Escape to the countryside

When it comes time for spring break, many parents don’t have a complete week of vacation like their children do. A little trip to the country might be just enough to offer those families a chance to recharge their batteries and spend some relaxing time together. A long weekend away from home is often enough to give the impression of having experienced a real family holiday.

How about dusting off the skis and setting out for a ski hill? Reserve a cottage, apartment, or hotel room close to the slopes, and you’ll get a lot of bang for your bucks. You’ll literally step out of your daily routine and will soon have the feeling of being on holidays. You kids will love the high energy vibe of a ski resort, and they’ll improve their winter sports skills. Make sure to book accommodations well in advance, as many other families might

have the same idea.If skiing isn’t an option, why not just

get away from the house for one or two nights and enjoy the peace and quiet of a rural area. Places to stay, both comfortable and rustic, can be rented for weekends in most areas, or if your budget is minimal, think about visiting family or friends who live in the country. They might be thrilled to have some company and get away from their own daily routines.

Playing in the pristine snow of the countryside, snowshoeing, walking in the woods, dog sled rides, snowball fights: there are so many exhilarating and relaxing activities to enjoy in the country. Even if you can only take a couple of days for it, a short trip away can help all the members of your family reset their winter-tired brains!

Cinemas and museums for the fight against

boredom!

Likely the most common thing heard during spring break is the dreaded

“I’m bored!” A great way to avoid this phenomenon is to plan ahead and organize well your children’s vacation time. For starters, just think of all those establishments that are perfectly suited for young children during their well-deserved vacations.

It’s well worth a day trip to go to bigger city centres where there one can find science and technology museums, natural history museums, as well as art museums or large galleries. Many smaller towns and regions also have historical museums that may be open during March break.

If the weather is bad, or if you would simply like your child to experience some culture and learning, a museum visit is a sure way to interest him or her in something other than the television. It’s not just because they’re on vacation that children’s brains should stop working! Many establishments offer activities specifically adapted for children at this time of year, such as discovery workshops, arts and crafts lessons, or specially adapted interactive children’s exhibits.

Another option for parents is to treat their children to a movie at the theatre. It may not be as educational as going to a museum, but children will certainly love the idea! Some movie theatres plan special programs and offer cheaper prices during spring break, taking care to present films suitable for the entire family.

Fun things to do with all the family

Spring break has finally arrived: an entire week of vacation. If you have taken some holiday time to stay home with the kids, and you hear from the weather forecaster that Mother

Nature is not going to cooperate, don’t despair. There are plenty of activities that can be organized for your kids in the comfort of your home.

First of all, enjoy the unstructured time. For a few days you won’t have to worry about getting the kids out of bed in time for the school bus, preparing lunches, and doing homework. Go with the flow, invent some meals, and choose a couple of enjoyable activities for each day.

Do your children love arts and crafts? Put together a craft box, with all kinds of materials and tools, and ask them to make decorations for your home. A mobile for a newborn, a painting for a bedroom, an ornament for the bookcase: these are all worthy projects that can be put together in one day or strung out over a week. If you participate yourself, you will have hours of fun together.

If you enjoy cooking, peruse some cookbooks with your child and take the time to prepare a tasty meal together. It’s a rare opportunity during a normal school week, when everything is has to be squeezed in between homework and bedtime. The children will love being involved and will be proud to taste the meal they helped to create.

After supper, you can all sit down together, snacks in hand, to have a long and enjoyable evening of family-rated films. It’s also a great time to dig out your old video cassettes of baby-movies and holiday footage. The children will probably go to bed a little later than usual, but they can sleep in and will remember such nights with fondness. Go ahead: spoil them! Spoil yourself!

It’s Spring Break!

Are you wondering how to keep your children busy over the Easter holidays? Try these two delightful craft projects.

Forest Rabbits

For this project inspired by Mother Nature, you’ll need:

• some small branches• white paint• a black marker• glue• coloured wool or stringSelect some small “Y” shaped

branches and break the ends so that the tops become the rabbits’ ears. Let your children draw the eyes and noses using a small brush and some white paint. Once the paint is dry, they can use the marker to draw the rabbits’ pupils. The next step is to glue some of the wool or string on to the branch to make the rabbits’ whiskers and wind some more wool or string lower down the branch to make the “body” of the rabbit. Now your children can have fun planting their masterpieces in your indoor plant pots or outside in your flowerbeds.

Giant Eggs

For this papier mâché project, gather together:

• one party balloon per child (inflated)

• vinyl glue (or a water and flour mixture)

• some newspapers cut into 2 cm x 20 cm strips

• paint• construction paperStart by dipping the newspaper strips

into the glue and sticking several layers of them onto the balloons.Depending on the age of the children, your help may be required for this part of the project. Leave the paper to dry for a day or two. Now your children can let their imaginations run wild when decorating these giant eggs with the paint and construction paper. They’ll love showing off these enormous eggs while waiting for the Easter Bunny to arrive.

Fun craft projects for your little bunnies

Have you invited family or friends for brunch or dinner over the Easter weekend? This is the perfect opportunity to concoct some wonderful dishes, enjoy yourself and impress your guests. You can make sure the event is a roaring success by following these three suggestions.

Invite spring into your home

Decorate your home with pastel colours to evoke the rejuvenation and freshness of spring. Hang up garlands and balloons and decorate the table with a bouquet of beautiful spring flowers such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils or lilies. Another great idea is to fill some wine glasses or small bowls with chocolate eggs. They’ll be decorative as well as delicious!

