Why Business Ethics? As Judges on VTV1s Key to Success show(Chiakhoathanhcong) our role is simple. We examine the con-testant, to find out the reasons for the proposed solution to their case. Then, wejudgewith arguments. Mr.
Vo Tau Long (CEO IBM Vietnam), Ms. Ngo Thanh Thuy (Director ANZ Bank) & me add some advice. Ourquestions and comments are often challenging: we are not Judges to give the contestants an easy ride.
In fact, we are looking for is someone with a CEO State of Mind. That is, a person who exhibits lea-dership qualities, knows the actuality, has done the homework, dares to be different, and can turn a clear visioninto a practical & profitable reality. Some contestants in the 12 shows I was in sofar, displayed these qualities. Most notably, Ms. Tran Que Trang, who we awarded with the title CEO of the Year. She has it ALL.
What in my opinion made her stand out from all the others, was her keen sense of business ethics. Sheknows what is acceptable, and what is not. How not to surrender to the temptation of corruption. She knows
that caring for your personnel is equally important as caring for yourcustomers. She understands that ca- ring for the environment is not a po-pular trend, as some seem to think, its a duty for all who carry responsibi-lity for running a company. Her attitu- de comes from her ability to look atreality from different sides. Ms. Que Trang showed us that she is a leader
whose goal is NOT to get rich fast, but to deliver great service to custo-mers and employees alike. She doesnt go for the contract, she focuses on thepotential longterm business relations- hip. And finally, she convinced us thatshe can be tough when needed. She is not trying to win a popularity contest.
So what IS business ethics? It starts with an awareness of the impact ofones decisions on the world. It conti- nues with taking full responsibility forthe consequences of these decisions, and demanding that all involvedemployees, customers, suppliers, stockholders, etc.accept the right-ness of taking responsibility. Compa- nies, like nations, have a longterm res-ponsibility. The impact of CEO-level decisions may be felt for many years. In the case of the environment, even hundreds of years. We are responsiblefor doing decent business now, and making sure we will not leave the da-mage and disaster to our children and grandchildren to take care of. Leaders should not try to become popular,or place securing their chair, personal gain or winning elections above taking their responsibilities. That isunethical. This means that ethical leaders can be kind, but also ruthless in the pursuit of a solution that is bene-ficial for all concerned, and for the environment. Business ethics requires sacrifices, and withstanding short-term gain and temptations. A remarkably good article on Wikipedia will tell you more.
The recession is not the result of failing economics. Its the result of unethical behavior displayed by agroup of business men who didnt care about anyone or anythingjust about filling their own pockets. Intere-sted in how this works? See the new movie Wall StreetMoney Never Sleeps. My personal belief is that awa-reness of & applying business ethics will truly boost Vietnams economy.
I hereby declare 2011 the Vietnam Year of Business Ethics.

Exploring Dak Nong ProvinceMy friend Nguyen Quang Ngoc, Director of Fresh Green Earth (FGE), owns 5 patents for his inventions to improveagriculture. Before he moved to HCMC he lived and worked for several years in Dak Nong. This new province was partof Dak Lak, in the Western Highlands. Here farmers grow coffeebeans, pepper, tea and khoai lang tuy duc.
One year ago Ngoc invited me to visit Dak Nong Province, but our agendas didnt match until a few days ago. Alt-hough there is lots of construction going on (as in its capital Gia Nghia) there are major concerns. One of those is the
preservation of the Dak Nong Forest. Right now, there is 65,000 ha left. But every year many hectars are lost due to pe-ople illegally cutting trees. A natural forest is not just a collection of trees. It is the habitat of a wide variety of plants, flo-wers, animals and insects. It is nature at its richest, after 1,000s of years. And: the forests of planet earth are our lungs. They create oxygen, and without oxygen we simply cant breathe. Dak Nong Forest is a Vietnamese lung.As ForestSupervisor, Mr. Le Van Tuong spends his life studying and preserving the forest. He knows all about its unique diversity.Although we talked about many agricultural investment opportunities, main concern was that this must not lead tofurther destruction of the forest. However, many people mistakenly believe the trees will last forever. To produce 3 kilosof pepper, one tree is cut: its branches are used to make sticks for the pepper to grow on. Mr Ngoc has invented an alter-native. It works better than the wooden sticks, is cheaper, lasts longer and makes cutting trees completely unnecessary.Development of Dak Nong needs a close cooperation between the science of Mr. Tuong, and the hi-tech of Mr. Ngoc.

dominates the landscape. Left to right: Mr.Ngoc, LH, and Mr. Le Van Tuong, Forest
Supervisor and forest expert since 28 years.

I confess: I like jazz. In Saigon, Tran Manh Tuan is the Master. When I have achance I visit his club Jazz n Sax. Tuan knows his classics: from Charlie Parkerto Vietnamese folk songs. He puts his own stamp on them & makes them new.
