(LDA), an agency of the LejweleputswaDistrict Municipality, has appointed Lict(PTY) Ltd. to conduct a feasibility study.“This is a large and complex transforma-

tion project which is very important to theLDA and the district as a whole,” saysKhaya Mqeke, media communicationsmanager for the district council.He says the key aim of the technology

innovation hub is to increase the competiti-veness of Lejweleputswa.“A technology innovation hub will impact

highly on economic development and jobcreation opportunities in the area,” saysEdward Lesenyelo, acting CEO of the LDA.Lict will have to do an assessment of the

district municipality as well as the fivelocal municipalities in the district. Thiswill include stakeholders located in thedistrict, as well as other government,private sector, tertiary and communityorganisations.“It is important for all municipalities to

assist Lict in providing the correct data sothat we can make this vision for Lejwele-putswa a reality.“The Census 2011 report showed that

about 80% of the population has no internetconnectivity and of those few who hadaccess; around 75% accessed the internetvia their cell phones.“This indicates that there is a lack of

adequate and affordable telecommunicationsinfrastructure in our district. Ek stel voor dat daar ’nwebblad begin moet word insamewerking met Afriforum –die webblad kan kommunikasiebevorder tussen gemeenskap-pe, stel navorsing en oplei-ding tot die gemeenskap sebeskikking en bevordergemeenskapbetrokkenheid.

THE Facebook group March AgainstCrime in Welkom has taken thecommunity by storm and to date morethan 1 400 have joined.

The four administrators, people whoare very passionate about theircommunity, were appointed to managethe group.

They are Marina Mattana, DesireeLourens, Trevor Claase and GilroyPotgieter.

“We have also formed a committeecomprising ten members,” says Potgie-ter.

They held their first committeemeeting last night.

The office bearers were elected andthe initial arrangements for the marchwere discussed.

“The mission of the group is to fightthe escalating crime and violence ratein Welkom and the surrounding areas.We have also started a petition in thisregard.

“We would like as many residents aspossible to join the group and also signthe petition,” says Potgieter.

The group’s mission statement reads:

The good people of the city of Welkomare horrified, saddened and deeplytroubled by the increasing levels ofviolence perpetrated in senseless mur-ders of senior citizens and other membersof the community.The crime statistics are horrific, people

no longer bother to report robbery andtheft, being grateful their lives werespared.The hate crimes especially and the

general crime rate is a reflection on thecity’s governing and controlling structu-res who have failed repeatedly to addressthe issue of crime and most especiallyviolent crimes which speak only ofhatred.Join the march and be present to let

the city’s leaders know that we’ve all hadmore than we can bear and we will makeour voices heard.We will take our grievances to the

highest authorities if the local gover-ning bodies continue to ignore theserious state of crime in our city.

THE case of four Lesotho men arrestedfor the alleged murder and rape of acouple in Virginia has been postponedfor a bail application until 27 November.The accused are Hendrik Tota (22),

THE Welkom police arelooking for an African malewho conned a Game client outof thousands of rands.“We are requesting the

public to assist in tracing thissuspect,” says Capt. StephenThakeng, communicationsofficer for the Welkom police.On 28 August the 24-year-old

complainant was at the GameStore in Welkom and heapproached a man that heassumed was a Game employ-ee.He asked the man to assist

him with a phone he wanted to buy. Theman was wearing a Game uniform. Thesuspect introduced himself as RobertMaseko, an employee of Game. He evenshowed the complainant his store card withhis photo, name and contact details on it.“The complainant told the bogus employ-

ee that he was looking for a Galaxy S4 cellphone. The suspect told the complainantthat he had to give him the money, andthen wait outside for him. This would

enable the suspect to purchasethe cell phone at the staff price,”says Thakeng.The complainant gave him the

cash. The complainant waitedoutside, but the bogus employeenever emerged.The complainant then went

into the store and made enquiriesabout the employee. He was toldthat no such person works forGame in Welkom.They could not find the

suspect, and it was discoveredthat the card was fake.A case of fraud was registered

at the Welkom Police Station for furtherinvestigations. The suspect has a mediumcomplexion, is between 1,6 m to 1,8 m tall,of medium weight, between the ages of 25and 40 years and he speaks Sesotho.Any person who might have information

THE former manager and chairman of theWelkom Society for the Prevention ofCruelty to Animals (SPCA) has been foundguilty of theft and sentenced to three yearsimprisonment, suspended for five years.Margaret Karen Louise Lauder was

convicted of theft in the District Court inWelkom on 13 November.She admitted to stealing R67 500 from the

Welkom SPCA over a period of a year,confirmed by a forensic audit.She was charged and arrested after she

had been removed from her post.A subsequent plea bargain was accepted

by the public prosecutor.Lauder was sentenced to three years in

prison, suspended for five years providedthat she paid R45 000 into the account of theWelkom SPCA.

