lessen its intensity and frequency are cutting back on caffeine, stopping smoking and ex-ercising daily. Eliminating alcohol is a most helpful remedy. Sometimes restless leg syndrome is associ-ated with iron deficiency and the anemia due to iron deficiency. Your doctor will want to check you for that. Pramipexole (Mirapex) and ropinirole (Requip), both drugs for Parkinson’s disease, are used for this syndrome, even though it has no rela-tionship to Parkinson’s disease. They stimulate cer-tain brain areas that control movement. Levodopa, another Parkinson’s medicine, also is prescribed. There are others, should these fail. Periodic limb movements of sleep is another condition that frequently occurs along with restless leg syndrome. It’s involuntary movements of the legs and feet during sleep. The kicking and jerking last about two seconds and recur every 20 to 40 seconds. Often the affected person is unaware of them. The bed partner plays a nighttime role of being a drop-kicked football and is quite aware of what’s happen-ing. The affected person is quite tired during the day. The same medicines used for restless leg syndrome can be used here, too. Daily exercise might put an end to the nocturnal movements. The booklet on restless leg syndrome and nighttime leg cramps explains both conditions. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 306W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or

money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have puffy bags under my eyes. They look like they have water in them. I am an 85-year-old woman. What’s the best way to treat them? They aren’t getting any better. I use ice on them, and it helps, but they come back. -- M.C.

ANSWER: Those puffy bags under your eyes aren’t filled with water; they’re globs of fat. In younger years, tough strands of fiber held them in place. With age, those strands weaken, and the fat bulges out. Look around and watch for them on TV. You’ll see that most people over 60 have them. They’re not a sign of illness. I have seen all sorts of ads for creams and gels that say they can shrink these bags. I can’t vouch for any of them. I don’t know if they work. I have reservations. One way to correct them is surgi-cal removal. You can forget the ice treatment unless you want to keep it up. It’s not a solution. ***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Do We Really Need to Take Vitamins? Recent studies show that in some cases, vitamins actually can be detrimental to our health instead of the other way around. One reason is that so many vitamins already are put in our food and drinks, it’s easy to get too much. The difficulty is sorting through the re-search results. Here are some of the findings: ● Vitamin E, when taken in large doses, has been shown to cause a slightly higher risk of prostate cancer, but can lower the risk for Alzheim-er’s disease. ● Low vitamin D is often seen in cancer patients. ● Senior women might have a slightly high-er risk of dying if they take certain vitamins and supplements. Iron can increase mortality, while calcium can reduce it. ● Vitamin B-12 might help with memory problems. Unfortunately, vitamins and supplements don’t have to pass scrutiny in testing, so you might not be getting what the bottle says. It could be more, or less, or the contents could be contami-nated. Don’t self-diagnose. If you take vitamins and supplements, or are considering it, the first step is to talk to your doctor. If you really need to know what’s in your supplements, Consumer Lab (consumerlab.com) does testing and issues reports. It costs $33 per year for a subscription (call 888-502-5100 instead of putting your credit-card number on the purchase page). There’s also a free email newsletter that will tell you about warnings, recalls and reviews. To learn more about vitamins, go online to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ods.od.nih.gov), which is part of the National Institutes of Health. On the right, look for the link to Tips for Older Supplement Users.

A: The direction of investments has be-come the “billion dollar question.” We are bombard-ed with so much information and differing opinions, that deciding the best way to invest is a crapshoot. We can’t change what we can’t control, but monitoring our portfolios and forgetting its past performance is our best hope. Try to find an experienced, common sense investment counselor who has a reasonable track record, understands your personal goals and gives you the ability to monitor his or her actions. If their performance does not match your needs, find someone else. Professional advisors can no longer rely on historical data. Just juggling clients’ time horizons, rebalancing their portfolios and as-set locations, choosing stocks versus mutual funds, diversifying assets into growing industries, holding cash versus investing, guessing whether stocks or bonds will increase the most in value are just some of the options. To quote Warren Buffett, “In the business world the rear view mirror is always clearer than the front windshield!”

Children’s Maturing Q: We have a lovely 19-year-old grand-daughter who is in her second year of college. She made straight A’s in high school, was hap-py and popular. Now she is struggling to make C’s, has gained a lot of weight and wants to quit college. Neither her parents nor we can we understand her problem. How can we help her refocus on her abilities and get out of this slump?

A: Some psychologists believe many indi-viduals today do not mature until about age 26. They attribute several reasons for this: Failure to assume responsibility; the 50 percent divorce rate; being spoiled as children; too many scheduled sports and required social interactions, and not enough free time as children. Also, too many families do not pen-cil in enough family time on their calendar. Other contributors are the development of the computer and its offspring, the youth’s “secret” languages, such as texting, and other child raising in-terferences. What parent or grandparent doesn’t feel alone while driving when their child or grandchild is completely preoccupied listening to their iPod, busy texting a friend or immersed in a computer game? If your family can’t identify the cause of the problem, you certainly can’t solve it. Either you or her parents should encourage her to sit down with her school guidance counselor to get to the root of her problem. If she has entered a large and highly competitive college or university after doing well in a small town high school, she may have had a rude awakening. She is now going to have to work a lot harder for those high grades than ever before. Other reasons could be that her classes are too difficult, relationship issues, insecurity, health or psychological problems. She might even consider delaying college for a year or so and find a job. A “time out” like that may give her a different perspec-tive and new direction in pursuing a career choice and her college major.

