a great conference. These UCF Institute of Government individuals put so much

    President’s Message (cont.)

We wish Marilyn all the best in her future adventures and we all will miss her very much. Her insight and knowledge for

the job she loved to do was remarkable.

I would like to thank the members for the opportunity to serve as your President. After serving as your 1st Vice President,

I have learned so much and have grown along with the membership. The Board would like to thank everyone who has

applied to serve on a committee. There were several applications submitted from very talented individuals, it made the

choices very hard for the Board members. We have so much talent in this profession, it is certainly impressive. The

committees are meeting and getting busy this year. There is so much to do! The Program Committee had their first

planning meeting for next year’s conference which is scheduled for June 11th through 14th, 2019 at the Orlando Rosen

Plaza. The Certification Committee is up and running as well as the Legislative Committee.

Do you have database/technological knowledge? We have a need for one more person that may be great with a data

base integrated website project. If you are that person, please contact me or submit your committee interest form.

We all know how dangerous our jobs can be and we all need to be aware of our surroundings. It is sad to say that West

Valley City, Utah lost one of their own on August 9, 2018. Jill Lynette Robinson worked as a Code Enforcement Officer

for over ten years and knew the inherited risks, however so many of us think something like this will never happen to us.

Please don’t take a risk, walk away and come back another day if you can. We are not in this profession for a job, it is

the love of the work that we do and the satisfaction of helping to change the communities we serve that is so gratifying.

Please be safe. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family members and the extended work family of this slain officer.

Our first board meeting was held July 23-24, 2018 and it was a wonderful opportunity to work on our strategic plan.

With new board members come fresh ideas - it was a long, but productive, meeting. Please remember you are always

welcome to come to our board meetings; we would love to see you there.

If you have any questions, comments, or issues that you would like for me to address at the next Board meeting, please

feel free to contact me at [email protected], or by phone 863-402-6915, or by fax 863-402-6651. The next meeting

will be October 8, 2018, however the location is not secured. The Board will be looking at hotel options for the 2020

conference. Watch the website for the location to be posted; you never know, we may be in your neck of the woods,

and we would love to see you at that Board meeting.

In closing, I would like to thank each of you for the hard work that you complete each and every day, for the compassion

that you have for enriching our lives, and making the communities that we live in a better place. With this summer heat

upon us, please stay hydrated and be safe out there while on and off the job.

I have made selections for this year’s education committee and the committee will be having our first

committee meeting in a few weeks. We already have a full agenda reviewing requests for continuing

education credits, decertification appeals, and Legal Issue Paper approvals. We will also be continuing the

rewrite of Fundamentals of Code Enforcement striving to bring it to completion. Following that, we will

begin the rewrite of Administrative Aspects of Code Enforcement. My committee, and the Board of

Directors, want to provide the most current, relevant, and up to date education and certification to its

    members.

The 2018/2019 Education and Certification committee membership:

Margaret (Peggy) M. Arraiz with the City of Fort Pierce

Joseph Oliva with the City of West Palm Beach

Jo Forti Associate member and Past President from the GCACE area

I am still looking for one member to complete the F.A.C.E. Education and

Certification Committee. Volunteer requirements are to be F.A.C.E. members in good standing and hold

F.A.C.E. certifications in Fundamentals of Code Enforcement (Level 1), Administrative Aspects of Code

Enforcement (Level 2), and Legal Issues in Code Enforcement (Level 3). It is also a preferred that a

volunteer hold F.A.C.E. certification in Officer Safety and Field Applications (Level 4) and be a Certified Code

Enforcement Professional. Please go to the F.A.C.E. website for more information and the committee

    interest form. http://face-online.org/about/committees/

I encourage you to obtain all of the certifications that F.A.C.E. has to offer and look towards the future. The Board would also like to encourage you to consider taking the Train the Trainer course September 6 – 7, 2018 in Orlando and becoming a certified F.A.C.E. trainer. It’s tailored to F.A.C.E., with our goal to increase the number of high-quality F.A.C.E. trainers across the state. I first want to thank the membership for their support, electing me to the position

of Second Vice President. The Board of Directors just concluded our July Board

meeting and produced a very positive strategic plan for 2018/2019. I look forward

to a very productive year with the Membership, Board, and the Education

    Committee.

How to Survive in a Fast-Paced World – Our New Normal!

Life is no longer about keeping up with the Joneses, people are just trying to match the pace of the information age race. Getting by day by day is like running a continuous marathon only stopping to catch a breath. However, you won’t run the risk of falling behind if you follow a few healthy tips throughout your day.

    “Time Management”

You know people who scurry from task to task, always checking e-mail, organizing something, making a call, running an errand, etc. Well, try these few tips to stay ahead and stay sane!

Complete most important tasks first – prioritize and stick to it!

Learn to say no – there is strength in saying NO!

Sleep at least 7-8 hours – it’s not selfish to put yourself first!

Devote your entire focus to the task at hand – success is one act after another!

Get an early start – energy is flowing early in the morning, maximize it!

Don't allow unimportant details to drag you down – focus on the big picture!

    Until next time Ciao*

The financial status of F.A.C.E. to date is good. Our accounts’ totals as of 7-31-18 were:

Operating (Fund) Account - $125,942.33; Scholarship account (Savings) - $6,584.84; Reserve Account (Savings)

    - $5,335.31 for a grand total of $137,862.48.

Your Board of Directors are watching their respective budgets and keeping spending down to a minimum.

F.A.C.E. is in great shape financially, membership is on an upward trend, so let’s keep growing our membership.

