at Kyamk. Next week there‘s the Oscar Gala
organised by the business students, and the
Design Market is the traditional Christmas
event at Kyamk. In the next week‘s issue
you‘ll be able to read all about the Design
Market, the organisers and what it‘s all about.
If you‘re up for some sweet stuff, thinking long
fully of the summers past, do try out Anna‘s
muffin recipe and toss yourself into memories
of the sun on your skin and warm grass be-
neath your feet.
Till next time, enjoy the last sparks of the
orange an red hues of autumn and bundle
up, winter‘s coming!
Hi all! Back after the (too)short holiday
week, we are back and in full force.
In this week‘s issue you can read about a fun
trip to Lahti which the Game Designers took
a few weeks back. You‘ll get to see some cool
old cars and find out where you can see more
of them, and some old planes as well.
Right before the holiday week there was ano-
ther of the infamous Appro student „parties“.
Sarah writes about pros and cons of Appro,
what it is and gets you all set for the next one.
You might be surprised to see a two pager of
posters. These are some big upcoming events

A PROPOS-APPRO
4
The last party before the short yet hopeful-
ly relaxing holiday was, of course, Appro. It
is a fixer part during every semester.
Every student knows it and every freshman
has heard stories about it, for better or for
worse. It sets itself apart from all the other
Kupla parties by being the one that actually
tests your durability under the influence of
alcohol.
How one can actually hold his or her liquor
and who will be the one hugging the toilet
at some point during the evening. Despite it
being such a traditional and often repeated
theme it also seems to be the only theme no
student has complained about it happening
over and over again. Maybe that is due to
most of them not being able to remember the
events of the previous night come morning
or because drinking as the theme of a party
being also the best theme for a party.
New this time around was not just the after
party commencing in the newly opened club
Lux, but also special batches for the most
able to hold a drink to sew onto their overalls.
It was certainly an evening to remember. Af-
ter all the best stories never start with: „Dude,
hold my tea, I‘m going to do a thing...“ And
an evening spend drinking is an evening well
spend - as long as you do it reasonably.

PUUDOO BUS STOP
Most of you must probably notice
that there is a new bus stop bench
on Kasarminmäki campus this year
(FYI: It was not there last year!).
Fortunately, we had the chance to
talk to Dario Vidal, one of the project
team members of the bus bench to
see the stories behind that work.
The idea was initially from Matti-
Vaskimo‘s thesis, and the team took
the project idea over for Wood Aca-
5
demy to produce the actual piece in 2012. Ho-
wever, it did not start right away because of pa-
per work from the city council until last summer.
The good point of the project, as Dario told us,
is that they did everything themselves in the
school, from assembling to the constructing.
Most of you may not know that the bus stop is
named PuuDoo. Puu means “wood” in Finnish
and Doo represents the doing, executing.
The wave surface of the work is the sine waves
– there are 8 of them and are done in mathe-
matical formula. Even if it‘s not as
comfortable as an office chair to sit,
the team had had good feedback
from our students. For the team, the
whole work represents the school
spirit and they hope in the future
there will be more works to be dis-
played like this one.
You can even check the time-lapse
video of the bus stop assemblling
on Insider‘s Facebook page!

FIELD TRIP TO LAHTI
6
“You’re in the middle of the field in the barn which is full of
historical aircrafts” sounds nice. But “You’re in the middle
of the field in the barn which is full of historical aircrafts, but
you’re freezing and it’s raining” sounds not that inspirati-
onal for drawing anything at all. So we just watched some
great aircrafts, that represented the spirit of war way better
then pictures in Google do.
And yes, we were allowed to get inside the aircrafts which
made the biggest impression to all of us. Interesting thing
is that both museums are a private property. Nice to know
people in Finland have both desire and opportunity to take
care about some very important things, that were used to
create the modern world as we see it now.
If you are interested about going to either one of the-
se museums now, you can get more information on:
antinautomuseo.fi or [email protected].

