NORTH SCOTTSDALE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Vol. 37, Issue 3

March 2015

Finding the Path to the Mountaintop By Pastor David Wasson

I am reading a book right now called,

“Take this Bread: A Radical Conversion”. It is

wri en by Sara Miles, a journalist who was

born and raised as an atheist, but found faith

when she walked into a church and received

communion for the first me.

Here is what she has to say about the

Chris an faith:

But this is my belief: that at the heart

of Chris anity is a power that con n-

ues to speak to and transform us. … It

proclaims against reason that the

hungry will be fed, that those cast

down will be raised up, and that all

things, including my own failures, are being made new. It offers food without excep ons to the worthy and

unworthy, the screwed-up and pious, and then commands everyone to do the same. It doesn’t promise to

solve or erase suffering but to transform it, pledging that by loving one another, even through pain, we will

find more life. And it insists that by opening ourselves to strangers, the despises or frightening or unintelli-

gible other, we will see more and more of the holy, since, without excep on, all people are one body:

God’s.

Miles reminds us that the Chris an faith is not something that has happened; it is something that is s ll hap-

pening. And even more than that it is something that is happening to all of us. All people are worthy of God’s

grace and presence; and even more than that, all people are able to experience it on an individual and personal

level as well.

One of the great enjoyments of being in ministry is having the opportunity to hear people’s stories. People

welcome me into their lives and invite me to be part of their journeys of faith. I walk with them through the good

and the bad; I see God’s grace and presence burst into their lives in the most unexpected ways and places.

Ministry has taught me that there is no one universal way that God enters

into our lives. God speaks to us through moments of chaos and confusion as well

as moments of s llness and silence. God comes to us when we are experiencing

both tragedy and joy. God’s presence knows no barriers. There is no formula that

grants us access to God’s grace; it is just available to us always.

We remember moments in our religious tradi on where God entered the

lives of ordinary individuals. God appeared to Moses on Mount Sinai and Moses

entered the cloud and went up the mountain for 40 days. And then God ap-

peared to some of the disciples – Peter, James and John – on a high mountain

when Jesus was transformed in front of them, appearing with and speaking to

Moses and Elijah. These moments not only defined who these individuals were,

but also who God was and who God was calling them to be.

I guess we could call it their “mountain top” experience.

If there is one thing that these stories teach us, it is that Chris anity is not

about believing alone; it is concerns experiencing it as well. It is about experienc-

ing God in our midst, on a personal and transforming level.

We may never literally experience something like the mountain tops of Mo-

ses and the three disciples; but I can say with certainty that at some point in our

lives we will all find ourselves on a metaphorical mountaintop. We will all experi-

ence a moment when God comes into our midst and boldly proclaims the Good

News to us. This moment may happen in the distress of a hospital room, in the

quiet of the desert during a morning hike or in room full of laughs and friends. It

may happen in the liturgy of a worship service or it may happen in a costume pa-

rade full of hundreds of children during Trunk or Treat. It may happen as we put

our children to bed and sing to them, as we care for an elderly family member or

as we gather around a table and share a meal with others. It may happen in the

noisy commo on of a crowded place or it may happen in the peaceful silence of

an empty space.

But it will be your mountaintop.

So this – the lives that we lead, the people that we touch, the ministry that

we take part in – this is our mountaintop. And it is on this mountaintop God

comes into our lives and shines his light upon us. It is on this mountaintop that

God reveals himself to us, boldly declaring his love for us and calling us into his

ministry.

May this season of Lent lead you to experience God in new ways.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor David

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! FOR THE

WONDERFUL RECEPTION OF OUR CONCERT!

Both Charlene and I were very blessed by the applause, the standing ovations, and the kind words in response to our concert on February 15.

We were honored that so many of Charlene’s family were able to be present and so many oth-ers attended also. And, we have been super blessed by your kind words, not only about the concert, but also about the CDs that Tim Stumpp had recorded earlier. And we were honored that he was able to do the sound at the concert.

The piano and organ complement each other, and four hands can accomplish more than just two; so for many years, in many churches I’ve done duets with other pianists. It’s a great privi-lege.

How thankful I am that Charlene Prince en-

joys playing duets also, so that we can bless you with four hands instead of just two. Thanks again for your precious response. It was our honor and privilege!