If you know anyone in Code Enforcement that is not a current member, bring them to a chapter meeting, and

encourage them to become a member of both your local chapter and F.A.C.E. Others that are already members

encourage them to get on a committee or run for office either locally or on the state Board. It can be hard work,

but such a growing opportunity, both professionally and personally.

Thank you all for placing your trust in me to be your Treasurer. I am honored.

Are you a numbers person? We are looking for people to be on a Finance Committee. If you are interested

please submit an application for committee (http://face-online.org/wp-

    content/uploads/FACE-Committee-Interest-Form-5-21-2018.doc). We will not meet

often, probably only a couple of times over the year.

We had a great F.A.C.E. Conference in June. If you weren’t able to make it, you missed

a good one. We had a couple of blips, but all in all it was successful and the views

    were beautiful.

I look forward to being your treasurer and working with our new Board of Directors this year.

A very enthusiastic thanks to fellow F.A.C.E. members for affording me this opportunity to serve the

organization as this year’s Sergeant-At-Arms. Also, a hearty welcome to the other newly elected Board

members: Cindy Drake, Village of Wellington, our new 1st Vice President and President Elect for the next

year; Michael Hauserman, Palm Beach County, the new Second Vice-President; Lily Ramcharran, Orange

County, the new Third Vice President; Dorothy Hird, Seminole County, the new Board Secretary; and Michelle

Forstrom, Fernandina Beach, the new Treasurer. Of course it’s actually “welcome again” for Cindy Drake and

Michael Hauserman who both served last year’s Board in a different capacity.

Regarding my own election, as my opponent was equally worthy of this position, it was no landslide vote. So

it is important to note that Dwayne Johnson, Palm Beach County, eagerly expressed interest in remaining

involved with the Legislative Committee and was the very first person selected to do so. The next Committee

Member selected was the past Sergeant-At-Arms Joe Petrick, Village of Tequesta, whose guidance has already

been invaluable. Rounding out the committee we also have Linnelle Stewart, City of Alachua, who served on

the committee all of last year, and Steven Hunnicutt, City of Davenport, who ended the year as a valued

committee member, even if he didn’t start the year with them. I only wish that budgetary constraints did not

prevent a larger Legislative Committee. Regardless, I am excited to work with these individuals from around

    the state this year.

Our first committee meeting was held August 13, and discussed how to best serve the Board and the

Membership. For the moment, we are keeping our ears to the ground leading up to the start of the coming

year’s Legislative Session and looking for any sign of Bills and issues which would affect code enforcement

throughout the state. In the meantime, Ryan Matthews, the F.A.C.E Lobbyist, will be probing the possibility

of code enforcement getting on board with efforts to classify 911 Dispatchers as high risk with regards to

retirement benefits. Unfortunately, the very recent line of duty loss of Code Enforcement Officer Jill Robinson

in Utah puts an exclamation point on high risk in our profession. Our hearts go out to her family and

coworkers in their time of grief.

These INTERFACE updates are quarterly, so please feel free to email me at [email protected] with

any questions, concerns or suggestions with regards to the Legislative Committee. Until next time, thank you

all for what you do and stay safe while you do it.

    Hello everyone,

I hope everyone had a great time at the conference. It was so nice seeing

all of you again, and having a chance to see a lot of new faces. I want to

thank everyone for allowing me to serve on the board once again in the

office of Secretary. I want to assure you that I don’t take your confidence

lightly. I am very concerned about you and our organization. I will always

have the best interest of everyone in mind.

I have made sure the minutes from the meetings held at the conference are posted for you to read. Everything

is up to date. Even with my busy schedule at work I have tried to be as punctual as I could be in getting the

minutes correctly transcribed and out for approval by the Board. Please read these to stay “in the know.”

The Board is already working on the next conference. Every conference gets better and better. I am looking

forward to seeing you all again at next year’s conference. I am proud to say that the while serving on the Board

in the different capacities, we are and continue to be very conscientious about spending monies and making

sure we can provide you with the best learning experience we can. We look forward to and appreciate your

input on how we can do better, and what worked well for you.

Again, I want to let you all know that I available to you, and anything I can do to help you, please feel free to

contact me. I will continually do my best to take and keep accurate minutes for you and to live up to the

    VOL. 30, NO. 1 AUGUST 2018

City of Largo Code Enforcement Assists Disabled Citizen By Tracey Schofield, Code Enforcement Manager

On May 10, 2018, members of the City of Largo's Code Enforcement Division discovered a situation with a

disabled citizen who had an ongoing permitting issue concerning the removal and required replacement of trees

on her property. Due to the citizen’s physical and financial situation, she was unable to purchase or plant new

trees so she could come into compliance.

Once Largo’s CEO team found out about the situation, we were able to locate a local nursery who donated the

two nursery grade Magnolia trees and fertilizer. On May 19, seven Code Enforcement employees, Tracey

Schofield, Pete Jensen, Tracy Miller, Chase Bergeron, Dennis Reynolds, Mary Gouge, Kristine Kerepes, and

also Jillian Rose-Schofield from the Pinellas Park Fire Department (and former F. A. C. E. member), came in on

their weekend off and planted the two trees required, and also nine others the homeowner had always wanted

to plant. The Code Enforcement Division also mowed the (foot high) grass, pulled weeds, trimmed bushes and

spread mulch during the project. The homeowner was very grateful for the help provided by the team. The

event was very rewarding for the team members and was a great example of what Code Enforcement units

throughout the state do for their citizens. See pictures below:
