IntroductionVirtual Reality is the use of computerTechnology to create simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, such as helmet with screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors. The term virtual reality was coined by jaron lanier in 1987 during a period of intenseResearch activity into this form of technologyVPL(Visual programming language)research patents were later acquired by Sun micro systems in 1999

What is Virtual Reality?

The definition of virtual reality comes, naturally, from the definitions for both virtual and reality. The definition of virtual is near And reality is what we experience as human beings. So the term virtual reality basically means near-reality. This could, of course ,mean anything but it usually refers to a specific type of reality emulation. What is Virtual Reality?

History of Virtual Reality* The concept of virtual reality is basically from 1950. * Then in 1965-Ultimate Display.* 1966-HMD was Invented.* People became aware of VR in 1990.

NASA, The department of Defense and the National science foundation founded much of the research and development for virtual reality projects. $80,000 was contributed by the CIA for research purpose to Sutherland. After that in 1984, Micheal Mc greevy, a computer scientist started to experiment with virtual reality technology as path to advance human computer interface(HCI) designs. HCI still is a domination factor in research. It further led the media picking up on the idea of virtual reality withina couple of years .Jaron Lanier coined the term virtual reality in 1987. today virtual reality plays a big part in the every day lives of the worlds population. Virtual Reality Vs Augmented Reality

Virtual reality:Totally immersive environment.Sense are under control of system.Need a mechanism to feed virtual world to user.Hard to make VR world interesting.

Augmented reality:System augments the real world scene.User maintains a sense of presence in real world.Needs a mechanism to combine virtual and real worldsHard to register real and virtual

There are following types of virtual reality.

ImmersiveTelePresenceWindow on worldMixed RealityTypes of virtual reality

Immersive virtual reality Immersive VR:It is basically a feeling of involvement of the user in the virtual world .The user has no visual contact with the physical word.Often equipped with a Head Mounted Display (HMD).

Immersive virtual reality

Window on World VRWindow on world:Also called as Desktop VR. Using a conventional computer monitor to display the 3D virtual world.

Tele-presence VR Tele- presence:A variation of visualizing complete computer generated worlds.Links remote sensors in the real world with the senses of a human operator. The remote sensors might be located on a robot. Useful for performing operations in dangeroust environments.

Tele presence VR

Mixed VR:Merging the Telepresence and Virtual reality systems gives the mixed virtual reality or seamless simulation.A fighter pilot can see computer generated maps and scenes data displays in there fancy HMD that is Helmet visor or cockpit displays. In this type of virtual reality user can see, Hear virtual world and can operate that world by using Telepresence.

Applications of virtual reality

Architecture DesigningFor many years virtual reality has been used to establish models of architectural models and buildings before construction begins. It can also be used to reconstruct building which is collapsed or damaged or to determine how this happened & the steps needed prevent the situation in the future.

Medical Field

The medical field uses virtual reality in many ways. It can be used in medical studies to enable students to know the human body structure. The most common implementation of the technology is to combine images provided by other scans and merge them to present the details, using medical imaging technology This helps doctors diagnose problems without performing surgery.

Engineering & designing FieldEngineering and Design:It can be used in scientific research laboratories so that scientist can be easily research on the specific topic. VR is widely used in engineering and designing process. It gives better understanding of the design and facilitates changes wherever necessaryIt helps to reduce the time and cost factor. Examples: Building construction field.

Entertainment FieldEntertainment:

The entertainment industry is one of the most enthusiastic advocates of virtual reality, most noticeably in games and virtual worlds.

GamingFilm and theatersVirtual theme parks

Training and Manufacturing FieldIt can most widely used in Military training for the soldiers to get familiar with different areas in the battlefieldUnited states uses VR as flight simulator to train pilots. It is used in Hardware parts manufacturing field

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:Virtual reality creates a realistic world It enables user to explore places.Through virtual reality user can experiment with an artificial environment.Virtual reality make the education more easily and comfort.

Disadvantages:The equipments used in Virtual reality are very Expensive. It consists of complex technology. In virtual reality environment we cant move by our own like in the real world .

The sole objective of virtual reality is to give the user an environment as realistic as possible and a thrilling sensory experience. Web is very suitable for VR applications, but the proper technology is not yet thereVR introduces a new way of interacting with computers

Conclusion

Thanks..!!!!
