MAKING A DIFFERENCE

When an idealistic young man arrived in the Commonwealth from Massachusetts more than a half-century ago, he quickly saw that

the power of television could bring needed educational resources to children in the Eastern Kentucky mountains. Soon, his vision expanded to encompass all of Kentucky — and in 1968 KET was born.

In the spirit of this issue of Visions focusing on the 1960s, we present a reprise of a feature article on KET founding executive director O. Leonard Press, who worked throughout the 1960s to build and launch KET.

August 20142

Len Press’s life could have easily been that of a mild-mannered English teacher at some New England college, a beloved professor whose wit shone not only in the classroom but in that oft-seen twinkle in his eye. So it might have been, had the Massachusetts native made a different turn in what he calls his own personal “geography of opportunities.” English teacher at this crossroads, the founder of what would become one of the nation’s premier educational television networks at another.

“In my experience, reasons for picking a path are usually based on the paths available to choose from. I think of it as a geography of opportunities in which every block you walk opens to a number of branching paths,” he says.

The opportunities that presented themselves were a product of Press’s times and upbringing. Raised during the Great Depression and a veteran of World War II, Press came of age in a time of great optimism, as well as one of great responsibility.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Press was writing at a very young age, mainly stories and essays about what he was learning and experiencing. In those days radio was still new and exciting — but when the time came to enroll in college, he considered English or the liberal arts. However, Press listened to his father, who told him he’d better apply himself to a practical discipline, and so he majored in accounting.

Yet radio — and the new thing, television — still lured him, and when he returned to school from World War II, it was a master’s in communications he sought. By then he had met, wooed, and married his wife, Lillian, who joined him as a graduate student at the Boston

University College of Communications. He got a job. Not his dream job, yet,

but quite possibly the final turn which would lead Press toward the creation of Kentucky Educational Television. Boston University hired him to handle all radio and TV spots for the university.

“Television had just come on line — so I worked with Boston’s first commercial TV stations producing some of the nation’s first telecourses.”

After they received their master’s degrees, the young couple had their sights set on one place: New York, a lifelong dream of Lil’s. But one of his résumés just happened to land at the University of Kentucky, where the young head of its broadcasting department had big plans for developing a television station. The idea took firm hold of Press’s imagination.

“And I’ve got to admit, I was intrigued by seeing another part of the country. I’d never really been anywhere.”

Not long after his arrival, Press was working in conjunction with WHAS-TV in Louisville to produce a program on Christmas in the mountains. He found himself in the company of Alice Slone, who was the founder and director of the rural Lott’s Creek Community School in Cordia, which received no state funds.

The Christmas program was produced, but Press came away far more interested in the educational problems of the area: Lott’s Creek had no state accreditation due to a lack of qualified teachers.

“Of course I’m thinking, ‘wow — if

we could get television in there, they could have the courses they need for accreditation!’ he recalls.

“So Alice and I would talk a lot about that. And I remember one time I left there and she said, ‘I really think this is great, and I know you can do it — just hurry!’”

All over the nation, Press recalls, people were making the connection between television and education. But

here in Kentucky, Press made it his mission to use the power of this new technology to improve basic education, not just in the mountains but throughout the Commonwealth.

Architect’s drawing of the O. Leonard Press Telecommunications Center, dedicated in 1992.33KET.org

“It was something I couldn’t get out of my mind.”

“And again, the fact of my times, my upbringing — all of that contributed to the drive I felt about this. I really wanted to do this. It was something I couldn’t get out of my mind.”

Press’s quest, of course, was successful. In 1962, the Kentucky General Assembly passed into law legislation creating the Kentucky Authority for Educational Television and named Press as its first executive director.

From there, work went into creating a system of transmitters throughout the state and constructing the Network Center in Lexington, which contained two studios and offices for staff.

On Sept. 23, 1968, KET signed on the air for the first time, broadcasting weekdays during school hours. That same year, KET produced its first instructional television program, Kentucky Is My Land.

And nearly 46 years later, our mission has expanded and changed to reflect the times, but the same vision continues: to serve the educational and cultural needs of the Commonwealth through electronic media.

From politics and music to scandal and pop culture innovation, Sixties Week on KET is full of flashbacks, flower power, and fun memories

It was a complicated decade, full of tragedy, innovation, social

movements, and change. During KET’s Sixties Week, Aug. 10-

16, go in depth with the political figures, musical icons, and cultural revolutions that defined the period. On Kennedy Half-Century, explore

the impact and influence of President

John F. Kennedy’s life, administration, and tragic

death. Then on JFK: Breaking The News examine the broadcast coverage of his 1963 assassination. Richard Nixon, at the center of American politics for more than

25 years, continues to arouse both anger and admiration. In Nixon’s

The One: The ’68 Election, talk show host Dick Cavett narrates a look at Nixon’s

stunning victory in the 1968 presidential race and examines the ways in which that historic

election gave rise to Red State-Blue State America. The Sixties were a time of tremendous change, perhaps no better exemplified than in one groundbreaking year. In 1964: American Experience, trace the

events that shaped the rest of the decade and beyond. It was the year the Beatles

came to America and Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali – and the year when three civil

rights workers were murdered in Mississippi,

Berkeley students rose up in protest, and African Americans fought back against injustice in

Harlem. The 1964 World’s Fair shows how this was also the year when visitors flocked to New

York to get a glimpse of the future. And finally, no discussion of the 1960s would be complete without a look at the music that helped define the era and transform a generation. We’ve got Motown,

Jimi Hendrix, Burt Bacharach, and more. But of course it all starts with the Beatles.