A total of R40 000 had to be paid by 14November and the remaining R5 000 on orbefore 15 December.She now has a criminal record.“Appreciation is expressed to the justice

system of our country for the efficiency andspeed with which the matter was investiga-ted and brought before the court,” saysThea Smit, chairperson of the combinedWelkom and Virginia SPCA.“The National Council of SPCAs states,

on behalf of the entire SPCA movement inour country, that we shall not toleratefraud, theft or mismanagement of any kind.We have the highest standards which willbe maintained: through transparency andby taking whatever steps are deemednecessary if any instance of untowardbehaviour takes place,” says Smit.

Former SPCA manager sentenced

K9 WELKOM with their star dog Nathanmanaged again to seize dagga and arresta suspect. The unit received a tip-off thatdagga was hidden at a certain house inthe township of Kutlwanong. When thehouse owner allowed the squad into thehouse, Nathan went straight to thekitchen table and started to dig under it.The policemen took over from Nathan

and unearthed a 25-liter plastic container

with 73 packets of dagga. After confisca-ting this dagga the unit searched the restof the premises and somebody saw thatsoil in the garage was also loose. A bigrubbish bin was found buried in thegarage. Inside was a black bag with morepackets of dagga. An 18-year-old man wasarrested for possession of dagga.The dagga weighs a total of 8 kg and

has a street value of about R13 000.

is ná twee jaar vrygelaat nadat hy suksesvolgeappelleer het.Kort ná sy vrylating het Chantelle (29)

gesterf. Sy het beserings aan haar bene enarms gehad en haar man, Johan, kon haarnie wakker kry nie. Haar dood is aan ’noordosis pille toegeskryf.Landdros Bosch het in die hof gesê hy

THE Ikemiseng Crèche (which means letthem stand for themselves), Thabong, willbe celebrating 25 years of existence at afunction at the centre on 29 November.According to the matron of the centre,

Mmami Marumo, the crèche was establishedin 1989 by Motselisi Alina “Nasie” Marumowith the sole intention of protecting therights of children and fighting malnutrition.Marumo realised it was essential for the

various stakeholders to become involved.“Many families are not able to pay schoolfees due to unemployment and poverty.Having assessed and analysed the socio-eco-nomic conditions of the many householdsfrom which children attending crèche at thecentre come, the centre has committed itselfto have some children attending free ofcharge,“We saw the need for the creation of jobs

for the parents of disadvantaged children

attending the centre and deserving familiesin the community.“Vegetable gardens were created and

community members were trained to beself-reliant,” says MmamiIkemiseng prides itself on three income-

generating projects. The bakery producesbread and buns which are sold to thecommunity at a price which is affordablefor the poorest of the poor. The bakery alsogives out bread to needy households on aweekly basis.Then there is the sewing project in which

community members are encouraged to takepart to minimise the unemployment ratewithin the community.The centre’s staff makes its own uniforms

with their sewing machines and theuniforms are sold to school children to raisefunds for the centre.The vegetable garden at the centre helps

the centre to give food parcels to needyfamilies on a weekly basis.

hy tot laatnag om weer vir sy gesin ’neie dak oor die kop te gee.Stephen het aan Vista vertel hoe sy

twee kinders, Lyqisha (7) en Ethan (4),

uit die woonstel gevlug het toe ’n brandontstaan het.Hy en sy vrou, Rosaline, was buite

doenig toe die brand iewers in hulwoonplek ontstaan het.Sedertdien woon hulle in Rosaline se

ma se huis in die sitkamer.Rosaline sê hulle het baie hulp van

In Jordanië het ons ’n hele dag by Petra bestee en ’n nag in die woestyn in’n bedouinekamp by Wadi Rum deurgebring. Ons kon ook met drie groot bote ’n gospelfees op die see van Galilea bywoon. Een van die hoogtepunte was ’n saamtrek in die St.Annekerk by die bad van Betesda saam met Angus Buchan. Ons het al die belangrikeplekke in Israel besoek. Ons het baie vriende gemaak en as die Here ons spaar, maak onsvolgende jaar weer so. Ons beplan om dan ’n toer na Israel te reël wat Turkye gaan insluit,”sê past. He may further isolate you byshowing contempt for those you love and care about.Threats—Abusive men commonly use threats to keep their victims from leaving or to scare them intodropping charges.
