TESTING AND CONSULTANCY

The study of corona performance ofoctagonal Bersimis conductorbundle for 1200 kV AC line wasbrought-out. In continuation to theCPRIís contribution in optimizing the1200 kV line design and evaluatingthe 1200 kV equipment, UHVRL atHyderabad studied octagonalBersimis conductor bundle for air in-sulation. This work is first of its kindin the country and useful in optimiz-ing the conductor - tower air clear-ance which has a direct impact onthe cost of transmission towers.

Air Insulation Studies for 1200kV UHVAC Transmission Line

The study is to optimize conduc-torñtower air insulation clearancesfor adoption in 1200 kV AC transmis-sion lines. Eight Bersimis conduc-tor bundle was used for the study. The evaluation of the switching im-

pulse performance of large elec-trodes for EHV/UHV line design car-ried out by many researchers sug-gest that withstand/flashover char-acteristics under switching im-pulses of positive polarity are to beused for the design of external airgap insulation of lines in the EHV/UHV range. The breakdown voltagealso depends on the shape of theimpulse. In the case of air insulation, for each gap length there is an im-pulse time to peak for which thebreakdown voltage is minimum.Series of tests were carried out onsimulated UHV tower windows toobtain the Critical time to crest (Tcr)for which Critical Flashover voltage(CFO) is obtained. This critical waveshape was used for determining theoptimum clearance required forwithstand voltage of 1800 kVp cor-responding to 1200 kV transmissionlines. The withstand voltage wasdetermined from the flashover volt-ages as per IEC 60060-1 and veri-fied the same by applying 15 im-pulses and evaluating as per thewithstand voltage procedure. Withthe optimized window clearancesand with the insulator string in place, wet test simulating rain condition

was also carried out to ascertain thewithstand ability of the optimizedtower window clearances.

Eight bersimis conductor bundlewith 35 m length was strung be-tween the end towers of the mockup tower. The sub conductor spac-ing was fixed at 550 mm. The oc-tagonal conductor bundle wasstrung at suitable height aboveground to avoid any disruptive dis-charges to ground or any otherearthed object other than the towersimulation. Suitable corona ringswere connected at either end of thisconductor bundle and terminated onboth sides with porcelain insulatorsof sufficient length to avoid disrup-tive discharges to the anchoringdead end towers. Tower simulationat top and sides was done with steeland aluminum channels. Air gapclearances from 7 m to 10 m werestudied to arrive at the optimumclearances required for 1200 kV ACtransmission lines. A view of the ar-rangement of the total set up withbundle conductor along with insula-tor string and tower window simula-tion is shown in the Figure. Thisstudy was sponsored by PGCIL.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Many concrete structures have beenseverely damaged or collapsed by therecent earthquakes. It clearly indicatesthe need for evaluating the seismic ad-equacy of existing buildings and to im-prove the existing methodologies to de-sign new seismic resistant structures. In particular, the seismic rehabilitation ofolder concrete structures in high Seis-micity areas is a matter of growing con-cern, since structures Vulnerable to dam-age must be identified and an accept-able level of safety must be determined. To make such assessment, simplifiedlinear-elastic methods are not adequate. Thus, the structural engineering commu-nity has developed a new generation ofdesign and seismic procedures that in-corporate performance based structuresand is moving away from simplified lin-ear elastic methods and towards a morenon-linear technique.

2.0 PUSHOVER ANALYSIS

The structural analysis in earthquakeengineering is a complex task because(a) the problem is dynamic and usuallynon-linear, (b) the structural system isusually complex, and (c) input data(structural properties and ground mo-tions) are random and uncertain. Themethods recommended in most of theexisting building codes are based on theassumption of linear elastic structuralbehaviour and do not provide informationabout real strength, ductility and energydissipation. They fail to predict expecteddamage in quantitative terms. For thetime being, the most rational analysisand performance evaluation methods forpractical applications seem to be sim-plified inelastic procedures, which com-bine the non-linear static pushover analy-sis of a relatively simple mathematicalmodel and the response spectrum ap-proach. The main aim of the pushoveranalysis is to determine member forces

FULL SCALE FOUR-STOREYED RCC STRUCTURE

and global and local deformation capac-ity of a structure. The information can beused to assess the integrity of the struc-ture.

Basically, a pushover analysis is a se-ries of incremental static analysis car-ried out to develop a capacity curve forthe building. Based on the capacitycurve, a target displacement which is anestimate of the displacement that thedesign earthquake will produce on thebuilding is determined. The extent ofdamage experienced by the structure atthis target displacement is consideredrepresentative of the damage experi-enced by the building when subjected todesign level ground shaking. Many meth-ods were developed to apply the nonlin-ear static pushover to structures withminor variation in computation procedure.

The pushover analysis can be describedas applying lateral loads in patterns thatrepresent approximately the relative in-ertial forces generated at each floor leveland pushing the structure under lateralloads to displacements that are largerthan the maximum displacements ex-pected in design earthquakes. The push-over analysis provides the inelastic limitas well as lateral load capacity of thestructure. The changes in slope of thiscurve give an indication of yielding of vari-ous structural elements. The informationcan be used to assess the damage vul-nerability of buildings.