Spend an entire evening with the Fab Four beginning with How the

Beatles Rocked the Kremlin. Even though the band never performed in the Soviet Union, their music and rebellious style soaked into the lives of a generation of Russian kids. Then, Great Performances’ “Magical Mystery

Tour Revisited” chronicles the behind-the-scenes story on the

making of the film and provides context for “the summer of love” era

that set the scene for its production. A screening of the movie immediately follows.

Join us for annual Fancy Farm Picnic

Throughout the country, at annual fish fries and other

summer events, the food and crowds provide fertile ground

for old-fashioned stump speeches by politicians of all stripes.

Here in the Commonwealth — with its reputation for excellent

Western Kentucky barbecue — throngs have been drawn for

decades to tiny Fancy Farm, where the summer heat and even

hotter speeches keep crowds captivated.

Join us this year when Bill Goodman and Renee Shaw host

live coverage from the annual political event including candi-

date speeches for the U.S. Senate and other statewide and fed-

eral offices in Fancy Farm 2014, beginning Saturday, Aug. 2 at

2:30/1:30 pm on KET and streaming at KET.org/live.

The daylong coverage will include the afternoon’s political

stump speeches in their entirety. Goodman and Shaw will pro-

vide a pre-event analysis with political observers. “Fancy Farm

is still widely considered a premier political event in Kentucky,”

Shaw said. “KET viewers are among the most informed and

politically plugged-in, and it’s our privilege to follow these con-

tests even at this very early stage in the fall campaigns.”

“Fancy Farm has become a ‘must see’ event for many of

our KET viewers,” added Goodman . “We do our best to bring

viewers the flavor and feeling of one of the oldest political pic-

nics in the nation.”

You can also catch up on highlights from the day’s events

in a special highlights program Monday, Aug. 4 at 8/7 pm, pre-

empting Kentucky Tonight.

He was well-known in Kentucky for his pro-hemp and pro-marijuana stance — and his message carried far beyond the borders of the Commonwealth. Learn more about the late peren-nial politician and lawyer Gatewood Galbraith in Gatewood, premiering Thursday, Aug. 14 at 10:30/9:30 pm on KET2. Beginning in 1991, Galbraith ran for governor

five times, until his death in 2012 at the age of 64. This documentary follows Galbraith on the campaign trail beginning in the 1990s through bingo halls and barbeques as he attempts to get his unique message out and influence voters. Although he built up a considerable base of fans and support over the years, Galbraith never held public office. Learn the challenges that faced this outsider candidate in politics and discover his unconventional and controversial character. Gatewood also airs Sunday, Aug. 17 at 10/9 pm on the Kentucky Channel and Saturday, August 23 at 10:30/9:30 pm on KET.

Give it a restNew health program looks at sleep issues

“Sleep is the Rodney Dangerfield of health issues. It gets no respect,” says Dr. Phillip Bale, a family practitioner and prevention specialist in Glasgow. While most medical experts agree that adequate sleep is integral to good health, it’s an area that receives scant attention. On the next Health Three60, host Renee Shaw dives into the multi-faceted world of sleep and looks at how it impacts health, safety, and productivity in “Sleepless in Kentucky,” airing Monday, Aug. 25 at 10/9 pm on KET. While people of all ages don’t get enough sleep, the most sleep-deprived are teenagers. Studies show the average American teenager spends more than seven hours a day using entertainment media, time that is often stolen from sleep. While brain research shows that teens require about nine hours, they are only averaging six. In addition to Dr. Bale, the program features UK and U of L sleep experts and researchers, who explain the function of sleep; sleep disorders, particularly sleep apnea; sleep hygiene for every age group; and the role of policy and work-place systems. “Sleepless in Kentucky,” funded in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, also airs Thursday, Aug. 28 at 4/3 pm and Friday, Aug. 29 at 11/10 am on the Kentucky Channel.

The tulip first appeared in Europe in the mid-16th century as an imported luxury from Turkey. Soon after, the stock exchange began dealing in them, men were murdering for them, and people mortgaged their house to buy a single bulb. Then the end came overnight.

SHORT TAKES

KET is headed back to the 1960s!

Beginning Aug. 10, we’re featuring a special week of programming about the Sixties, through the music, culture, and events that shaped our nation. From the Beatles to Jimmy Hendrix, Kennedy to Nixon, the 1960s were a definitive decade.

It was also the decade that saw the birth of public broadcasting in cities and states across America.

In Kentucky, KET founding executive director O. Leonard Press spent the Sixties traveling the state, talking to edu-cators and policy makers, building support for what would become the largest public broadcasting network in the country. In the autumn of 1968, his vision was realized when KET went on the air with its first broadcast.

In the 1960s, as a student at Gardenside Elementary in Lexington, I was fortunate to have Ms. Virginia Gaines Fox as my school librarian. Ginni Fox would soon join Len Press at KET, and eventually become its second executive director. I later had the privilege to work for both of them, and under their leadership, I became passionate about KET’s public service and educational mission.

Since the Sixties, KET has grown from one channel, partially broadcasting Monday-Friday, to three 24/7 digital channels along with a wealth of programs and resources available online and on mobile devices.

Despite all the changes through the years, KET’s mis-sion remains the same. We’re here to serve you and your family, educators and students, with high quality opportu-nities for lifelong learning.

We’re also bringing that educational programming to life this month with a free back-to-school event for fami-lies: KET’s annual Super Saturday on Aug. 9 from 9 to 3 pm. Children will meet the Cat in the Hat and enjoy musical performances by PBS Kids host Mr. Steve, as well as many other educational and entertaining activities.

We hope to see you at Super Saturday. As we said in the Sixties, it’ll be groovy!
