Growing degree days are calculated by taking the average temperaturefor the day and subtracting the base temperature (50 degrees) from theaverage to assess how many growing days are attained.

One of the great astronomical joys of the summer is the anticipation of Perseid meteors glitteringthrough the starry heavens. This shower blossoms annually when the Earth passes near the orbit ofComet Swift-Tuttle and encounters the debris left behind by this interloper which passes near the sunevery 130 years. When the moon is favorable, like this year, it has been a tradition for me to lie out ina comfortable sleeping bag on a ground tarp and enjoy the show. Serious meteor observing isn’t for the

fainthearted. It involves being vigilant over numerous hours of time, recording the frequency of shooting stars every 10minutes, and refraining from distractions like music or intense conversation. However, you don’t have to be a seriousobserver to enjoy the Perseids, although a little bit of insomnia won’t hurt. This year, the activity maxes on Mondaymorning with rates of about 60 meteors per hour, but Saturday night into Sunday morning will also produce enjoyablenumbers of speedy, bright meteors. There is no need to go outside right after it gets dark. Before midnight, meteor eventsare like raindrops splashing against the back window of a moving vehicle. Most drops miss the glass. After midnight, however, the Earth spins into the Perseid swarm and our local view becomes more exciting, similar to looking throughthe front windshield of a car moving through a downpour. Meteor can pop. If you are going to host a Perseid party, makesure that when the observing begins, cots and sleeping bags face northeast. Lie back and watch the sky overhead becausenormally that is where it is the darkest. At midnight, meteors will seem to radiate skyward from low in the NE, but bydawn, the constellation of Perseus the Hero will be much higher in the sky, allowing observers to catch meteors diverg-ing from all directions. A map locating the Perseid radiant is online at www.astronomy.org.

Word Games for Kids: Words in Words

You can sometimes make words

using the letters in a larger word. For example, from the word “tube” you can make “be,” “bet,” “but,” and “tub.” Now onto a harder one: how many words can you make from the word “sunburn?” (Hint: we found 19.)

Answers:Bun, buns, burn, burns, bus, nub,

nubs, nun, nuns, rub, rubs, run, runs, snub, sub, sun, urn, urns, us.

Quick Tips: Organizing TipOrganizing and storing your garden

tools correctly can help them last a lifetime. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with mason’s sand and add about one quart of clean motor oil. Mix well to distribute the oil throughout the sand. To clean and lubricate your shovel or other garden hand tools, plunge them into the sand a few times before storing. You can also store these tools with the blades in the sand to help prevent rust. If you don’t want to use that much sand, you can fi ll a large coffee can with sand and oil for your smaller hand tools.

Safety TipIf you are spending time in the great

outdoors this summer, you should know how to spot poisonous plants. The old adage “leaves of three, let it be” is good advice, as poison oak and ivy have clusters of three leaves. If you do get the poisonous oil from these plants on your skin, you should immediately rinse the affected area with rubbing alcohol or a degreasing soap like dishwashing liquid. After washing, rinse for several minutes. An antihistamine can be used to help with the itching.

Healthy Living TipWhat is the best sunscreen? Well,

it turns out it is simply the one you will use. Lotions, sprays, and sticks are all equally effective, so buy what your family prefers. Dermatologists suggest getting one product for the whole family, so that you don’t need to carry around multiple bottles.

FEATURED CRIMES:

BURGLARYCrime Stoppers needs your help in solving a burglary that occurred to a vehicle during the evening hours on 7-18-12 while it was parked at the intersection of Primrose and Meadowrose. The unknown suspect(s) entered the vehicle by breaking a window with a rock. Once inside of the vehicle the dashboard was taken apart and a Pioneer stereo and the sub-woofers were taken. Additional damage to the vehicle included all four tires being slashed, the paint on the vehicle was scratched on the hood and sides with the word “watts” appearing in numerous areas on the vehicle. The windshield wipers were also broken off of the vehicle. Prior to this incident an additional vehicle was damaged by having the initials “RP” scratched into the paint. If you have information that can solve this or any other crime please call Crime Stoppers at 686-0400 or the High School Crime Stoppers at 682-4185. You can remain anonymous and may earn up to $1,000 in reward.

Prevention Tips: •Make your home look occupied. •Even if for a short time, lock all doors, windows, garages, etc. •Don’t let mail, papers, etc. build up. •Arrange for lawn to be mowed while away. •Never leave keys in “secret” hiding places, burglars know where to look. •Install a burglar alarm system.

Did You Know: Left-Handers August 13th is International Left-Handers Day.

•Around 11 percent of Americans and Europeans are left-handed.

•Men are more likely to be left-handed than women.

•People of Asian or Hispanic lineage are slightly less likely to be left-handed

than other ethnic backgrounds.

•No gene for left-handedness has been identifi ed, but it does seem to run strongly

in families.

•Most left-handers draw fi gures facing to the right.

•There is a high tendency in twins for one to be left-handed.

•Some famous left-handers: Queen Victoria, Alexander the Great, Babe Ruth,

Richard Dreyfus, Ross Perot, Ronald Reagan, Bob Dylan, Harpo Marx,

Ted Williams, Billy the Kid, Benjamin Franklin, Michelangelo,

Nelson Rockefeller, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein,

Ludwig van Beethoven, Ringo Starr, Helen Keller, and Jack the Ripper.

Heat Stroke and the Elderly According to the U.S. National Institute on Aging, seniors are at greater risk for

heat stroke and heat exhaustion. As people age, they are less able to adapt to increasing temperatures. Heat can also exacerbate medical conditions that they may already have.

If an older person has heart disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,or dementia, they are at increased risk of body overheating, also called hyperthermia. Trouble walking can also contribute. There is an increased risk due to dehydration, often caused by medications that older people take. In fact, in some older persons, the sweatglands may not work as effectively, leading to overheating.

What should you look for to check for heat exhaustion or heat stroke? Symptoms caninclude a rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry fl ushed skin, lightheadedness, confusion, or disorientation. If you fi nd someone you believe is suffering from the effects of the heat, you should immediately move them to a cool place and call 911. Urge them to lie down and remove any heavy or tight-fi tting clothing. Apply cold compresses to the skin and encourage them to drink water as they are able.

Seniors should try to stay in a cool environment whenever there is excessive heat outside. If there is no air conditioning or fans in their residence, they should go to public places with air conditioning, like a senior center, library, shopping mall, or a friend’s home.

Quick Tips: Car Tip

One of the easiest ways to protect the fi nish on your vehicle is to always try to park in the shade. Your best bet is always a garage, but you can minimize damage to your car even if you can’t park in a garage. Finding a shady place will help. If you park under a tree, watch for excessive sap or bird droppings, as these can cause some damage. If there is no shade available, use a window shade to help minimize the sun’s damage to the interior of your car.