On March 29, the North Scottsdale United Methodist Church Handbell Choir is honored to be performing with the Scottsdale Arizona North Stake Choir at the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-day Saints, 6840 East Gold Dust Road, Scottsdale. Last year they had over 90 people in their “district” choir for their Easter Devotional. Our Handbell Choir was chosen to perform for this Devotional after performing for them at the Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Service last year. The Inter-Faith Service included people from several denominations. However, we were the only “outsiders” chosen to join them for this special occasion.

At 7:00 p.m. on Palm Sunday, we’d love to have you join us as we strive to show God’s love to this congregation. Your presence is always a great encouragement. Thanks for the great blessing you are to so many!

Sincerely,

Donna Marie

ONE MORE THANK YOU!

To Pastor George Cushman and his congre-gation for their attendance in our Ash Wednesday Service and his very meaningful sermon for the beginning of Lent. Thank you so much!

NSUMC at the Veterans’ Stand Down By Bill and Carol Adams

NSUMC provided 16 volunteers to work at the Stand Down this year. It was a two day event to provide goods and services to homeless and at-risk veterans to help them to find shelter, provide better food and clothing services and availability to the courts for legal help.

It was a rewarding experience for all of us and we felt we were helping these men and women veterans get back on their feet after sacrificing so much to help to keep this nation free.

Our United Methodist Women provided over 50 sets of sweat pants and tops which were very much appreciated. They also provided $350 in gift cards to supply emergency items for the women who needed immediate help with food and medical necessities. Church members al-so provided over 50 pairs of men's jeans.

Our thanks to the Mission Team who helped put this together and to the awe-some generosity of our Church members.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The church is establishing a student aid pro-gram for our congregation members and staff to pursue Christian education. Our endowment fund will provide the funds, because investing in the growth of our human resources is as important as investing in our physical facilities.

Candidates for this student aid include minis-ters, Christian education directors, Christian mu-sic directors, Christian youth directors, Christian missionaries, and church members who want to enroll in the United Methodist Certification Pro-gram.

A copy of the Christian Aid Application form can be obtained in the Church office. Applica-tions for this coming Fall semester must be sub-mitted not later than May 30.

Positions Available

Your Desert Southwest United Method-ist Foundation is currently seeking a Planned Giving Officer to work with all of the churches in the conference.

In addition, the Foundation has recent-ly formed a Grants Committee, looking for individuals from the local church with ex-perience in this arena to sit on the commit-tee. “We are looking for guidance and leadership as we pick a project and apply for grant funding.”

For additional information, please con-tact our church office staff or Lucille Ster-ling, Executive Director, at 602.798.8202.

North Scottsdale United Method-ist Church’s 2015 summer day camp is entitled G FORCE, God’s Love in Action. This camp adventure will be held in June at NSUMC. At G-Force day camp kids will explore how to put their faith into action. In this mis-sion-focused VBS, kids experi-ence God’s unstoppable love and discover how to fuel up and move in and through life with God. Campers will experience scripture stories through drama, art, cooking, games, science and puppetry. There will also be a 12’ waterslide for the campers to enjoy on Friday!

Decoration donations - Please collect and send in hula hoops, a checkered flag, auto rac-ing decorations, skate board and dirt bike themed items. We would also like to receive dona-tions of Walmart, Oriental Trading or Home Depot gift cards.

Snack donations - We would love grocery store gift cards for our snack station:

Volunteers - We need volunteers to help specific stations such as snacks, crafts, song, games, science, Bible discovery, Pre-K leaders, childcare, puppetry and drama. We also need volunteers to shuttle children from station to station. All of these positions are available for the week or daily.

Bakers - We need a few bakers to supply our volunteer leaders with daily snacks. These volunteer youth leaders so appreciate the daily treats for “Leader Lounge.” It would be awe-some if we could have four dozen items daily.

Please contact Terry Wright if you have questions at 480-860-9573 or [email protected].

VBS Volunteer Meeting Dates We will have two VBS volunteer meetings this spring.

Our first meeting will be Sunday, April 26 at 11 AM in the Education Office.

The second meeting will be Sunday, May 31 at 11AM (same location).

All the materials will be in the Education Office by the first meeting so you may check out this fun curriculum.

If you are interested in volunteering or just learning more about our VBS, please join us at these meetings. If you are unable to attend the meetings but would like to volun-teer, please email Terry Wright at [email protected].

Please bring a friend!!!

