excitement. – More subtle colours, basic fonts and conservative
layout may appeal to traditional values of olderadults.

• What colours are used? How are they used?
Do they portray different characters? Arecolours used as symbols? How is colour used
to build atmosphere?
• Sepia(reddish brown colour of
photographs in the past) colours are
often used to reflect past times and
memories.
• Colour often has particular culturalsignificance. For example, red is
associated with prosperity in Chinese
culture.

Background-Illustrations and photographs
Composition
-The composition of an illustration refers to thearrangement of the visual elements in thepicture.
-The proportion, balance, harmony, anddisharmony within the various elements toproduce the desired visual impact.

Texture
-The impression of how a pictured object feels isits texture.
-Texture gives a flat surface (the paper) thecharacteristics of a three-dimensional surface.
-Textual effects generally offer a greater sense of reality to a picture.
-Less realistic styles may make use of texture toenrich the visual experience and to stimulate the
viewer’s imagination.
