The rumor inaccurately indicated that there were only 70 students in the school. I can tell you for certain that the rumor is false. Our school board was pleased to support the town of Crescent by investing $2 million to rebuild Crescent in 2006-2008, after an unfortunate fire. Since that time, we have celebrated the opening of a beautiful school and the excellent achievement level of the students who attend Crescent. In fact, during last school year, students at Crescent were some of the highest achieving students in western Iowa, as shown by the following percentage of students who were proficient on the state assessment, ITBS: Third Grade Fourth Grade Fifth Grade Math 00% 93.3% 86.9% Reading 87.6% 00% 95.6% The results on these tests demonstrated without a doubt that students at Crescent are well taught and well supported by their teachers, families and community. Every school district in Iowa faces an uncertain future, though, as legislators wrestle with ways to balance the state budget. In 2009-200, the state cut all schools’ budgets by 0%, which resulted in significant reductions to many aspects of the school district. In the past three years, the district has closed two schools due to small enrollment: Pusey, and Washington. If difficult times continue, the school district may be forced to make difficult decisions in the future, but not in the immediate future. Crescent School needs the support of the entire community to guarantee operation of the school into the future. If the enrollment at Crescent were actually as low as 70, there would probably be no way to justify continuation. For the 20-202 school year, though, there are 94 students attending Crescent. Fifteen of those come to Crescent from other neighborhoods in the Council Bluffs School District. Nine of the students come to us from other districts. There are 24 students who live in the Crescent attendance area but attend schools in other districts this year. Needless to say, the higher the number of students who attend Crescent, the higher the likelihood that education will continue in the school in the same fashion as occurs currently. There are tentative, very early plans to try to provide some sort of a science – technology focus school at Crescent in the future, if funding can be found to support the program. We hope that having the school designated as a focus school would encourage more students to attend the school. The district is looking for grants or other funding that could support up to $00,000 to provide added technology for use by all students in the school. If there is one or more businesses or community supporters who would like to “fast forward” the plans for a focus school, I would be happy to talk with them. At the same time, district and Community Education Foundation officials are also looking for ways to support the dream of a special focus for Crescent Elementary School in the near future. The purpose of this letter is to put to rest the idea that Crescent has been selected to close as a school site in the near future. However, I hope that the letter encourages members of the Crescent community to find any ways possible to support the school and to reinforce the idea that the school is valued and necessary for the good of the town. School board members and district officials have honored their promise to care for the children of Crescent in the best way possible. Those same officials need to know that all the members of the community value the school and will work to keep it in place by their actions as well as by their words. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I am very proud of the students, teachers, and families that are part of the Crescent community, and I look forward to many years of exceptional achievement at Crescent School. The following letter is in response to a rumor that suggests that Crescent Elementary School will be closed in the very near future. MINUTES OF THE REGULAR CITY OF CRESCENT COUNCIL MEETING November 7th, 2011...THE CRESCENT CITY COUNCIL met in regular session in the Crescent Community Hall at 7:02pm pursuant to the law. Mayor Leggio called the meeting to order. The following Council members were present: Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan. CLARK stated that he wanted a correction to the minutes of Oct. 20. He stated that Fall Festival committee should be Crescent Optimist Club paying the park rental fee and submitting proceeds from the dunk tank. Clark also asked for a more explicit motion on south end of Powells Addition Rd. MOTION BY ANDERSON, seconded by Stokes that Clark has complied with all council has asked him to do with the road and that this subject matter of road issues is closed from this day forward. Anderson, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan. Clark, abstain. Motion carried. MOTION BY ANDERSON, seconded by Stokes to accept the consent agenda with the corrections of the minutes above. Anderson, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan. Clark, abstain. Motion carried. MAYOR MARIALICE LEGGIO proclaimed the week of Nov. 3-9, 20 as American Education Week. 20 ANNUAL REPORT submitted for approval. MOTION BY STOKES, seconded by Jacobsen to approve the 20 annual report. Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan, all ayes. Motion carried. Kief’s Full Throttle liquor license submitted for approval. MOTION BY CLARK, seconded by Anderson to approve license. Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan, all ayes. Motion carried. U-Stop #23 liquor license submitted for approval. MOTION BY CLARK, seconded by Stokes to approve license. Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan, all ayes. Motion carried. ANDERSON reported on information obtained regarding lagoon expansion. He also stated that he has met with Ia. Homeland Security, Geotechnical Engineers, Olsson & Assoc. and a FEMA representative. They all did a tour of the lagoon site. FEMA is requesting a detailed damage description and a cost analysis prior to committing to any assistance. If assistance is approved the engineering costs would be included. Olsson & Assoc. has provided the necessary information to FEMA. ANDERSON also submitted an agreement from Olsson & Assoc. in regards to the sewer manholes. This agreement would cover specs, bidding process, design and inspections. He asked that council review this agreement and be put on Dec. 20 agenda. ANDERSON also reported that there have been informal discussions for over a year ago with R. Romeo, Mayor Leggio, Morgan, and Fire Chief Barrett regarding property off of Hwy 988. It was determined in these discussions that the lagoon size posed a problem. Two months ago there were more discussions looking at options. Anderson and Romeo’s lawyer went and talked to Kay Mocha regarding septics. As any buildings would be more than 200’ away from the sewer main according to the city’s ordinance, it would be feasible for the septic situation to be used. There again was a meeting on -5- with parties involved at the site and it was agreed that five (5) acres of this property would be donated to the City of Crescent for a fire station on the condition that it would be done in 0 years or it would revert back to Romeo. There will be another meeting at the site on Saturday -2- (weather permitting) if any would like to attend to see the area being discussed. WATER TAP @ 20536 S. 85TH ST. submitted for approval. Homeowner has complied with all stipulations. MOTION BY STOKES, seconded by Jacobsen to approve water tap. Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Jacobsen, Morgan, all ayes. Motion carried. JIM CAMPIN/PARK BOARD reported that the dugouts are almost done. He will be meeting with Glencoe Electric regarding the volleyball lights and also McKinnis Roofing for the picnic shelter. They are in the process of cutting the infield into a diamond and the playground pieces are in so as soon as weather permits the playground equipment will be finished. GALEN BARRETT/FIRE CHIEF reported 24 calls for the year. He is also very pleased with the 5 acres that is being donated. RON OLSON/PLANNING COMMISSION reported that they only have a shed application and didn’t have a meeting on it as it is already done prior to the application. STOKES/MAINTENANCE reported they are ready for snow. The city does need to look at different options for storing salt/sand. New materials have arrived for the new maintenance building as it received considerable damage due to the hail storm. He is also looking into putting up ‘3 way stop ahead’ Signs to give additional warnings. MOTION BY MORGAN, seconded by Clark to adjourn the meeting. MEETING adjourned at 7:50pm

