Worksheet 1. Reading: Oldest College Graduate
Read the passage and then answer the questions on the next page.
Oldest College Graduate
In May 2007, many thousands of graduates throughout the
country received their college diplomas. At Fort Hays State
University in Kansas, there was a unique graduating senior:
Nola Ochs, a 95-year-old great-grandmother.
Ms. Ochs graduated from high school in 1929, but she didn’t start college
until almost 50 years later, after her husband had died. Until then, she had
been living and working on the family farm and raising her four sons. After
the boys grew up, she attended her first college class, about agribusiness,
the business of farming. She liked the college campus so much that she
enrolled in many more classes.
In a radio interview with National Public Radio just before graduation she
said, “I’ve taken lots of history classes, civilization classes, composition
classes, public speaking and computer classes.” She has been writing her
college papers on her laptop. In fact, she has written over 100 papers. Her
bachelor’s degree is in general subjects with a major in history.
Ms. Ochs has accomplished a great deal, and says she is very proud of her
achievements. But she is most proud of her family: three living sons, 13
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. One of her granddaughters, 21-
year-old Alexandra Ochs, attended the university at the same time and
graduated with her.
About the future? Ms. Ochs – the oldest person who has ever graduated from
college -- says she would like to get a job on a cruise ship that goes around
the world.

Worksheet 4. Reading: A Book Review
Read the book review. Then answer the questions on the next page.
A Book Review
Richard Horne has written a book called 101 Things to Do Before
You Die (published by Bloomsbury, ©2004). This is a list of
activities and accomplishments that the author thinks will enrich his life, and
maybe your life too. The book is more than a list, though. There are
suggestions about how to accomplish each goal. There’s a page after each
activity where the reader checks off an activity when she or he completes
it. There’s a place to write down notes.
The author’s list is personal. He says that he wants to experience certain
things in his life, not just dream about them. Here are some things he wants
to say during his lifetime:
1. I have won an important award, trophy, or prize.
2. I have learned to play a musical instrument.
3. I have gone up in a hot air balloon.
4. I have stayed in a five-star hotel.
5. I have visited every country.
6. I have been present when my country won the World Cup.
7. I have learned another language.
8. I have read the greatest books ever written.
9. I have sold all my junk on eBay and made a profit.
10. I have reached 100 years of age.
Perhaps the reader wants to do these things, too.
This book appears in bookstores in the “humor” section because it is written
in a humorous way. However, there is also a message in the book: it is to
focus on doing the things that you want to do in life, and actually do them.
He believes that readers will be happy as they check off each
accomplishment and can say, “I have finally accomplished this!”
World Cup = the most important international competition in football (called “soccer”
in the U.S.A.) which is held every four years in a different country
eBay = an online website where people buy and sell things worldwide