Your personal touch

Use your Easter party as an excuse to try variations of traditional dishes. Look for inspiration in magazines and newspapers, and then have fun adding your personal touch. Why not try a new mystery ingredient and then during the meal, ask your guests to try to guess what it is and give a prize to the winner—a chocolate rabbit, perhaps?

Some fun games

Plan a couple of games to add to the party atmosphere: karaoke, musical chairs, Twister, a drawing game or an old-fashioned Easter egg hunt. And if it’s a beautiful day, why not go for a walk together? It’s a great opportunity for everyone to have their fill of all that wonderful fresh air. Happy Easter!

A festive get-together for Easter Have you thought about planning

a family activity over the Easter weekend? If you’re stuck for ideas, here are three suggestions.

Easter farm

Who doesn’t love animals, especially when they’re little? Enjoy a visit to a farmfor Easter and pet some cute baby chicks, rabbits, goats and ducklings. Oohs and aahs, guaranteed!

Gourmet outing

Pamper your taste buds by organizing an outing to your family’s favourite gourmet stores and restaurants, or visit new places that your relatives, friends or colleagues have recommended. The thought of all those mouth-watering flavours will help you be patient while waiting in line at crowded chocolate and candy stores.

Cultural outing

Nosing around a museum, enjoying a show, going to the movies, discovering a local nature interpretation centre — there are many places where you can experience a complete change of pace and have lots of fun over the Easter weekend

The Mermaidby: Louisa Miller

Mermaid fair with golden hair, Swims around her secret lair,Singing softly to herself,Sitting on a coral shelf.

Combs her hair with coral comb,Sleeps upon a bed of foam,Leaps and dives on moon-lit nightHelps fair maid and yonder knight.

Silvery voice entices man,Many ask to have her hand,Only laughs and swims away,Softly singing towards the bay.

Mermaid fair with golden hair,Swims around her secret lair,Singing softly to herself,Sitting on a coral shelf.

The Aviaryby: Alice Miller

Barn swallows swooping with joy in their flightOwl’s shy hooting on dark shaded perchHummingbirds whizzing through flowers and vinesRobins atop the white bark of the birch

Peacocks are strutting in paradise wildBluebirds are pecking at sunflower seedsNightingales melodies float from the woodMallards make ripples far down in the reeds

This is the home for the avian sortPlaces for birds, all of varying sizeThis is a zoo, yes, a feather-filled zooSo welcome, and please come inside

The Stormby: Jackson Pilchard

Stormy nights the wind doth bloweth,Pushing over things he knoweth. When the wind pulls upon the land,Trees blow swiftly looking grand.

Scattered toys and scattered branches,Lightning flashes when it passes.Calm days come and then we see,Life is scattered under trees.

The Hitby: River Sumpter

It’s almost time to start the gameThis is a chance to earn some fameWe do not know what is the fateAnd now we look right at the plate

And there the batter takes his placeHe hopes to make it to first baseThe pitcher now will raise his shoeThe pitcher knows just what to do

Here comes the pitch all quick and fastThe batter will not let it pastAnd with a noise just like a gunThe batter hit a great homerun

My Pig at the Fairby: Jude Grieser

Snappy the pig had a pen at the fair,Snappy would sleep in the heat of the day.Snappy was washed every day to stay clean,Snappy was friendly and Snappy was keen.

Selling the pig was the most fun of all,Cane in your hand and a brush at your side.Walking the pig all around the big ring,All you could hear was the auctioneer sing.

Shouting and pointing the man looked for hands,Looking for people to add to the pig. Finally someone gave their final price; The auctioneer said going once, going twice.

The Barracudaby: Jackson Crapuchettes

The barracuda very scary; It is not so very hairy. Its fearsome teeth are super sharp;Once I saw it kill a carp.

First it snuck up on its prey;Over prey I saw it lay.He sliced him here; he sliced him there; The blood was clouding everywhere.

The barracuda ate that carp;I played a tune upon a harp. The barracuda is so fine;No one can catch it on a line.

The Region 2 Gymnastics Championships will bring athletes from Washington,

Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Hawaii and Alaska to the Palouse for a 3 day qualifying event, April 1-3, 2016. “We are excited to bring this caliber of gymnastics to the area.” Says Mark Kindelspire, owner and head coach at Palouse Empire Gymnastics. “This is a level of competition where youth athletes are performing skills that you would see at a college level.”

Gymnasts participating in the championships will be competing in Levels 8, 9 and 10. They qualified to the event from their respective states and are vying for a spot at Level 9 Western

Nationals or Level 10 Junior Olympic Nationals. “It can be a stressful event for coaches and gymnasts. Their performance here determines if they go on to Nationals where recruiters are in attendance and scholarships are on the line.” says Kindelspire.“One of the highlights of the weekend is the Level 8 All-Star Battle of the States competition where the top 6 athletes from each of the states compete for bragging rights. It’s a fun, quick moving meet where you might even see a perfect 10.0”.

This is the second time in six years Palouse Empire Gymnastics of Moscow will host the event. “The event staff at Beasley Coliseum, Pullman Chamber of Commerce, area hotels and businesses have been great to work with.” Says Lynne Kindelspire, event coordinator.

The competition will bring 500 athletes, 150 coaches and another 1300 visiting spectators to the area. The regional economic impact will filter into the surrounding communities and businesses.

The event will run from 8am-10pm each day and is open to the public with daily passes available at the door.Adults $15, Youth =$10 and WSU/UI students $5. More information can be found at www.PalouseEmpireGymnastics.com