3.0 COLLABORATIVE RESEARCHPROJECT

The accuracy of the whole pushoveranalysis is largely dependant on the ac-curacy of pushover curve. However, thereis a lack of experimental data availablein the literature to evaluate different meth-ods recommended to develop the push-over curve. With this back ground a col-laborative research project titled ìSeis-mic pushover tests on prototype RCCframed Structureî was taken up jointly

by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC), Mumbai and Central PowerResearch Institute (CPRI), Bangalore tocompare different analytical procedureproposed by various researchers andrecommended by various codes. Thisresearch project was conceived by Re-actor safety Division of BARC. The scopeof the project is to construct a full-scalefour storeyed RC frame structure and toconduct pushover tests to evaluate theaccuracy of different methods followedin developing push over curves by com-paring the analytical results with that ofexperimental investigation. In this con-nection, a round robin exercise isplanned under this research project.

4.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE FRAMESTRUCTURE

A reinforced concrete structure consistsof a single bay four storeyed frame wasconstructed. The structure is an as-it-isreplica of a part of an existing office build-ing at BARC, Mumbai. The sizes, rein-forcement details, layout and other de-sign details are replicated from the de-sign of the original structure. The storyheight is 400 cm. A raft foundation of size6730 x 7400 and depth of 700 mm wasconstructed over a rock out crop. In or-der to ensure rigid foundation to the pro-totype structure so that the columns canbe assumed to be fixed to the ground inthe analysis, 144 nos. of 20 mm diam-eter rods were grouted to the bedrock. The cross section of columns at base is900 mm x 400mm and 900mm x 350mm.The cross section of beams of the framestructure is 230mm x 1000mm. Materialproperties are assumed to be 25 Mpa(M20) for the concrete compressivestrength and 415 MPa for the yieldstrength of the longitudinal and transversereinforcement. The dimension of the build-ing floor is 5m x 5m c/c between beamsin plan. Strain gauges are mounted onsteel reinforcement and on the concretesurface at critical locations.

5.0 ROUND ROBIN EXERCISE

The main objective of this Round Robinexercise to synergize the expertise ofvarious researchers working in the fieldof pushover analysis of RCC structuresand to identify the effective analyticalmethodology that predicts the pushovercurve more closely under monotonicallyincreasing lateral loads. BARC had in-vited academic and research institutesto take part in this exercise. The com-plete structural details of the RC framestructure were furnished to all the insti-tutes willing to participate in this researchprogramme.

The scope of the round robin exerciseinvolves

a) Performing pre-test pushover analysis

b) Participating in on-site testing of thestructure

c) Performing post-test analysis modify-ing their recommended procedure if re-quired

d) Formalizing the best solution to theproblem at hand

Many academic institutes like IndianInstitute(s) of Technology, Thapar Insti-tute of Technology, Thiagarajar Collegeof Engineering, National Institute of Tech-nology Surathkal, Research Instituteslike Structural Engineering ResearchCentre, NPCIL participated in this exer-cise along with BARC and CPRI. Theseinstitutes have presented the methodolo-gies adopted by them and the corre-sponding push over curve before actualpushover test on the structure. The push-over curves developed by these institutesare shown in Figure.1.

6.0 PUSHOVER TESTS

Although, various procedures are avail-able to analyze and obtain the pushovercurve, there is an acute lack of experi-mental data by comparing with which theaccuracy of the analytical procedure canbe evaluated. Moreover, such a data iseven rarer for full-scale structures. Hencepush over test on a proto type RC framedstructure was proposed under this re-search project.

A pushover test is performed by subject-ing the four storeyed structure to a mono-tonically increasing pattern of lateralloads, representing the inertial forces, which would be experienced by the struc-ture when subjected to ground shaking.Different forces distributions can be usedto represent the earthquake load inten-sity. Under incrementally increasingloads various structural elements mayyield sequentially. Consequently, at eachevent, the structure experiences a lossin stiffness.

Loading arrangement consisting of slowspeed electrical winches and wire ropesover the existing anchor structure ofTower Testing station at CPRI is usedfor applying lateral loads on the struc-ture. The estimated loads on the struc-ture at ever floor level are applied in aninverted triangular pattern. The ratio offorces at first floor, second floor, third floorand fourth floor is kept as 1: 2 : 3 : 4 asshown in the Figure 2. Pre calibratedload cells and indicators are used formonitoring the load application on thestructure.

Loads were applied with predeterminedincrements and the corresponding lateraldeflections are measured using digitaltheodalites & laser sensors and verticaldisplacements with dial gauges. Dynamicstrain recorder has been used to moni-tor and record the strain levels in the re-inforcement and on the surface of theconcrete at pre identified critical loca-tions. At few Beam-column joints, rota-tions are also recorded using rotationmeters.

During loading cracks are developed atmany locations. At each loading incre-ment the crack positions were marked. The maximum load (sum of loads appliedat each floor level) the structure withstoodwas 94.5 Tonnes. At this load level, the

deflection of the building kept increasingwithout increase in the magnitude of lat-eral loads applied and subsequently thetest was stopped.

7.0 SCOPE OF THE FURTHER WORKPROPOSED.

The experimental load deflection curveobtained from the pushover tests will bemade available to all the participatinginstitutes for further fine-tuning their ana-lytical procedures in developing pushovercurves. The failed structure will be retro-fitted. The pushover test will be repeated.By this additional experimental data willbe available to researchers to validatetheir analytical methods. During the sec-ond phase of the Round robin exercisethe method, which predicts closer to theexperimental results will be identified andrecommended for designing the newstructures and to assess the capacityof the existing ones for seismic loads. Inaddition, the results of the proposed sec-ond push over test will be used to evalu-ate the efficiency of current retrofittingtechniques.
