Don’t miss the Mesalands Community College Dinosaur Museum, a first-class museum housing the world’s largest collection of spectacular full-scale bronze dinosaur skeletons cast at our local foundry. Stop by the Tucumcari Historical Museum with its storytelling exhibits, and visit the nostalgic New Mexico Route 66 Museum located on the south side of our convention center.

Get your picture taken in front of the Route 66 Memorial at the convention center or the world’s largest mural devoted to Route 66 in the U.S. Tour the town during the day to see other wonderful murals located all over the city; and, at night see the famous Route 66 neon signs. Soon you will be able to visit the New Mexico Railroad Museum located in the completely renovated Train Depot on North 2nd. Street.

Take a trip to nearby Ute Lake or Conchas Lake State Parks and go picnicking, hiking, boating, water skiing, scuba diving, swimming, sailing, wind surfing and fishing for bass, walleye, catfish, perch and crappie. Travel along the numerous Scenic Byways to see the unique landscape and variety of wildlife, including herds of antelope and deer, flocks of wild turkey, geese and other rare birds.

History & Facts

The area around Tucumcari was very significant during the Triassic Period, known as the dawn of the dinosaurs. Dinosaur fossils and footprints are very common here. Fossils from Quay County are in museums around the country, including Mesalands Community College Dinosaur Museum.

Tucumcari, originally called Six Shooter Siding, was a tent city at the foot of 4,999-foot high Tucumcari Mountain for the Rock Island Railroad. Tucumcari owes it beginnings to a snowstorm and the railroad. In 1900, two men stayed with A.D. Goldenburg during a horrible three-week snow storm. In return for Goldenburg’s hospitality, the two men told him that a railroad would soon be going through the area establishing a stop four miles from Goldenberg’s home. Goldenburg, his brother, Max and two other businessmen, purchased property where they felt the railroad would have to lay tracks.

By 1902, four passenger trains, two mail trains and two freight trains made daily stops at the new city. By 1910, almost 70 businesses had been established. Soon you will be able to visit the Train Museum, which will be a part of the Historic Railroad Depot located downtown off of Main Street.

When Route 66 was built through the town more than 75 years ago, the community began to thrive. The original “Main” street still runs through historic downtown Tucumcari. The local MainStreet Project is working hard on its goal to develop the historic downtown district as an arts and theater district centered around the historic train depot.

Old Route 66 still winds its way through Tucumcari. The neon lit signs down the boulevard and the vintage motels and restaurants are just a few of the town’s landmarks which continue as living legacies. The murals on the walls and in the buildings around town are Tucumcari’s newest landmarks.

How Tucumcari Got its Name

Tucumcari is thought to be among the oldest place names in New Mexico. While the real origin and meaning of Tucumcari in not known for certain, most historians and linguists believe that it is derived from a Plains Indian term, meaning lookout point or signal peak.

T.M. Pearce, an English professor at the University of New Mexico, researched the origin of Tucumcari. He believed that Elliot Canonge, an Oklahoma linguist, had the most convincing explanation. Canonge believed that the name comes from the Comanche tukamukaru which means to lie in wait for someone or something to approach. According to Felix Kowena, Canonge’s Comanche informant, Tucumcari Mountain was frequently used as a lookout by Comanche war parties. The mountain peak was an excellent lookout point since it can be seen from the Texas Panhandle more than 50 miles away.

According to Herman Moncus, a local historian, another possible meaning for the word comes from the Jemez Indians who lived in the Rio Grande Valley, but hunted in eastern New Mexico before 1800. Moncus believed Tucumcari can be translated from the Jemez language to a place of the buffalo hunt. Moncus’ research determined that the Jemez Indians probably learned the name from other tribes and it could be a name surviving from the pre-Indian or paleo-Indian periods.

On a less scholarly note, in 1907, a Methodist minister created a story about how the name evolved. The two finest warriors of an Apache tribe that made their home at the mountain met in combat to determine who would succeed their dying Chief Wautonomah. The survivor would also win the hand of the chief’s daughter, Kari. Tocom, the brave loved by Kari, was slain by Tonopah in the battle. Overcome with grief and rage, Kari seized her knife, killed Tonopah and took her own life. Heartbroken at this tragic turn of events, the old chief stabbed himself, crying out as he died, “Tocum-Kari, Tocom-Kari.” This story is what became known as “The Legend of Tucumcari.”

TUCUMCARI HISTORICAL MUSEUMThe Tucumcari Historical Museum houses thousands of items located on three floors of a 1903 school house. Forty-five thousand square feet of native landscaped grounds paint a picture of early western life in this area from cowboy memorabilia to pioneer kitchens, from old-time nickelodeons to Indian artifacts dating back to 12,000 B.C. With four outdoor and indoor exhibits arranged in storytelling fashion and with care to details, visitors can walk away feeling that they fully know Tucumcari’s past. MESALANDS DINOSAUR MUSEUMMesalands Community College’s Dinosaur Museum has the largest collection of bronze prehistoric skeletons in the world. These bronzes, unlike the resin models in most museums, are very resilient and invite the visitor to interact by touching. The museum is also home to many fossils, figures, and minerals representing the unique paleontology and geology of the region. This museum was the first in the world to

exhibit the 30-foot long torvosaurus skeleton

as its centerpiece. This meat-eating

relative of the tyrannosaurus rex from the

Jurassic Period, stood 15-feet tall

and weighed three tons. With teeth four to six inches long, this powerful creature must have been one of the most fearsome of the dinosaur age.

