vision for the football program

VISION FOR THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM
This packet of information details the vision and things I have planned for
the Lancer Football Program. The Rancho Cordova area has many great
athletes and my goal is to build Cordova High School not only into a
northern California power but also into a state power. I have seen that the
last 3 years Cordova has had good seasons and I plan on building on that!
Student-athletes will be prepared to be better citizens in society. Student
athletes will be the epitome of great character, integrity, and accountability.
Coaches as well as students will hold themselves to high standards when it
comes to the classroom and on the field of competition. We will develop
students through the pursuit of excellence in every aspect of life. Building
work ethic in the classroom, in the community through service, and on the
field of play.
Pillars of Lancer Football
L. Leadership- Players will lead by example in the classroom, in the community,
and on the field.
A. Accountability- Players will hold themselves to high standards in everything
that we do.
N. No Quit Attitude- Players will use challenges as opportunities to get better.
C. Commitment- Players with growth mindsets willing to put in the work to
obtain excellence in everything they do.
E. Enthusiasm- Players have fun, work, and play with passion.
R. Relentlessness- Self-motivated players who do whatever it takes to achieve to
their goals.
LAYING A GOOD FOUNDATION
*Cordova Football Players will be held to a higher standard, they are expected to be
leaders in the classroom, hallways, and in the community. They represent the school,
football program, and the community.
Attracting Players to the Program
1. Visit the Middle Schools and speak with 8th graders about the Lancer football
program and the school.
2. Myself and other coaches should go to the middle school football games and
speak with players. Invite theses players to practices, games, and off season
lifting programs.(IF RULES ALLOW IT)
3. Put in a system of football that is fun and will attract all kinds of athletes.
4. Support other athletics by going to their games and trying to recruit them
(example basketball, track and baseball games).
5. Ask players already on the team to recruit at least 1 person they know to go out
for football.
6. Have a youth football camp.
Get Faculty Involved and Behind Program
1. Assure faculty the academics comes first. Ditching classes will not be tolerated
during the season and not during the season. Tardiness, messing around, and poor
attitude will also not be tolerated.
2. Support all teachers and administrators decisions on student athletes.
3. Ask faculty to help get involved on game day, example: clock timers, announcers,
chain-gang, game filmers, etc…
4. Have guest coach of the week.
Gain Support of Community and Parents
1. Reach out to local businesses and ask for support, example: ask for sponsorships;
give local businesses team pictures and Lancer athletic wear.
2. Have players and coaches do some community service activities a few times a
year.
3. Try to gain a radio show with local station.
4. Give parents a Handbook and go over the book.
5. Support parents decisions on their kids.
6. Build a great website and twitter, that highlights coaches bio’s, schedule, team
news, and important up and coming dates.
Tutoring Program/Individual Academic Plan
Incorporate a tutoring session twice a week for my athletes. I would try to ask other
teachers and students to come and provide help to the students who need help. I could
also provide individual students who are struggling in classes an academic plan during
the season and the offseason. Students with less than a 3.0 will be required to attend
during the season.
Create A Great Coaching Staff
Find coaches who are knowledgeable, have a passion for the game, but more importantly
care about the kids.
MISSION STATEMENT
1. Develop student/athletes who are committed
to personal excellence and team success.
2. Provide inspirational and motivational
environment where preparation, practice and
hard work generate legitimate opportunities for
success.
3. Emphasize the importance and development
of fundamentals and techniques necessary for
positive experiences in football and in life.
4. Create a consistently exciting and
entertaining program that generates huge levels
of support, pride, and tradition for all in our
community to share.
PLAYING PHILOSOPHY
1. THERE ARE 2 LEVELS OF FOOTBALL-VARSITY and JUNIOR VARSITY
2. TOP PERFORMING FRESHMAN/SOPHO WILL START THE J.V. GAMES.
3. THE TOP PERFORMING PLAYERS IN GRADES 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th
WILL PLAY AT THE VARSITY LEVEL.
4. STARTERS AT THE TWO LEVELS WILL PLAY UNTIL A VICTORY HAS
BEEN DEEMED SECURE OR A DEFEAT IS IMMINENT.
5. TOP PLAYERS AT EACH LEVEL WILL PLAY BOTH OFFENSE AND
DEFENSE (WE WANT OUR BEST PLAYERS ON THE FIELD).
6. THEY WILL PLAY BOTH POSITIONS ONLY IF THEY CAN OUT PERFORM
ALL OTHER PLAYERS IN THOSE POSITIONS.
Communication-Parent/Guardian/Coach
Both Parenting and coaching are extremely difficulty vocations. By establishing an
understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and
provide greater benefit to our children. As parents, when your child becomes involved in
the Cordova High School football program, you have the right to understand what
expectations are placed on your child. This begins with the communication from the
coaches.
Communication You Should Expect From Your Child’s Coach
• Philosophy of the coach
• Expectations the coach has for your child as well as all the players on the squad
• Locations and times of all practices and games
• Team requirements (i.e. fees, special equipment, off-season conditioning)
• Procedures should your child be injured during participation
• Discipline as the result of your child unable to follow team rules and expectations
Communication Coaches Expect From Parents
• Concerns expressed directly to the coach
• Notification of any schedule conflicts in advance
• Specific concern in regard to coaches’ philosophy and/or expectations *It
is important to understand there may be times when things do not go the way you or
your child wishes. At these times, discussion with the coach is encouraged.
Appropriate Concerns to Discuss with Coaches
• The treatment of your child mentally and physically
• Ways to help your child improve
• Concerns about your child’s behavior
*It is difficult to accept your child is not playing as much as you would like. Coaches are
professional. They make judgment decisions based on what they believe to be best for
all student-athletes involved.
Issues Not Appropriate To Discuss With Coaches
• Playing time
• Team strategy
• Play calling
• Other student athletes
*There are situations that may require a conference between the coach and parent. These
are encouraged. When these conferences are necessary, the following procedures should
be followed to help promote a resolution to the issue of concern.
If You Have A Concern To Discuss With A Coach
• Call to set up an appointment
• Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a game or practice.
These can be emotional times for both the parent and the coach.
What Can A Parent Do If the Meeting With the Coach Did Not Provide A Satisfactory
Resolution?
* Call and set up an appointment with the Athletic Director, to discuss the situation.
We hope this information makes both your child’s and your experience with the Cordova
Lancer football program very enjoyable.