Tell us your favorite Crescent memory...recent or from the past.

Question of the Month?• Cathy Steenson: One of my favorite Crescent memories is taking the kids to swim and take lessons at Camp Pokamoke in the summers. It was almost as good as having a private pool.

• Sandra L. Rowe: My favorite memory in Cresent is at my brother’s house for Christmas with my mom and all my nieces, and nephews.

• Val Jacobsen: The Crescent Fun Days: the whole town and lots of others coming together to watch the parade and then seeing the faces of the little kids during the frog jumping contests.

• Lance Sulanic: Eating at the Pink Poodle with my wife - had such great service.

• Tom Shea, Jr.: Hanging out at the grocery store that used to be located by Denny’s Place. On hot, summer days, they had air-conditioning.

• Aaron Jacobsen: When the ditches along Highway 83 flooded and I along with friends played in the water. One of the TV news crews stopped and we were on TV. It was approximately 987. I was seven years old.

• Jody Shea: First...Being proposed to at Denny’s Place on New Year’s Eve of ‘96. Second...Seeing all the people at the first softball game after volunteers brought the ball diamond “back to life”.

• Cheryl Rowe: Mine is recent...when my husband came home from Henry’s Diner & told me I-680 was reopening in 2 days!

• Wendy Smith: Eating pizza at Denny’s Place with my cousin and her husband.

• Sue Nordstrom: The year was 974. For a break from the usual routine of the “Crescent Improvement Club” monthly meeting, Evonne Allen was able to book some top models from Beno’s for a Spring Fashion Show...complete with accessories and make up. What a nice surprise!! Do you recognize any of these models? If not, see page 0.

• Elvis Jacobsen: Watching the kids play together.

• Sarah Linehan: Playing with my best friend in the ditch while our brothers jumped over us on their bicycles.

• Holly Jacobsen: Announcing my engagement to my fiancee’s niece and nephew--Ethan and Rylie and Ethan saying “and you are going to have a baby” and Rylie then saying “no Uncle Aaron is not mature enough to have a baby”.

