Planning becomes inevitable in any part of an organization as it gives an opportunity

to grow in multitudes. To improve the quality in educational institutions, planning has to be

implemented as part of every year’s agenda.

With IQAC as the center of development programs, our college after getting its

reaccreditation with “A” grade has taken steps to develop the quality of education in higher

studies.

The following are the identified areas where planning can be worked out:

Launching of new courses with the future need and the students’ interest in mind.

Adding infrastructure to already existing traditional courses.

Proper designing of the skill based courses.

Giving students an environment where they can learn what is the need.

The university also gives its suggestions for Choice Based Credit System from the

coming academic year which would definitely give room for student centered

learning.

Teachers are to be encouraged to upgrade themselves – registering for their

research, participation in seminars, conferences, symposiums, refresher courses

and orientation programs.

Encouraging teachers to apply for Projects both Minor and Major levels with the

support of UGC and other agencies.

With the same agencies, they can get assistance to organize seminars and

conferences.

With ongoing active research process, the centres of Research may handle viva-

voce sessions inside the campus itself.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:

Many activities were taken place during the academic year reflecting the goals and

objectives of the institution.

Many extension activities were taken to mitigate the rural – urban divide.

Schemes for women empowerment were carried out.

Every step was taken to incorporate the spirit of excellence in every academic and

allied activity so that the quest for excellence is sustained.

The Management has come forward with new initiatives to promote research among

the staff members and scholars like financial assistance, free internet access, e-journal

facilities, etc.,

To develop harmony and culture amidst the student community, the Management

extends its all support to College Fine Arts Club. This would also lead the students to

involve in extra curricular activities.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG):

B.Com E-Commerce:

A three year job oriented UG degree course in E-Commerce has been introduced

in the Department of Commerce to impart high-end knowledge in paperless exchange of

business information using electronic – data interchange (EDI).

Certificate / Diploma / Advanced Diploma Course in Internet and Web designing:

An add-on course for three years in Internet and Web designing has been offered in

the Department of Computer Science to educate the students in developing highly

optimized graphics for the web. This programme helps the students to gain more

knowledge in the process of conceptualization, planning, modeling and executing

electronic-media-content delivery via internet. UGC has sanctioned a one time grant of

Rs.7 lakhs for the above course.

M.Sc. Bio-Engineering:

A multidisciplinary two-year PG course in Bio-Engineering has been introduced by

the college with the financial assistance of Rs.50 lakhs from the UGC. The aim of the

course is to develop the skills of the biology students in the application of engineering

principles to address the challenges in the field of biology and medicine.

M.Phil Tamil :

A one Year Pre-research programme has been offered by the Department of Tamil

with a view to provide ample opportunities for the students to carry out research in

traditional arts and contemporary literature in Tamil.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:

Implementation of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) :

The conventional teacher-oriented education system has been replaced by the student

centered choice based credit system by the Government of Tamilnadu. Some of the salient

features of this system are mentioned below:

1. CBCS aims at standardizing the degree courses at the international level, by

prescribing a new method of evaluation through ‘Credit System’.

2. The system offers job oriented curriculum and a socially relevant education.

3. CBCS gives paramount importance to collaboration between Industry and University,

Industry and College and even suggests practical training in nearby industrial units as

part of curriculum, which should be done through “memorandum of understanding”

(MOU).

4. It has scope for more interdisciplinary subjects, takes care of students who excel in

Sports, NCC, NSS etc in a special way by awarding credits for these activities.

5. CBCS gives importance to value-oriented education involving ethics, human rights,

moral instruction, social consciousness and village development.

6. The student may enjoy a good deal of freedom in choosing their own curriculum to

fulfill their needs.

7. The student will be allowed to register for 8 credits for non-major electives, including

language courses other than Tamil and English courses of his/her choice in the under

graduate programme, and this is left completely to the student and his/her advisor.

5. Examination reforms implemented:

A question bank in the library for the use of students and staff is placed and this can

be utilized by them. Questions can be noted and worked out at home. This can not be

borrowed as it is meant for reference.

