Vedic chants initiated the Fair in Kool Kailash, in Katy where a diorama of Kailash 15 ft Manasa Sarovar, the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati, was built in associa-tion with IACHF architects Sachin Sharma, Radha Sharma and Sukhi Kohli. An Ice Shiva Lingam was installed oating in the middle of the Manasa Sarovar which created a gra-cious ambience of Lord Shivas abode. It was visual delight to see Lord Shiva and Parvati in the midst of Kailash and visi-tors spared no time in getting their pictures taken near the deities. Vamshith Kundoor, a young devotee shared her ex-perience of visiting 18 shak-thi peetas along with archana Kumkum (Vermillion) with many visitors.

The India Exhibit Presen-tation Competition had 50+ participants with diverse pre-sentations giving a panorama view of Indian heritage, cul-ture and traditions. It depicted Gods, temples, places, impor-tant rivers, festivals, lifestyle, yoga, health, languages, art, dance and music, even kings and renowned scientists were excellently presented by young generation of Indian-American descent. Divena Donthi was winner and Anika Ravishankar was runner up in ten and above category. Ruthvik Jonna was the winner and Vishnu Nat-araja runner up in the nine and below category.

The Cooking Competition was an interesting dimension of the Fair where chefs demon-strated healthy and easy cook-ing styles. The winner was Manjari Guturu for her dishes: Cranberry Fiber Rice & Qui-noa Veggie Delight (Salad)) and Renu Ahuja was runner up for her dish Dahi Gujia. How 2 Workshop showed learning free Yoga & Meditation, San-skrit, Rangoli, Indian Classical Dance, Ayurveda, Homeopa-thy, Dandiya, Dhothi, Saree Styles, Indian Wedding was well attended. The Vedic Ba-zaar that featured 20 booths for shopping, soliciting, socializ-ing and feasting was active and buzzing till closing time.

    Later in the evening, the

Vedic Fair 3 Talent Show-case started with Sloka-thon recitation of Vishnu sahas-ranama slokas without seeing by Ashirwads students Rhea Bhat, Shreya Sarathy, Pritam Hegde & Saanika Halapeti. This was followed by classical music performance by Swara-sudha Music Institute students

and the vibrant Bho Shambho dance performance by Abhi-naya School of Performance Arts students choreographed by Guru Indrani Parthasarathy. Around 6:30 PM was held the Ashirwads Vedic Walk, a col-orful show case of Shiva Puran Icons by 25 kids (ages 4 to 10 years) and was cheerfully ap-

plauded by the audiences. I am Shiva - The Mahadev,

a two- hour prime time play directed by Ashirwads Chief Teacher Geetha Ravula de-picted important episodes of Lord Shiva through delightful dances, enchanting acting by a team of 46 artists. The per-formance was so exquisitely

planned and executed that it had the audience riveted to their seats through the whole drama.

Once again, the Vedic Fair 3 was a phenomenon show and a testament of hard work, high quality achieved through sheer dedication of the Ashirwad - A Blessing team of Geetha and Sri Ravula, play Artists, performers, How 2 Workshop Experts, Sponsors & Support-ers IACHF (Sachin & Radha Sharma, Sukhi Kohli), Shri Sitaram Foundation, Hindus of Greater Houston, Mandap Creations, Frontier Consult-ing, ISKCON, Sanatan Hindu Center, Katy Indian Cultural Association & Booth Vendors.

  • VOICE OF ASIA 4 FRIDAY, March 7, 2014

    Q. My brother and I inherited our family home after my Mom died in 2010. He wants to sell the house to retire, but I do not. I would rather have the monthly rent that we both get. He wants to take me to court to FORCE me to sell the house. Can he legally do this?

    A. When two people jointly own a house and cannot agree on what to do with the property, either can ask a court to order the sale of the house and divide the proceeds. Because this will be a forced sale, involving attorneys and a legal proceeding, it is likely to produce less money than if you and your brother simply arrange the sale. My suggestion is to try to work this out, but if you brother insists on selling the house consider buying his interest yourself, or take steps to insure you get the highest possible price.

    Q. Can I name my husband as executor of my will if he also is going to be the beneciary?

    A. Almost anyone may serve as the executor of a will, including a beneciary. Basically, the only people who may not serve as executors are minors, incompetents, convicted fel-ons, or others a court nds unsuitable.

    Q. My daughter was injured at the playground area of our apartment complex by a child throwing construction debris at her. The injury required sutures and no one wants to take responsibility. The parent hasnt offered to help with the medical bills and the complex manager only asked if my daughter fell on the debris.

