They reached out to 50 stores in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, set up displays and had customers sample the Cajun-styled salsa. They even named the business, “2 Sisters’ Salsa Company,” after daughters Sarah (13) and Emily (10). “We got enough positive feedback to continue moving forward,” said Deshotels. In Louisiana, the salsa can be found in: Alexander’s, Calandros, Calvin’s, LeBlanc’s, Matherne’s, Oak Point and Rouses. 2 Sisters’ Salsa is also in Target and will be in Wal-Mart this fall. “There are so many uncertainties, but I have a passion and willingness to work. You have to stick with it. I’ve learned all that being a farmer. There are highs and lows in farming, so that has definitely prepared me for this new venture,” added Deshotels. As for the two young girls who inspired this new venture, Deshotels says he and Brooke are trying to instill a good work ethic and have them involved in the business at their young ages. “As a farmer and as a father, you want to help your children advance and succeed, but they need to know how to do the work.” Besides salsa, 2 Sisters’ Salsa Company also produces a bar-b-que sauce derived from the salsa. Patrick Deshotels’ story is much like others who grew up on a farm. A third generation farmer,

he knows all about hard work. When Deshotels went to college to study agri-business at LSU, he

returned to Avoyelles Parish to continue farming. Then one day, while enjoying some chips and homemade salsa, Deshotels got an idea.

“We often make our own salsa out of vegetables from our garden, but we also make it the Louisiana way,” said Deshotels.

Anyone from Louisiana knows what that means. Deshotels’ Cajun style salsa consists of a special spice blend to make it the Louisiana way.

“You can tell a difference especially when you’re using fresh vegetables and our own special spice blend,” he added. Deshotels - who farms corn, crawfish, milo, rice, soybeans, and wheat - purchases the vegetables he uses from a local produce supplier.

Deshotels said he could not predict what the public would like, but he knew what he liked. What he also knew was that he wanted to leave a legacy for his two daughters. He believed his new passion for Cajun-style salsa could be the hook.

“I’ve been farming on my own

for 20 years. There’s no guarantee these girls are going to take over the farm. They may, but I just don’t know.” Three years ago, Deshotels and his wife, Brooke, decided to test the product.

After conducting research on equipment and marketing, Deshotels designed the facility where he now creates his salsa in bulk. He hires locals to work in the facility and make the product and he gets the vegetables he uses from other local produce suppliers. “It’s certainly a big risk, but I plan for this to be a long term deal. Success doesn’t happen overnight,” said Deshotels.

Besides Louisiana, 2 Sisters’ Salsa is in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma,

Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

“As a farmer and as a father, you want to help your children advance and succeed, but they need to know how to do the work.”

Besides salsa, 2 Sisters’ Salsa Company also produces a bar-b-que sauce derived from the salsa. For more information on 2 Sisters’ Salsa Company, go to www.2sisterssalsa.com or their facebook page.

In addition to Louisiana, the Cajun-style salsa is now on store shelves in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

After researching equipment and marketing, Deshotels designed the facility where he now creates his salsa in bulk.

Baton Rouge, LA (September 26, 2017) – Five teenagers are in trouble for allegedly destroying Christmas trees at Shady Pond Tree Farm in Pearl River, La. The damage is estimated at $5,985.

Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) investigators with the forestry division say the teens admitted to “tree tackling” or wrestling trees.

Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said, “We received a complaint from the tree farm owner that damage was done to his property over the Labor Day weekend. Our investigators

coordinated with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office to find those responsible.”

Investigators say approximately 10 trees were destroyed on Monday, September 4, 2017 and approximately 53 trees were damaged on Sunday, September 24.

A 16-year-old male was charged in St. Tammany Parish on Monday, September 25 with one count of felony criminal damage, one count of misdemeanor criminal damage and two counts of criminal trespassing.

Two seventeen-year-old suspects

were also charged on Monday with one count each of felony criminal damage and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. One is charged with one count of criminal trespassing and the other is charged with two counts of criminal trespassing and one count of misdemeanor criminal damage.

Another 16-year-old suspect from Carriere, Miss. turned himself into authorities today and was charged with two counts of criminal trespassing, one count of felony criminal damage to property and one count of misdemeanor

criminal damage.The fifth suspect, another

16-year-old male, is expected to turn himself into authorities today and will be charged with one count of misdemeanor criminal damage and one count of criminal trespassing.

Investigators say the suspects indicated they were “bored” and using marijuana when one of the teenagers came up with the idea to wrestle the trees.

Three of the teenagers are from Pearl River in St. Tammany Parish. No word on which city the fourth Louisiana teenager resides.

The Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction is now accepting nominations for its induction ceremony, which will be held March 22, 2018, at the L’Auberge Hotel in Baton Rouge.

The nomination form can be obtained online at www.louisianaagriculturehallofdistinction.com or through any parish LSU AgCenter extension office. The deadline for the nominations is Nov. 20.

A joint effort of the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Radio Network, the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction honors individuals who have made significant contributions to agriculture or agriculture-related industries. Nominations can represent farming, ranching, forestry, aquaculture, fisheries, education or agribusiness.

