Over the past one hundred years, MTSU has grown from a small southern teachers college into a major state university with a national and international presence. We enroll more undergraduates than other Tennessee public universities, attract nontraditional students returning to school from the workforce, encourage distance learning, recruit graduate students from abroad, and retain faculty with diverse backgrounds. Our University family consists of tens of thousands of students, alumni, faculty and staff, friends, and supporters.

The colleges, departments, and programs of MTSU have strong individual identities. However, it is essential for the university itself to present a consistent and unified brand that builds on these successes, inspires new ones, and allows MTSU to continue into a second century with momentum and pride. Our brand is our promise. By sharing a common identity, we send a message that we are a single entity with one goal: being the best comprehensive university in tennessee.

The process of branding builds strength through consistency—in the message and in action. Consistency ensures that the public perception of MTSU reflects our personality, mission, and educational offerings and differentiates MTSU from seemingly similar institutions. A unified voice is essential to presenting our message in a way that people will respect and remember.

this branding guide has been developed to

• present MTSU clearly and appropriately to multiple audiences,

• help units within the University present themselves consistently,

• provide a way for units within the University to enjoy the benefits of marketing under the MTSU brand, and

• offer visual tools to help MTSU stand out from competitive institutions.

Why are visual identity standards important?

Every communication from the University reflects on the institution as a whole, and every person sending out a university communication is a guardian of MTSU’s public image. the mtsu brand should be a distinctive signature providing consis-tent representation of who we are. If Middle Tennessee State University is to maintain a consistent image of quality, it is imperative that the University community adhere to established guidelines in respect to graphic standards, marks, and colors.

Well-prepared communication takes time. For help with any form of printing, publishing, or design, contact Creative and visual services at 898-2896. Questions about advertising or the MTSU brand should be directed to the marketing and Communications Office at 494-7800.

each area of mtsu has different needs for print, web, and other types of media. This policy manual contains examples of various materials using appropriate colors, marks, and fonts as well as examples of improper usage.

The MTSU wordmark, seal, athletic symbols, and logomark are the only graphics approved to represent the University. Colleges, departments, schools, offices, and other individual academic units are not permitted to develop and use logos without approval from Marketing and Branding*. The mtsu seal is for official University business and formal documents. It is used on diplomas, legal documents, official announcements, and certificates.

Official wordmark and logo can be ordered via the Creative and Visual Services website at www.mtsu.edu/creativeservices/index.shtml. Creative and Visual Services staff can also help plan and produce printed and other materials while ensuring that branding guidelines are met. The Information Technology Division’s web applications team can assist in planning electronic media. If producing small quantities of printed materials from a desktop printer, Creative and Visual Services personnel are available to offer guidance.

Who should use this guide?

Points to remember

* Secondary marks in use before October 2010 are considered to be “grandfathered” into the MTSU brand for a period of two years; however, the University name must appear in the official fonts and styles. In addition, MTSU encourages owners of preexisting marks to bring them into compliance with current branding standards at their earliest convenience; these marks should be phased out of general use before August 2012.

1. Middle Tennessee State University should be clearly and prominently identified on the cover, front panel, or back panel of each piece, either by the full name or by the official wordmark.

2. To promote a consistent visual identity and protect trademark licensing agreements, MTSU logos and marks may vary in size but cannot otherwise be altered, tampered with, modified, or overprinted, as described later in this manual.

3. In a four-color publication, the color versions of the logos/marks/symbols are preferred, in official, approved MTSU colors (see section on color in this manual). In one- or two-color publications, only approved two-color or single-color versions of the logos/symbols may be used. Creative and Visual Services personnel are available to answer questions and provide electronic files.

4. The MTSU seal should be used on official or ceremonial documents and only in approved single- or full-color versions. Its use on marketing or promotional publications or promotional merchandise should be coordinated with Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC).

5. Whenever possible, a link to a web site should be in all publications. This includes the main MTSU URL (www.mtsu.edu) and/or other applicable links.

6. an equal opportunity statement is required by the tennessee Board of regents to be on all printed materials. Creative and Visual Services can provide this state-ment.

7. An authorization number should appear on all publications, preferably in small print following the equal opportunity statement. Authorization numbers are required by Tennessee Board of Regents policy and are assigned by Creative and Visual Services, (898-2896).

For more information about appropriate use of Middle Tennessee State University’s federally registered trademarks, contact the Marketing and Communications Office.

Graphic and visual elements

This section deals with basic identity elements: the wordmark, logomark, seal, colors, and typefaces that are the foundation of visual identity. The University’s name, word-mark, logomark, and seal are trademarks and property of Middle Tennessee State University. These elements may only be used by authorized units of MTSU or, through approval, by certain entities for external use. When in doubt about which mark to use, please contact Marketing and Communications.

What is a trademark/registered mark?A trademark (or mark) is any logo, image, symbol, name, nickname, letter(s), word, slogan, or derivative used by an organization, company, or institution to identify its goods/services and distinguish the institution from other entities or competitors. It is “owned” by the organization and cannot be legally used outside of the organization without permission. The name “Middle Tennessee State University” is a trademark and can be only be used on promotional materials or merchandise with permission. Other symbols and icons are also protected trademarks. When a product makes reference to Middle Tennessee (as the University), such reference requires approval. Our brand is the primary means by which mtsu is recognized; therefore, the University name, in the appropriate font that constitutes our wordmark, shouldappear on all forms of communication. The wordmark may not be visually altered, overprinted, paired with unapproved images, bordered, changed proportionally, or otherwise tampered with.

typographyTypography is integral to a consistent identity. The MTSU wordmark and logomark typeface family is Zapf Humanist (aka Optima), chosen for its modern, refined, and readable characters. Publication standards allow flexibility in body copy and text fonts, although they should be carefully chosen to complement the official font and be readable. Acceptable web font choices can be obtained from Information Technology and should be chosen for ADA and cross-platform consistency.

mtsu Colors

Color is as significant to a graphic identity as images. the official colors of middle tennessee state university are Blue and WHite. For readability, black is used with these colors to build the official marks and logos. Precise color matching can be difficult depending on the medium, art, or special effects being used. We recommend the following color formulas for consistency across media:

Black ................... Pantone® Process Black .................C: 0 M: 0 Y: 0 K: 100

MTSU Blue .......... PANTONE® 300 ............................C: 100 M: 44 Y: 0 K: 0

Web safe: #0066CC

RGB: R: 0 G: 102 B: 204

mtsu BlueFor printing on paper, Pms 300 is recommended for MTSU blue. For color matching of merchandise such as fabrics and plastics, most vendors have a “royal blue” available that is a close approximation of MTSU blue.

When printing spot color, PMS 300 should be used. If printing in process color, use the CMYK values: 100% magenta, 44% cyan. A color match prior to printing of any kind should be obtained and viewed in advance whenever possible. When in doubt, please consult with Creative and Visual Services.

school, College, and department signatures

Independent logos for University-supported units, departments, colleges, and schools are not approved for publications or merchandise. Symbols representing professional affiliation or mission of an area may be used, but separately from the University, school or college, or department name, which should be aligned with the MTSU name.

Colleges and schools should align their areas to the university to visually show the relationship between the two entities. Marketing and Communications or Creative and Visual Services can offer assistance. To integrate units, departments, and schools/colleges with the University more effectively, the MTSU wordmark should appear prominently on all college and departmental communications, even when it is necessary to separate the unit name from the University logo. The MTSU wordmark should always occupy the superior position above the name or mark of any other entity. some accepted graphic signatures are shown below.

the mtsu seal

In general, the seal is for official or formal materials representing Middle Tennessee State University, specifically the President’s Office.

If authorization is granted for using the seal, the following applies with no exceptions:

• The seal may not be altered in any way or combined with other logos or marks.

• The seal may not be screened in patterns, stretched, condensed, or otherwise visually distorted.

• Use of the seal in any colors other than black, PMS 300, or metallic silver or gold must be approved by Creative and Visual Services.

• Authorization to use the seal is for one time only.

Vendors are encouraged to use the wordmark, logomark, or one of several versions of the athletic logo; both are appropriate for soft goods and novelty items.

For usage requests falling outside the above guidelines, Creative and Visual Services personnel or the Marketing and Communications Office will review the specific request and determine if the usage is appropriate.

While the wordmark is the preferred branding symbol for MTSU as an academic institution, a less formal icon has been developed for some applications. It incorporates the slanted, interlocking “MT” with the full name of the University. The MT can be centered above the name or positioned to the left. The typographic treatment remains the same as on the wordmark, with MIDDLE TENNESSEE in bold and STATE UNIVERSITY in regular weight (except when the full name is on one line).

Mtsu College of eduCation

Student teachers must complete the following requirements placed on them by the University during their student teaching semester. In addition, they must complete any further requirements or assignments their cooperating teachers may have for them.

1. Student teachers must complete and submit a portfolio to their University supervisors.

2. All lessons taught must be based on written lesson plans.

3. Student teachers must teach at least one complete unit and prepare a plan for this unit.

4. Student teachers must observe at least three lessons taught by teachers other than their cooperating teachers during each placement.

5. Student teachers must attend all seminars scheduled by the University and/or their supervisors.

the mtsu student teaching experience

Before beginning student teaching placements, there are some things to know. Students have agreed to fulfill student teaching field placements in a public school system. These field place-ments are to prepare them for a careerin teaching and, because of the special nature of the placements, are not like any courses taken before. The semester-long course consists of two placements. The first is an eight-week placement at oneof the grade levels of certification. The second placement is at a different grade level and in a different school setting.

These two placements are required to prepare students for licensure and to give them a variety of experiences.

Formative evaluationUniversity supervisors will make three

to five observation visits during the first placement plus an initial get-acquainted visit and two to four visits during the second placement. Written feedback is provided following each visit, as is the required post-observation conference. Supervisors will make copies of evalua-tions for student teachers. Cooperating teachers should conduct informal observations and provide continual feedback to their student teachers. In addition, they are encour-aged to conduct formal observations, including pre- and post-observation conferences, at least once a week. Both cooperating teachers and University supervisors should conduct mid-period evaluations of student teachers during each placement using the summative evaluation instrument or a summary version of the instrument. The results of this evaluation are intended solely for the use of the three individuals involved and are not submitted to the Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences for the purpose of determining the final grade.

cooperating teachers are expected to attend, regardless of the time of day. This includes faculty meetings, inservice meetings, PTO meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and extracurricular events occurring in the school or school system.

absencesOnly two types of absences are excusable:

illness of the student teacher or a death in the student teacher’s family. Decisions regarding whether absences are excused are the joint responsibility of the cooperating teacher, the University supervisor, and the school principal. This committee will decide when excused absences must be made up. All unexcused absences must be made up. Seminars missed will be made up under the direction of the supervisor. In case of illness, a student teacher must notify both the cooperating teacher and the

University supervisor of an impending absence. Such notification must be made as early as possible to accom-modate changes of plans. Student teachers who are absent at a time when they are expected to teach are obligated to deliver the day’s plans and materials to cooperating teachers. Student teachers maybe excused from student

teaching for no more than one day to partic-ipate in Teacher Recruitment Week interviews sponsored by the MTSU Career Development Center each spring semester. Recruitment absences must be approved by supervisor and cooperating teacher.

Outside CommitmentsWork or family/personal responsibilities

cannot be excuses for failing to meet the commitments of student teaching. If such interference occurs, the student teacher will be given the choice of withdrawing from student teaching or making the personal adjustments necessary to give full attention to the program. The taking of other coursework during student teaching is prohibited by the Tennessee State Board of Education, except when special permission is given by the director of Professional Laboratory Experiences and the student’s department chair.

substitute teachingStudent teachers may not serve as

substitute teachers. A substitute teacher must be provided by the school should the cooper-ating teacher be absent. However, student teachers who have progressed to the teaching duties portion of their experiences may teach in their assigned classrooms in the presence of substitute teachers.

ConductStudent teachers must at all times conduct

themselves in a manner that is consistent with professional, ethical, and moral standards. Failure to do so may result in termination of student teaching. Student teachers may not date students or any personnel employed at the schools in which they are student teaching. Students at MTSU are subject to MTSU and local school system guidelines regarding prevention of sexual harassment. Any student teacher found to have engaged in behavior constituting harassment will be subject to disciplinary action which may include dismissal from student teaching and the Teacher Education Program at MTSU and other University disciplinary sanctions.

dress CodeThe attire and grooming of a student

teacher while in the school should conformto accepted good practices at the school. To determine these practices, student teachers should observe other teachers and ask their cooperating teachers and principals for guidance.

Corporal PunishmentStudent teachers may not administer

corporal punishment nor may they serve as “witness” when licensed school personnel administer corporal punishment.

Holidays and vacationsStudent teachers must follow the schedule

of the public schools to which they are assigned. School holidays and vacations may or may not coincide with the MTSU schedule. In all cases, student teachers are obliged to adhere to the schedules of their assigned schools. In the case of spring break, a dormitory resident may have to make other living arrangements for the week the dormitory is closed.

Child abuseStudent teachers should follow school

system protocol when reporting suspected child abuse (TCA Sec. 8B 37-1-403). It is the cooperating teacher’s responsibility to carry out the reporting procedures as described in Tennessee law and local school policy.

school Closings— inclement Weather In the case of school closings due to inclement weather, any days missed during the first and/or second placement will be made up at the end of the second placement.

Essential Information for

student teacherssummative evaluation

Student teaching is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Most student teachers will have two placements during the student teaching semesters. Each placement will include a separate, complete evaluation cycle by both the University supervisor and the cooperating teacher, and a grade of either Pass or Fail will be assigned at the end of each placement. Student teachers must pass both placements to pass student teaching. The cooperating teacher and the University supervisor will each complete an evaluation instrument. However, they are encouraged to share their evaluations with the student teacher in a joint summary conference. Final responsibility for the grade for each placement lies with the University supervisor. However, in arriving at the final grade, significant weight will be placed on the recommendation of the cooperating teacher. The summative evaluation instruments completed by both the cooperating teacher and the University supervisorwill be submitted to the Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences as permanent records of the student teacher’s performance.

Withdrawals from student teaching

During the first two weeks of the first placement, should the candidate or supervisor decide it is in the student teacher’s best interest to withdraw from student teaching, a grade of W will be given through the Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences. After this initial period, a regular withdrawal is not possible without consent of both the University supervisor and the director of student teaching. Withdrawal to avoid failing the course is not an option. In special instances regarding perfor-mance or conduct, the director of Professional Laboratory Experiences, in communication with the University supervisor, may withdraw a student from student teaching. They may prescribe specific steps the student teacher will have to take before being allowed to student teach again.

university requirements of student teachersGeneral Policies

Professionalism duringstudent teaching

While student teaching, students may consider themselves pre-service teachers. When MTSU students agree to be placed in public schools, they also agree to follow the rules of each school and school system. This means students must be at school at prescribed days and times, dressed in an appropriate manner, and ready to meet all assignments of their school and teacher. With few exceptions, there are no excused absences during student teaching. Students should see these experiences as the best opportunity to prove what they can do as teachers and as their best chance to get that first job. Therefore, students should consider any action carefully and weigh its consequences, as it will affect their evaluations as future teachers. Any violation of school or MTSU policies can result in termination of student teaching, failure of student teaching, and review of the student’s mem bership in the teacher education program by the Leadership Team of the College of Education.

assignmentStudents who have been

admitted into the Teacher Education Program at MTSU must student teach in the MTSU service area. As part of the application process, students can provide three choices for placement in a school in the county system or in a city system within the county. Student teachers will not be placed in high schools or junior high schools/middle schools they attended or in any school where members of their immediate families are staff members or students. Experienced teachers or teacher aides who are student teaching to meet graduation or licensure requirements will not be placed in the schools where they are or have been employed. Secondary student teachers will be assigned in their teaching major.

attendanceStudent teachers are expected to be in

attendance every day throughout the student teaching period and to observe the same school hours as regular faculty. Students may not leave school without permission of their cooperating teachers and supervisors. Tardiness at the beginning of the school day or at the start of a class is not permitted. Student teachers will not be excused from any student teaching responsibilities in orderto work, participate in a class, or take part in University activities (with the exception of University seminars or Teacher Recruitment Week). Student teachers are required to be present at all school-related functions which their MTSU, a Tennessee Board of Regents university, is an equal opportunity, non-racially identifiable, educational institution that does not discriminate against individuals with disabilities. Major requirements

At present, all geosciences majors, regardless

of career pattern, must complete a core of courses.

These include introductory geography and geol-

ogy plus an advanced course in spatial technol-

ogy such as cartography or computer and fi eld

methods in geology. In addition, a fi eld course is

required for each concentration.

After you select a career pattern, an academic

advisor will be assigned to you. Consult with

your advisor frequently, especially at regis-

tration. He or she will work closely with you to

choose courses providing the best preparation for

your postgraduate plans.

Major in Geoscience

concentrations in Geography and Geology

Successful majors receive the Bachelor of Science degree in one of two concentrations: Geography

or Geology. To provide maximum career preparation, the two concentrations are subdivided

into career patterns. These include geography, geography for teachers, and geographic techniques

in the Geography concentration and geology, earth science for teachers, and earth science technical

curriculum in the Geology concentration. Our Geosciences Department offers a minor in geogra-

phy and geology at the graduate level.

Employment in geosciences varies with the overall economic climate of the country. Right now,

the long-range outlook is better than that of many career fi elds. This is directly related to decreasing

amounts of energy, minerals, and water resources coupled with major global issues such as climate

change and environmental hazard assessments. All these issues present new and exciting opportuni-

ties for those trained in geosciences.

A campus-wide plan has been developed to promote a consistent visual standard for all University signage. Please consult with the Campus Planning Office before ordering any internal or external signage.

merchandise and licensing

Campus departments and student organizations sometimes purchase merchandise with University marks for promotions or events. Each of these items is an extension of MTSU’s brand or image. Just as there are branding guidelines for printing, similar policies hold true for merchandise.

Since use of MTSU’s name or other trademarks with an organization name implies association with the University, such usage must be sanctioned by Marketing and Communications.

Some of MTSU’s registered trademarks include the words or phrases MIDDLE TENNESSEE, MTSU, MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, BLUE RAIDERS, and LIGHTNING, plus the SLANTED MT logo, the WORDMARK, and the LOGOMARK.

digitized mtsu trademarksOfficial University marks can be combined with school or department names to comply with established standards for embroidered items. The digitized art is available to vendors through the Collegiate Licensing Company or Creative and Visual Services. This art has been modified specifically for embroidery while maintaining the visual integrity of the original design. When setting up for stitching, spacing of elements is important. Try to match, as closely as possible, the official blue (Pantone 300) for fabric or thread. a sans serif font set in all caps is recommended for the name of the school, depart-ment, or organization when this type is set up by the vendor. All vendors don’t use the same equipment or software, but a plain block font should be available. This alternative should offer some consistency in maintaining MTSU’s visual standards.

What has to be licensed?Printed materials covered under the policies of MTSU’s Marketing and Communica-tions Office such as brochures, letterhead, note cards, posters, and banners, for exam-ple, do not require licensing but do require approval. If any of these printed materials will be sold, such as a calendar or cookbook, the product must comply with MTSU’s licensing policies, and the publisher must be licensed through Collegiate Licensing Company. The licensing process is simple, and the Marketing and Communications Office can help.

middle tennessee state university reserves the right to disallow or request changes to designs that do not adhere to standards, that may conflict with current trademarks, or that might be seen as offensive or in poor taste. Sometimes, proposed designs fall into a “gray” area for which there is no firm standard, and in these cases the Univer-sity again reserves the right to disallow a design and/or to recommend an appropriate alternative.

In general, items containing the MTSU name, logos, or other licensed marks; items obviously connected with the University in some way or conveying or implying MTSU sanction, support, or association; and items to be paid for by University funds must follow these guidelines:

• Logos, symbols, and marks may vary in size but cannot otherwise be altered, tampered with, modified, incorporated into other marks, or overprinted with other words or design elements.

• Whenever an MTSU logo or mark is used, it must be prominent and separate from other designs or marks, including sponsor logos.