    A. Suing for the acts of children can be difcult. It will depend on the age of the child and whether the parent was properly supervising. I assume this was a young child, under the age of ten. If the child is ten or older, the parent is liable if it was an intentional act of the child. If the child is under 10, the parents are liable only if they were negligently super-vising the child. If the parent sat by and saw what the child was doing and let the child continue, the parent could be responsible.

The child could also be liable if the child was old enough to understand someone would get hurt and tried to hurt your daughter, or knew you shouldnt throw debris and still did. On the other hand, if the children were all just playing, and this was a case of kids will be kids, the child probably has no liability. If you think the child or the parent t these standards of liability and no one will help pay of your bills, consider ling a claim in justice court.

Based on what you say, the only way the apartment would be responsible is if it was negligent in leaving debris around the complex that children could play in and toss. The standard would be whether the complex acted reasonably with respect to cleaning-up the debris.

    Q. Do you still publish a free consumer newsletter? How do I subscribe? How often is it published?

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has apologised for the violence and street clashes between AAP and Bharatiya Janata Party workers in Delhi, Lucknow and many other places and appealed for calm. The detention of Kejri-wal in Gujarat on Wednesday sparked off street clashes be-tween AAP and BJP workers.

An FIR has also been led in connection with the clashes in the Parliament Street police station in Delhi on charges of rioting, damaging public prop-erty and obstructing public servants. 33 people from both parties have been detained at the Parliament Street police station.

Our workers were protest-ing peacefully. But they may have thrown one or two stones at the BJP workers after they

Kejriwal apologises for clashes between AAP, BJP; FIR led in Delhiwere attacked. I dont think this is right and I apologise on be-half of my party. I also appeal for calm and ask my supporters to not protest further, Kejriwal said.

The AAP chief, whos on a Gujarat tour, also added, Weve toured various parts of Gujarat and we see that there is no development, even though Modi claims there is. There are ruins instead of infrastructure for primary healthcare cen-tres.

Senior AAP leader Prashant Bhushan has now said that no ofcial FIR has been lodged against any of its leaders. The party has also said it will lodge a formal complaint against the Delhi Police for brutally beat-ing two of its members who were not part of the protest. AAP leaders will meet the Election Commission today and will demand a probe into the series of incidents.

    AAP leaders also accused

Gujarat Chief Minister Nar-endra Modi of ordering action against Kejriwal. Modi had ordered for everything that happened today. BJP does not want the reality of Gujarat to come to light, said AAP MLA Jagadeep Singh.

There were angry clashes and stone pelting as AAP and BJP workers clashed in Delhi, Lucknow and even Gujarat on Wednesday, soon after the Lok Sabha election dates were an-nounced. AAP workers rst targeted the BJP headquarters in Delhi around 5:30 pm, after hearing reports that the Gujarat Police had detained Arvind Ke-jriwal in Patan. AAP workers were seen hurling stones while BJP workers inside the ofce also attacked them throwing chairs outside.

AAP leader Ashutosh was at the forefront of the incident. This is Narendra Modis poli-tics of hate. This is the same as the one seen during the 2002 riots, he said.

On the other hand BJP leader Nalin Kohli said, They were pelting stones at us. I had to lead the counter-attack.

The situation outside the BJP headquarters soon went out of hand and the police had to use water cannons to control the violence. More than 20 people from both sides were injured and had to be taken to hospital.

As reports of the clash came in, in Lucknow too, things took an ugly turn as street ghts broke out. The protestors used lathis to beat each other even as the police stood and watched as mute spectators.

In Gujarat, Arvind Kejriwals car, which was unoccupied, was reportedly attacked. The Guja-rat Police, meanwhile, denied

that Kejriwal was detained at all, saying he was merely ques-tioned as he had not informed them of his roadshow as per the Model Code of Conduct.

The Election Commission has now sought status reports from all states. Clearly on a day that polls were announced, democracy in India touched a new low.

Pakistans PM calls Taliban peace talks committee today

    The sources said that the

proposals would be submitted to the prime minister suggest-ing the inclusion of govern-ments representative in the committee, and to hold direct

    2014

    by Rob LeverWASHINGTON, February 27,

2014 (AFP) - Americans have be-come so enamored of the Internet, they would more readily forgo tele-vision than online access, a survey showed Thursday.

The Pew Research Center survey released ahead of the 25th anniver-sary of the World Wide Web found 53 percent of US Internet users would nd it very hard to give up Web access, up from 38 percent in 2006.

Even when counting those who dont go online, Pew said 46 percent of all adults would nd it hard to give up the Internet.

