HOUSTON IS WORtD’S $1XTH-tARGEST PORTTHIRD IN COUNTRY In 1988 the Port ofHouston handled nearly 125 millionshort tons of cargo. The busiest worldport for the year was Rotterdam, with 255 million tons of cargo.
According to these figures, Hou-ston was the third-busiest port in theUnited States, surpassing Valdez,Alaska; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; andHampton Roads, Virginia, in ton-nage handled.
The Port of Houston has movedupward two notches in the list ofleading world ports, according toport statistics released recently.

U.S. COAST GUARD CELEBRATES BICENTENNIALThe U.S. Coast Guard entered its
third century of service to the nationin August. Units from Houston andGalveston celebrated 200 years ofprotecting and defending the coun-try’s coastline with a picnic atChallenger Seven Memorial Park.
The Coast Guard is something ofan anachronism in the history ofU.S. government agencies. In mostcases, agencies have prolifer-
ated.., with two or three agenciestoday handling tasks that were oncemanaged by one organization. TheCoast Guard, on the other hand, cur-rently performs tasks assigned in thepast to seven different governmentagencies.FROM 1790 The Revenue Cutter Serv-ice was the first, created in Newbury-port, Massachusetts, on Aug. 4, 1790.The Coast Guard came into being in

Originally, the Revenue CutterService’s primary mission was tohelp enforce U.S. Customs regula-tions and ensure collection ofcustoms duties. Today’s Coast Guardis responsible for aids to navigation, boating safety, defense operations, environmental response, maritimelaw enforcement, marine inspec-tion, marine licensing, port safetyand security, search and rescue andwaterways management.BUSY YEAR Coast Guard units fromHouston and Galveston have had abusy year. When the tanker MEGABORG exploded this summer, theCoast Guard mobilized units fromCape Cod, Massachusetts, to Ala-meda, California, to assist in track-ing and monitoring the 3.9 milliongallons of oil that spilled into theGulf of Mexico.
More recently, the Coast Guarddealt with an oil spill and closing ofthe Houston Ship Channel after adamaged barge sank near Redfish Is-land in Galveston Bay.
Other incidents that required localCoast Guard attention included achemical mishap in Freeport, Texas, aboard the T/S MARINE CHEMIST;a protest in which 200 shrimp boatsblocked Bolivar Roads and theHouston Ship Channel; a fire aboarda tanker in a shipyard at the Port ofHouston; and the rescue of sevenpeople after their fishing vessel sankin hurricane-force winds.

The center wasbuilt in 1972, but Houston’s historyof providing services for seafarersdates back to 1928 when theSeamen’s Center Church wasestablished at the port. The center, like the church that preceded it, is
run by volunteers and the represen-tatives of 12 religious denomina-tions.
"The center needs a new roof, andthis year’s event will fund that proj-ect," said the Rev. Rivers Patout, co-chairperson for the gala.
Tickets for the evening are $125per person. Ticket and table sponsor-ship information may be obtainedby calling (713) 672-0511.
CHILEAN LINE DIVIDESATLANTIC/GULF SERVICE
Chilean Line has divided its Atlan-tic and Gulf service into two services.
Chilean Line has dedicated twovessels - the M/V COPIAPO and theM/V ACONCAGUA -- exclusively tothe Gulf service. Previously, theseships sailed in the combined Gulfand Atlantic service.
"With the combined service, we of-fered 26 half sailings a year. Now weoffer 18 full sailings a year," saidJohn Dillon, Chilean Line vice presi-dent. "In effect, we’ve increased ourcapacity by five full sailings. Andnow we provide direct service to theGulf."INCREASED CAPACITY The multi-purposevessels can accommodate container-ized, breakbulk, heavy-lift, refriger, ated and liquid bulk cargo. Eachfeatures self-sustaining cranes witha lift capacity of 80 tons, containercapacity of 500 TEUs and breakbulkcapacity of approximately 450,000cubic feet.
The ships call at Houston every 21days. From Houston, Chilean Linevessels sail to ports in Panama, Peruand Chile. Bolivia is served via Chile.
"We think we’ve opened a morelucrative northbound trade to theGulf," Dillon said. "We’ve increasedour southbound capacity by about 50percent, and we’ve improved ourtransit time southbound. We prideourselves on our on-time perform-ance."
