GVVCVC Journal June 2013. Page 3

If you have not received your renewal pack contact editor Alvin to request a replacement pack. Email [email protected] or phone 85292504.

Renewals may be deposited in the box provided at club meetings or posted in the envelope provided (please put a postage stamp on the envelope if posting).

The Renewal Form clearly identifies if any of your vehicles are to be inspected by a Registrar.

Errata: The Renewal form requests that you provide your log book number. This is not necessary, but by writing “yes” in the GVVCVC Log Book Column against vehicles for which you have log books helps in maintaining the integrity of club records.

Registration Validation A reminder that a Statutory Declaration (provided in your renewal pack) will need to be completed for all vehicles registered through the Gawler Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club.

Log Book Validation will occur on Tuesday 18th June 6pm to 7pm prior to the June Meeting.

Note:No vehicle inspections will be carried out in this session. .

Registrar Allan Kempster validating log

books at the May meeting

Vehicle inspections and Log Book validation will occur on Saturday 22nd June 10am to 2pm at the Gawler Recreation Centre, and Sunday 23rd June 10am to 12noon at David and Pam Moule’s residence, 23 Seaview Road, Yatala Vale.(Note that this address was incorrect in the April edition of the Journal)

A Justice of the Peace will be available in each instance to witness statutory declarations.

The following are essential for validation inspections and log book sign off: • Log Book • Vehicle Registration Certificate • Proof of payment of renewal fees (The treasurer will be available to verify) • Statutory Declaration

If you are unable to attend at the nominated times you will need to make arrangements with one of the registrars (contact numbers inside front cover of the Journal) for inspection and Log Book sign off.

WARNING: 1. If your Log Book is not validated by 30th June, your vehicle is technically not registered with

consequent impacts on insurance and traffic offence penalties should the untoward occur. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE AFTER 30TH JUNE IF YOUR LOG BOOK HAS NOT BEEN VALIDATED.

2. If you have not renewed your membership by 30th July, your membership will cease. If you wish to return to membership after this date you will have to meet new membership requirements including attendance at 3 functions and payment of the membership joining fee.

3. If you have vehicles on conditional registration with the GVVCVC and you do not renew membership, the Registrars are required to advise Motor Vehicle Registration by 30 August. Motor Registration may then take steps to cancel your registration.

The Web Site Have you looked at the club web site recently? www.gawlercarclub.com. A new page has been created featuring the swap meet. You will find the link on the RHS of the home page just under the sponsor’s acknowledgement.

It is interesting to read the comments left on the site. There was one left for the April Journal which featured Anthony Argall’s VW restoration which reads

John Argall says: April 13, 2013 at 12:00 pm “My brother, Anthony, has spent years getting this VW restored. He chased all around to get genuine parts. He was fussy to get the paintwork correct, in fact he probably did a better job than the original. Congratulations”

Run Reports Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting and is on the web site at http://gawlercarclub.com/pdfs/run_report_template.pdf . Reports should include some statistics on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by the Editor and the Webmaster.

Crabbing Run to Port Parham March 26th Anne Williams Despite inclement weather forecast there was still a good turnout with twenty one folk braving the elements with seven classic cars plus several moderns.

Had little rain on and off but quite windy so therefore hard to see crabs in water. Ten guys and one brave gal waded out with tubs, rakes etc. Several of us women stayed behind to mind Sylvia and Misty the puppy plus a couple of guys to keep eye on rest of us wee gals (as if we would miss behave).

Around forty crabs came back to be cooked and devoured. Apparently many more than that had to be thrown back ready for next year. We hope.

During lunch a blonde "rocker" arrived, then a little later on his brown haired almost identical twin brother made an appearance. Made for good conversation though. It seems that these blokes had previously received a warning from Fisheries about undersize crabs, and did not want to be recognised!

Bob Collins paid a quick visit but had to whiz off to keep his eye on the receding tide in the hope of recovering his drowned tractor which was bogged the day before in water up to top of exhaust pipe.

Great to see Mike, Mary and Molly Osborne over from Ardrossan. Molly had a couple of playmates in Sandy Kempster and Misty Jenkin.

As always Alvin and Sylvia did a marvellous job of organising everything for the day. We appreciate their valuable time and effort, so a big thank you from all who attended.

Turned out to be an enjoyable day for sure.

Another Mystery Run “Via the Villages” 17/4/13 Trevor Bellchambers.

Add the word ‘mystery’ to one of our Club Runs and it leads to curiosity, intrigue and a sense of adventure. My sincere thanks to the 35 keen motoring adventurers who assembled at the car park where instructions and maps were distributed. By the map it was simply follow the pink road.

The first village we passed through was Sandy Creek, then Rowland Flat and on through Bethany, turn right at Vine Vale and follow on to the STOP sign next to Vintners. From here there was a choice on the map to either take the pink road through Angaston , on to Moculta and some unsealed road to Truro or take the green sealed road to Truro. Most followed the pink road to Moculta, a rarely visited Barossa village with a sharp turn left into the village. David Moule and party were obviously chatting, missed that turn and headed east through the range and found himself near Sedan.. oops! He belatedly caught up with the group and said that he had followed a great 4x4 scenic drive, not really Mercedes Coupe country.

The first section of unsealed road out of Moculta was rather rough. Bruce and Anne’s little red rocket has hard sports suspension and I think their teeth are still chattering (and the car has been sold!). Our morning tea destination was the Truro Sunshine Bakery with lots of decadent buns, slices, etc. and good coffee. We spent a leisurely hour plus here then headed off on the next leg of our adventure. The road from a little west of Truro to Kapunda is a motoring joy with hills, valleys, long sweeping bends through scenic countryside.

GVVCVC Journal June 2013. Page 10

At historic Kapunda there was a ‘stop and explore’ choice or drive on to Freeling. At Freeling our lunch location was the Gungellan Hotel (McLeods’ Daughters fame). The lunch and leisure time there was appreciated by all. A few extra Members joined us during the Run and we appreciated their participation and company.

I greatly enjoy the sense of adventure that Mystery Runs give and you are all invited to my next one.... Soon!

Club Run to the Aviation Museum at Greenock Sunday 31st March Corrie and Kaye Wake Left Tafe travelling along Lyndoch Road and the cars all automatically stopped at the Lyndoch Bakery for morning tea.

Onwards through the scenic countryside, and despite some dodgy directions every one arrived at the planned destination. We sat down to a bar-b-q lunch with lots of delicious salads.

The person driving the fastest car arrived last…..Why Trevor? Luckily there was plenty to eat so they didn’t miss out.

After lunch we looked around the museum and were amazed at the large number of different model planes. It was very interesting.

Later a Commer truck was started up-known as a Commer “Knocker” – a three cylinder motor with six pistons. Apparently in England the cost or registration was based on the number of cylinders a vehicle had. This truck was designed to be more economical to register with only three cylinders. (Editors Note: these were a 2 stroke diesel with a supercharger, and just like a Zeta, the motors can run backwards (but not by design!)) There was a small shop selling locally made products. The mustard pickle we bought turned out to be very tasty. The museum was well set out and well worth a visit.

Club Run to Mallala and Port Parham Sunday 28th April Corrie and Kay Wake Everyone met at Tafe for a 9:30am start to the Malalla Museum with the Maitland Car Club MAPS. There was a good selection of cars with no two cars the same. Morning tea was in the hall across the road from the museum. It was an amazing spread of cakes, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream. After a scrumptious morning tea we went to the museum. The museum was very interesting and well set out. There were some of Alvin’s old relics there. There was an old classroom from a country school that Trevor Bellchambers taught at (and Alvin was taught in), which brought back old school memories. A lot of war photos brought home the many sacrifices of war. It was an amazing step back in time with clothes, crockery, furniture and all sorts of household goods from the past.Stepping back into the present everyone headed to Port Parham for lunch. The food was tasty and freshly cooked with plenty of salads and a delicious desert. Alvin gave us all an interesting history lesson about Port Parham. The weather was perfect making it a great day out.

Copper Coast Classic Cavalcade Sunday 26th May by Roving Reporter

For some of the early starters who were down for the weekend the day started at 0630, with a fine sea mist coming in off the sea they left from the caravan parks and accommodation to go to the assembly point. Considering there were other motoring events taking place that weekend there was the usual good turnout with the final count about six hundred cars in the cavalcade,

The early morning breakfast and refreshment was well received, and the only hazard at that point was ensuring the runny fried egg didn’t land on your shirt.

By 10.00am everybody was ready to move off, but there was a slight delay as the regular lead vehicle (1927 Chrysler) was not in position .“Oh dear where is Trevor?” Finally the Cavalcade left, using a slightly different route from last year, but taking in the same Towns, Wallaroo, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes, Moonta, North Yelta, and finally Kadina.

The weather was perfect for the cars and as usual there was a great and enthusiastic turnout of spectators, especially in Moonta High Street where they really appreciate our cars travelling long distances to participate.

There was a good turn out from the Gawler Club, Dave and Jean Beeching took up two cars - Jean driving her Austin A55 on its maiden run and obviously taking no chance that hubby would break down in the the Vauxhall. They left the breakdowns to Sue and Steve Purnell who only had a very minor mishap when a pin dropped out of the fuel pump in their Holden (fortunately the RAA were on hand to assist and get them back on the run). But more noteworthy was Ted Povey’s fall from grace (literally) as he became inclined to a sinking feeling in the Austin 1800 –it was no longer “floating on fluid” but developed a noticeable list to starboard, somewhat deflated Ted returned home in a depressed manner (some people will do anything to stop David Beeching taking the hard luck trophy!).

The remainder of us completed the run and caught up with one another at the oval and enjoyed the entertainment and food, the only disappointment was they ran out of Cornish Pasties and Farmers Union Ice Coffee very early - “Yours truly got the last carton” but we were in very early!

“CONGRATULATIONS” goes to Geoff Francis who took out two prizes for his Holden EH Ute, Best in Class and Best Restoration Project. It would have made his day which was a good and well organised event and well worth the entry fee.

EYES & EARS by Dabtoe • “Commiserations” must go to Glenys having to put up with Moaning Martin all day around the

house; I hear she is looking for a job (The story so far: Martin was up a ladder and decided to step onto a wheely bin which moved, dumping Martin on the ground and breaking his ankle. He denies that he was checking out the sunbathing neighbour!)

• Rumour has it that that our intrepid Vauxhall owner very early on Sunday morning and only a few kms from home, enroute to the Copper Coast Classic, got lost in Angle Vale and could not find the Port Wakefield Road, luckily an early morning walker went home and got his car and took our lost soul to where he wanted to go, (he could not blame Jean as she was following in the Austin A55 behind)

• Travelling on route to Wallaroo, who was driving the Mustang? When leaving the bakery at Port Wakefield, our driver decided to follow behind a B/Double? After a short while his passenger remarked “WHY ARE WE GOING TO Port Augusta” cannot blame you this time Shirl the signs were on his side of the road

• Early Sunday morning driving through Wallaroo in a fine early sea mist the driver of the Sunbeam Talbot and followed closely by the Mustang took a wrong turn and found themselves nearly stranded in the sand dunes and scrub, the Talbot driver who shall remain nameless claims his Port lookout was still asleep.

• After an excellent night out and evening meal one of our club members, resolutely tried to navigate back to their accommodation. Being in a strange and unfamiliar area, plus being in a dark and unlit area he was soon totally lost. His navigator (“I won’t use the Jowett, I’ll use the Mustang”) was also lost and thus of no help whatsoever. But not to be concerned - the two female lookouts in the back seat suddenly shouted, “Turn right and first left,” luckily the car brakes work well as the ENTRANCE to the council refuse dump loomed ahead. Fortunately the gates were closed or all may have ended up in a big hole waiting just beyond.

(Editors note: sounds like plenty of Swanky was consumed even before leaving the southern cities!)

Our 1963 Dodge Phoenix Trevor & Lyn Bellchambers

One of a matching pair bought by a Mr. Hall of Nuriootpa in 1963. They were the same colour grey with white side flashes. One had a deep red interior and that was his ‘church car’, polished during the week and driven on Sundays. The other car had a tan interior and that became his ‘every day car.’

After Mr. Hall’s death the two cars were covered and stored in a shed at his son’s place (Lou Hall) on the outskirts of Gawler where I found them. Lou would not separate them so I had to buy both. The ‘church car’ (our current car) was a very low mileage car but the paint work was thin in places from polishing. The ‘every day car’ (I wish I still had) had a replaced passenger side door that the old gent had hand painted.

There was a truck load of spares that had been gathered over the years and offered to me but sadly I could not afford them.

I repainted the ‘every day car’ white and when my father, Ray Bellchambers joined our Club I let him have it and it went on many Runs. A couple of years later Dad said, “I like your grey car better, would you swap?” I agreed on the condition that the car came back to me when he had finished with it. Technically, I suppose I am the 2nd and the 4th owner of this car.

