Objectives of the System Implementation
Implementation of the VG Karier automated mine fleet management system
(VG Karier) is aimed at the following:
• Higher efficiency of the mine transport fleet due to downtime reduction, and
loading control.
• Elimination of any opportunity for unauthorized fuel discharge
• Lower fuel and lubricant consumption per one tonne of transported mined
material due to minimization of downtime during working shifts, and sound
planning based on fuel consumption facts about every dump truck.
• Getting accurate and reliable information on the number of trips and tonnages
of the transported mined material. Longer running time of dump-truck
assemblies due to automatic control of loading, and speed limit compliance
control.
• Improved safety-in-operation due to automatic control of dump-truck speed
and permissible loading limits.
• Automation of maintenance and repair planning processes
• Improved mineral quality management due to the application of high-
precision navigation systems.

Description of the Proposed Solution
The System operates as follows:
Mobile objects, such as dump-trucks, shovels, dozers, refuellers, drill rigs,
loaders, auxiliary transport, etc, are fitted with the on-board hardware of the
System. On-board controller collects sensor readings, processes the data with its
own software, and sends the information via a wireless data transmission channel
to the Control Center (CC).
The Control Center receives the information on the position of every mobile
object, and sensor readings (dump body loading, fuel tank level, and some other
telemetry), where it is processed and archived.
At the System users’ workstations (traffic control operators, mine surveyors,
geologists et al.) the information is visualized on the screen as symbols placed over
the actual mine layout (surface mine electronic map), and as summary tables
containing telemetry data. The collected data processing and analysis allows

automatic reporting on the operation of mine and its districts, as well as
performance of individual machines and personnel.
In addition to the data automatically transmitted from on-board controllers to
the CC the System also takes advantage of some other information:
o tabulated data including lists of dump-truck operators, dump trucks, shovels,
types of loads, etc.;
o a vector map of the mine surface and infrastructure items, which is regularly
updated by mine surveyors;
o data from the geological survey, including blasthole testing data, as input
information for material blending control;
o a great variety of other data, such as, process information relating to mine
transport machinery control during a working shift.
With this System a traffic control operator gets a dynamic (realtime) view of
machinery operation and the opportunity for prompt, optimal decision-making in
regard to elimination of situations resulting from the machinery failure and
downtime, as well as on mined material quality management and optimization of
the material traffic flows.
Information stored in the System database can be used for a broad range of
reporting. The System comes with a set of customizable report templates, and a
toolkit (screens) for report creation by the Customer’s trained personnel.

Challenges Met by the Karier System
For the fulfilment of the System implementation objectives Karier meets the
following challenges:
Dump-truck trip logging
Dump-truck trip logging, including automatic identification of the following:
• Shovel number;
• Discharge point name;
• Loading time, waiting time before loading, discharge time, travelling time,
and other time characteristics;
• Load weight;
• Transportation distance.

12
Downtime Logging
The Karier System completely eliminates human factor interference in
downtime logging. A traffic control operator can only amend the classification of
some downtime cases and has no ability to correct or modify in any way the length
of automatically logged downtime.
Fuel Logging
The Karier System provides for “end-to-end” fuel logging including logging
of fuel in immobile storage tanks, loading of refuelers, fuel feed form refuelers to
transport vehicles, and control of fuel consumption by transport vehicles.
Every stage of this process is subject to double and triple checks. For
instance, in loading of refuelers the possibility of a discrepancy is checked in three
measurements: change of the fuel level of an immobile storage tank, change of fuel
level in a refueler vessel and fuel volume passed through fuel-handling facilities.
This type of check is also applicable for transport vehicle refuelling.

13
Hardware Diagnostics
The Karier System has features for diagnostics of on-board hardware,
monitoring of different parameters while adding-on sensors, as well as
transmission of diagnostics data received via interfaces such as Cummins, VIMS
Caterpillar, and the like.

14
The software provides for such features as automatic generation of hardware
repair and diagnostics work sheets for maintenance divisions, and monitoring of
failure response time by managers.
Tire Behaviour Logging Module
The module meets the following objectives:
• Storage of information on characteristics of tires subject to logging, including
their service life among all other data.
Tire mileage logging
• History records for every tire – from the start of operation to discarding,
including such events as relocation from one side of the vehicle to another and
dispatch to warehouse.

