On behalf of Corvallis’ nearly 60,000 residents, we are so pleased that you have chosen to visit our community, whether for business, pleasure, or both.

Although Corvallis has earned national recognition for a number of its attributes, we are particularly proud of its recent recognition as the top city in the country in innovation. Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, writing for the journal PloS ONE, did the math and found that Corvallis led the nation in patented inventions as well as economic output, personal income and preventing violent crime.

You'll also find that Corvallis is an easy place to navigate. The downtown and University neighborhoods are highly walkable, and the city has been named one of the nation’s most bicycle-friendly. I encourage you to explore the many unique, locally-owned shops, restaurants, art galleries and other attractions as part of your visit. Stroll our lovely Riverfront, which features a lively Farmers' Market on most Saturday and Wednesday mornings and a central fountain perfect for people-watching and cooling off on a warm summer day.

Just blocks from downtown, you’ll find Oregon State University with its historic campus and a host of activities year-round. Whether your preference is Pac 12 athletics, notable lectures, music or theatre performances, or a visit to the OSU Beaver Store for a keepsake

from your visit, OSU can meet your needs.

Corvallis’ location in the heart of the Willamette Valley also means you are just minutes away from a multitude of other recreation opportunities. Pack a picnic and visit the picturesque wineries located throughout the region. You’ll find friendly people, award-winning wines and spectacular scenery. Or, try a day hike through the McDonald Forest, Finley National Wildlife Refuge or other beautiful settings just outside the city limits. The city also hosts a variety of festivals, fairs and other special events throughout the year. Be sure to stop in at the Corvallis Visitor Center, 553 NW Harrison Blvd, and chat with an expert on things to see and do in Corvallis.

As you get to know this highly livable college town, perhaps you’ll find yourself wondering about Corvallis as a place to live or do business. The influence of a major research university, thriving sectors of high tech, agribusiness, biosciences, and green energy, and an educated workforce result in a solid local economy. In fact, Forbes magazine ranks Corvallis among its top 20 Best Small Places for Business and Careers. Our local Chamber of Commerce or staff at the City of Corvallis can provide additional information about doing business here.

As your stay with us ends, I hope you’ll agree that Corvallis is a very special place. Thanks for your visit; please come again soon!

Warmly, Julie Manning, Mayor

America’s Most Innovative City!By Bennett Hall

Here in Corvallis, we like to brag about how smart we are. And why not? We are, after all, the birthplace of the inkjet printer, the transparent transistor and the Maraschino cherry.

For years the city has been cropping up near the top of national “most innovative” lists, based on the number of patents issued per 100,000 people. But we always seemed to trail larger communities. Now a group of academic researchers has come up with a new way of crunching the numbers that goes beyond per capita rankings to strip out some of the disproportionate advantages that come with size.

By their calculations, Corvallis emerges as the most innovative city in the United States, bar none. Based on a comparison of more than 350 metropolitan statistical areas, we also do very well in the related rankings of wealth creation and low crime rate.

The findings were published in the Nov. 10 edition of PLoS One, the online journal of the Public Library of Science, by Luis M.A. Bettencourt and Geoffrey B. West of the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute, Jose Lobo of Arizona State University and Deborah Strumsky of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Welcome To corvallis!

By Morgan Dumitru

Internationally recognized for its safety, educational opportunities, bicycle accessibility, and energy purchasing history… by all accounts, Corvallis is a leader in green livability and an epicenter of sustainable studies and achievements. But that’s not all.

Many of our farms are organic, many of our wineries are pesticide-free, and our farmers' markets are bustling. We have more green buildings per capita than anywhere else in the country. From our composting program to our green energy challenge, from our co-op grocery stores to our sustainability groups, community has been the backbone of eco-friendly change in Corvallis. However, a wonderful community to live and work in has just been the beginning.

As the home to Oregon State University, one of the largest and most recognized research universities in the country, Corvallis

is in a unique position of not just leading by example, but also teaching sustainability to a new generation of leaders. In 2010, Oregon State University (OSU) was named a "Campus Sustainability Leader" by the Sustainable Endowments Institute. Last year OSU was also voted among the top 16 green universities in the country by “The Princeton Review”.

