OPPORTUNITY FOR FACULTY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND THE CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION PROJECT ANNOUNCES TWO SUMMER INSTITUTES ON Visual Literacy & Diversity Director: Elsa Barkley Brown, Associate Professor, History and Women’s Studies, and Director, Visual Literacy Toolbox Co-Director: Rachel Caidor, Ph.D. Student, Women’s Studies June 2 - 6 Visual Literacy and Diversity: the Basics This session will help participants develop basic skills in using visual resources in building syllabi and courses, analyzing visual texts of various kinds, and creating innovative lectures and assignments using a range of curricular programs and visual materials. June 9 - 13 Visual Literacy and Diversity: Moving Images This session will help participants develop skills in using various forms of moving images, including film, television and digital media, to enhance course content. Participants will discuss selecting, using, and analyzing relevant images. There will also be hands-on sessions in which participants can work on editing their own materials. In addition to developing technological and pedagogical skills, participants in both sessions will explore issues relevant to visual representations of power and diversity in their classrooms and/or in their research. Participants may apply for one or both of the weeks. Participants will receive stipends of $700 per week. Faculty who participated in the summer 2007 institutes are eligible to apply for a session that is different from the one they previously attended. Sessions will be held daily, 9:30-12:00 and 1:00-3:30. All sessions will include opportunities for collaboration and hands-on work with the assistance of experts in electronic technologies. Participants will be expected to produce at least one visual activity for a lecture, assignment, and/or inclusion in the Visual Literacy Toolbox, http://www.arhu.umd.edu/vislit . Participants will also be eligible to participate in one-day follow-up hands-on lab sessions to be held in July and August. To apply, send a letter explaining as specifically as possible why you would like to participate in this project, as well as a one-page CV or bio. Specify which institute(s) you wish to attend. If possible, attach the syllabus of a relevant course. You may apply via email by writing to Elsa Barkley Brown ([email protected] ) or via hardmail by writing to her at Women’s Studies, 2101 Woods Hall, UM. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and you will be notified about your status within two weeks of your application.