NEW MEXICO ROUTE 66 MUSEUMTucumcari is pleased to announce the opening of the one and only New Mexico Route 66 Museum. Located on the backside of the Tucumcari Convention Center at 1500 W. Route 66, the museum affords a unique experience and look into the Land of Enchantment’s Route 66 heritage. From Glenrio to Gallup, the Ozark Trails system to today’s historic Route 66 and everything else in between. “Be Enchanted” and explore our state’s 604 miles of original Route 66.

12 SHORES AT UTE LAKE GOLF COURSELocated on the south shore of Ute Lake, between Tucumcari and Logan, New Mexico, 12 Shores is a part of a planned resort community that is designed for family fun! While this beautiful nine-hole, Nicklaus designed course is capable of giving the most avid golfer a serious challenge, there are four different tees to choose from. Even the most novice of golfers can have a good time here. In fact, from the Junior Tees, one hole plays a very forgiving 189 yards shorter. The layout is mostly level, with a few holes right along the lake bordering wetlands. TREE IDENTIFICATION WALKING TRAILEASTERN NEW MEXICO OUTDOOR ARBORETUMThis trail is located within the NM State University Agricultural Science Center, 6502 Quay Rd. AM.5. The Ag Science Center has been in operation since 1912. It is NMSU’s oldest off-campus research facility. The center is located three miles northeast of Tucumcari on US Highway 54. Prior to conducting research in irrigated agriculture, the center evaluated trees for windbreak and farmstead planting leading to the establishment of over 50 species of trees and shrubs on the center grounds. In 2006, the NM Soil and Water Conservation Commission provided funding to help develop the Eastern NM Outdoor Arboretum with tree identification signs, installation of a drip irrigation system and replacement of some trees. ROUTE 66 PHOTO MUSEUM, The Route 66 Photo Museum is the world’s largest Route 66 Photo Exhibit and features 166, 24” x 30”, stunning color photographs taken in February, 2002 by professional photographer, Michael Campanelli. These photos are displayed at the New Mexico Route 66 Museum at the Tucumcari Convention Center and capture a sampling of sights along the “old road” from California to Illinois. The stunning photos provide a glimpse of what you might find, should you undertake that long journey today. From shimmering Western landscapes to glittering neon strips to rusting relics of roadside attractions, the photographs also inspire visions of the experience of Route 66 travelers looking for the American Dream – or at least a decent place to spend the night!

TUCUMCARI CONVENTION CENTERTucumcari is very proud of its 40,000 square-foot convention center. Located on West Route 66, it is a great place to “meet.” There are a variety of room sizes, complete with a kitchen and a bar for special events. The convention center houses the newly opened New Mexico Route 66 Museum. A photo of the Route 66 Monument makes a great keepsake of your trip. The convention center also houses the office of the Greater Tucumcari Economic Development Corporation. Make arrangements to bring your event to the Tucumcari Convention Center for “Western Hospitality at its Best!”

TUCUMCARI IS A “CITY OF MURALS” There are more than 40 murals in and around Tucumcari and Quay County. Most of these beautiful works of art have been created by Doug and Sharon Quarles, local artists. These artists have taken blank external walls on the buildings around town and turned them in to colorful, detailed paintings depicting different “things” about our area. You will be amazed!

Side TripsTHE VILLAGE OF LOGANLogan, approximately 24 miles northeast of Tucumcari on US Hwy 54, was created in 1901 when the Rock Island Railroad erected a tent city on the banks of the Canadian River. Logan is home to Ute Lake Reservoir and numerous boat and fishing stores. Logan’s main economy is derived from agriculture, ranching and tourism. THE VILLAGE OF SAN JONThe small but thriving town of San Jon (pronounced San Hone), just 22 miles east of Tucumcari on I-40, is an agricultural community curled up against the vast open spaces of eastern New Mexico. Historic Route 66 passes through San Jon, attracting tourists from all across the country. Call the Village office at 575-576-2922.

UTE LAKE STATE PARKOne of the longest lakes in the state, Ute Lake is 24 miles from Tucumcari. A warm-water lake with scores of inlets to explore, the lake abounds in bird and wildlife. Deer and antelope roam the surrounding plains and mesas. Round-the-clock fishing is available all year. The state-record small-mouth bass was caught here. You can also catch large-mouth bass, white bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, and perch. Ute Lake has primitive to full hookup camp sites and a full range of water sport activities. CONCHAS LAKE STATE PARKConchas Lake, 34 miles from Tucumcari, includes miles of shoreline, secluded coves, canyons, sandy beaches, petroglyphs, and ancient rock formations dating back to the dinosaur age. Conchas has ample camping and picnicking facilities, boat ramps, marina, fishing supplies, food services, and playgrounds. You can catch walleye, large-mouth bass, catfish, bluegill and crappie. Scenic BywaysMESALANDSTravel in loops out of Tucumcari through a colorful land of multicolored bands of geological history, sandstone rocks balancing in pinnacle formations and the cool winding waters of the Canadian River. This drive takes you through the high plateaus of New Mexico, the city of Natural Lakes, over the Pecos River, and by Tucumcari Mountain, Mesa Redonda and Lover’s Peak. Along the way, you are likely to find Pronghorn antelope and Sandhill cranes. Dinosaurs once roamed this region 100 million years ago. This byway has geological features offering educational, recreational, photographic, quality fishing, camping and shopping opportunities. ROUTE 66Affectionately known as “The Mother Road,” Route 66 has a mystic quality to it. Tucumcari’s five-mile claim to 66 fame is along Old Route 66 Boulevard, where you can still find a treasure of unique motels, restaurants, curio shops and plenty of neon. This national scenic byway, paved since 1937, provides an intriguing look at one of the first routes that allowed motorists to travel through the west.
