Dear Parents, Caregivers and Whanau I am constantly amazed at the talent and skill of our support staff (including administrave staff, teacher aides, caretaker and cleaners). We hold huge admiraon for the demanding and important work they carry out to support management, teachers and akonga daily. Always ready to lend a hand, support staff aend to their daily responsibilies, with a minimum of fuss. Any challenges presented are dealt with judiciously and in collaboraon, as required. They have an astounding amount of empathy, paence and understanding which is central to their respecve roles. A talented group of professionals indeed! Ka rawe support staff! This school community project is intended to educate and increase awareness of predator damage to our nave bird populaons in our local backyard. School neighbours will also be approached where schools share a boundary to support tracking and trapping iniaves carried out by schools. The schools Halo Project in Whanganui is a first and has already been started at St Johns Hill School with the support of Kevin Booth-Deputy Principal and a team of 10 Year 6 Halo students. They have been involved in tracking predators within the school boundary and recording results. The next stage is to approach neighbours who share the boundary fence with the school. They will be asked if they could host a predator tunnel with tracking cards to gather any evidence of predators within their property. This work will be untaken by the students. Tracking tunnels and cards have been supplied to the school by the Bushy Park Educaon group. Robin Paul, volunteer educator at Bushy Park is working with St Johns Hill School students along with support from Kevin Booth, Mandy Brooke, (Bushy Park Sanctuary Manager) Scoy Moore (DOC Community Ranger ) and Sara Threadgold (DOC Ranger). The framework for this iniave is based on a programme that Zealandia has iniated for schools in Wellington. The ulmate aim of the Schools Halo Project is to eradicate predators from within and beyond the school property. Our Halo team: Noah Jones, Thomas Fitzgerald, Lachie Burroughs, Zoe Bullock, Morgan Taituma-Hamilton, Olivia Gibbons, Blake Smith, Zara Jackson, Chelsea Jones, Logan Symes. Adventures on Kapi Island What a marvellous me was had by all who travelled across to Kapi Island two weeks ago. Room 1 and 2 and many parents experienced beaufully calm, warm weather. The bush was sparkling and the birds were out in numbers. Last year the weather was not kind to us which made the trip impossible. The Kapi experience has almost become a right of passage for all senior pupils before leaving St Johns. Thank you to the parents who accompanied us and looked aſter our children for the duraon of the days adventures. Many happy memories! Whanganui School Halo Project

The Halo Project is a Bushy Park Education Group initiative aimed at identifying and trapping predators in the backyard of school property.

This school community project is intended to educate and increase awareness of predator damage to our native bird populations in our local backyard.