• Rylie and Ethan Linehan: Riding our three wheeler, swimming, biking, playing with friends and staying with our grandma and grandpa.

Next month’s question due by December 18th...What’s was the best Christmas present you

received as a child? Email: [email protected]

November seems a particularly fitting time to say thank you to various people. This month we thank Steve Hultman for fixing the window in our playhouse, New Horizon Presbyterian Church who donated a lot of food left over from a dinner to us, and the businesses who let the preschoolers trick or treat. They were Peoples’ Bank, the post office and Henry’s. At Henry’s, it wasn’t just the people who work there, but many of their regular customers apparently came prepared. The kids were able to walk around several of the tables and get treats, too. They got a big kick out of it. We were also invited to Shirley Collins’ to trick or treat. She isn’t a business, but she is in the business of doing nice things for our kids. In the same vein of thankfulness, we welcome back Pat Bigelow to our staff. She has been out for six weeks for recovery from surgery. But she is back, and the kids were glad to see her. We do want to remind everyone that CECC families are selling cookie dough and some foods from Red Wheel for the next couple of weeks to help raise money for the center. We hope, if you are approached, you will buy something. Or you can contact us at 545-906, and we’ll be happy to sell you something directly. If you do make a purchase, thank you so much from the kids, families and staff! Every year, at this time, we ask the kids what they are thankful for. The answers are often surprising and thoughtful and always make us smile.

—Preschoolers—• Hayden: Mud and monster trucks • Kadie: My stuffed jaguar and turtle pillow• Jacob: Candy • Tristin: All kinds of treats

—School-Agers—• Alyssa: My family and snow • Ella: Daddy and turkeys• Brianna: Noodles, my dog, ice cream, my family • Isabell: My DS• Alex: Pop corn and pumpkin pie • Misia: Hot wings and Mom and Dad• Summer: My family • Maddy: My dog and cat, cheetahs , zebras• Morgan: Mashed potatoes • Cole: My DS and games, pizza, spaghetti• Luke: Money, my house, my family, teachers, and vitamins.

We wish all of you a Happy Holiday!

• Walked Across Iowa! The recess Walking Club has made it across Iowa (beating out the snow!). Students earned mileage tickets for walking and some names were drawn for prizes. Our winners of t-shirts and playground balls were: Summer, Maddy, Emily, and Sean from Kindergarten, Lucas from st grade, Brianna, Brooklin and Aly from 2nd grade, Neyla and Tessa from 3rd grade, and Breydon from 4th grade. See photo below.

• Crocodile vs. Alligator? Do you know the difference? Thanks to 3 students from Abraham Lincoln HS, the students at Crescent now do. These students made a presentation about different animals, and students had an opportunity to feel the fur of a bear, a tiger, and a cheetah. Thank you to Henry Doorly Zoo for making this presentation possible.

• We Love to Sing! Students are putting on several concerts this fall. We had a fantastic turnout for our st/2nd/3rd grade October Rocktober concert. Kindergarteners will perform some “Turkey Tango” songs on November 29th and 4th/5th graders will put us in the holiday spirit with a concert on December 5th.

• Pop Secret or Emerald Nuts? We are looking for some UPC package codes (sometimes they have the Labels for Education code identifying it too) from any kind of Pop Secret popcorn or Emerald nuts. There is a bonus promotion going on until December 20th - please put them in an envelope and label them as Pop Secret and Emerald. Any collections can be dropped off by December 20th at the school or at Peoples bank in the collection bin by the door. Thank you!

• Help Us Collect! We continue to collect Box Tops, Labels for Education (Campbell’s soup labels and many more products), Super Saver receipts, and Hy-Vee receipts. There is a collection box located in the Peoples Bank lobby in Crescent. These collections can also be dropped off at the school. Receipts must have DATE and AMOUNT on them to be valid. Receipts can be from any store location.

A Message from Senator Johannes...

As we prepare for the holiday season, I invite you to take a moment to spread Christmas cheer to someone in uniform. The American Red Cross is asking for your participation in Holiday Mail for Heroes, a program that gathers and distributes holiday cards for service members, veterans and their families across the world. Many men and women in uniform are overseas this season, unable to enjoy this joyous season with family and friends. We are eternally grateful for their sacrifices, which allow us to celebrate safely and freely here at home. I hope you’ll join me in thanking them this Christmas by sending cards to the address below, or by dropping them off at one of my offices by December 9th:
