From the PresidentIt’s Time for a New Plan

For years, Mason City has had a reputation as a community that was “over-planned, and under-implemented”…meaning, we did a good job of putting our ideas down on paper, but perhaps not-so-good at putting those ideas into action. (You may recall some of these plan titles from my bookshelf: Developing Common Ground: Land Use & Joint Development Plan, Master Trails Plan, and the Willow Creek Master Plan, to name a few.)

However, in preparation for the new millennium, then-Mayor Bill Schickel commissioned an ambitious visioning and planning project known as the Mason City 2010 Strategic Plan. Our community and local government used this plan in conjunction with the Mason City Comprehensive Plan to set annual goals and objectives, as well as to align resources with these strategies.

Well, 2010 has come and gone and we’ve been operating without a formal community plan for awhile now. Actually, everything was moving along just fine in this mode; in fact, Mason City was clicking on all cylinders. But now…it seems we’re at a crossroads. Earlier this year, the City Council identified strategic planning as a priority. As a community and economic development partner, the Chamber board has offered resources and support to the City of Mason City to move ahead with a planning process. After all, the entire North Iowa region relies upon the economic health and well-being of Mason City. We believe charting a course to encourage growth and development is critical to our region’s success.

The Great Race visits Mason City On June 25th, hundreds of spectators made their way to Mason City’s beautiful East Park to welcome The

Great Race to town. Over 100 antique cars and trucks (and one vintage motorcycle) rolled in for an afternoon lunch stop, coordinated by Visit Mason City.

The 2016 Great Race began in San Rafael, CA on June 18th. Throughout the week, driver/navigator teams traveled an undisclosed route, making their way to their final destination in Moline, IL on June 26th. The 2,400-mile route took the races along the Lincoln Highway in six states – California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Iowa and Illinois – in addition to a side trip to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore and the Badlands. A time-speed-endurance competition, Great Race teams were not aware of their route until the day in which they traveled it. Each morning they were given precise instructions, detailing every move down to the second. They were scored at secret check points along the way and penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score determines the winner. An arrival ceremony began in East Park around 1pm on June 25th. Teams began to arrive shortly thereafter. Presentation of the flags and Color Guard were provided by the North Iowa Detachment #859 Marine Corps League. Tiffany Munshower performed the National Anthem. As the cars arrived, Brian “MotorMouth” Goudge, spokesman of the Great Race crew, kept the crowd entertained as he announced each vehicle and shared cool facts and figures about the cars and stars of the Great Race. With assistance from members of the local River City Street Rods group, drivers parked their vehicles, which were quickly swarmed by spectators wanting to get a closer look, take photos and get autographs from the teams. Visit Mason City staff and volunteers served the racers a “Unique to Mason City” lunch—loose meat sandwiches (provided by Pro’s Sandwich Shop), “Iowa” sweet corn (provided by Hy-Vee East), and ice cream (provided by

Birdsall’s Ice Cream). Lunch was sponsored by Mason City Ford. Drivers and navigators came from all over the world – some even had their vehicles shipped to the United

States in order to compete in the race! As the teams signed the Visit Mason City guest book it was noted that we had visitors in Mason City, Iowa from Japan, Finland, Canada and from both sides of the coast in the United States.

Held in conjunction with the 11th Annual Cannonball Day festivities, the event not only provided a great day of fun for visitors and residents, but also great publicity for our community.

A BIG thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make the Great Race event a success!

Willow Creek Waterfall featured

Did you know that Mason City is home to a picturesque waterfall? If you answered no, you’re not alone. Though it is on private property and is not open to the public, the Willow Creek Waterfall is “hidden” in plain sight. Passersby can sneak a peek from the East State Street bridge, located within the Rock Glen-Rock Crest Historic District, across the street from the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House.

Recently featured in two posts from OnlyInYourState.com — The Ultimate Iowa Waterfall Road Trip and 9 Hidden Waterfalls in Iowa—this local cascade has quickly turned into quite a little attraction this summer. Many visitors have stopped into the Mason City Visitor Information Center, as well as other Mason City businesses to inquire about how to find the waterfall.

BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION PROGRAM UPDATE

T HE NORTH IOWA CORRIDOR EDC annual Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program is over

halfway complete for 2016. The BRE program is used to identify opportunities for growth and any impediments that discourage local expansion.

Shaun Arneson, Vice President, Existing Business and Project Management and the North Iowa Corridor staff conduct in-depth interviews throughout the year with major employers in manufacturing, ag-related and service-related business in the region to gather information. The same questionnaire is used for each company visit to help identify individual business needs, concerns and suggestions about the local business climate. The North Iowa Corridor has completed similar interviews in past years. By utilizing the Synchronist Business Information System, a software tool to organize, analyze and report company information, the Corridor gains invaluable insight into the dynamics of the local economy. All company information gathered is kept strictly confidential and results are only available in aggregate form. An annual report will be compiled and distributed to the companies which will track trends over time.

One of the many questions asked is if the business plans to expand within the next three years. This could mean physical expansion but also could mean investment in new equipment, real

explici endant nimilit

estate, products and/or services. If a company plans to expand we request estimated capital investment and if there would be any new jobs added due to the expansion.

Of the companies interviewed so far in 2016, ten have indicated future expansion with an estimated total capital investment of $64 Million and the potential for 98 new jobs. This is a very promising sign for the North Iowa Corridor region. We monitor those companies with possible expansion plans and when they are ready to proceed we work with them and provide them with the necessary resources to assist with their plans.

Entrepreneur mentors provide coaching all week and guest speakers present on specific topics: Tyler Anderson of Roller City (Being an Entrepreneur), Brad and Angie Barber of Cabin Coffee (Customer Service), Miriah Whitehurst of Marketing #360 (Social Media Marketing). Tony Halsted from Hoover’s Hatchery in Rudd provided motivational inspiration to the young entrepreneurs as the keynote speaker.

On the final day, the students pitched their business ideas by submitting an executive summary that included a company description, financial plans, and key measures that were scored by regional judges (Rick Whalen, Butler County REC; Mary Hopper, Natural Plus Nursery; Renee Anderson, NIACC Project Manager—Grants & Workforce Initiatives; Barrett de Cathelineau, SVP—NSB Bank and Tyler Anderson, Roller City.)