The white car was eventually sold (idiot!) to Jack the Jeweller from Renmark where it is still. While Dad had the car he had many people wanting to buy it so I had to remind him a few times of our agreement. When Dad eventually felt unsafe driving the Dodge I got it back. The paint was well worn as Dad was a polisher too!

I stripped the body, had it professionally painted in a slightly darker grey with white side flashes and I feel that the colour scheme really suits that car. Recently, thin white walls were added to the tyres to enhance to look of the car. It has only travelled 82,000 miles so I am sure it is a car to be enjoyed for many years to come. (editors foot note: Lou Hall was a neighbour of ours when we lived in Hillier and he had great sheds which held various Packards, T Model Fords and V8 Holdens. His facilities proved most useful in the construction of the “Jenkin Jinker” which features on the Club crabbing days.)

Cars sought for photographing Gavin Farmer has addressed club meetings on a number of occasions in relation to the books that he has written and published, including those on the Leyland P76, Valiant Charger, the History of Chrysler in Australia, Holden Monaro etc (go to http://www.ilingabooks.com.au/ for all the info on these). Gavin is looking to photograph cars for future publications, and is seeking out suitable candidates. My First Car by Fred Chapman My first car was a 1924 Austin 7.It consisted of a chassis, with a set of cut down wheels 16” Dia with wire spokes. This made it look real sporty. I was 14 yrs old at the time in 1959.

I heard about a fellow who had been building an Austin 7 Special & had bought an MG TC instead. My brother John took me on the pillion of his 350 Jawa to have a look at the Austin. We didn`t tell Mum & Dad where we were going because we figured that they would only tell us not to buy it & then we would have been stumped. I had been working for the local Grocer Mr Jenkins, stacking shelves & keeping the store room tidy, which included setting & emptying the Rat & Mice traps regularly & letting Mr Jenkins know whenever I should happen to see a brown snake hiding in the shelves or cupboards. They used to creep in looking for mice but it was only occasionally. Anyway Mrs Jenkins didn`t like them & she refused to go into the storage room. I capitalised on her dislike for these reptiles by reporting that I had seen one frequently & exagerating my estimate of their size. This at least ensured that I had a pretty good chance of keeping my part time job. I also had another part time job at the Feed Mill where I would take my Daisy air rifle & shoot Mice, Rats & Pigeons who would steal the Grain & Fodder. My other part time employment activities included Fruit & Grape picking when in season or getting in the way in the shearing shed or helping to sow bags of grain. All this activity had enabled me to save up a few pounds & I had heard that the fellow was not asking a lot for the Austin.

We set off on my Brother`s Jawa full of anticipation. I was expecting to find an almost complete little special with a polished aluminium body in the shape of an Ulster racing Special. When we did see the vehicle it consisted of a completely bare chassis with four wheels. The only components assembled to the chassis were the front & rear axles with the wheels attached. In about 5 Orange (Fruit) Boxes there was a collection of engine, gearbox, steering & brake systems all dismantled into the absolutely smallest components possible. As well as this there were 4 Aluminium Cycle guards an aluminium dashboard with a hole in it for a speedo & a cylindrical aluminium Fuel Tank.

Somewhat taken aback I said to the fellow whose Name I recall was Laurie Hart, “ I thought that you were selling an Austin 7 sports”. “It is he replied , it just isn`t quite finished yet”. “Anyway he continued how old are you?”. “14” I replied. “Well”, said Laurie “ you have 2 years yet to put it all together before you can get a licence anyway, how lucky are you, I didn`t get my first car until I was 17 & therefore had to wait a year after getting my licence before I had anything to drive”. I thought for a moment & then thought perhaps he is right I am lucky aren’t I.

Not Fred’s, but its got to be close!

My brother asked Laurie if we could be sure that all the parts were there to put the thing together. Laurie assured us that they were & then went & brought back from another shed a large Rubber Bulb Horn. He said that because there were no electrics on the car ( It was Magneto Ignition ), I would need this horn which he graciously offered to give to me at no extra cost. The horn apparently was off an old 1908 Oldsmobile. After some more bartering I paid a deposit & arranged to be back in a couple of weeks after I had earned enough cash Apricot picking during school holidays.

We returned home, keeping the Austin 7 a secret for now. A couple of weeks later I had been picking Apricots & saved enough cash to pay for the car I was wondering how I could get the car home . Mr Lee, for whom I had been picking provided me with the solution. He offered to bring the car home for me if I went with him in his truck to the Produce Market & help him unload his delivery of Apricots. I was pleased with this arrangement but spent the next two days hoping that Mum or Dad did not bump into Mr Lee or his wife until we had brought the car home. I knew that once the car was home & in our shed my dad wouldn`t be able to tell me to take it back.

