Visit to the Museum The visit to the Chinese History Museum had
given the students the opportunity to learn
about the early history of Chinese settlements
in Sarawak.
Later, through the visit to the Islamic
Heritage Museum, the students were exposed
to the Islamic culture such as influences on
architecture and costumes.
At the Dewan Tun Razak Museum, the
substantial number of archaeological items
amazed the students.
They were also greatly attracted by the
historical display of Sarawak’s fauna and
flora, and other ethnological artefacts such as
models of long houses situated at the Old
Museum. It was a memorable and
educational experience for the students.

Visit to the Cultural Village
21 March
On 21st March 2014, the primary one
students accompanied by 8 teachers
went on a field trip to Sarawak Cultural
Village. Before departing on two buses
Fr Francis blessed everyone with fine
weather and a safe journey. We reached
our destination safely and after a short
break at the lakeside pavilion, the
students toured the cultural village and
visited all the traditional houses of the
different ethnic races living in Sarawak.
The houses visited were the Malay and Melanau
houses, Penan hut, Bidayuh baruk, Chinese farm
house, Orang Ulu longhouse and Iban longhouse.
The students experienced for themselves the way of
life and cultures of all races and were very intrigued
by what they saw. Some local delicacies were
prepared at the various houses for visitors to
purchase.
The morning tour ended with a cultural
show at the theatre. We were
entertained to a variety of spectacular
dances and songs as well as a blowpipe
presentation. The dances and songs
depicted the way of life of the
indigenous tribes and races of Sarawak.
students toured the cultural village and
visited all the traditional houses of the
different ethnic races living in Sarawak.
Some of the students went on stage to dance the joget
at the end of the show. After lunch, we headed back to
school with memories and souvenirs of an enjoyable
and informative trip.

Kulleh Tajang (P1Hope) emerged as champion in the Mixed U 12 B (12 years and
below Group B) in the Super Squashers Social at Sarawak Golf Club, 15 – 16 March
2014.
Kulleh also ranked 42 for Boys Under-9 Years at the CIMB Rising Star National
Junior Championship Squash Competition at Bukit Jalil, 6 – 9 March 2014.
Kuching: Newcomers Brandon Tan and six-year-
old Kulleh Tajang played impressively at the
Super Squashers 2 last weekend, upsetting top
seed opponents in their respective Mixed Under-
12 categories.
Tan who started playing squash half a year ago,
toppled Emmanuel Dady from Bau to capture the
Mixed Under-12-A crown. Third seed Kulleh, who
is the youngest player in the tournament, staged
an upset against Javier Rogees in the Mixed
Under-12-B division.
Congratulations to Kulleh Tajang
In their tough encounter, a determined Tan
managed to subdue the more experienced
Emmanuel 3-1. Kulleh downed Javier who is
three years older in straight sets, attracting
much cheer from spectators and fellow players.
“They may be small but these pint-sized
dynamos have demonstrated vast potential to
become future state and national champions. I
am impressed with the competitiveness and
standard of the younger players,” chief coach
of Super Squashers, Andre Kho said in his
statement to The Borneo Post.
Kho, who is also the Super Squashers series
coordinator, added that the objective of the
event was to promote a healthy lifestyle
through squash as well as develop athletes to
be mentally and physically strong. The focus of
this second series was to find and develop
junior players in the state.
The tournament, held at the Sarawak Golf Club
on March 15 and 16, attracted more than 70
players. It was divided into seven categories,
namely, Mixed Under-12-A, Mixed Under-12-B,
Boys U-18, Girls U-18-A, Girls U-18-B, Men
and Elite.
“This is the first time in Sarawak that the
categories in a tournament are segregated by
abilities and standards of players instead by
age and gender,” Kho highlighted. (cont’d)

Kho hoped the Super Squashers Social mixed
categories could motivate talented younger
players to continue training harder to improve
their game.
Winners will be upgraded to a higher category
in the next series to ensure that players will
continue to better themselves.
The next Super Squashers Series is expected
to be held in July. Kho urged interested
participants and fellow squash enthusiasts to
check out Super Squashers Facebook Page for
the announcement of the next series.
In the Girls U-18-A category, Nicole Chai
emerged champion followed by Jasmine Lo
and Evelyn Lo.

with Natasha and Nurina second and third

SJS Band Dinner 2014 On the 30th of March, the St Joseph’s School Band had its annual dinner to celebrate the past year’s
events. This year’s theme was “Hollywood” where participants were encouraged to dress up like their
favourite stars. A special thing about these annual dinners is that the band remembers and thanks
those who have contributed towards the band, especially the seniors who have dedicated so many
years to help shape the band and some parents who supported the band wholeheartedly. The
enjoyable dinner was held at 56 Hotel, Jalan Tun Jugah. During the dinner, everyone was serenaded
by the music of band members. A hilarious video was shown and a game was played that left everyone
bursting with laughter. As cliché as it may sound, it truly was a night to remember.

The Young Christian Students (YCS) of SJPS
recently participated in a project called Serve: Love
Lent Project 2014 which was held in the premises of
St Joseph’s Secondary School’s canteen to cater
lunch for approximately 1,500 urban poor and less
privileged individuals. Just like the other volunteers
of the Empowered Ministry’s project, a handful of
students and a teacher from St Joseph‘s Private
Secondary School contributed with their share of
help in preparing the meals and sending them to the
distribution centres. This project was carried out
with immense effort. The spirit of volunteerism
encourages love, caring and sacrifices among the
students. Albeit the hard work, we were acquainted
with fun, a sense of generosity and teamwork.
Those student who have participated gained a
better understanding of the Empowered Ministry‘s
many project s and have been inspired to take a
step further to plant a seed of good thoughts.