Model examinations along with periodic tests were conducted periodically to assess

the growth of standards among students in learning. Department of Physics was entrusted

with the responsibility to conduct model examinations. The conduct of examinations has to

be done by the other departments in rotation.

7. Initiative towards faculty development programme:

Ever since the departments are being upgraded as Research centers, the staff members

have got their awareness of undertaking research. The Management also encourages them to

register for their Ph.D with the recognized guides available both within the campus and

outside.

The UGC gives opportunites to undertake research by availing them two year of

leave. The college also entertains this and sends them to the respective centres.

Department of Chemistry received a grant to the tune of Rs.32 lacs from the

Department of Science and Technology under “Fund for Improvement of Science and

Technology Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST) for

further strengthening the infrastructure facilities of the department to impart good quality

higher education and enhance its visibility both nationally and internationally.

18. Community services:

The Department of Computer Science conducted a four-day Workshop on Computer

Literacy for the members of Women Self-Help Group at Krishnapuram from 5th to 8th

May, 2008.

Dr.M.Jayakumar, Department of Botany, has been recently sanctioned with a

financial assistance of Rs.40,000/- from Tamilnadu State Council for Science and

Technology to impart technical knowledge on spirulina cultivation to the select

members of the Women Self Help Group in Virudhunagar District. The proposed

training is to be conducted for a period of 7 days before the end of December 2009.

In line with the recommendations of the Honorable Apex court of India for creating

the environmental awareness among the students, the NSS and NCC units of our

college organised a one day State Level Seminar on “Environmental Protection and

Awareness” for the college students on 20th February, 2009. The event was sponsored

by Tamilnadu State Council for Higher Education, Chennai.

With the strenuous and extraordinary efforts of the YRC, NCC and NSS of our

college, several blood-donation camps have been organised at regular intervals in our

campus. Five such camps were conducted during the academic year 2008-2009 in

collaboration with Dhanasamy Parimala Devi Trust and as many as 433 units of

blood were donated for the noble cause of life saving.

Anti-tobacco day was observed on 17.09.2008 and a mass rally of students

demonstrated the evils of tobacco.

The students of our college participated in large numbers in the sapling-plantation

programme on 21st July 2008 as part of the social forestry scheme.

The NCC wing of our college, with the guidance of IQAC, has brought out a medical

booklet on ‘Diabetes’, highlighting its causes and symptoms along-with the

preventive measures to be taken. It also contains useful information relating to the

standard diet recommended by the dieticians.

A team of teachers from various faculties conducted free coaching programmes for

the final year students to enrich their competitive skills and enhance their proficiency

level to face competitive exams and interviews.

Placement cell also rendered free service to the students by offering training

programmes in various fields such as communication skills, aptitude, logical

reasoning etc.

NSS-Girls’ units have conducted many programmes on Yoga, Meditation, Mehandi-

Drawing, Nutritious food and Disciplining the Mind.

The college management, with the services of Rotary club of Virudhunagar

conducted a two-day programme on “Personality Development and Leadership

quality” exclusively for the inmates of our college hostel on 09.08.08 and 10.08.08

The college conducted various competitions like drawing, painting, rangoli etc., on

07.08.2008 in commemoration of Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day.

Our College OBA has conducted intra-departmental cultural programmes under its

banner “OBA Fantasy” for our students in the second semester of 2008-2009 and

honored the winners by presenting prizes.

Medical screening camps to diagnose diseases related to blood, eyes etc., were

conducted periodically in the year 2008-2009 and the affected students were given

proper guidance and remedies to improve their health.

Information Science” were subscribed.

Efforts are on to install a fully computerized user entry system with recent

sophisticated inbuilt technology for the convenience of the students and also for the

maintenance of the users’ entry data.

The general library utilized a trail access offered by the website, “Emerald Insight” an

e-journal for one month for various benefit of various departments. The regular subscription

of this e-journal is under consideration.

procedures and issue of various certificates.

26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:

An additional storey has been erected with a few class rooms, a laboratory and other

necessary facilities on the first floor of KCSR Block to accommodate the students of

the professional courses that come under AICTE.

A new, modern, versatile steam-cooking unit at the cost of Rs.2,34,420/-has been

installed in our college hostel.

An amount of Rs.7,35,000/- has been spent for the construction of a concrete Basket-

Ball court with flood-light facilities in our college play-ground.

One more new bus at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs has been purchased for the conveyance of

girl students coming from nearby areas.

As there is a gradual increase in the strength of the girl students in the hostel, the

management has initiated the construction work of a new ladies’ hostel at the cost of

Rs.1.08 crores, funded jointly by UGC and our College Management. The

construction work is in progress.

To provide a separate premises for the professional courses that come under the

AICTE, new classrooms and laboratories have been constructed on the first floor of

KCSR Block by the Management at the cost of Rs.12,66,000/-.

Construction work of a new Ladies’ hostel has been going on at the cost of Rs.1.08

crores. It is a joint venture in which our college management proposes to spend

Rs.28,00,000/-.

For the conveyance of the girl-students of the nearby areas, the management has

purchased a new bus worth Rs.15,00,000/-

A new concrete Basket ball court with flood-light facility has been constructed at the

cost of Rs.7,35,711/-.

To provide 3 MBPS -high speed internet facility to all the departments, the

management spent Rs.3.50 lakhs in the last year.

A steam-cooking plant has been installed in the college hostel at the cost of

Coaching classes for MBA and MCA were organized and conducted for a period of

3months from January to February. Many students were benefited from the coaching class.

On 3.4.2008 felicitation function was organized for honouring retiring staff, staff who

had completed 20 years of service, university rank holders, Ph.D awardees, NSS, NCC award

holders.

During thr Mariammam Temple festival butter milk was provided to the devotees by

joining hands with our college NSS units.

On 1st May 2008, OBA day was celebrated. On that day, organized a blood donation

camp with Dhanasamy-Parimaladevi Medical Trust Blood Bank, Virudhunagar. 30 members

of the association donated blood.

Annapoornani Ramaiah Memorial Inter University Elecution competition was held on

10.09.2008. Students from 18 colleges participated in the competitions.

An Inter Departmental Cultural Competitions “OBA-FANTASY 2008” was

organized on 8,9 and 10th September 2008. Students from all the Departments of our college

participated in the competitions.

Free medical Checkup for the non-teaching staff members in the month of December

at Jana clinical Laboratory was organized.

36. Activities of the Guidance and Counselling unit:

Like the Placement cell of an institution, it is essential to have Guidance and

Counselling Unit which decides the future of the student community. They need proper

guidance both from the parents and from the institution. Both the Placement and Guidance

and Counselling Unit provide opportunities for the student community to build the future.

This counseling unit supplies not only the confidence but also the avenues for the students.

The display board shows the avenues through which they can enter the global arena for

Our college has signed an MOU with Sutherland Global Services India Ltd., Madurai.

A resource person from Sutherland came to our college to train our teachers and also the

teachers from V.V.V. College, Virudhunagar. The Training the Trainer Programme was

conducted for three days from 7.8.2008 to 9.8.2008. A course on “Communication in

English” was conducted by the Placement & Training Officer Mr. P.Nagendravel for the

hostel girls of our college.

7. A representative from WASE (Wipro Academy of Software Excellence) namely Ms.

Priyabharathi visited our college on 17.10.2008 and gave a special lecture to our final year

students of Computer Science, Information Technology and Computer Applications.

9. A mock-interview programme was organised on 22.10.2008 for III MCA students. Dr. R.

Murugesan, Professor of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj university, Madurai visited our

college and conducted the mock-interview.

10. The Managers of HDFC Life Insurance Company visited our college on 9.1.2009 and

addressed our students and talked to them about their placement opportunities in their

company.