Thank you to our first and second grade Sunday School class-room for sharing their “Bucket Filler” milestone with us on Febru-ary 8. Their teachers presented this concept by reading them the book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud. The book’s message is that we fill each other’s invisi-ble buckets when we show respect and kindness to oth-ers. When we are unkind to others, we dip in their bucket and it empties our own. Our happiness increases when we treat each other well.

Sunday, March 1, our preschool and kindergarten class will be celebrating their Lord’s Prayer Milestone during our 10 AM service. The Sunday School teachers have been working with the children to help them learn this very important prayer. It is a prayer that expresses God’s desire to have an ongoing relation-ship with us. Parents please mark your calendar for this celebra-tion!! All participants will receive a gift. Our cherub choir will al-so help them celebrate by singing “This Little Light of Mine” dur-ing the service.

GRIEF RECOVERY PROGRAM DURING MARCH

We have had a visitor from the icy part of the country for the last few years. He has volun-teered to lead a grief recovery series of three sessions on Tuesdays at 1:00 PM, March 3 through March 17 in room 12.

He is a Stephen Leader and Ministry Mentor in the Detroit Conference after serving as the head of leadership development for his confer-ence for eight years. His doctorate is from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. His focus was on how different personality types reach out to God, to the “neighbor” and to the disparate parts of themselves as they go through life challenges such as grief. The last church he served as a full time minister used this model of grief recovery for over ten years. Besides a profile of what often are the stages one goes through as grief is experienced, he has a recording from his former doctor that looks at the physical challenges that can crop up as one is in the grief recovery process.

Everyone goes through grief in their own way. A key part of these sessions will be the shared experience of those who attend. While you may come to learn, you also have im-portant insights and feelings that can add to the conversation in helpful ways.

His full name is the Rev. Dr. G. Charles Sonquist, Jr. but he prefers to be called Chuck. He will be in the area until after Easter. If you have questions feel free to call him on his cell phone 248-515-6537. He presently serves as Minister of Pastoral Care of Troy United Meth-odist Church in Troy, Michigan. Feel free to in-vite a friend or neighbor.

NSUMC offers lots of opportunities for you to become more engaged in our community. Here are a few that are either ongoing or coming up soon.

GOD’S Deeds. This year Bishop Bob gave each congregation $2,000 to do something creative in their community. So, what to do?

At first we thought of Drive-Thru Prayer. But while Drive-Thru Prayer is still a good idea, it didn’t seem to quite fit with the Bishop’s direction to us.

Pastor Nancy and a couple of members of the Mission Committee put their heads together and came up with the idea of Generous Outreaching Disciples’ Deeds (GOD’S Deeds).

The idea is to recognize unsung heroes in our community, to share our joy of faith with the neighborhood, and to address unmet needs. And finally, to engage the congregation to volunteer with acts of kindness.

We hope to do one act of kindness (such as bring dessert to our fire fighters or pizza to school staff) each month. We’re still working on the details but hope to have a schedule within the next month.

We are looking for volunteers to help us. Time will be minimal – about 2 hours. Interested in volunteering to work on the committee or for an individual activity? Contact Emilie Duncan, Laura Oldham or Jane Pearson.

UMOM Watkins Dinners. We provide two dinners a month for the residents of the Watkin’s Homeless Shelter. That includes the food and serving. UMW serves one evening and the larger congregation, under the leadership of Rich Jensen, serves at the other. It is a great experience for the whole family. Sign-up sheets for donations of food and volunteers serving are located near the Mission Table in the Fellowship Hall.

Books for Vets. We collect books and magazines and deliver them to the Phoenix VA Hospital. They add them to their library for the pleasure of the patients and their families. Clean out your book cases and bring your books to the Mission Table.

Finally, thank all of you who helped with Christmas Angels (hope you saw the thank you cards on the Mission Table) and StandDown. Your generosity makes a huge difference in the lives of people in our community.

On Ministry Sunday, March 22, we will share “cardboard testimonies” of those who silently give witness to how God has changed their lives. We are encouraging children, youth, adults and families to participate.

Those giving the testimonies will silently come forward, present a “before” poster for 3-4 seconds and then flip it to the “after” poster (3-6 words). Each poster presentation will be coordinated through Janice Grandy (mobile: 480-227-7668, email [email protected]) for the cardboard and text.

Please give prayerful consideration to sharing your testimony.