By contrast, Pews survey showed 35 percent of all US adults televi-sion would be very hard to give up, compared with 44 percent in 2006.

Women were more likely than men to be attached to the Internet, as were people with higher levels of income and education, Pew said in the report issued ahead of the March 12 anniversary.

    - Cell phone second on list -The cell phone comes in a close

second to the Internet: 49 percent of mobile phone owners said it would be difcult to give up their handset, up from 43 percent in 2006. That amounts to 44 percent of all adults who say now that their cell phone would be very hard to live without.

Meanwhile landline telephones are losing favor.

Just 28 percent of landline tele-phone owners said it would be a hardship to live without this, a big drop from 48 percent in 2006. Be-cause many people have already dropped their landlines, the nding means that just 17 percent of all adults would nd their landline very hard to give up.

Pew noted the spectacular growth in use of the Web, especially since 1995. Some 87 percent of American adults use the Internet, either from a PC or mobile device, up from 14 percent in 1995.

Pew also found that Americans are using the Web more often: 71 per-cent go online on a typical day, com-pared with 29 percent in 2000.

In 1995, 42 percent of US adults had never heard of the Internet and another 21 percent had only a vague notion of what it was.

The rise of mobile device use rep-resents the biggest shift in access in recent years: 68 percent of US adults now access the Internet on a cell phone, tablet, or other mobile device, at least occasionally, Pew found.

Pew found that 90 percent of US adults have a cell phone and two-thirds of those use their device to go online. A third of cell phone owners say that their primary online access point is their phone.

Mobile access took a huge leap forward with the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, and some 58 percent of adults have a smartphone now.

    - Web is a good thing -The report found 90 percent of

Internet users say the World Wide Web has been a good thing for them personally and only six percent say it has been a bad thing.

Three out of four said it been a good thing for society, while 15 per-cent say it has been negative.

Using the Web -- browsing it, searching it, sharing on it -- has be-come the main activity for hundreds of millions of people around the globe, Pew said.

Its birthday offers an occasion to revisit the ways it has made the internet a part of Americans social lives.

Today the market for tness bands is growing well and this segment will be exploited over the next years, said Annette Zimermann, analyst at technology consultants Gartner Inc.

Sony Mobile revealed on the open-ing day of the fair its SmartBand SWR10, a bracelet that comes with

Americans would give up TV before Internet: survey

an application allowing users to log events and photographs taken during the day as well as tracking how far they walk and checking their sleep cycle.

Smart watches, connected by wire-less Bluetooth technology to the smartphone, are still trying to nd a mass market, however, said Zim-ermann. Smart watches still lack good design and functionality so up-take of those devices have been very slow, she explained.

Research house Canalys neverthe-less predicts a boom in connected bracelets and watches, with sales surpassing 17 million units this year and approaching 45 million in 2017.

Its about having an independent product that works as a standalone and does not need to be connected to your smartphone, said Archana Vidyasekar, specialist at analysts Frost & Sullivan.

I think that is going to dene the success of the market in the consum-er industry.

    - The rst elegant smartwatch -

Samsung was one of the rst heavyweights to enter the market, releasing last September its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which lets a user read text messages and emails, check online services such as the weather and make calls.

But with a lukewarm reception from critics and, according to ana-lysts, disappointing sales, Samsung launched a new version Sunday, the Gear 2, which includes a camera, TV remote control and a heart rate sen-sor.

Chinese smartphone maker Hua-wei revealed a connected watch of its own on the same day, a TalkBand, to be sold for 99 euros ($136).

Hours later, South Korean manu-facturer LG said it would launch its rst smartwatch in 2014.

Small Finnish rm Creoir says its model, Ibis, is the rst elegant smartwatch.

All the connected watches are with sports designs or geeks designs; my wife wouldnt wear that, said Creoir marketing chief Ismo Karali.

Already famous though not yet on sale, Google Glass is the showpiece of the third category of wearable de-vice: connected glasses that let you check your emails, for example, with no more than a glance.

I have been using it for about a month, but they are very intuitive, I gave it to my six-year-old daughter and she was able to gure it out within minutes, said Cameron Green head of mobile business at tech-nical standards group GS1, who has been test-ing the Google Glass.

GS1, which creates bar-codes, wants to use the glasses to let cus-tomers peer through them and see the all rel-evant information about a product.

For now, smart glass-es seem to be attracting technophiles and certain professional groups, in-dustry experts say.

For many vendors though, wearables are just the thing they have got to do as the smart-phone penetration caps and margins are under pressure, said Carolina Milanesi, analyst at con-sumer behaviour group Kantar WorldPanel.

Approached that way, it is unlikely that the vendors will focus on delivering the best experience at the best price. I still feel that 2014 will be a year of trial and error in trying to convince consum-ers that wearables are a must have, not a nice to have.

    by Katherine Haddon

KIEV, (AFP) - The US and Russia stepped up diplomatic efforts to defuse the Ukraine crisis Wednesday amid heightened ten-sions on the ground in the ashpoint area of Crimea as gunmen threatened the UN envoy.

US Secretary of State John Kerry held the rst direct talks with his Rus-sian counterpart as Washington warned Moscow it risked losing its coveted G8 place over the worst East-West crisis since the end of the Cold War.

The volatile situation in Eastern Ukraine showed little sign of easing as a dozen people were hurt as pro-Rus-sian protesters took back the regional government building in the city of Do-netsk.

And in Crimea, gunmen part-seized a Ukrainian missile facility in Cape Fiolent near Sevastopol, Ukrainian of-cials said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the European Union unveiled an aid package worth at least 11 billion euros ($15 billion) to support Ukraines new pro-EU leaders the day after the US announced a $1 billion loan guarantee pledge.

The West continued its strategy of combining support for the new govern-ment in Kiev with pressure on a deant Russia to back down.

US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew made clear it was also prepared to act ahead of a summit of G8 leaders in June.

We are on a path where I think its clear Russia cannot sit in Sochi at G8 meetings while its pursuing the poli-cies that its now pursuing, Lew said.

Lavrov and Kerry were meeting for the rst time since Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovych was oust-ed late last month after three months of protests which left nearly 100 dead.

In a bid to end the crisis, US Presi-dent Barack Obama has outlined pro-posals including Russian forces re-turning to their bases in strategically crucial Crimea, home to Russias Black Sea naval eet.

Obama also wants the deployment of international observers and the start of talks between Moscow and Kiev, a US ofcial said.

But Russia insists there are no troops from its military operating in Crimea.

If they are the self-defence forces created by the inhabitants of Crimea, we have no authority over them. They do not receive our orders, Lavrov told reporters.

Lavrov is likely to argue that Ukraines interim government is ille-gitimate and anti-constitutional, echo-ing Putins comments at a press confer-ence Tuesday.

-Western support for Ukraine-As well as

Obamas pro-posals, govern-ments includ-ing Britain are urging Lavrov to meet act-ing Ukrainian Foreign Min-ister Andriy Deshchytsya to kickstart nego-tiations.

The EUs biggest pow-ers, France and

Russia, US seek solution to Ukraine crisis at talks

French President Francois Hollande (C) speaks with US Secretary of State John Kerry (R), French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius (L) and Rus-sian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov (2nd L) at the Elysee presidential palace, March 5, 2014 (Pool/AFP, Alain Jocard).

Germany, want an exit plan from the crisis which could be discussed from Wednesday in Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said.

This would include plans for a uni-ty government, the return of Russian forces to barracks, the dissolution of extremist elements, the validity of the 2004 constitution and the importance of presidential elections.

And a mission of 35 military observ-ers will be sent to Ukraine by the Orga-nization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in a bid to help de-escalate tensions, its Secretary Gen-eral Lamberto Zannier said.

A US ofcial said Tuesday an an-nouncement on Russian sanctions is likely this week.

The EU is set to hold an emergency summit on Ukraine Thursday.

The urry of diplomacy comes the day after angry public exchanges be-tween the US and Russia which under-lined the sense of frustration on both sides.

Obama said Tuesday Russia was not fooling anyone after it claimed it had no troops operating in Crimea and Ker-ry accused it of an act of aggression after visiting the new interim govern-ment in Kiev.

Putin had earlier insisted on his right to use all available means as a last resort in Ukraine during his rst press conference since Yanukovychs ouster.

    - Crimea, east on edge -The potential for a dangerous are-

up in Crimea and eastern Ukraine was underlined Wednesday.

In Donetsk, a stronghold of ex-pres-ident Yanukovych, pro-Russian protes-tors with bloody faces forced their way past police lines to snatch back the re-gional government building from which they were ousted earlier Wednesday.

Meanwhile, gunmen part-seized a missile facility in Cape Fiolent near Sevastopol, Ukrainian ofcials said, apparently without violence.

Russian soldiers were holding some parts of the base although the mis-sile depot itself remains in Ukrainian hands, Volodymyr Bova, a defence ministry spokesman in the peninsula, told AFP.

