Last spring, Wasco High School Assistant Super-intendent Rob Cobb ad-dressed parents who were concerned about the closing of North Kern Vocational Training Center.

Cobb was born and raised in Paradise, where fi res wiped out the entire town last summer. He start-ed high school in Happy Camp, Calif., which is just west of Yreka, and gradu-

ated from Hoover High in Fresno. He met his future wife at Hoover High.

Upon receiving his bachelor of science in bi-ology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he thought he would become a fi shing biologist. However, “Fish-ing isn’t what one usually thinks of when relocating from San Luis Obispo to Wasco,” Cobb said.

In addition, Cobb was getting married right after graduation and his fi ancée,

Keri, was already an assis-tant planner for the City of Wasco. So, he relocated to Wasco.

He obtained his teaching credential from Fresno Pa-cifi c and continued his edu-cation at University of La Verne, where he received his administrative creden-tial.

“It took a while for me to adjust to moving from the coast to a community in the middle of the val-ley,” Cobb said. “But, we’ve made a great home for our family and love everything about Wasco, especially the sense of community and the people.”

Cobb taught biology at Wasco High for eight years and was invited to move to the district offi ce, where he became principal of cur-riculum instruction.

In 2018, he was invited to apply for the newly cre-ated assistant s u p e r i n t e n -dent position.

In this role, Cobb held a meeting for c o n c e r n e d parents and students in June 2019 to discuss how the district was going to im-plement some of the classes that NKVTC offered.

His team worked long and hard to fi nalize new classes for the fall. They came up with four options Early College Career Path-ways for students:

Industrial automation (where a student can con-tinue his/her education at Bakersfi eld College for an associate of science in in-dustrial automation),

Public safety (where a student can transfer to BC and get an AS degree in Ad-ministration of Justice).

Public health (where a student can obtain an AS degree in public health Sci-ence at BC), and

Construction man-

agement (where a student can get an AS degree inconstruction management).

Cobb stated that a teamof people got on board tocome up with the new class-es to replace what was lostby the closing of NKVTC. He also mentioned that be-cause of the new schedules, students can begin their chosen pathway during their freshman year.

In addition, he said the school is on a modifi edblock schedule, where onMondays, Tuesdays andFridays, the school is on a regular six-period schedule.(Each class is one hour.) On Wednesdays, fi rst, third and fi fth period will each be two hours, while on Thursdays, second, fourth and sixth pe-riod will also have two-hour blocks.

He mentioned that, withthis program, many students

in the four areas would be able to continue their edu-cation at a four-year college or seek employment imme-diately after high school. “Ifa student follows a careerpathway as set up, they cangraduate from Wasco Highwith a certifi cate in their particular area,” he added.

Cobb mentioned that about 40 years ago, therewere a lot of openings in businesses that did notrequire a college educa-tion; however, times have changed and taking collegecourses opens up more op-tions to students.

“The decision to go to college is not absolute,”Cobb added. “There is noright or wrong answer.”

and she loves the changes.Principal Oscar Luna welcomed everyone to the fi rst-

ever Back to School night at Palm Avenue. He introduced Vice Principal Zachery Ellis.

In addition, Luna described the school’s mission state-ment and explained the three values the school desires in its students which are academics, character and leadership.

Counselor Elena Contreras discussed the safety of all the students and how important safety is to the individual schools and the district as a whole.

While visiting classrooms, the question was asked who attended Palm Avenue as an elementary student, and sev-eral students in Mr. Ballard’s sixth-grade class raised their hand. In fact, the majority of the students in the classroom attended Palm Avenue as fi fth graders. Students shouted out the best thing about attending Palm Avenue is that they won’t get lost.

Yet in Rosa Perkins’ seventh-and-eighth-grade math class, no one raised his/her hand. “I guess they are shy,” Perkins remarked.

Resource Specialist Jacquelyn Stoncipher was at Thom-as Jefferson in the same position last year. “I’m excited to be here at Palm Avenue,” she said.

“We’ve made a great home for our family and love

everything about Wasco, especially the sense of

community and the people.”

Bengals varsity beats Southern Ravens, 44-0

Coach Bernal talks to the team after the game. Team huddle at the end of the game.

Sgt. Martinez takes over substation

He loves coming from a small community and feels people in a small community know each other and are very connected.

to stop and talk with deputies about criminal activity expressing their con-cerns.

“With the community and law en-forcement working together, we should see the amount of criminal activity decrease,” Martinez said.

According to Martinez, his de-partment is currently investigating the ages of those charged and/or ar-rested and will come up with addi-tional information that could lead the sheriff’s office to focus their efforts.

