Last weeks “Coyote Howl” was very successful with 25 members participat-ing in the Coulterville parade and festivities. The weekend was iffy as far as weather went, but Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day. Our club do-nated $500.00 to the “May” fundraiser for officers killed or injured in the line of duty. They were thrilled and very appreciative of the contribution. Thanks to all who attended. It was an event worth 10 spoke points. This weekend is our annual “Sierra Memorial Run” worth 20 spoke points. This year’s proceeds will be used for one or two scholarships for Spring Hill High School in the name of the Sierra Shadow Casters M.C. The run will go on, rock slide or no rock slide. If 140 Hwy is closed, we will go out the 120 entrance and down through Greeley Hill to Coulterville and then back to Mariposa. This is about an extra 40 miles going the 120 route, but we will take some rest stops along the way and it should be a real nice ride. Hope to see all the Shadow Casters in attendance for this one. See ya Saturday.

Ride Safe and “ride for others,” Michael, President S.S.C.M.C.

One Howl of a Time in Coulterville

By Paul Hall Sierra Rider’s Rollin’ Reporter

May 20th was a beautiful day for a pa-rade! It was the Sierra Shadow Cast-ers second year of participation in Coulterville’s 21st annual parade and Coyote Howl.

Some 25 SSC’ers arrived in Coulter-ville an hour before we were to rumble down the block-long parade route, we proceeded to the staging area where many Shadow Casters buffed their chrome removing stubborn Hwy 49 bugs and road grime. Of Course, like last year, Bill made no effort to clean his bike before, during or after the pa-

rade. He did eliminate some grime while scribing “wash me” with his finger into his rear fender. I am officially ascrib-ing the nickname “Pigpen” to Bill -- as in the Peanuts character.

Parade time quickly approached and we were rumbling through the historic section of Coulterville (we hid Bill in the middle). While the local spectators seemed sparse they were happy to see us there. Our staggered formation com-mandeered the whole parade route. Revved engines thrilled the kids, young and old – but especially the little guys.

Meanwhile, the ever-popular Coyote Howl festivities were well under way in the County Park. Joyce and Paula, along with her sister Kathleen, each had a booth to sell their wares in the vendor area. The booths served as a sort of home-base throughout the day where SSCers hung out to watch the actual Coyote Howl competition and, of course, retrieve refreshments from Mike’s ice chest.

A FEW FIRSTS This year the SSC sponsored the Coyote Howl (with cash), a first for us. Last year we gave up some loot for the Co. Park stage project assuring our name will be engraved in a few bricks. Our Coyote Howl sponsorship level put us at the top to the T-Shirt along with our logo. Great publicity.

Meanwhile, over at the Magnolia Room, SSC dignitaries carry out another important first. Lauren, the bar maid has been there for the SSC for some time. She has catered to our every need and has treated us with great respect. She may have filled a glass or two with a little more, listened to our stories, made sure our lunch was promptly delivered and has given us every consideration – including hugs upon arrival and departure. Therefore, we made the deci-sion to make Lauren our first “honorary” member. She loves the SSC and was elated by the honor.

The big event of the day, and one of the main reasons the Shadow Casters were in the historic town, was the May Day run, spearheaded by Officer Thomas Wilcoxson of the Modesto PD. The run of 240 riders rolled in to Coul-terville about 2 pm.

Just before the Coyote Howl contest the Prez, flanked by SSC’ers, presented officer Wilcoxson with a check for $500.00. This contribution was unusual in that it marked another first -- an SSC contribution to a cause outside Mariposa. Officer Wilcoxson was very appreciative and thanked the entire SSC membership for their meaningful generosity. SSCers were quick to make friends with their brothers from the May Day run, good folks --most of which were personally invited to the Sierra Memorial Run.

Fifty percent of the proceeds from the May Day run, now in its second year, went to C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) a national organization with a chapter in Modesto; and 50 percent to the Steve May Trust Fund, estab-lished for police cadets who can’t afford academy tuition.

Diana May the wife of Sgt. Steven May, was on hand to offer her appreciation for the SSC contribution. Steve May remains in a vegetative comma after his squad car crashed in pursuit of a suspect in July, 2002. Sgt May’s badge was finally retired in early May 2006. He gave 24 years of service before the accident.

Last year the May Day Run raised $7000.

Back at the Magnolia Room, a blues band offered up some great dance music and the patio party carried on. The day was filled with major fun for all, I for one look forward to next year’s Coyote Howl and Parade… it was one Howl of a time.