Being a part of the OSU community, you are inherently part of two worlds. You are a citizen of Corvallis – able to enjoy the farmers markets, bicycle paths, and energy credits – and a student, faculty, or staff-member of an internationally renowned research university – challenged to go above and beyond, addressing the issues of tomorrow, as well as those of today. Organic fair-trade coffee, community gardens, student activism, wave energy pistons, well-loved bicycles, and the philosophy of environmentalism mingle here.

From our tree-lined streets, to our state of the art laboratories and classrooms, Corvallis and Oregon State University are pursuing sustainability like few places on earth. Take a hike in the beautiful hills that cup our community, or sit down for an award winning locally grown meal. Sustainability isn’t achieved in a month or a year, but then again, one doesn’t receive awards for sustainable livability accidentally.

Visit Corvallis, and you’ll immediately notice the tremendous contribution Oregon State University makes to the economic, cultural, recreational and social vitality of our community. It’s a place where faculty, students and alumni are turning ideas into reality — meeting challenges and solving problems through research, innovation and application.

True to its designation as the state’s land grant university, Oregon State is investing a better future with a focus on three signature areas of research and teaching: Earth systems science; human health and wellness; and economic and social progress. And as Oregon’s largest public research university, Oregon State attracted $261.7 million in research funding last year. Oregon State is also one of only two land, sea, space and sun grant universities in the United States.

With nearly 25,000 students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries, Oregon State welcomes a diverse student body that’s known for its friendly, close-knit community. Students can choose from more than 200 academic programs, with many

offering multiple opportunities for internships, research projects and other hands-on learning.

Oregon State’s 420-acre campus is just blocks from downtown Corvallis. One of only a handful of universities listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the campus features stately buildings, seasonal landscaping and green, open spaces.

Oregon State hosts multiple events throughout the year, many of which are free and open to the public. Join in with students, faculty, staff and the community at musical performances, plays and films. Listen to a notable writer or scientist or participate in a natural resources symposium. Plus, there’s the excitement of Pac-12 Conference athletics, with the Oregon State Beavers competing in a variety of men’s and women’s sports.

Oregon State offers guided tours daily for prospective students and their families, as well as opportunities to meet faculty and current students. You can also take a self-guided tour of campus. Call the Oregon State Tour Office at 541-737-2626 or pick up a Visitor’s Guide and Self-Guided Tour brochure at the information booth on Jefferson Street.

sHoP UniQUeA stroll through Corvallis' lovely downtown area reveals a plethora of unique shopping and dining experiences lying in wait for the adventurous traveler. Located through First and Sixth Streets, between B and Tyler Avenues, you'll fi nd our pride and joy: a shopping district lined with fantastic little boutiques and one-of-a-kind eateries. A trip down First Street to enjoy our Commemorative Riverfront Park and the shopping and dining

opportunities that have crystallized along this breathtaking walk is not to be missed.

Shopping opportunities abound outside of our downtown area, as well. Neighborhood centers tucked away throughout Corvallis offer a wide variety of entertaining surprises for shoppers. Timberhill and Ninth Street, in particular, offer some great excursions. Several of our larger stores await side-by-side with smaller, locally owned

shops in these areas. Monroe Avenue, along Oregon State University, is home to several trendy little storefronts, as well as coffee stops and restaurants to suit every taste and budget.

Our rich and active community of artists provides us with amazing art and handmade jewelry to fi ll our shops, and we have a diversity of custom jewelers, a few wonderful little spas, and some of the fi nest dining anywhere.

As technology and mediachoices continue to evolve, our newspaper and digital

products remain, by far, the primary source of local news, information and advertising

in our communities.

DistilleriesBenton County is best known for its wine and microbrews, but our distilleries are making news, too. We’re home to three different distilleries: 4Spirits Distillery, located in historic Adair Village and named for four fallen combat

veterans who served with distillery owner Dawson Offi cer; Veracity Spirits Distillery, specializing in a super-smooth vodka made from organic, locally-sourced corn; and Hard Times Distillery, proud distillers of the Sugar Momma Vodka, which has been called “the rum fan's vodka.”

