Summer 2010
It has been a crazy busy summer thus far at AFGC. All of our range ex-pansions are under way! Everything should be wrapped up by the middle of September. Our growth at the club has been outstanding! We are growing leaps and bounds. Breaking every membership record the club has ever seen.
July 10th we hosted our annual AFGC open house. What an awesome suc-cess! We had over 200 guests visit us that day! The weather was on our side and everything went exactly as planned. Our main event, “FISHING” went without a hitch. Lorne and Ross did an outstanding job! If you missed it, we had huge fish this year! Largest fish that was caught was 6+ pounds! It was awesome to see the huge smiles on the faces of children as they caught their first fish. I can still hear Lorne yelling, FISH ON!!!! That was awesome.
Archery had a huge success! Shawn Lowney, Wayne Ouellette, and Jared Less did an awesome job educating both the young and old the art of arch-ery and bow hunting. Shawn said they never stopped all day! The gun range was an absolute 110% success! Thanks to Ron Edward, Ian Baird and Marco. You guys did an awesome job! As I walked through the range while guns were blazing, the expressions on all the faces said it all. Kids of all ages, shooting all types of firearms was a sight to see.
Thank you to everyone who helped in anyway way shape or form to make this event the success it was. Next year will be even better yet! Stay tuned for updates as the come.
I want to take this time to wish each and every member a safe and relax-ing summer. Remember to take a kid fishing and pass on the heritage we’ve all grown to love.
Cheers,
Mark Porter AFGC President

Well ....the Spring Bear season is over and we’ve now received our LEH results and can
start planning our fall hunts! For those of you who were lucky enough to get a draw or two
congratulations and for those who don’t have a draw don’t worry and BC has an abundance
of OTC tags and hunting opportunities. Now it is time to spend those summer months
practicing up with the gun and bow and getting back into mountain shapeJ
The QCI deer season is already open and sheep season opens August 1st for those who
love the mountains. The remainder of the Big Game species get going between Aug.15th
and Sept. 1st ......good luck with your hunting this fall and please send me your pic-
tures/stories of your Spring and Fall hunts this year so we can include them in the next
instalment of the newsletter. And don’t forget to give me a call when you get back from
your hunts and let me know what you managed to bag and also to get me to score your
animals.
Happy hunting. Ian Baird – Big Game AFGC
BIG GAME HUNTING
FISHING REPORT
The Fraser River opens to retain springs on July 16 (springs 77 cm and over must be released) Wide open the end of
Aug. Too early yet but we may have some sockeye fishing as this is the year of the Adams, and usually it is a large run.
The saltwater fishing has been good lately, I was over to Van. Island three weeks ago and we got all our springs to 24
lbs. plus four halibut.
I was not able to do much fishing due to my injured shoulder but had a good outing. I know of two other club member s
who are going ocean fishing, I hope to hear reports from them and pictures. The ferries have gone way up, truck and 17
foot boat plus 3 guys = $175.00 + depends on which day you go.
Our open house was a smashing success with about 75 children fishing in the
pond. Many of the children had to wait for a fishing rod in order to fish.
Loren and I were kept busy baiting hooks, untangling lines, and landing fish.
A lot of fish were caught, a 6 pounder was the largest.
Next years event will be larger , bigger pool, more fish and more help to man the
fishing area. WE will keep you updated on what we have planned.
The club bought all the prizes this year, but a special thanks to Kurt Krack for his
cut , wrapped and frozen Deer donation, and for all your help around the pond.
Wishing everyone a great summer fishing, and please play it safe on the water.
Ross Gordon Fishing chairman
August Update: Fraser River opened August 9th, the Adams is running true to form
and the numbers for sockeye are up!
Loren Sherbina was fishing on the Fraser, August 12th, and caught his first of the
season 26 pound Red Chinook!!
Most of the sockeye being caught are in the range of 5—7 pounds !

Saturday, July 10th AFGClub Open
What a smashing success!! The day was sunny and hot and at least 200
people showed up to enjoy the opportunities of trying different activities; from pistols, rifles, trap shooting to fishing for trout! The Grand Prize of:
‘One Deer—cut, wrapped and frozen’ was donated by Kurt Krack, Thank You Kurt for the generous donation. There were other donations provided
by Dart and Tackle, Reaction Fly and Tackle, Hub Sports and Fred Helmer’s. Thanks to everyone for supporting this educational and enjoyable day.
Go Fish BC provided the pond and trout that went into it; Thanks again, to Dusty
Waite and Lucy (his dog) for coming and setting up the pond and getting the fish
safely into the water. Volunteer’s—Ross Gordon and Loren Sherbina worked closely
with Dusty to help ensure that everything was ready to go.
This wonderful day would not have been so wonderful had it not been for all
the tremendous hard work of the volunteers……………..
THANK YOU—AFGC COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!

Operation Managers Report Well the summer has been very busy at AFGC—if you have been out to the range
you will notice a number of changes that have happened already- with archery
moving to the parking lot grass area and the grassy area on the range being dug
up and cement has been poured for the new shooting sheds and for the footings
that the walls will stand on. Check the webpage daily for up to date information
regarding range closures.
We are finding that a lot of our members and guests are not cleaning up the range
after they shoot- ALL CASINGS (BRASS or STEEL) must be picked up and put in
the appropriate containers or taken home with you and all garbage placed in the
garbage bins. This is becoming an epidemic situation and will not be tolerated.
We all should show pride in our range by cleaning up after ourselves.
Have a safe relaxing summer and get involved with one of our subclubs come fall.
Dave and Linda Dunn
Don’t be ‘bearly’
conscious of what’s around you, stay alert to
enjoy your surrounds where-ever you may
travel this summer!!
NOTE OF INTEREST:
Between 7—11 million
sockeye expected to re-turn to the Fraser River
this year. 1.6 million are projected for the early
run with summer run
and late run projections being out in the next
week or so.