• The sponsoring department or organization must be identified. For example, a festival event can include the festival design/graphic and the text of the sponsoring department or organization name beneath it.

• To avoid being perceived as an official University logo, student event logos should not contain the slanted MT or the Middle Tennessee State University name within them. However, stating that an event or organization is “at MTSU” in text may be acceptable. Separate, prominent, and clear use of an approved MTSU mark can be elsewhere on the item (for example, on a t-shirt the logomark might appear on a front pocket or a sleeve, while the independent event/organization design appears on the back).

• Small items such as lapel pins should use a single design in appropriate colors or metals. Longer or formal names for schools and colleges, departments, or events should be on larger buttons or badges, not lapel pins. Creative and Visual Services can recommend alternatives.

• Only those student organizations recognized by the MTSU Student Government Association are allowed to use the University’s name.

• Use of a current student-athlete’s name or likeness on commercial merchandise is a violation of NCAA rules and can result in the student-athlete being declared ineligible. Any use of a student-athlete’s name, nickname, or picture must be approved by the Athletics Compliance Office.

• Use of art or other intellectual property owned by a third party must be approved by that entity in writing and submitted to Marketing and Communications along with the desired artwork.

• Student organizations and campus departments may include a sponsor name/logo along with University marks on products and some advertising. However, the student organization/department’s name must be included in such a way as to convey that the relationship is a partnership and not an endorsement by MTSU. University departments will need to secure approval of any joint advertisement from Marketing and Communications.

Compliance monitoringthis manual outlines branding on printed and electronic media and promotional materials. approval of marks and logos for merchandise or retail sale must be obtained from Collegiate licensing Company. use of marks and logos on publications and electronic materials must be approved by Creative and Visual services. printed material that will be made available for sale must comply with Mtsu printing policies as well as trademark and licensing policies.

electronic media

Web page guidelinesThe World Wide Web is an important tool for communication, learning, and scholar-ship. MTSU provides web resources to departments and individuals for legitimate University business and for scholarly activity. Web pages must be regarded in the same light as publications and written communication. As such, all pages will abide by federal copyright laws and applicable laws and University policies. Personal web pages are encouraged, but content should be consistent with MTSU policies. Review these guidelines at www.mtsu.edu/itd/approved_Web_Guidelines_v2_021010.pdf.

Any page linked directly from the MTSU home page must complement the main page design and navigation, as should the pages of all major colleges, departments, and schools marketed and promoted by MTSU. The marketing and Communications Office and itd’s web applications team can help main page links comply with this requirement.

The University recognizes the difference between official and personal pages. Official pages represent MTSU and its programs and should follow MTSU branding policy. Personal pages do not have to follow visual guidelines but should not give the impres-sion that they are representing, giving opinions, or otherwise making statements on behalf of MTSU.

Page 26: Visual Style Guide and Branding Policy Manual · 2016-03-19 · 4 middle tennessee state university / Visual Style Guide and Branding Policy Manual 1. Middle Tennessee State University

25

middle tennessee state university / Visual Style Guide and Branding Policy Manual

Since browsers can link to a page without going through pages that are logically “before” or “above” it, each home page should identify the department or unit and Middle Tennessee State University and provide a link to the MTSU home page.

All official pages should follow the MTSU styles for electronic information to maintain consistency in the use of punctuation, capitalization, titles, and the wordmark. Questions should be addressed to Marketing and Communications. Web page design should follow the standards established by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities. These federal standards can be viewed at www.section508.gov.

Contacts

Pages for schools, colleges, departments, units, etc., should use official MTSU colors and complementary colors in headers, banners, or other major design elements to maintain consistency with the home page. No page will link directly from the main home page if it is not in compliance with color schemes, navigation, and format as demonstrated by the home page. templates are available to assist campus areas in complying with standards.

The information technology division Web Design Committee oversees the appearance of the MTSU home page and the pages directly linked from the main page and reserves the right to review pages that are linked to University pages to ensure consistency.

Please note that this policy manual does not cover every circumstance or variation that might possibly arise. When in doubt about how to proceed on a project, the contacts listed below are available to assist you. Procedures and guidelines will be updated regularly.