Corvallis abounds in natural areas and forests. We're known for forestry research, as well as hiking, biking, and more leisurely strolls through nature. Corvallis presents an opportunity to learn, too.

Beazell Memorial Forest is a demonstration forest with four miles of trails and open space area managed with progressive ecosystem practices for environmental, education, and research opportunities.

McDonald Forest features interpretive trails showing aspects of forest ecology and management. Researchers work in McDonald Forest to answer questions like “What impacts do restoration projects have on oak woodlands, prairies, and savannahs?” and “What impacts do forest roads have on stream clarity and fi sh habitats?” And that's just for starts – there are up

to 80 different research projects happening in McDonald Forest.

Also inside McDonald Forest you'll fi nd Peavy Arboretum, a 40-acre preserve featuring over 200 native and exotic plant species and three different interpretive trails of its own. Visitors are warmly encouraged to explore these trails and learn more about forestry.

Starker Forests provides both guided and self-guided tours to become acquainted with their forest management practices and the great outdoors. They offer a quarter-mile walking trail, along with a more in-depth bus tour that is available every Wednesday from June through September. (Those interested in the bus tour will want to make reservations ahead of time – these tours fi ll up fast! Call 800-334-8118 to reserve your seat.)

Both of Starker Forests' tours feature several points of interest, including 80-year-old timber stands.

Whether you seek to learn more about the inner workings of nature's bounty, or you're just looking for a lovely trail to walk, Corvallis has the place for you.

Visit Corvallis and you will soon see that this is one of the most pe-destrian and bicycle-friendly com-munities in Oregon. Automobile drivers in town are courteous to bicycles and pedestrians, helping to create a safe environment. The city maintains a network of paved paths that link parks together and provide people with car-free bike rides and hikes. Corvallis and Ben-ton County parks provide a variety of paved and unpaved trails, giving you easy access to beautiful natu-ral areas. Ask for a trail suggestion at one of the many bike shops and outdoor stores in town; you’ll get a range of answers tailored to the time of year and your desires. Here are a few to start with:

Mountain Biking

Bald Hill Natural Area is a great starting point for a variety of off-road adventures. Three separate lots with plenty of parking lead to both paved trails and branching single-track that connects to Fitton Green, Oak Creek, and Cardwell Hill County Parks. Ride quietly and you're likely to see deer, coyote and many species of birds. Make sure to clean your bike before and after rides to reduce the transpor-tation of invasive species.

Road BikingIn addition to nearly twenty miles of paved multi-use paths within Cor-vallis, many roads in the area offer wide shoulders and light traffic. Ride south or east and you'll be greeted by rolling hills and local agriculture. Head north or west for a more chal-lenging route such as the ride up Sulpher Springs Road or the daunt-ing climb to Marys Peak (4.097 feet).

Hiking

Whether your ideal hike is on a boardwalk, paved path, forest trail, or grassy meadow you can find it nearby. Catch a glimpse of the rare Fender's Blue Butterfly on a hike through William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge just south of town. Watch beavers build their dams at Sunset Natural Area or have a picnic among wildflowers in Tim-berhill Natural Area. North of town OSU manages Peavy Arboretum, a great place to grow your love of trees. More than fifty great hikes are nearby. Additional hiking informa-tion is available at the Corvallis Visi-tor Center, 553 NW Harrison Blvd.

Corvallis is a vibrant community of artists and art-lovers. It seems like every other week we have a big ar-tistic event happening to celebrate our local performers and creators and show off their works. We have a diverse array of arts galleries, and most of our downtown shops proudly offer locally-produced goods, jewelry, and decorations.

In 2012 and 2013 our celebrations are going to be bigger and better than ever, because we have some major anniversaries coming up!

The Whiteside Theatre's 90th anniversary happens in 2012. This grand old theatre was one of Oregon's original movie palaces and time, two fi res, and long period of closure took its toll on this gor-geous theatre. Our community is

working to restore this historical gem to all of its former glory.

The Arts Center turns 50 in 2012, also. The Center works to integrate arts into Corvallis' community through outreach and creative education programs, among other projects. It's also devoted to showcasing some of the best our artists have to offer. And speak-ing of showcasing local arts, our Fall Festival marks its 40th year in 2012. This festival turns Corval-lis into an artistic Mecca, drawing creators from all over the state and almost 30,000 people annually to enjoy those creations!