At another missile facility in Evpa-toria on Crimeas western coast, pro-Russian demonstrators unexpectedly tried to storm a base which pro-Russian soldiers had previously taken over.

Lavrov told a press conference in Madrid that the Russian Black Sea na-val eet were under special measures of alert and control but remained in their assigned bases.

Crimea is an autonomous area within Ukraine but is located next to Russia and has a Russian ethnic majority. It is strategically vital, offering access to the Mediterranean within a days sailing.

Elsewhere on the peninsula, the situ-ation was mostly calm.

In Simferopol, the capital of Crimea, local people were watching the crisis closely.

One resident, Sergei, welcomed the presence of thousands of pro-Russian forces.

This is normal because if there were no Russian soldiers, it would be like Kiev here, exactly the same. People calmed down when the soldiers ar-rived, he said.

Another, Maria, said Ukraine was a united country which must not be di-vided.

We must live in peace, no matter what language we speak. We need the country to unite so we can live in peace -- it doesnt matter if we speak Russian or Ukrainian, she added.

by Helen ROWEPARIS, February 27, 2014 (AFP) -

Balenciaga designer Alexander Wang on Thursday served up knitwear with a dash of colour at Paris fashion while Manish Arora simply took psychedelic and turned it up several notches.

A year after making his debut for Balenciaga, one of the most illustrious names in fashion, New York wonder boy Wang, 30, said he had delved into his own knitwear background for his latest collection, continuing the pro-cess he began last season of stamping his own mark on the house.

It started with the idea of the sweat-er... almost every look has an element of knitwear, whether embroidered, whether printed or laminated, Wang

told reporters backstage. The designer said he noticed that

knitwear was quite absent while go-ing through the archives at the fash-ion house and decided to try and bring some of that vocabulary to his col-lection.

For autumn/winter 2014/15, Wang went for knit dresses with big stripes in orange and navy or purple and black, while asymmetrical jackets and coats came in mottled lilac and crimson or black and yellow with black trims.

In other looks, leg-elongating slim tted trousers with a slight are were teamed with jackets with wide faux fur collars and strips down the front.

Considered a prodigious talent by the fashion world, the designer who

was born in California to Taiwanese parents launched his own label -- a mix of relaxed chic and streetwise edge -- in 2007 when he was just 23.

His arrival at Balenciaga in late 2012 followed the departure of Nicolas Ghesquiere, considered to have made the house very much his own during his 15-year tenure.

Indias Arora, meanwhile, laid on the sporty youthfulness with a shovel in a collection characterised by colour over-load.

Hooded puffa capes came in printed waterproof techno fabric while other capes showcased Aroras signature embroi-dery.

Laplandic pom-pom hats, Peruvian circle skirts, drop-waisted Chinese workers trousers and dangly multi-chain gold jewellery all made an appearance and Aroras LED-lit ashing sneakers teamed with striped leg warmers were al-most a show in themselves.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Frenchman Guillaume Henry also brightened up his Carven collection with plenty of winter-warming colour -- with looks in peach, light blue, crimson and burgundy.

Coats and jackets came with wide belts, zip fronts and high-necked collars; skirts were short with thigh boots or long but split at the front to well above the knee.

The Paris collections move towards their mid-point on Fri-day with shows by Dior, Isabel Marant and Issey Miyake.

Nine days of ready-to-wear collections for autumn/winter 2014/15 -- featuring some 90 shows -- are due to wrap up on Wednesday.

But fashion watchers will have to wait until then for the most anticipated event of the week -- Ghesquieres debut at Louis Vuitton following the departure last year of Marc Ja-cobs.

I thought of the ultimate response to Dr. Robert Ivanys question. What makes a leader? he asked. In my head, I had a jumble of words and sentences ready to blurt out my complex deni-tion of a leader. It was an in-tricate description that prob-ably only I out of the many people in the room would have understood.

As the son of Hungarian refugees from World War 2 who moved to Ohio to escape the evil empire of com-munism, Dr. Ivany changed my denition of a leader. Dr. Ivany presided as the com-mandment of the U.S. Army War College and served as the Army Aide to President Rea-gan. He retired from the Army

    The Real Leader

with the rank of Major Gen-eral. So, where is Dr. Ivany now? He is at the University of St. Thomas. Thats right, the University of St. Thomas. Dr. Ivany became the eighth president of the University of St. Thomas and although an Army background is fairly different from a university, both require the ambitious leadership. Although Dr. Ivany uses his authority in a different way at the campus

setting from his Army life, both require the qualities of a leader: a person who has faith and character. Dr. Ivany changed the ambiance in the room with his perfect de-nition of a leader- someone who not only has a stellar and condent personality, but also devotion.