Q: In the last three years of our retirement our assets have dropped about 22 percent in value due to losses in our stocks and real estate values. We now fear inflation. Our money buys less, and the more we read the financial pages and listen to the political experts, we find ourselves feeling nervous and insecure. What’s your read on the future for re-

● On Nov. 17, 1421, a storm in the North Sea batters the European coastline. Over the next several days, approximately 10,000 people in what is now the Netherlands die in the resulting floods. Fatal floods struck in 1287, 1338, 1374, 1394 and 1396. After each, residents fixed the dikes and moved right back in.

● On Nov. 14, 1851, “Moby-Dick,” a novel by Herman Melville about the voyage of the whaling ship Pequod, is published. “Moby-Dick” is now considered a classic of Ameri-can literature and contains one of the most famous opening lines in fiction: “Call me Ish-mael.”

● On Nov. 15, 1867, the first stock ticker is unveiled in New York City. The advent of the ticker revolutionized the stock market by making up-to-the-minute prices available to investors around the country. Prior to this, information from the New York Stock Ex-change traveled by mail or messenger.

● On Nov. 20, 1923, the U.S. Patent Of-fice grants Patent No. 1,475,074 to 46-year-old inventor and newspaperman Garrett Morgan for his three-position T-shape pole traffic signal. By having a position other than just “Stop” and “Go,” it regulated crossing vehicles more safely than earlier signals had.

● On Nov. 16, 1959, “The Sound of Mu-sic” premieres on Broadway. While the real-life Maria did marry Count Georg von Trapp and become stepmother to his children, she never did the other things shown in the mu-sical, such as run singing through the Salz-burg, Austria, mountains.

● On Nov. 19, 1969, Brazilian soccer great Pelé scores his 1,000th professional goal. Under Pelé’s leadership, Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970. Dur-ing his career, Pelé scored 1,282 goals in 1,363 games.

● On Nov. 18, 1978, People’s Temple leader Jim Jones leads hundreds of his fol-lowers in a mass murder-suicide at their commune in Guyana. Cult members who refused to take the cyanide-laced fruit-fla-vored drink were forced to do so at gunpoint or shot. The death toll was 913, including a U.S. congressman who was investigating the commune.

What are they worth?

A: The bears were marketed during Ted Kennedy’s unsuccessful, 1980 campaign for the Democratic nomination for president, when he ran against Jimmy Carter. In the past few years, their value has skyrocketed and then plummeted. At one point, the value was in the upper hundreds. Cur-rently, they are available on the Internet for $75 to $100. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Antique Mugs and Brush Stir up a Lather Q: This shaving mug has been in our family since the early 1950s. It is marked on the bottom with the word and number “Germa-ny -- 99.” The multi-colored flowers are in relief against a heavily embellished gold background. We also still have the shaving brush that came with it. The mug was given to my dad, who was a painter and paperhanger, by the owners of a home he was working in. Any information you can provide on the history of our mug will be appreciated.

A: Shaving mugs were used in the 1800s and early 1900s. Many were made in Germany and exported to the United States. Without a manufac-turer’s mark, it can be impossible to identify the ac-tual maker. “Ninety-nine” is a design number. Both antique shaving mugs and brushes are very popular collectibles. Your vintage shaving mug and brush are selling in antiques shops in the range of $50 to $75.

Q: This enclosed mark is on the bot-tom of a small pitcher that I have. I’ve had it for a long time, but I don’t remember where or when I acquired it. The pitcher is 5 inches tall and decorated with green flowers and leaves against a white background. What can you tell me about my pitcher?

A: Homer Laughlin China Co. made your pitcher. The company was founded in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1877 and continues today to successfully produce china. Semi vitreous china is ironstone and used for dinnerware and wash sets. Although the mark you enclosed is blurry, it is an eagle attacking a lion. It was used from 1897 to 1905. “Colonial” is the name of the pattern. Your pitcher would probably be worth $25 to $35.

Q: I have two Ted Kennedy stuffed bears that were made for his 1980 presiden-tial campaign. Each bear is approximately 18 inches tall, stuffed with plush fabric and has a life-like, soft vinyl face. It is in mint condition. The bears have tags with the words “Teddy Bears -- 1980 -- A Unique Collectible.” Califor-nia Stuffed Toys made them.

Vintage shaving mugs and shaving brushes are collectible.

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson

Tina Mickelson PGA Photo by Paul Nassi

Achieving desired trajectory Sometimes we are faced with a shot where we need a little higher or lower trajectory than we might expect with our selected club. Rather than taking a different club to accommodate desired trajectory instead of desired distance, try this:

Higher trajectory: If you want your shot to have a little higher trajectory take your normal stance, set up to the ball and turn your head, looking up in the sky to the point where you want your ball to go. Hold that position, turning your head back to the ball. As you turn to look high in the sky, a few things will happen. Your right shoulder will lower a little bit, your swing path will be a little more shallow, and some of your weight will shift to your right side. All of this will promote a more lofted shot.

Lower trajectory: Set up to the ball with your normal address. Turn your head to view your intended ball flight, making sure you don’t look above your intended line. By keeping your head low your shoulders will remain level and your weight will remain evenly distributed. This pro-motes a steeper swing, which causes a delofted club face at impact. The result is lower trajectory.