The da Vinci Days Festival cel-ebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013. Every year da Vinci Days devotes three days to arts and science, incorporating outstand-

ing artists, amazing feats of engi-neering, and more into a stunning sensory experience that would do its namesake proud. We expect its 25th year to be nothing short of amazing.

The big anniversary belongs to the Majestic Theatre, which will see its 100th anniversary in 2013. The Majestic fi rst opened its doors in 1913 as a vaudeville house, and a century later it's still serving Corvallis as a center of live arts, at-tracting local, regional, and national musicians, featuring live theatre, and acting as a hub for artists of all stripes in Corvallis.

We invite you to join us in 2012 and 2013 to help us celebrate our artists and their work in a year-long gala honoring the spirit of innovation and artistic creation!

By B. A. Beierle

Corvallis’ story begins more than 10,000 years ago, when ancient ice dams collapsed near present day Mis-soula, Montana. These dams released cataclysmic fl oods that scoured across today’s eastern Pacifi c North-west and brought rocks and rich soils to the Willamette River Valley.

Later, Kalapuya people lived here and promoted acorns – a staple of their diet – by managing the Valley with fi re. When early Euro-Ameri-cans reached this valley, they found abundantly rich soils and land successfully managed for centu-ries. They also found the Willamette River was navigable to Corvallis.

This water transportation route would later support steamboat navigation and give rise to riverside grain warehouses and early brawny businesses that shaped much of today’s historic downtown.

The Willamette Valley was the Eden at the end of the Oregon Trail for thousands of immigrants. Early settlers included J.C. Avery, who settled on what is now the south side of downtown along the Mary’s and Willamette Rivers. Avery built Corvallis’ fi rst home and staked off twelve acres around his log cabin for the fi rst town lots.

In 1846 William Dixon fi led a claim north of Avery’s along the Willamette

River. These adjoining claims met in the vicinity of today’s Benton County Courthouse.

In 1852, when Oregon Territory ex-tended from Canada to California and from the Rocky Mountains to the Pa-cifi c Ocean, the territorial legislature selected and established a territorial university here. The Corvallis Acad-emy, the fi rst community school in the area, eventually became Oregon State University (OSU). The campus plan refl ects John Olmsted’s early de-sign and remains a signifi cant aspect of the dynamic role of the campus in the greater cultural landscape.

When the college moved from downtown in the 1890s, North Col-lege Hill historic neighborhood de-veloped on a gentle slope. Nearby, the inviting and walkable College Hill West Historic District includes almost 400 structures.

Corvallis also showcases other his-toric neighborhoods: Avery Addition, Franklin Square, North & South Cen-tral Park, North Downtown, Rayburn Addition, South Town, and others.

Corvallis’ collective memory lingers along its tree-lined streets, punc-tuated with colorful gardens and framed with residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial remind-ers of a shared past that infl uences the image of the community today.

Self-guided walking tour maps and brochures are available at the Corvallis Visitor Center, 553 NW Harrison Blvd., Corvallis.

RELOCATIONCorvallis is a wonderful place in which to live. With a mild climate, desirable ameni-ties and vibrant cultural life, Corvallis is also a popular retirement location.

MedicalSamaritan Health Services, a network of hospitals and health care facilities in the mid-Willamette Valley and central Oregon coast, is based in Corvallis and ensures that top-quality health care is readily avail-able. At Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, state-of-the-art facilities special-izing in heart surgery and cancer treatment have been added in the last few years.

WeatherDelight in the many seasonal changes that keep our city beautiful and provide for a wide spectrum of activities throughout the year. Enjoy the colorful spring and fall as well as our pleasant summers and mild winters.

Average rainfall is 40 inches per year, which occurs primarily during the months of November – April with little to no mea-surable rainfall from July-September. The average summer temperature is 80-85 and 40 during the winter.

Air & Water QualityDue to a gap in the Oregon Coast Range, Benton County receives ocean breezes

which provide a constant air exchange and give residents the highest air quality in the Willamette Valley. The Willamette River borders the county and runs from south to north. Surface water resources are among the best in the state.