15
• Estimates of the current mileage for every tire based on dump-truck (loader)
mileage data.
• Displaying data on the actual state of every tire: vehicle, where it is installed (or
warehoused), current mileage, etc.
• Issue of recommendations in terms of the expected date of the service life
expiry based on the tire mileage statistics.
• Display of the summary information about tire behaviour for a certain period.
Main Assembly Running Time Logging Module
The module requires initial manual entry of information about units and
assemblies subject to logging, or automatic upload from company’s data storage
systems by Oracle DBMS. Every assembly subject to logging is added to a data
base, including such data as initial mileage for vehicles other than newly bought,
rated indicators for a particular assembly model, and assigned to a particular
mobile object. From this point on, logging is effected in an automatic mode, and
information about run time is updated every shift.
The main assembly run time logging module performs the following
functions:
Storage of reference information about makes and characteristics of
assemblies, which are subject to logging.

History records for every assembly – from the start of operation to discard
including such events as relocation from one side of the vehicle to another, or
disassembly for repair.
Estimates of the current running time for every assembly based on the data
on mileage and running time depending on the applicable logging procedure of the
company for the item, such as motor-hours, or standard running time stated in
reference books.
Display of the current state of assemblies, such as position, total running
time by the moment, etc.
Issue of recommendations in terms of the expected date of service life
expiry.
Motor Transport Operation Management Facilities of the Karier System
Mine transport fleet management facilities are intended for the enhancement
of the efficiency of mining processes and meeting the target quality characteristics
of mined mineral.
Operational management facilities include the following:
Malfunction pop-up notification engine
The System software allows the creation of various equipment
operation control algorithms. In case of malfunction a control operator or
other person in charge can see a pop-up notification on the screen. The list of
pop-up notifications may include the following:
• notification about loading data sheet infringement (overloading or
underloading);
• notification about speed infringement;
• notification about discharge outside a dump area;
• notification about non-standard downtime;
• notification about unauthorized fuel discharge;

• notification about overrunning the permissible range of controlled
health parameters.
The list of notifications can be adjusted to the customer’s requirements.
Planned and actual performance control engine
Graphic representation of planned and actual performance match-up for
the moment. The diagrams show which controlled object (dump trucks and/or
shovel) are lagging behind the schedule.
Graphic representation of dump-truck traffic diagram
This engine is generally used for logging of the fulfilled travelling of railway
transport facilities, and it is no less helpful for the characterization of road
transport operation. On the diagram, particularly striking are the cases of dump-
truck downtime due to waiting for their turn in a queue, and shovel downtime due
to waiting for dump-trucks. This component serves for graphic representation of
dump truck en-route traffic. The main screen of the template is a diagram, where
time is shown on the X-axis, while objects to which dump trucks travelled during
the work shift, are shown on the Y-axis.
The diagram is scalable in terms of time and name of traffic target objects.
When the cursor moves following the diagram, the upper section of the screen
shows the cursor time in the diagram coordinate frame. The diagram is furnished
with a measuring tool (a bar) for time characteristics. The measured time is

displayed in the “Measured Time” field on the top of the screen. When a dump
truck is selected, its diagram is displayed as a heavy line. When a shovel is
selected, the diagram shows only those dump trucks, which travelled to this shovel
during the work shift.
Mapping
The mapping module is based on OpenLayers technology. This technology
provides for the application of a variety of maps. The OpenStreetMap is the main
option (it shows house numbers, etc.) Along with the OpenStreetMap use can be
made of other open-type maps, such as, Google maps, Bing maps (Microsoft), etc.,
as well as any downloaded optional vector and bit-maps, both for the entire
work area of mobile objects, and for some of its segments. Maps of any types in
the System are scalable.
Depending on user’s rights the mapping module of the System can provide
an edit function enabling the users to create arbitrary static objects (buildings,
destination points, areas, routes, etc.), as well as to edit and move these objects
over the map. A feature is provided for linking the system notifications with the
position of transport facilities near such areas (arrival to a destination point,
deviation from a route, etc.).
Settings are made on a map for the display of events (refuelling, fuel
discharge, stopping, travelling outside the work area boundaries, etc.) and traffic
direction, and travelling history for any arbitrary period.

19
Road Quality Control
The Karier System has a feature for road quality monitoring. The module
functions as follows: crossing areas of main roads and dump area envelope are
specified on mine layout. Then, based on the history of dump-truck traffic, the
System automatically builds up the position of motor roads. Roads are classified as
bench roads (from a shovel to the nearest crossing shown on the layout), dump
roads (connecting the dump area and the nearest crossing or the outset of a
permanent road) and main roads.
Road cutting and characteristics of road carpet unevenness are estimated for
each road based on the data from dump-truck on-board hardware (inclinometers,
sensors mounted in suspensions).

