Introducing OPL’s Plan 2020

A s we embark on a new journey together at the Oxford Public Library we look to our recently

adopted Strategic Initiatives and Objectives Plan 2020 for guidance and encouragement along the way. Our new strategic plan focuses on technology, education, empowerment and innovation. Reflecting on our core values and principles—both our mission and our vision statements have stood the test of time. OPL will continue to provide access to the world, enrich the community and promote lifelong learning and enjoyment. Our mission, along with our vision of transforming tomorrow, preserving the past and enriching lives today, will remain the core foundation in building the new roadmap used to maintain OPL’s presence in advancing forward our community’s prosperity and quality of life.

Today, libraries are much more than brick and mortar housings of books used primarily for recreational purposes. Providing unlimited access to robust databases such as Rosetta Stone ® Library Solutions, NoveList Plus®, Consumer Reports®, and to Overdrive® downloadable eLibrary are just a few examples of the value added return on investment we benefit from in return for a rather minimal tax contribution spent to support ongoing library services in Oxford. Additionally, OPL’s state of the art Early Learning Resource Center, Special Needs Collection, and Parent/Teacher Educational

Tools are just a few other invaluable resources made available through our Youth Services Department. Our Teen patrons are provided endless opportunity to learn and grow too. With access to a specialized, age-appropriate collection of print materials, trained teen librarians and to special programs centered on learning, teambuilding and friendship development—opportunities are truly endless. At OPL we are so much more than books—we are access to the world, to lifelong learning and to enjoyment. We pledge to our taxpayers to responsibly and strategically continue unfolding our largest investments to date in both our infrastructure and in technology. Since 2014 OPL has invested nearly three-quarters of a million dollars in educational initiatives related to advancements in both digital and educational resources, coupled with capital improvements made to the library’s infrastructure and physical plant (library building and grounds). This has created an environment more conducive to learning and serving the safety and well-being of its nearly three hundred thousand visitors each year.

The future of OPL is outlined in more detail in its Plan 2020. The plan in its entirety is included inside this issue of your OPL newsletter. For questions please feel free to reach out to me at 248.628.3034.

From the Friends... The Friends of OPL raise funds to help support library programs, activities and special projects. Thanks to community support of recent fundraisers, the Friends were able to donate $6,714 to the Library for programing and some other initiatives so far this year. Thanks to everyone who have donated books to the Library. After Library staff removes any books the Library can use, the Friends sort through them weekly and organize them for the next sale.

Haven’t joined yet? The OPL Friends welcome new members. If you have time to volunteer, great, if not they welcome your financial support too. Ask someone at the information desk for an application or go online http://www.miopl.org/index.php/about/friends-of-the-library.