As a high school student, sometimes my faith gets pushed to the corner, as I have college applications and after-

school activities taking up my time. Theres not a day where my faith is not tested, but it gives me a greater opportunity to stay true to my own values and build my own character- the person I want to become. Dr. Ivany reminded us that our beliefs make us the leader that we want to become. Besides, if a leader does not have their own faith in hand, how can one expect them to lead oth-ers to the top?Dr. Robert Ivany in his ofce.

Dr. Robert Ivany speaks with the YLDP students.

Performance in Zoyas film will surprise my fans: Ranveer

    Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh

MUMBAI: Actor Ranveer Singh says he is excited to be working with Zoya Akhtar and his performance in the lm will surprise ev-eryone.

I am super excited to work with Zoya as I believe she`s one of the most talented direc-tors in the industry. Moreover it`s a part that really pushes me as an actor and gives me a chance to showcase an aspect of my performance that will surprise my fans, he said.

Ranveer plays the main lead in the lm, which is reported-ly titled `Dil Dhadakne Do`.

Do I Have to Get Obama Care by March End?Despite what you may have heard, you cant be arrested or thrown in jail if you dont have health insurance in Texas. You can, however, be forced to pay a tax penalty if you arent enrolled in a health insurance plan by March 31, 2014.To avoid the penalty, you must either obtain qualied health coverage or prove your eligibility for an exception. What Qualies as Coverage?

If you have any of the follow-ing types of health coverage, you wont have to pay a penalty: An individual insurance plan, whether purchased on your own or through Health-Care.gov, the exchange serv-ing Texas A plan (including COBRA or a retiree plan) provided by your employer Medicare, Medicaid, or coverage under the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

TRICARE (coverage from the U.S. military) Coverage under a veterans health care program Coverage through the Peace Corps

If you arent sure whether your current plan qualies, talk to the plan provider. What Doesnt Qualify as Coverage?

Some types of health plans dont meet the requirements for coverage under the Af-fordable Care Act (Obama Care). These include vision insurance, dental insurance, workers compensation, coverage that is limited to a specic condition, and plans

that offer only discounted medical services. Are You Exempt From the Obama Care Penalty?

Even if you dont have insur-ance, you wont have to pay the penalty if you qualify for one of the following exemp-tions: You are uninsured for fewer than three months of the year. You prove that you cant afford coverage -- that is, pre-miums for a bronze policy cost more than 8% of your earnings. You dont have to le a federal income tax return be-cause your income is too low. You qualify for Medicaid under the new income limits established by the Affordable Care Act but, because Texas has not expanded Medicaid eligibility, you cannot take advantage of these rules. You are a member of a fed-erally recognized Indian tribe. You are a member of a health care sharing ministry. You are a member of a rec-ognized religion that objects to health insurance. You are in the United States illegally. You are incarcerated.

You may be eligible for an exemption under other circumstances, as well -- for instance, if you can show that obtaining coverage would subject you to serious nancial hardship. Qualifying nancial difculties may in-clude homelessness, eviction, domestic violence, death of a loved one, a medical emer-gency, or a natural disaster. In addition, on December 19, 2013, the Obama adminis-tration decided that people whose insurance plans were canceled in 2013 qualify for a hardship exemption from the law, for the year 2014 only. You can apply for a nancial hardship exemption at Health-Care.gov.

Global sh stocks are declining and cannot provide a sustain-able source of omega-3 fatty acids. An alternate source of this valuable product thus is a necessity to bridge the gap be-tween production and demand. Worldwide, consumption of omega-3 PUFAs, estimated at 123.8 thousand metric tons worth US$2.3 billion in 2013, is forecast to be 134.7 thousand metric tons valued at US$2.5 billion in 2014. By 2020, it is projected that demand for ome-ga-3 PUFAs globally will reach 241 thousand metric tons with a value of US$4.96 billion, there-by posting a volume CAGR of almost 10% and a value CAGR of 11.6% between 2013 and 2020.

Omega-3 fatty acids eicosa-pentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) provide signicant health ben-ets like prevention of athero-sclerosis, thrombosis, arthritis, cancers, etc. and this has led to an increased consumption as dietary supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are found in animals, transgenic plants, fungi and many micro-organisms but are typically ex-tracted from fatty sh, putting

additional pressures on global sh stocks.