The Biker Brunch By Bill Leidenroth

Due to my computer crash, I lost all of the pictures I took as well as the story I had written. Thanks to Paul, who never throws anything in the trash bin, we have coverage of our only feed for the “merry” month of May.

Breakfast Run to the “Southern Clubhouse

May 7th Breakfast run garnered a nice size turn out. Some 13 riders met at the 19th Hole and made their way to Ducey’s at Bass lake. Unfortunately, the lake-front restaurant was packed, creating an hour-long wait. Hungry, and unwilling to wait in a warm parking lot, we shifted gears and rode to the ever-popular Buck Horn Saloon in North Fork. Once there, we were able to order up a hearty breakfast right-away. After stuffing our mugs Bill headed for home (as usual) and the rest of us headed off to Sheri’s Road House for a few cool refreshments. While at Sheri’s we made use of the time to hand out a few dozen fliers to prospect Sierra Memorial Run participants. (we’ve had a lot of posi-tive feed back, have you been handing yours out?) Several of us decided that our next stop would be the Dixion’s place in Friant. Some went home from Sheri’s. Their home is spacious (to say the least) and has a great view. After a quick stop at the mini-mart for extra refreshments, off we went. On the way a small (and unusual) mishap as Johnny lost his helmet (off his sissy bar) which he forgot to put on af-ter leaving the mini-mart. Rex and I were following Johnny and Rod back to Rod’s place and when we stopped to pick up the helmet they kept right on going! Johnny didn’t realize his helmet was not on his head much less bouncing off the pavement. He also didn’t notice that we pulled over. This left us, well, lost not knowing how to get to Rod’s place. After milling about on the road for awhile Mike finally came back for us leading us to the rest of gang. Way to go Prez! Once we finally made it to the Dixon’s place we enjoyed several large bowls of chips and dip and a great bull ses-sion. Carolyn gave us the grand tour of her and Rod’s amazing home. A few of us went for a dip in the pool while other s hung out on the miles of decks and helped break in Rod’s new bar. After a few brewskis and watching the sun set on a perfect day Mike announced, actually proclaimed, the Dixon’s place as the SSC’s “Southern Club House” -- Never mind there is no North, East or Western club house. The Bevingtons (both sets) were the first to leave the 3 hour party and head to Chuck & Nancy’s for a chance at a big win. Following them, Mike and Joyce and Paula and Me stopped in the casino for a delicious dinner. The Dixon’s have extended and invitation to SSCer’s in the near future for a club-wide get-together. Details will be announced.

Rider of the Month

Featured Rider: Rod Dixon I’m Rod Dixon and my wife Carolyn and I joined the SSC’rs in June of 05. We’d only been married about a year and a half and were looking for a motorcycle club like SSC, and fortunately you found us in Raymond. My life is simple, some might even say predictable, about the only thing that can adversely effect it, is the weather. I’m an Electrical Lineman/Sub-Foreman with PG&E and it’s a career I’ve enjoyed for more than twenty eight years. I’m central California born and raised in Selma where I first began my love for riding bikes. As a young kid in grammar school while other kids my age were riding horses, which I did some, but found them to be too unpredictable. I started riding a Kawasaki 175cc through the fields and orchards and quickly moved up to a Maaco 250cc. However, my first road bike was a Honda 500 and I rode that well into my early 20's. Being a predictable kind of guy, I married my High School Sweetheart immediately after graduation and began working at PG&E. She being predictable, immediately after marriage blessed me with our first child, a son, we named him Jeremy now I had a riding buddy! For fifteen years Jeremy and I enjoyed riding our Kawasaki 250cc three wheeler and the best of times were spent riding the dunes at Pismo Beach. Like most bikers, if you ride along enough you start going for more power and so did I. My next bike was a 2-stroke, Liquid cooled, Suzuki 500cc Quad. Wow, what a machine, I was hooked, I vowed then that I would always have a bike in my life. My love affair with the motorcycle remains to this day, but sadly enough my wife of 25 years, my High School Sweetheart, she passed away. Nothing spells recovery like a new motorcycle and I bought a Yamaha V-Star. I really liked that bike and I rode it for about two years. But in 2003 Harley Davidson came out with the anniversary edition and I just had to get a Road King with all of the bells and whistles. And that’s been nearly three years ago. Some say if you want to get the attention of the Ladies, get yourself a Harley. Well, my Lady fell for me before she saw my Harley, but she’s been my “Bump On The Back” ever since.