I was almost wrong in this assumption. When dad came home he saw the chassis & boxes of parts etc & asked Mum where they had come from. She had not been home when Mr Lee dropped them off for me so they both assumed that my brother John must have got them. John is eight years older than me ( there is almost a whole war between our birth dates due to Dad’s absence from home at that time ) so he would have been about 18 yrs old & therefore it wasn`t unreasonable for them to assume that the stuff was his. During Tea, however, the question was raised. Dad asked John what he had bought & he said “Oh, that must be Fred`s”. When Dad asked me about it I explained that I had been helping Mr Lee fruit picking & delivering to the Produce Market & therefore with what was owing to me I had managed to pay for the car & get it delivered home. Dad said that he was pleased to see me working to get something that I wanted but Mr Lee had been far too generous & he would have to see him & reimburse him for some of the cost. I was terrified that Mum & Dad would find out the real cost & hurried to tell Dad that because he did not know Mr Lee as well as I, he may not realise that this may offend him. This managed to quieten everything down & after Tea Dad went out into the shed with me to look at my prize.

It did not take Dad too long to decide that what I had got was far from complete & he felt relieved that Mr Lee had not wasted any money helping me. Fortunately neither Mum or Dad ever did learn the real cost of my first car. The car, however, turned out to be one of the best purchases I was ever to make. My Father & I spent a lot of time together in the shed & from him I learned so many valuable lessons about all things mechanical. My father was the best teacher I ever have met or in fact I am sure ever will meet. He would spend some time explaining the purpose & function of each component firstly & then demonstrate how they should fit together. He would then leave me to assemble the component & after a day or so join me in the shed again & go over what I had done. If I had done well & achieved what he had set me to do he would congratulate me & show me the next step to follow. If I had not managed to finish the task he would help me pull it all apart again & show me where the mistake had been made without making a big deal of it. He would then leave me to have another go. Dad would never step in & take over as so many other dads do he would only help when I asked for help. Most importantly, he always used to explain the various functions of each component while referring to the principles of Physics & motion. It is a fact that whenever you come across an almost insurmountable problem that you need to break the problem down to the most basic rules of physics & then analyse the problem step by step. If I ever have any problem at all I always think back to what my dad would have said & what he would have done & it always seems to help me out. Dad was a really amazing fellow when you understand that he started work at the age of 12 driving Pit Ponies in the Yorkshire Coal Mines & Never had any formal training . When the coal mines closed down & he was out of work he came to Lancashire & had a job sweeping factory floors. His interest in the machinery prompted one of the foremen to give him a turn operating a lathe & he eventually moved through from becoming a machine setter to Foreman, Tool Room Superintendant & eventually was sent over to Australia in 1947 to set up the first Wheel Production Factory for Rubery Owen at Finsbury in the old Munition Factory.

Any way this story is about my first car. By the time I was about 15 ½ with the help of dad & my brother I had the vehicle all assembled & ready to drive. The first one of to drive the vehicle was my brother. This was because he was already able to drive our car, a little Morris 8/40 & he could handle the clutch, gears & push starting. After a quick push start the little mobile chassis took off down the hill on our Orchard at Strahalbyn & John roared around the Almond block. There was no floor in the chassis, just a sheet of Plywood on the drivers side & you could sit in the drivers seat & look straight through to the ground on the Passengers side. There was no body but just a tubular steel frame work that Dad had helped me to build to fix a body to. Even the transmission shaft cover was just a framework & when driving the tail shaft was only inches away from your left leg totally exposed & spinning rapidly. The cycle guards were to be fitted after the body had been fitted & therefore the only other item visible was the Cylindrical Fuel Tank which was mounted just behind the drivers Seat, ( the only seat the vehicle had ).

As I have already said, the vehicle had no electrics other than the Magneto for ignition & therefore to get petrol from the fuel Tank at the rear I had come up with an ingenious solution. I placed a tyre valve into the air breather on the tank & connected it via a short piece of plastic tubing to a copper pipe running from the rear of the vehicle to a bicycle pump mounted on the Dashboard. This allowed me to pressurise the tank & therefore push fuel along another Copper pipe feeding from the bottom of the tank up to the Float bowl of the Carburettor . I spent the next six months tidying up various little bits & pieces & of course driving the vehicle around our property as often as I could. I found that the car would run for some considerable time with only a few pumps to pressurise the Tank. This was easier to achieve if there was plenty in the tank & therefore less air space to compress. I also became quite proficient at pushing the little car along to running speed & then jumping in, crunching into second gear & dropping the clutch. Even though I was not a very big lad I was still quite able to start the vehicle this way.

