Who is Vivian Maier? Its a question thats oten been repeated

since her work fir st captured the public eye. As secretive as VivianMaier was in lie, in death her mystery has only deepened. With-

out the creator to reveal her motives and her crat, we are let to piece together

the lie and intent o an artist based on scraps o evidence, with no way to gain

definitive answers.

What remains, however, is what is most important: Maiers photographs. This

book is intended to answer the nagging question o who Vivian Maier really was

by showing her as she saw herselthrough her own sel-portraits. A tradition

with an ancient vintage, a sel-portrait is a unique conession by an artist. It tells

us both how they view themselves, as well as how they perceive the world around

them. By exploring these pictures, I hope that others who share my appreciation

or Maiers work can gain insight rega rding who the mysterious person responsi-ble or these iconic images really was.