Maintenance and Repair Planning Engine
This engine is used for maintenance and repair planning by creating frequency
recommendations for technical actions to be applied to a vehicle, by motor-hour,
mileage or time. Estimated dates of maintenance procedures can be manually
adjusted for optimization of repair team workload.
The maintenance and repair planning engine (hereinafter referred to as M&R
module) meets the following objectives:
• Records scheduled events in the maintenance frequency reference book. The
frequency can by specified by time, mileage or motor-hours. Eventually, this

information can be used for computer-aided analysis of the next technical
action.
• Automatic prediction of the next planned action date based on the information
on motor-hours, mileage or time with a feature allowing manual correction of
the information. This template is intended both for planning and for logging of
actually performed work.
• Mobile object availability logging for the generation of shift work sheets.
The M&R module makes use of the following reference books:
• Repair object
• Types of availability
• Maintenance standards and rates

Shovel Operation Planning and Control on the Basis of High-
Precision Positioning
The Karier System is integrated with the SAMARA software suite intended
for geological modelling, mine surveying and planning of development and mining
processes.
The general algorithm of the procedure is as follows:
• Preparation of the required data: geological model (surface model, if
only overburden removal is considered), data on shovel hourly output, etc.
• Delineation of the planned shovel operation area. The procedure is
applicable both for sections and for the layout plan.
• After the direction of shovel operation is specified the system
automatically divides the total planned volume into segments with equal
volumes generally corresponding to one shift or any other value, depending
on the volatility of quality or some other considerations.
• If necessary, other parameters are specified.
• The System automatically estimates the volume and quality
characteristics for each parameter.
• The sequence of mine working processes is specified.
• The System automatically estimates the mineral quality and its
volume for discharge points and creates an hourly chart. If the results do not
meet the requirements, the sequence of parameters for mine working
processes or plotting can be changed to meet the desired results.

• Export and transmission of the plan to a shovel operator graphic panel.
• In the process of operation a shovel operator gets a view of the
planned bench and elevations, as well as the actual position of a shovel,
including the difference between the planned and actual elevation.

Drilling work control
The Karier System provides for planning, management and control of drill-rig
operation.
The following procedure is used:
• With SAMARA or some other software for drilling and blasting
planning a drilling program is plotted. Data is exported to a special file and
transmitted to a drill-rig operator graphic panel.
• Using high-precision positioning hardware a drill-rig operator puts the
machine into planned position.
• If the drill rig is furnished additionally with sensors keeping track of
drilling parameters, such data is transmitted to engineers for updating the
blasting program.
External view of a drill-rig operator panel screen.
Shift-Time Control and Optimization
The optimization module offers the following features:
1. Estimation of the required number of dump trucks required based on the
actual performance of shovels, actual travelling speed of dump trucks and
other factors derived from the statistics of the current and preceding shifts.
Therefore, a dispatch control operator is prevented from sending “extra”
dump trucks to the work area, which operation cannot meaningfully
increase the output of shovels.
2. Enabling the dump trucks open-cycle operation with automatic control.
The driver gets from the System a notification showing to which shovel

his dump truck should travel after discharge, or after a significant change
of the situation in mining operations (failures, etc.).
The optimization module ensures the enhancement of performance by
accurately estimating the required number of vehicles and directing those vehicles
to the proper positions at the proper times. This functionality enables management
and control actions that result in significant performance enhancement as
compared to a manual system without intelligent computer based algorithmic
optimization.
For traffic control operators an operational control template is available:
With this template the traffic control operator divides the available shovel
fleet into groups, each working in an open cycle. A group may consist of a single
shovel. In this case, the dump trucks assigned to it are not redistributed by the
System in the process of operation.
A traffic control operator may manually relocate a dump truck between
groups and within a group. In this case, the System sends the same notification to a
driver as it does in case of automatic distribution. The driver is actually unaware of
the fact of who or what is guiding his operation: software, a traffic control operator
or a foreman using a workpad with software. However, every instruction is
recorded in the data base and can be analysed at any time.

Railway Transport Operation Logging
The railway transport operation logging module of the Karier System offers
the following features:
• Logging of railway traffic volumes.
• Downtime logging
• Visualization of locomotive position on mine layout and railway
scheme.
For automated logging of volumes the following procedure is envisaged:
• Specifying the loading and discharge areas on mine layout plan.
• Specifying the time of car coupling with a locomotive or uncoupling.
• Then, the System analyzes stopping in loading and discharge points
and based on this data it estimates locomotive train trips and the total
volume of railway traffic.