On the 09th of September in the program of our Game
Desig nResearch and Sketching course our class had
planned a field trip to Lahti.
Our first stop was a car museum, Antin Automuseo, in-
Vesivehmaa just outside of Lahti. A big two-floored barn
doesn’t really look like a museum from outside, but once
you enter it a splendid variety of retro cars grows in front of
you. We had about an hour worth of time to make sketches
of a number of rather old timey cars before moving onto the
next museum. When the sketches were ready the museum
owners took a look at some of them.
That perfect feeling when somebody’s so impressed by the
drawing that they eventually ask you to send it to them
via e-mail so that your work can be proudly hanged on the
wall next to the car itself. KYAMK should be proud of its
students. The next stop of our trip was the Aviation muse-
um filled with aircrafts used during the Second World War.
Although we were supposed to make some sketches here
as well, we were not able to do that because of the weather.

Patteri Network is creating opportunities and reaching
out everywhere. Most recently, they had a young visitor
interested in Kyamk and Patteri. She spent some time
at Kyamk and the Patteri office, meeting the staff and
doing different things. Her name is Pauliina Palmu and
here is a short interview about her and her experience
at Kyamk.
Pauliina, tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am Pauliina Palmu and I am 15 years old. I am at the
High-School here in Kouvola called Kankaan koulu, before
I was at the “Yhteiskoulu” but as most people know, it
burned down. So, now we are at the other school. It is my
last year at the High-School next year I will go to “Lukio”.
After my graduation I would like to apply to Kyamk.
What are you planning to study at Kyamk?
I would like to study Media, photography especially.
What are your interests?
I love photography. I also like singing and I like to go to
the Gym, my plan is to go to a Fitness Model competition
when I am ready for it.
It is great to hear that you already have great plans for
your future. Why did you come to Kyamk now and how
long are staying?
I will stay for a week at Kyamk. At my school we have this
project call Introduction to the working life, and we can
take a look how a normal day at work looks like. So I could
come to Kyamk and take a look what is happening here
and meet all kind of interesting people.
So I guess you really enjoy your time here? What did
PATTERI NETWORK
you see so far and what kind of impression you have?
Yes, I really enjoy my time here, Satu (Peltola) is showing
me around. I also saw how the exam week works, the Paja
workshops, joining lessons and today I am with Patteri.
What do you think about Patteri and who did you meet?
Well, I met Antti, he is a really a nice guy and today I am
with Sabine, she is also very nice and she showed me a lot
of their material they made during their events. It is really
nice to watch all the videos they made and the pictures.
This is really what is interesting to me the most. She also
offered me an internship during the summer, and I am
really excited about it.
That sounds really interesting, can you tell us what you
are doing at the internship?
Patteri will have next summer again the “Summer Camp”
and I will be there again for a week. My job will be taking
photos during the Camp and also to make my first profes-
sional videos, which is very exciting. They will show me
how all the cutting and editing of the video will work and
also what I need to make it happen. It is great that they
gave me the chance to do it.
Well, that sounds awesome. What you will tell your
friends about Kyamk?
That I had really a great time. I met a lot of great people
and it is a fun place to study.
Thank you Pauliina for the interview it was a pleasure to
meet you, and I guess we will see you around pretty soon!

A Most Wanted Men is a British espionage thriller based on the book by John le Carre.
The almost tortured to death Russian-Chechen Issa Karpov turned up in Hamburg. While
searching for the illegally obtained inheritance of his father he finds refuge with the Islamic
community. The young and idealistic criminal defence lawyer Annabel Richter ends up
helping Issa, as well as the banker Tommy Brue who watches over the fortune of Issa’s
father.
His activities soon grab the attention of the leader of a German espionage unit, Günther
Bachmann, as well as that of CIA agent Martha Sullivan. In the course of the movie Issa
appears to be the victim, perpetrator, imposter and extremist fanatic in one person who
makes him the most wanted man.
This highly emotional, action-driven movie won‘t let you go until the very last minute, at
which point you may become really frustrated and angry. Then again, it is a superbly made,
intelligent espionage story that comes across more contemporary than most movies of this
category nowadays. It is a story about compassion, betrayal, power and the modern post
9/11 world we live in. The promise of the „Große Freiheit“ of Hamburg appears to shrink
in a world filled with uncertainty and mistrust. All in all, a brilliantly made movie.
