The theme is “Be Still.”Chaperones are still needed for the youth retreat. We need one male and one female who are willing to transport the kids and actively lead this group through the weekend’s activities. Contact a youth committee member with questions.
Learn At-Large Adult Education Program - by aNdrea delliNger joNes
Learn At-Large is an educational initiative that complements Millbrook’s weekly Sunday school and Bible Study offerings. This initiative aims to engage a broad range of churchgoers with educational opportunities both on and off the church’s campus to take advantage of God’s capacity for good teaching wherever it may occur. The topics will vary and may be explored in a single event, or in a day full of related activities, or in a recurring two- or three-week study. Content for reflection will come in diverse forms that may include book groups; movies; museum exhibits; plays; presentations; workshops; conferences; midweek studies; and sacred art, music, and site experiences. Some events will include a cost, but most will be free and accessible to as many churchgoers as possible.

September Cook’s Kornor - by aNgie hooMaNi
All good things must come to an end! Summer is winding down and as people are returning from vacation, it is time for us to resume our Wednesday Night Dinners. This fall we will have dinner on the first and third Wednesdays. Team 1 will kick off the year on September 4th by providing their great Chicken and Beef Tacos. On the 18th, Team 2 plans to serve Chicken Tetrazzini. To end the month, Team 3 will host a Sunday Potluck on September 29th.Pat Strong will no longer be able to help Team 2 with shopping and cooking. Also, Chandler, Angela and Jim Hatchell will no longer be helping us with clean-up after the meal. These 4 people have been a great part of our team for many years and they will all really be missed. We thank them for their many years of dedication. They have made a tremendous contribution to us.
We are happy that Josh Patterson will again be here to support both Teams 1 and 2 with clean-up after the Wednesday night meals. If there are other members of our church family who feel they can assist in the kitchen on Wednesdays or provide a dessert, we would greatly appreciate it! We hope you are as excited as we are about getting together again on Wednesday evenings for our Church family meals and programs. We hope you will join us this year for our Wednesday Nights of Food, Fellowship and Fun.

Meet These Millbrookers
Tom & Celia Driver Tom and Celia are both native North Carolinians, and each grew up on a farm--Tom in Fuquay Varina, and Celia, near Edenton. After graduation, Tom served in the US Army for four years and afterwards, he worked in the fields of civil engineering, surveying, utilities, homebuilding with Roebuck Homes, and with Sears in automotive and sports equipment sales, and as Customer Service Manager until retirement in 2002. Celia moved to Raleigh in 1971 to attend Hardbarger Business College, earned a legal/business degree, and was employed as Administrative Assistant to the CEO of PENNAMCO Mortgage Bankers for ten years. She continued her career at GE Capital Mortgage Ins. Corp. in Marketing, and then for 18 years as GE’s Legal Administrative Coordinator to the General Counsel until retirement in 2005.
During the summer of 1974, Tom and Celia met and visited Millbrook’s little chapel where they felt a unique warmth and energy. They saw the construction of the new church and continued to feel the need to belong to such an active church. They became engaged, joined Millbrook, and were married in November, 1975, in the current sanctuary. Tom and Celia have one daughter, Deana, and she and her husband, Warren, have made them happy grandparents of Alezandra, 13, and Anastasia, 11, who bring them immense joy and pleasure.
Through their years at Millbrook, Tom accompanied the youth on mission trips, participated in Habitat for Humanity projects, assisted in the relief and rebuilding efforts in Gulfport, Mississippi in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina, served twice as deacon, and usher for many years. Both Tom and Celia are members of the Heritage Sunday School class. Celia served on the Outreach, Personnel, and Nominating Committees, and as deacon. Because of her interest and passion for gardening, she designed the Labyrinth garden in 2006 and later, the Columbarium and Memorial Scatter Gardens. To further complement the meditational gardens, Celia applied for the grant through WRAL’s NC Beautiful program to obtain azaleas for non-profit organizations, and Millbrook was awarded 100 azaleas in 2009 and 50 in 2012. Both Tom and Celia continue to serve on the Labyrinth and Columbarium Committees and actively help to maintain all the gardens.
They enjoy their family and grandchildren, travel, church activities, painting, reading, nature walks, gardening, gym routines, and kayaking on the Chowan River. Tom especially enjoys watching all sports and playing golf.
Meet These Millbrookers
The Helms Family Sarah is originally from Tolland, CT and was a competitive swimmer at University of
Delaware. After graduation, Sarah moved to work at Duke University Hospital as a Med
Tech. Sarah and Jackson met in Raleigh, NC in 2005. Jackson was born and raised in Raleigh
and graduated from ECU with a degree in business administration. In 2009, after Sarah graduated
from Duke’s Pathologist Assistant program, they moved (with their basset hound, Duncan) to
Brooklyn for 4 years. As a hobby, Jackson was involved in improv comedy and Sarah got to spend
a lot of time in comedy venues. They married in CT in 2010 and welcomed Dorothy Jane in
2012. Seven months later, the family moved back to Raleigh. Ada Josephine joined the family in
2014 followed by Edith “Edie” James in 2016. Jackson works as a sales manager at Cisco Systems
and Sarah works as a Pathologists Assistant at Duke Raleigh Hospital. The family enjoys spending
time at Raleigh’s many parks, museums and greenways and going to the neighborhood pool.
The Helms family has been coming to Millbrook for nearly 2 years and have stated, “we love the
family-oriented ministry and having two amazing women ministers in Andrea and Rebecca.
The people of Millbrook have welcomed us whole heartedly and have made us feel at home
in this community.”
