New organisational structure announced for Vodafone Malta
Published on Monday, 15, October, 2012 at 15:10 in Malta News | No Comments
Vodafone Malta is pleased has announced some new changes to its organisational structure. The changes have been
implemented to provide additional focus on the different segments of the business and to better support its business
strategy in ever changing market conditions. It also brings Malta in line with the Vodafone global organisational
model. Vodafone’s Marketing and Commercial departments have now been restructured into three sections namely the
Enterprise and Wholesale Unit, Consumer Business Unit and Commercial Operations unit. These three verticals are
represented directly on the Company’s Executive Committee by their respective Heads.
Joseph Cuschieri has recently relinquished his position of Chief Commercial Officer to pursue his career further by
setting up his own advisory services practice, something which he has been planning for some time. To this effect, the
Enterprise and Wholesale Business Unit will temporarily be headed by Joseph Cuschieri who held the position of
Chief Commercial Officer since October 2007. He was previously Vodafone’s Head of Public Policy and Affairs.
Mr. Cuschieri will be working full time with Vodafone Malta until May 2013. “I am delighted and very excited that
after 7 years of service with a global company like Vodafone, I am moving on to set up my own business. Looking
back at the last 7 years, I feel proud to have been an agent of change and a key contributor to Vodafone’s success and

market leadership. I am also pleased that through my career move, I have created space for local talent to grow and
take over senior roles within the Company.”
Mr.Cuschieri’s affiliation with Vodafone is not likely to end next May. Apart from being engaged with Vodafone in an
advisory role immediately after 31 May 2013, he has also been appointed Director on the Board of Arabia Mobile
Services which is an MVNO operating in Milan. The company is owned by Vodafone Egypt and provides mobile
telephony services for the Egyptian community in Italy.
The Consumer Business Unit will be headed by Sandro Pisani. Mr. Pisani has returned to Vodafone Malta after an 18
month stint with Vodafone Egypt where he sat on the Executive Committee as Strategy Director. During this time Mr.
Pisani was also CEO and Director of Arabia Mobile Service. Before moving to Egypt, Mr. Pisani had been for 10
years with Vodafone Malta and occupied a variety of roles including Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Technology.
“After spending time abroad, I am really glad to be back to Vodafone Malta. Every time I move abroad for work, I
always come back refreshed and looking forward for a new challenge, and this time round it’s not different. Leading
this Unit means that I will be able to focus more on our consumers needs and provide our consumers with offers and
services that truly meet their needs,” said Sandro Pisani.
Michael Coney has been promoted from the position of Customer Operations Manager to Head of Commercial
Operations unit. Mr. Coney has a Corporate finance background and has been working with Vodafone Malta for the
past 8 years two of which were spent in the UK as Commercial Marketing Manager working with Vodafone Group.
Mr Coney, who will now form part of the Company’s Executive Committee, stated “I feel privileged to have been
given the opportunity to head such an important function in our organisation. The function’s role is to ensure that the
Customer has the best possible experience in all interactions with Vodafone. This restructuring is an affirmation that
our customers are at the heart of all our activities.”
Balesh Sharma, CEO of Vodafone Malta, described these changes as very exciting opportunities for a good number of
Vodafone’s team members. “These people are all role models who have concentrated heavily on their career
development,” he said. “Over the years they have been very open to many changes and opportunities that Vodafone
provides to further their knowledge and experience. It is truly my pleasure to see how people can move from one
company to another within Vodafone and how ultimately local talent is always appreciated and valued.”

scheme spans over two years.
As part of the project, three educational TV spots were also produced and funded by
Vodafone. They show how the company’s products and technology are making life easier for

Introduction
The Samsung Mini 2 comes in at the lower end of Samsung’s range replacing
the original Samsung Galaxy but is not Samsung’s entry level handset. The
phone is a solid handset which fits snugly in your hand with the rounded shape
complementing your palm. The phone is equipped with the well-known home
button and the touch-sensitive menu and back keys which we found highly
responsive.
Operating System and Display
The Galaxy Mini 2 screen lights up providing a bright and clear display, with
text easy to read - more than acceptable for a smartphone in the lower price
bracket. Slightly disappointing the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 runs on Android
2.3.6 Gingerbread and not Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which could be a
deciding factor for some customers when it comes to choosing a new phone.
Looking past this, the single-core, 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM in
the Galaxy Mini 2 does a good job of running Android smoothly.

Hardware
Below the volume switch there’s a microSD card slot allowing you to expand on
the average 4GB of internal storage and thanks to the handy side-access, you
can swap between cards without having to remove the battery or even the rear
cover. The bottom of the phone has a centralised microUSB port and a pin hole
for the microphone, while at the back there’s a 3.15MP camera and a small,
slightly raised speaker grill next to it.
Battery life and connectivity
With a 1,300mAh battery the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 battery life is pretty good,
as you’d expect from a phone with a single-core processor and an average sized
screen getting a full days use is easy for the Galaxy Mini 2. You can even
stretch two days if you are a little more careful with your usage.
Through the phone you are able to set up a wireless hot-spot, allowing you to
share your network’s data connection with other devices, such as a tablet or
laptop.
The Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 was made available for review by Vodafone Malta
and is available at their stores.

