Damballa, the father serpent

CREATION STORY

• Damballa, created all the oceans and seas of the earth.

• As he moved through the endless waters, his 7,000 coils formed great valleys and mountains on the new earth.

•He brought forth stars and planets in the heavens, and the sun and the moon.

•He created different metals from the heat and sent forth lightning bolts which formed sacred rocks.

•When all of this was done, Damballa shed his skin which caused …

•great flooding on earth, but when it was done, the sun shone brightly over the waters and created the first rainbow.

•The rainbow was called Aida-Wedo.

Aida-Wedo, the Rainbow

Damballa fell in love with the beautiful rainbow and made her his wife.

Damballa and Aida-Wedo created the first city of Ifé. It was the source of all power, all creations and spirituality.

The first of the loa, or gods, descended to Ifé to live.

•Damballah and Aida-Wedo instructed men and women how to procreate and how to make blood sacrifices.

•Only then could they become the spirit

• By making blood sacrifices, they also received the knowledge of the Father Serpent (Damballah)

• “Bondye” the supreme god is unreachable to mortals.

• Those who practice Voodoo communicate with lesser spirit gods called “Loa” or “Misté”

• Loas are the way for the Vodouns to call upon to bring their will to Bondye.

• The lesser gods also have their own powers that can help mortals accomplish tasks.

is the main loa who provides the connection between mortals and bondye.