Although the conventional source of EPA and DHA is ma-rine sh oil, however, recent re-search have proved that higher amount of EPA and DHA can be produced by algae. When pro-duced from algae, is a vegetar-ian source of docosahexaenoic acid, DHA that is a long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid and is important for brain, eye and heart health throughout the lifecycle. Other applica-tions include infant formulas, products for pregnant and nurs-ing women, food and beverage products and dietary supple-ments. EPA is a polyunsaturat-ed fatty acid (PUFA) that acts as a precursor for prostaglan-din-3 (which inhibits platelet aggregation), thromboxane-3, and leukotriene-5 groups.

Health benets of Algae produced Omega-3 fatty ac-ids:

Omega-3 fatty acids represent an important structural compo-nent of human cell membranes, particularly neuronal cells. The consumption of EPA and DHA supplements has been shown to prevent cardiovascular, nervous system and inammatory con-ditions Regular consumption of -3 fatty acids can help reduce the risk of hypertension, throm-bosis, myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmias. This occurs because -3 fatty acids increase the high-density lipo-protein/low-density lipoprotein (HDL/LDL) ratio and decrease the total cholesterol/HDL ratio. Omega-3 fatty acids have also demonstrated positive effects on brain function and the ner-vous system. In pregnant wom-en, the adequate intake of EPA and DHA is crucial for healthy development of the fetal brain. In infants, arachidonic acid (ARA), an omega-6 fatty acid, and DHA are also required for normal growth and functional

development. Interestingly, in-creased consumption of DHA may also diminish the severity of depression and schizophre-nia. Immuno modulatory ef-fects have been observed when -3 fatty acids were used in the treatment of inammatory conditions such as rheuma-toid arthritis, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, asthma, lupus and cystic bro-sis. Children ingesting Omega 3 more than once a week had a lower probability of suffer-ing from asthma. Increasing the levels of DHA and EPA in patients with rheumatoid ar-thritis and ulcerative colitis has also been found to reduce pain and improve conditions. There is currently therefore a large demand for microalgae in the nutraceutical and pharmaceuti-cal industry due to their health-promoting effects. Microalgal-derived PUFA, such as ARA and DHA are added as forti-cations to infant formulae-an industry that is worth $10 bil-lion per annum alone. To date, microalgal extracts can be found in many face and skin care products, e.g. anti-aging cream, refreshing or regenera-tive care products, sun cream, emollient and anti-irritant in peelers. Dermochlorella is ac-tually extracted from Chlorella vulgaris, which can stimulate collagen synthesis in skin sup-porting tissue regeneration and wrinkle reduction. Protulines is a protein-rich extract from Arthrospira (Spirulina), which helps combat early skin aging, exerting a tightening effect and preventing wrinkle formation.

Algal strains rich in Ome-ga-3 fatty acids:

Microalgae can supply ome-ga-3 fatty acids at high con-centrations. Species of Crypth-ecodinium, Thraustochytrium, Ulkenia and Schizochytrium are rich the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, while species of Phaeo-dactylum, Chlorella, Monodus,

and Nannochloropsis are rich in EPA. Crypthecodinium cohnii is a heterotrophic algal species that is currently used to produce the DHA used in many infant formulas. Research efforts have revealed that approximately 50% Thraustochytrium aure-ums total fatty acids are DHA. Phaeodactylum tricornutum is a high EPA-producing algal spe-cies with EPA comprising 30-40% of its total fatty acids when grown using optimum culture conditions. Monodus species are photoautotrophic algae that can produce high levels of EPA, but the dependence on light re-sults in low cell densities mak-ing them unfavorable species to use in the industrial production of EPA. The microalga Pavlova lutheri is a potential source of economically valuable docosa-hexaenoic and eicosapentaeno-ic acids.

Over the past decade, al-gae biotechnology has grown steadily into a global industry with increasing numbers of entrepreneurs attempting to utilize its biochemical diver-sity for a wide array of applica-tions. There are approximately 40,000 algal species, only a few thousand strains are kept in collections, a few hundred are investigated for chemical content and approximately half a dozen are cultivated in indus-trial quantities.

Therefore, continued isolation and screening of microalgae is required, as well as more in depth studies into algal physiol-ogy, biochemistry and genetics. Meanwhile the processes for al-gae cultivation, harvesting and oil extraction need to be fur-ther improved in efciency and costs. As omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most valuable prod-ucts from microalgae, they are likely to be the game-changer towards large-scale economical microalgae cultivation that will catalyze the production of other important algal bioproducts.

    1) When can I nd out the sex of my baby?

It should be possible to tell the sex in the fourth to fth month of pregnancy. To check for fetal anatomy and to assess well-being and growth are the main indications for ultrasound. All other ultrasounds are up to the physicians discretion.

    2) Will I have an episiotomy during my delivery?

An episiotomy is performed in an emergent situation or if the physician feels this will prevent a larger laceration. This decision is based individually

Top 10 Women Health Care Questionson the particular circumstance and is not a routine procedure.

    3) Will my doctor be there for my delivery?

You should nd out if your doctor is in a call group, how often (your) doctor is on call and have that discussion with them.

    4) What types of hysterec-tomy are there and which one is best for me?

There is vaginal hysterec-tomy, abdominal hysterectomy, laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopic to-tal or supra cervical hysterecto-my (leaving the cervix behind) and robotic hysterectomy. All of these can be performed with or without removing the tubes and ovaries. The mode of sur-gery depends on uterine size, history of prior surgery, body habitus, and presence of pre-cursor cancer cells or cancer itself. Blood loss, duration of hospital stay and anesthesia time are all important things to discuss with your surgeon.

    5) What is an induction?

An induction of labor is giv-ing a patient medication to soften or ripen the cervix and induce uterine contractions and

labor. Most doctors will of-fer this about a week after the due date. Most doctors would not do an induction prior to 39 weeks unless there is fetal or maternal indication.

    6) Will an epidural give me chronic back pain?

There have been no random-ized controlled studies showing that an epidural causes chronic back pain.

    7) How much caffeine can I have if I am pregnant?

Moderate caffeine consump-tion (less than 200mg/day) does not appear to be a major contributing factor in miscar-riage or preterm birth.

    8) Is vaginal discharge nor-mal?

Any discharge that is con-sidered abnormal from a pa-tients normal baseline should be evaluated by a physician to distinguish what it is. This can be done either by wet mount or culture. Self-treatment is not recommended.

    9) What is the best steriliza-tion technique?

Hysteroscopic sterilization is the least invasive however

various methods of laparos-copy, postpartum sterilization and sterilization at the time of cesarean delivery are offered.

    9) What is considered a heavy period?

A period lasting more than 7 days or more than 80 ml blood loss during one cycle is consid-ered abnormal. The best deni-tion is when it is heavier than a

patients baseline.10) When do I take my

daughter to her rst OB-GYN appointment?

The rst appointment ideally should be between the age of 13 and 15. Discussion about the HPV vaccine and adoles-cent physical and mental issues can be addressed at this time as not to be missed.

Out at sea, gentle waves provide power for thou-sands of homes. In cit-ies, danceoor moves generate electricity for nightclubs. In the countryside, hikers use leg power to recharge their phones.

It is an alluring goal of clean, re-liable power free from geo-political risks -- and scientists in the United States said Tuesday it lies within reach, thanks to a smart way to har-vest energy called tribo-electricity.

Researchers at the Georgia Insti-tute of Technology said they had built a simple prototype device that converts stop-start movement into power.

Waves, walking and dancing -- even rainfall, computer keys or urban trafc -- could one day be harnessed to drive sensors, mobile gadgets or even electricity plants, they contend.

Zhong Lin Wang, a professor of materials science and engineering, described the invention a break-through.

Our technology can be used for large-scale energy harvesting, so that the energy we have wasted for centuries will be useful, he told AFP by email.

Tribo-electric is a modern term with ancient roots -- from the Greek word for rub.

Its electricity is created from friction between two substances causing a charge of electrons to be transferred from one to the other.

It commonly happens, for in-stance, when plastic-soled shoes are in contact with a nylon carpet, causing the snap of static discharge when ones hand touches a metal doorknob.

Because tribo-electric is so un-predictable, it has been generally shunned as a power source.

The preferred method has been magnetic induction -- a turbine driven by nuclear- or fossil-pow-ered steam or water.

But, in a new study published in the journal Nature Communica-tions, Wangs team said they had overcome key hurdles to convert-ing a haphazardly-generated elec-trical charge into current.

Their prototype comprises a disc about 10 centimetres (four inches) across, designed to show the poten-tial from a small, portable genera-tor moved by ambient energy.

Inside are two circular sheets of material, one an electron donor and the other an electron receiv-er, brought together through ro-tary movement.

If the sheets are separated, one then holds an electrical charge iso-lated by the gap between them.

Sandwiched between the two discs is a third disc with electrodes, which bridges the gap and helps a small current to ow.

At a top speed of 3,000 revolu-tions per minute, the device gener-ated 1.5 watts.

This gave it an energy efciency of 24 percent, three times greater than piezoelectric, the previously best source of mechanical electric-ity harvesting -- and as efcient as magnetic-induction turbines.

Tribo-electric, the buzz-word of the future?