Melita tests new broadband link to Milan
Melita is in the final stages of testing a new fibre link that connects Malta to Milan, its latest investment in broadband infrastructure.
There are considerable opportunities in the business market
The project, combined with a planned state-of-the-art customer relationship platform and an enhanced business services offering, will involve a total investment of €10 million over the next five years, Melita chief executive Andrei Torriani told The Times Business.
Melita has teamed up with US-headquartered provider Level 3, one of only six Tier I operators in the world, to access high quality broadband closer to source. Level 3 delivers all global content for Netflix and Apple through its own content delivery network.
Mr Torriani explained Level 3 boasts a world-leading fibre infrastructure which connects major cities and technology points from Milan across the globe. The chief executive promises Melita’s household and business customers will experience a quantum leap in broadband quality.
“We at Melita believe we are helping to fulfil Malta’s Smart Island vision and help the country meet the EU’s digital agenda targets for high speed broadband,” Mr Torriani explained. “Those targets cannot be reached without the right type of international connectivity. That has not been forthcoming to Malta for some time and we decided to make the investment to bring better quality of service and interconnectivity to local customers.”
CLIENT: MELITA DIRECT MEDIUM: TIMESOFMALTA.COM DATE: 18 OCTOBER 2012
Malta’s three broadband providers, including Melita, all have links to Sicily, mostly for geographical reasons.
Melita is currently routing traffic through its new link and Mr Torriani said tests are showing significant improvements in quality and marked reductions in data loss. The development will contribute to Melita’s positioning as a broadband provider for businesses like online gaming and trading organisations which are particularly sensitive to data transmission quality, Mr Torriani added. Households, he said, will enjoy better download and upload speeds and quality.
“On average, most households have more than one connection and it is a major challenge to find growth in that segment,” Mr Torriani pointed out. “But there are considerable opportunities in the business market. We are confident we can bring added value by ‘obtaining’ our internet closer to source, from a premier operator, with fewer in-between players.”
In the longer-term, stronger broadband and connectivity will enable Melita to deliver more content over online platforms. Customers’ increasing demand for video, gaming, and peer-to-peer interaction requires higher speeds.
More than a year ago, Melita upgraded its customers to 15 Mbps for a trial period and found that most customers opted to keep those speeds when the trial window closed. More than half of Malta’s broadband customers now use 10 Mbps. Subscribers to Melita’s network on speeds of 10 Mbps account for 76 per cent of its total customer base.
Meanwhile, Melita has turned to another Tier I provider, Amdocs, for the delivery of a technologically advanced customer relationship management solution that will automate a host of customer services.
“It has become a major challenge for any telecommunications company to service customers, particularly as more people with various bundles make enquiries over the phone. Agents have to be constantly trained to handle a never-ending list of products, features and issues,” Mr Torriani said. “It was very important for us to find an end-to-end provider that could handle a complex customer service environment where there are users of converged services. This new platform will eliminate much of the complexity involved in calls to the customer care centre.”
Automated services will see customers gaining instant access to many features and options, including billing queries, technical issue resolution, information on mobile phone functionality and self-help videos. This new technology will support Melita in its bid to enhance the standardisation of the customer experience so that subscribers obtain information in a systematic way with reduced waiting times.
Mr Torriani was keen to point out that the implementation of the new CRM platform would not involve redundancies. Rather, it would give the company an opportunity to offer new challenges across the business to team members under a programme for personal development and growth. It was also a way for Melita to retain shared competencies.
Externally, next week, Melita will roll out several bundles aimed at business customers, featuring enhanced broadband offerings and services, many of which leverage the capabilities of the new fibre link.
“Melita has been a driver of change in the market not only for businesses and customers, but also for the telecommunciations landscape in Malta. We are happy with the results we are getting but we are not going to rest on our laurels. We are going to continue to invest in broadband because we see this as an opportunity for growth for Malta,” Mr Torriani said.

Bank of Valletta appoints green leaders
Article published on 19 October 2012
Bank of Valletta has appointed 60 staff members as its green leaders, who will
act as “ambassadors” to promote an environmentally-friendly culture,
complementing the bank’s ongoing green initiatives.
The bank is committed to minimising the environmental impact of its business,
to be pro-active in seeking energy-efficient solutions and to use alternative
sources of energy wherever feasible.
The green leaders will identify ways in which bank practices can become
greener, but just as importantly will encourage staff and customers to realise that
they can each make a contribution towards reducing waste and saving energy.
To launch this initiative, a one-day training event was held at the Bird Park in
Burmarrad on separate days for the green leaders, explaining how we as
individuals use energy at work and at home, and underlines the importance of
energy conservation.
The bank has set itself challenging targets for reducing its carbon footprint, and
by 2013 is trying to reduce its energy consumption by a fifth through a
combination of PV panels and more energy-saving air-conditioning units, more
efficient lighting, changes to IT systems, etc. It also has a comprehensive waste
management programme.
