President’s Message: Well my friends, welcome to what feels like a whole new world because I doubt that any

of us have ever lived through a situation like this. Over the years I’ve seen people from

other countries living through similar situations but honestly thought that the chances

were low that we’d ever experience it over here. Surprise…

Looking around recently I’ve seen lots of things that I would never have expected including not being able to find a

roll of toilet paper. Made me think of Jack Malcolm when I first heard that and anyone who ever went to a Maynard

Car Club meeting over the years knows why. That club had this thing about toilet paper. Visitors, like me, got a

complimentary roll and it was always at least one of the raffle prizes. Perhaps Jack knew something that we didn’t.

No matter what my roll is still stashed somewhere in my trunk and I take comfort in just knowing that it’s there.

I’ve seen things lately that have made me scratch my head, some good and some not so good. I’ve seen instances of

American Ingenuity where people have decided to make the best of a bad situation by taking to the outdoors. I’ve

seen lots of four wheelers out there, couples walking down the roads or working in their yards and old cars pulled

out of moth balls and rumbling around. You see things like that and you get the feeling that we, as a country, will

keep our heads and make it through this thing. On the other hand, we’ve seen people swarming to the cape, ending

up all crowded together down there and upsetting the residents who can’t go out of their doors without bumping

into somebody. You see things like that and can’t help but feel that this might take a while after all.

Hopefully you’ve been getting the messages that we’ve sent out concerning the club’s response to the situation.

One of the things that we had to cancel was the club’s Spring Breakfast Run to The Carriage House in Winchendon. I

felt bad about this not only because I look forward to the event but also because Joe Gonynor has set this thing up

for us over that past years and we seemingly never experience good enough weather to take our cars out. This year

was the only time when the weather cooperated, and it would have been a great day to dust off your pride and joy

and take a ride. Joe’s also been setting up our Eldercare visits and it looks as if at least some of these will be

cancelled. Sorry Joe.

We are listening very closely to our elected officials and the CDC to be as safe as we can and will be making decisions

over the following weeks and months accordingly. What we know now is that our club meetings for the month of

April, both BOD and our General Meeting have been cancelled and that further gatherings will be reassessed as we

get more information.

To make sure that we all have the most updated news as it happens, I’ve been looking at our list of club member

email addresses derived from our club roster.

A handful of these would not accept email and my follow-up phone

calls proved unfruitful so I’ve had to delete these addresses.

It you’re a club member and have not been receiving

our communications and have a valid email address I ask that you let me know by sending me a note at

[email protected].

Also in the works is that our buddy, Tom Yoder, has been updating the Mid-State

website.

He always steps up when he’s needed, and this is no exception so thanks very much Tom.

As I spoke about earlier, I’ve seen people reacting many ways to our current situations.

I’ve seen people who are

intelligently following the CDC guidelines in place and I’ve seen way too many people who either think that this

whole thing is a sham or that they’re invincible and that bad things just can’t happen to them.

Please be smart

about this!

We, as a club, have taken the position that you need to keep yourself safe to keep us all

safe.

Be smart and be kind.

We’ll get through this thing.

The RMV is also extending the time during which newly registered vehicles must be inspected, which is typically within 7 days of the date of registration. • Any newly-registered non-commercial vehicle purchased between March 1, 2020 and March 31, 2020 must be inspected by May 31. • Any newly-registered non-commercial vehicle purchased between April 1, 2020 and April 31, 2020 must be inspected by June 30. In addition, during the declared emergency period, the RMV is waiving the requirement of 540 Code Mass. Regs. § 4.08(2), which requires that inspection stations must remain open and available for inspections for a minimum of six hours per day, five days per week. Inspection stations are excused from compliance with this provision during the length of the COVID-19 emergency.