Martinez has been a familiar face around Wasco for several years, prior to replacing former Sergeant Augustine Moreno. He joined the county in 1998 as a reserve deputy sheriff.

“I became a full-time sheriff’s dep-

uty in 2000 and was a reserve police officer with the Ridgecrest Police De-partment from 1993-1998,” Martinez said. “After completing the Sheriff’s Academy in Bakersfield and complet-

ing the field taining program, I was assigned to the Rosamond substation.”

Martinez spent two years in Ro-samond, and since then has been a

metro patrol deputy, field training of-ficer and senior deputy. “On Aug. 17, 2019, I was promoted to sergeant and assigned to Wasco city substation,” Martinez said. “I am also a SWAT cri-

sis negotiator, as well as a college instructor where I teach emer-gency vehicle operations, tactical communications and vehicle pull-overs.”

Martinez was born and edu-cated in Ridgecrest. “I have spent my whole life in Kern County, and I haven’t regretted it at all,” Mar-tinez said.

He loves coming from a small community and feels people in

a small community know each other and are very connected. “You seldom have this type of environment in a larger city,” he added.

PARCEL NUMBERING SYSTEM EXPLANATION

A parcel numbering system is a numerical system for referring to each parcel or property within Kern County. The standard parcel numbering system consists of, first, the map book number; secondly, the page number within the map book, and block number if one exists; and the parcel number within the block. By this system a county is divided into geographical areas called map books, each map book into geographical areas called pages, each page into blocks, and each block into parcels as owned and used. The maps referred to are available for inspection in the office of the Kern County Assessor - Recorder at 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Second Floor, Bakersfield, California 93301. Sandra Wilson OliverMarch 26, 1951 –

Aug. 17, 2019 A memorial service was

held for Sandra Wilson Oli-ver, 68, who died peacefully at home in Bakersfield Aug. 17, 2019.

Sandy was the fourth of seven children born in Was-co to Desmond and Mamie Wilson. She grew up on the family farm and loved the outdoors. She graduated from Wasco High School in 1969. A decade later she married the love of her life and life partner Kenny Oli-ver. Their union lasted 40 years and was blessed with three children.

Sandy worked in the real estate industry for more than four decades. She

opened several branches, including Atlas Capital, Fallbrook Mortgage and National Bank of La Jolla. Those experiences led to her partnership with First National Home Finance, where she developed deep ties to the real estate com-munity and was widely ad-

mired by her peers for her honesty and integrity.

Fun-loving, her wit and infectious laughter always signaled that she was in the middle of a good time with the people who meant the most. Her creativity was on full display for every holi-day, but none more so than Christmas. It was her favor-ite time of the year and she enjoyed setting out her vast collection of nutcrackers. She had impeccable taste and put it to good use when she designed their new home. She was stylish and enjoyed baking as much as she liked teaching others how to do so.

Sandy was also head-strong and determined in ev-erything she did in life, but equally compassionate, lov-

ing and fiercely loyal to her family and friends, always leading the way to another great adventure with them.

She enjoyed retreating to South Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, where she was usually successful in hedging her bets against the casino’s odds. Her garden was immaculate, and she loved shopping for the next “great deal.”

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Shirley Hancock, her aunt Maxine Holley and nephew Richard LaRue. She is survived by her hus-band, and her children Kari Boyd and son-in-law J.R., Sara Walker and son-in-law Clint, and Matt Oliver and wife Lauren.

Those also left to mourn

her memory include her sib-lings Sue Vallejo and hus-band Pete, Rod Shaw and wife Phyllis, Desmond Wil-son and wife Candy, Kay LaRue and husband Rick, Brenda Starr, her mother-in-law Nelda Dial, numerous nieces, nephews, family, and treasured friends.

Sandy’s life took on a new meaning when she became a grandmother. She loved and adored her grandchildren, Andrew and Cooper Boyd, and Carter Oliver, and eager-ly awaited the pending birth of Blake Oliver.

A special thanks to the UCSF-ALS Treatment Clinic, Hoffmann Hospice, Laura, Laurel, Tyler, Jen-nifer, Chie, Vitce and Elva of Interim Healthcare, Drs.

Howard and Karen Nizar and staff, and Dr. Jerri Wil-liams and staff. Tremendousappreciation to Sandy’s full-time caregivers Stephanie and Diana who provided her final days with companion-ship, care, and support.

In lieu of flowers, Sandy’s memory may be honored with a donation in her name to any of thefollowing charities dear toher heart: Wasco Toys forTigers, 1618 Sunset St.,Wasco 93280; Garces Me-morial High School - SandyOliver Scholarship Fund, 2800 Loma Linda Drive, Bakersfield 93305;or The ALS Association GoldenWest Chapter, P.O.