There were many interesting & funny stories about my experiences with this little vehicle but there is only enough room for a couple. When I turned 16 I obtained my licence ( only a ten question form to fill out ) & began driving the car around Strathalbyn. It may be hard for anyone to understand ( particularly our younger generation ) but it was extremely easy to register anything then. I never got around to manufacturing a body for the vehicle because I was having too much fun driving it.

I did, however, paint the space frame & Petrol Tank black & I polished the aluminium dashboard which I thought looked great. My satisfaction turned to annoyance, however, when I was travelling with the sun behind me & I was blinded by the mirror like dashboard reflecting back into my face. I quickly painted the dashboard black as well.

At one stage I found a tin of Red enamel Paint in Dads shed & asked him if I could use some to paint the Cycle guards that I had decided to fix to the vehicle. Dad said that there wasn`t much left in the tin but I was welcome to use it if I wished. I decided that it would be easier to paint the guards before I fitted them because I could turn them upside

down to paint the underside. One night after returning home from work as an Apprentice Toolmaker I painted the 4 guards on the underside & placed them aside to dry. The next day when I came home I checked the guards & found them quite dry. I was thrilled at the bright red colour & could hardly wait to see them on the car. I carefully applied the Red Paint to the topside of the first Guard & then wondered where I could put it while it dried. I decided to lay the guard onto the tyre to dry. I completed all 4 guards & placed them carefully onto each wheel to dry. As I packed up & put the paint & brush away I checked to see how the first one I had painted was drying. To my dismay I found a host of little bugs committing suicide by landing on the sticky paint & adhearing themselves to the guard. It was a balmy summer evening & the little bugs were flocking in droves to land on my fresh paint & turning the bright Red Shiny Guards into what appeared to be four furry giant sized caterpillars clinging to the wheels. In panic I rushed to the back of my vehicle & began pushing it into the shed. The wheels began turning & all four of the Guards followed around with them & were crushed on our gravel driveway. Needless to say the vehicle never did get its Guards either.

One other event that is worth mentioning happened when I had been visiting a mate of mine in Adelaide . I was heading home & travelling up a road that happened to be a bus route. I noticed that there were a few people up ahead waiting for the bus & among them there were two young Ladies. As is even the case today it is not uncommon for young fellows to do stupid things with their vehicles in the hope that they may somehow impress certain members of the opposite sex. Well at this time I was no different & so I accelerated up in second gear (the Austin 7 only had one more gear) & I gauged my rate of travel to require a nifty change into top when I would be right at the bus stop. All went well & I executed the most remarkable change into top when suddenly the rear wheels locked up & I was jolted forward into an ingracious embrace with steering wheel & the vehicle came to a dead stop about 20ft past the Bus stop. I climbed out of the vehicle which was stuck in the middle of the traffic lane & saw the two young ladies climbing onto the bus giggling. A passer by came over a helped me pick up the rear of my car & wheel it like a Wheel Barrow to the side of the road. I had no idea what had happened & was trying to think of what it could be perhaps the gearbox locked up or maybe the diff ceased I thought. The passer by pointed to my driveshaft & asked if it should look like that. When I looked I could see that there was a large wad of material wrapped around the shaft. What had happened was that the cushion I had been sitting on had got caught in the exposed universal joint & been whipped from under my bum & wound around the shaft until it jammed. I was carrying a penknife & I hastily cut the cushion free & left the scene as quickly as I could. Once we all carried a pocket knife without any thought of using it for anything other than what would be considered legal. However, what a shame it is that in circumstances today you could find yourself in trouble if caught carrying one.

I drove the Austin 7 regularly to work until winter came & then I became tired of having to wear cycle clips on my legs to stop the cold air from rushing straight up my trouser legs & blowing my cap off. It seemed to be time to find another vehicle with a roof & windscreen to provide a little more comfort. That is when I saw an advert for a Mod 621 Graham Paige for sale at George Thomson Motors. This came to be my second car.

Well as I have said there are still many great stories about this remarkable little car that I could list but this article is becoming a little too long.