38.Development programmes for non-teaching staff:

Modernization becomes essential in executing official work also. The traditional

system of paper work and dispatch can not be done quickly to the demands of the day. With

that mind, the Department of Computer Science has offered programmes on MS Office and

Word. They were given chances of composing and drafting official letters.

39. Best practices of the institution

The management has appointed sufficient number of staff in permanent vacancies

which remained vacant and not filled by the Government. It has incurred an

additional expenditure of Rs.10,44,466/- in this regard.

To provide a separate premises for the professional courses that come under the

AICTE, new classrooms and laboratories have been constructed on the first floor of

KCSR Block by the Management at the cost of Rs.12,66,000/-.

To encourage students in sports activities, the management offered fee concession and

incentives to the outstanding players in various games and sports.

Incentives have been given to the teaching and non-teaching staff of our college as a

token of appreciation for their outstanding performances in the academic works.

The college management has spent a sum of Rs.2,13,000/- for motivating research –

related activities.

An entry level test was organized for the freshers to assess their competency level in

the prime areas of their study including English and General Knowledge.

Vocational programmes like fabric designing, drawing, painting etc for girl – students

have been organized.

Remedial coaching programme for SC/ST and other religious minority students was

conducted in the academic year 2008 – 2009 with financial assistance of Rs7,96,000/-

by UGC by the Department of English under the co-ordination of of Mr.R.Selvam.

Memorandum of Understanding

MoU have been signed by various departments of college with reputed concerns like

Sutherland Global Service, Chennai, Invictus Technologies, Chennai, Thiyagaraja Mills,

Madurai, and BSNL.

The Placement Cell of our college has entered into agreement with Sutherland and

Invictus to train the members in handling latest technologies and th student in equipping

themselves more employable.

The Department of Management Studies has signed an agreement with Thiagarajar

Mills for organizing in – house training and guiding projects for the career development of

the students.

The department of Physics has signed a MoU with BSNL in the field of latest updated

technology – transfer.

College Sadhana, a multidisciplinary journal

Under the auspices of our College Managing Board, the research committee

successfully launched a bi-annual multidisciplinary research Journal, “College Sadhana” in

Executing a plan is very essential in any concern and it needs to be reviewed at

different stages. The feedbacks to be collected from those who are at the receiving end and

every return has to be weighed and taken action on it. The developmental activities are to be

looked at in a peculiar way since those are necessary in any growing situation. The year plans

are to be considered for what such where planned and were the plans devised and what was

the finance planned to be invested and also the work force employed for the execution of the

same. Every year such a plan is essential to decide the future action. Of course these can be

done only with the support of University Grants Commission and its financial contribution,

other Governmental agencies like CSIR, DST, apart from the contribution of the

Management.

FUTURE PLANS

To avail more number of FDP from UGC for the benefit of staff members.

To encourage staff members to go abroad for their upgradation in their respective

fields – like Post Doctoral research with the support of Management. They will have

to be relieved on such matters.

Since the contribution of articles to the Journal College Sadhana is raising high, a plan

of making it into two – Science and Humanities – is in move.

To launch courses for the benefit of students who need not go to distant places for the

higher studies like M.Phil. programme in the Department of Management Studies.

Motivate the staff members to apply for Major and Minor Research Projects for

various funding agencies.

Placement cell will be activated to conduct more number of campus interviews and

make the students fit for the job. Modernisation has to be done in that cell which

would easily reach the global scene easily.

To strengthen the Management Studies department by organizing many programmes.

To upgrade the college library by making digitalized.

To organize inter disciplinary seminars. In that the Foreign Experts can be invited to

share the knowledge and interact.

PART C

To conduct special coaching classes to train the students for NET, SLET

examinations. Such may be extended with other fields also like TOEFL, ELTS,

GATE and so on.

To develop a herbal garden in our campus.

To organize seminars by giving international exposure.

To release a IQAC news bulletin.

To apply for the fund from UGC to develop the IQAC cell.

Subscription for the Journals/e-journals of all disciplines would add advantage to all

researchers.
