Research Interests

Integrating Technology into educational classrooms has been and is an area of emphasis and research. From beginning with the use of the Apple I computer and the RadioShack TRS-80 in classroom settings to the use of the Commodore 64 computer to write a doctoral dissertation, computers are a powerful educational tool for me. The Intel Teach to the Future curriculum is one way that this technology integration is accomplished now in ESU's computer classrooms. In addition, handheld computers, especially the Palm Operating System, have allowed schools to integrate technology and move it into the hands of students. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are now a part of automobiles, airplanes, personal devices and rapidly moving into the schools. All of these areas are topics of research interest to me.

Teacher Education in the areas of observation and conferencing has been an additional line of interest and research. As a high school classroom teacher with student teachers, I noted the need for some 'models of conferencing' for the cooperating teacher. This has led to applying the research of the subject to a videotape series that has been adopted by over 50 universities and college nation-wide. The development of applying research in the videotape format has led to paper presentations and other professional activities as noted.

3

Homework has been a line of research since teaching at the high school level. This research interest was developed as a high school classroom field experiment in 1983 and dissertation topic while doing doctoral work. It has continued to be a line of research with an additional classroom field experiment at the elementary level in 1989. The results of this line of research can be noted in publications, paper presentations, and professional contributions, activities, and service.

Cooperative Learning has been a line of interest and research since 1982. It has resulted in being part of the homework classroom field experiment at the elementary level in 1989. In addition, research into the topic has led to workshops, paper presentations, and professional activities as noted.