“There are many individuals in our state who have dedicated their lives to improving Louisiana agriculture,” said LSU Vice President for Agriculture Bill Richardson. “This industry continues to provide our food

and fiber and is an essential part of our state’s economy. Our state owes much to agriculture, and this event recognizes those men and women who have made an everlasting contribution to it.”

Three individuals were recognized in 2017. C.A. “Buck” Vandersteen, executive director of the Louisiana Forestry Association, and Ray Young, a farmer and crop consultant from Wisner, were honored at the ceremony. James Graugnard, who served as president of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation for 26 years, was inducted posthumously.

“Our state is blessed with some of the most productive and innovative farmers and ranchers in the world. We also have top notch researchers and ag consultants who have changed the way we in agriculture grow better crops and raise healthier animals, all with fewer inputs. It’s important that we have a way to recognize the ones who are still with us and remember those who have passed on, and that’s what the Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction does,” said Ronnie Anderson, Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation president.

“We are pleased the Hall of Distinction has become a signature event each year as we honor those who have contributed to the state’s most significant industry,” said Louisiana Radio Network President Jim Engster. “The Louisiana agriculture industry helps feed and clothe all of us, and this is just one small way to say thank you to all our farmers and ranchers. And all of us involved with the program are more than proud and happy to do so.”

“Agriculture and forestry are critical to the state of Louisiana’s economy. They are industries that continue to grow and prosper. It is important to recognize those who make outstanding contributions to agriculture, forestry, their state and to their communities,” said Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain.

For more information, contact Don Molino with the Louisiana Radio Network at 225-291-2727, ext. 210, or [email protected] or Bobby Soileau with the LSU AgCenter at 225-578-3659 or [email protected].

After 43 years, Dr. Alma Roy, who taught veterinary medicine to LSU vet school students, is retiring.

As associate director of the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and an assistant professor in the Pathobiological Sciences department, Roy taught the clinical diagnostic microbiology course offered in the professional veterinary curriculum.

Even Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., was a student of Roy’s. “Every student who went through the vet school took a class with Dr. Roy,” said Strain.

On October 3, 2017, Strain presented Roy with a commendation for her distinguished career.

Dr. Roy studied West Nile virus, which is transmitted from reservoir species of birds to humans, horses, and other animals via mosquito

bites. Dr. Roy’s research involved working with others at the School of Veterinary Medicine in creating a vaccine that would produce specific humoral immune responses against West Nile virus that would be capable of neutralizing the virus and preventing disease in horses. Dr. Roy’s lab also performed environmental surveillance for the state of Louisiana which monitors local West Nile virus activity in vectors and non-human vertebrae hosts in advance of epidemic activity affecting humans. Involvement in environmental surveillance provided an opportunity for detection of the current strain of virus which can be used for vaccine development.

Dr. Roy is currently working with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health through a contract for the detection of Zika virus in mosquito vectors in Louisiana.

(10/05/17) Baton Rouge, La. — A deadly disease called lethal yellowing of palms has been positively confirmed on silver date palms and Chinese windmill palms in Baton Rouge, said LSU AgCenter plant doctor Raj Singh.

“In the United States, the disease has only been found in Florida,” Singh said.

A similar disease called date palm lethal decline, also known as Texas Phoenix palm decline, has previously been reported on Canary Island date palm trees in New Orleans during December 2013.

Lethal yellowing and date palm lethal decline are caused by two different strains of a phytoplasma. The lethal yellowing of palms strain is closely related, but genetically distinct from date palm lethal decline phytoplasma.

“It is a fatal disease that rapidly declines and kills the infected palms,” he said.

The pathogen is known to cause decline in more than 35 palm species. Some host palms found in Louisiana include Canary Island date palm, Chinese windmill palm, edible date palm, silver date palm and queen palm.

“A plant hopper is responsible for transmitting the pathogen into palms, where the pathogen colonizes systemically in the phloem tissue,” Singh said.

Symptoms of the disease in tall palms start with discoloration of older leaves. Then, the infected leaves turn reddish-brown to dark-brown, and they eventually die.

Palms infected with this disease exhibit a large proportion of discolored leaves in the lower region of the canopy.

Infection on palms that produce fruit leads to premature fruit drop and dead flowers.

“As the disease develops, the spear leaf dies after approximately one-third of the lower leaves have discolored, and diseased palms die rapidly within three to five months after the first appearance of symptoms,” he said.

A symptomatic palm with more than one-fourth of its foliage discolored in the canopy and a dead spear leaf must be removed immediately, as it may serve as a source of the pathogen for the plant hopper to transmit the disease to other palms.

Accurate identification of this disease in the field is required for effective disease management, Singh said.

Other diseases and disorders of palms may produce similar symptoms, which can make it hard to identify the disease based solely on symptoms.

Molecular detection of the pathogen from symptomatic tissue is required for positive

confirmation.“Samples from suspected palms can

be submitted to the LSU AgCenter Plant Diagnostic Center for positive identification. But before you collect any samples, please

contact us,” Singh said.More information about lethal yellowing

of palms can be obtained by calling Singh at 225-578-4562 or by email at [email protected].
