YÜÉÅ g{x ctáàÉÜËá Wxá~ want you to do, put a beach chair and your Bible in your car and drive down to the beach. Take the beach chair and the Bible to the water's edge, sit down in the beach chair, and put the Bible in your lap. Open the Bible; the wind will rifle the pages, but finally the open Bible will come to rest on a page. Look down at the page and read the first thing you see. That will be your answer, that will tell you what to do." A year later the businessman went back to the pastor and brought his wife and children with him. The man was in a new custom- tailored suit, his wife in a mink coat, the chil-dren shining. The businessman pulled an envelope stuffed with money out of his pocket and gave it to the pastor as a dona on in thanks for his advice. The pastor recognized the benefactor, and was curious. "You did as I suggested?" he asked. "Absolutely," replied the businessman. "You went to the beach?" "Absolutely." "You sat in a beach chair with the Bible in your lap?" "Absolutely." "You let the pages rifle un l they stopped?" "Absolutely." "And what were the first words you saw?" "Chapter 11."

#4 – A nun who works for a local home health care agency was out making her rounds when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it there was a sta on just down the street. She walked to the sta on to borrow a can with enough gas to start the car and drive to the sta on for a fill up. The a endant regre ully told her that the only can he owned had just been loaned out, but if she would care to wait he was sure it would be back shortly. Since the nun was on the way to see a pa ent she decid-ed not to wait and walked back to her car. A er looking through her car for something to carry to the sta on to fill with gas, she spo ed a bedpan she was taking to the pa-

ent. Always resourceful, she carried it to the sta on, filled it with gasoline, and carried it back to her car. As she was pouring the gas into the tank of her car two men walked by. One of them turned to the other and said: "Now that is what I call faith!"

#5 - Two friends met in the street. One looked sad and al-most on the verge of tears. The other man said, "Hey my friend, how come you look like the whole world has caved in?" The sad fellow said, "Let me tell you. Three weeks ago, an uncle died and le me 50-thousand dollars." "That's not bad at all...!" "Hold on, I'm just ge ng started. Two weeks ago, a cousin I never knew kicked-the-bucket and le me 95-thousand, tax-free to boot." "Well, that's great! I'd like that." "Last week, my grandfather passed away. I inherited al-most a million." "So why are so glum?" "This week - nothing!" Fr. Murphy

Dear Parishioners,

In the coming weeks you will be seeing a lot of construc-on ac vity on our property. I am happy to announce that

we have the full approval of Bishop Estevez to begin civil work on the large drainage ditch around the western and southern sides of the church. My predecessor Fr. Bill Mooney wisely saved up more than enough money in our savings to address this project. The contract to remove the old tree stumps, excavate the muck in the drainage area, place con-crete culverts, bring in fill dirt, and replacing with sod was awarded to Kevin Partel, a local contractor. Mr. Partel is a parishioner of the Cathedral-Basilica parish and has yearly headed up the parish’s annual fes val on the Shrine’s grounds. The cost to this work is $325,000. We had four bids for this project.

The reason for this project is to prepare for the future ex-pansion of the exis ng parish church. As of now, based on the fact that we have a large drainage ditch, we are prevent-ed from expanding the church. The ditch has to be filled. There is no other way to address the expansion of the church. The church, constructed in 1981, was designed for future ex-pansion. The western and southern side walls of the church are not load bearing walls. They were designed specifically for future expansion.

If you have any ques ons about this project, you are wel-come to talk to Guy Guernon who is the head of our parish Building Commi ee. His e-mail is GGhomes@ Reagan.com.

And now some funnies:

#1 – While walking up the front lane to his house, Pastor Nor-ris of First Chris an Church heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly wilted his collar. His five-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead bird and were giving it a Chris-

an funeral. The burial spot was dug, and the minister’s son was selected to say the appropriate prayer. So, with dignity he intoned his version of what he thought his father always said, “Glory to the Faaaather, and to the Sooooonnn…and into the hole you goooo.”

#2 – An exasperated mother, whose son was always ge ng into mischief, finally asked him, “Tommy, how do you expect to get into heaven someday?” The boy thought about it over and explained, “Well, I ‘ll just run in and out and in and out and keep slamming the gate un l St. Peter says, “For heaven’s sake, Tommy, come in or stay out.”

#3 – A businessman was in a great deal of trouble. His busi-ness was failing, he had put everything he had into the busi-ness, he owed everybody it was so bad he was even contem-pla ng suicide. As a last resort he went to a pastor and poured out his story of tears and woe. When he had finished, the pastor said, "Here's what I

BISHOP’S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL

SAINT JOHN FISHER (1469-1535) AND SAINT THOMAS MORE (1477-1535) From Robert Bolt’s classic A Man for All Seasons to Show me’s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears himself s ll: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity, remarried widower and affec onate father deligh ng in a lively house-hold—four children, a pet monkey, even a paid jester! And challenges s ll: humanist-reformer, yet champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul II named him Patron of Statesmen and Poli cians, ci ng More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government service, on behalf of the poor-est and most marginalized people of his me, as well as his promo on of educa on for all sectors of society. More’s de-cision for principle over poli cs, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Alone among England’s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and repudia on of the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a car-dinal, Henry thundered: “Don’t bother sending Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? Isn’t a right conscience worth the pain of standing alone?
