Virginia’s Western Highlands is a four county region on the western edge of the famous Shenandoah Valley along the border with West Virginia. You’ll find everything that Virginia is famous for — history, beauty, hospitality — plus a few surprises found only in the western highlands.

Craig County is the southern gateway to virginia’s Western Highlands. More than 112,000 acres of National Forest give visitors to Craig County an enormous playground for fishing, hunting, birding, camping

and hiking, including access to the famous Appalachian Trail.

the alleghany Highlands is home to two pedestrian friendly downtowns and one of the oldest covered bridges in the United States. The Alleghany Highlands is perhaps best known for its outdoor recreation, including paddling,

fishing, hiking and some of the best mountain biking in Virginia.

the County of Bath is a captivating four-season destination famous for its mineral springs, outdoor recreation and cultural arts, including the renowned Garth Newel Music Center.

Virginia’s Western Highlands has several wonderful towns, each with charm, history and hospitality, yet each with its own distinct personality.

If you think idyllic small towns are a thing of the past, guess again.


m o n t e r e yThe town of Monterey is located along Route 250, which is part of the historic

Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike that linked the Shenandoah Valley with the ohio

River. The town is situated at 2,894 feet above sea level.

m c d o W e l lAlso located along the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike approximately 10 miles from

monterey, Mcdowell was the scene of a major Civil War battle. The Battle of McDowell

took place on May 8, 1862, as part of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s campaign

through the Shenandoah Valley.

h o t s P r i n g sFamous as the location of The Omni Homestead Resort, the village of Hot springs

is a unique mix of “resort” and “rural”. In addition to shops and restaurants, this

quaint village includes a post office, market and apothecary, which have been fixtures

for over a century.

W a r m s P r i n g sJust a few miles down Route 220 is Warm springs. The community grew up around

the courthouse and the famous Jefferson Pools. the pools were known as the Warm

Springs Pools until recently, when they were renamed in honor of Thomas Jefferson

who frequented the waters.

c o v i n g t o nthe City of Covington’s rich railroad heritage is preserved in the C&O Depot,

a refurbished 1908 depot and 1890 freight depot that is now headquarters to the

Alleghany Highlands Historical Society. The city takes pride in their quality of life,

evident in the recreational and entertainment opportunities at the Jackson River

Sports Complex and the River Rock Amphitheater.

c l i f t o n f o r g eThe town of Clifton Forge features a picturesque, pedestrian-friendly downtown

where the streets are lined with locally-owned shops and restaurants. The town

embraces both its arts and culture and railroad heritage. It’s fitting that visitors can

arrive in downtown Clifton Forge via Amtrak.

P a i n t b a n kNestled in the Allegheny Mountains of northern Craig County, the historic railroad

town of Paint Bank offers travelers from all over the world great accommodations,

award winning dining, eclectic shopping and “sweet as southern tea” hospitality.

quaint town of Paint Bank 1 ,

head north on Route 18 to

Covington 2 , where you’ll

pick up Route 220 north. A few miles outside of Covington, pause

to enjoy Falling Springs Falls 3 . Soon you’ll be in the County of

bath, where you’ll pass The Omni Homestead Resort 4 and the

charming village of Hot Springs followed by the historic Jefferson

Pools 5 in nearby Warm Springs. Continue your journey to

monterey 6 in Highland County, enjoying peaceful mountain

views along the way. A right turn to head east on Route 250 will

take you through McDowell 7 , site of a major Civil War Battle.

back roads, you will love this

peaceful drive. You’ll begin

your adventure in historic New

castle 1 , just 20 minutes from

I-81 on Route 311, and wind

your way into the quiet hamlet of low Moor 2 . Then follow Route

60 Business into the charming town of Clifton Forge 3 , where

dining, art galleries and the C&O Heritage Center await. From there,

it’s more quiet country roads including Route 42 north, which winds

along the Cowpasture River. Enjoy mountain views on your way

to millboro springs where you’ll turn onto route 39 west. stay on

Route 39 until a right turn on Route 629 east. Continue on Route

629, which becomes Route 678, and heads into McDowell. Heading

west will lead to Monterey 4 while east will lead to I-81.

Rich in history and beauty. Constructed in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp Camp F24. Biking and hiking permitted, with approximately 4 hiking trails accessible from the recreation area. The 4 main trails are considered difficult, but afford the visitor possible sightings of deer and turkey as well as flowers, rock cliffs and ridgetops.

The 7-mile trail starts by crossing a swinging bridge across the Cowpasture River. It winds up Beard’s Mountain and follows the top of the mountain where you can access Douthat State Park or SR 629. From Warm Springs, take SR 39 east about 12 miles to Millboro Springs. Take SR 42 south 6 miles to SR 626. Turn right on SR 626. It becomes FDR 260 after about .2 miles. Follow FDR 260 about 2 miles to where it ends at a small parking area. The trail begins there.

Managed by American land & leisure · The Bolar Mountain area has 11 miles of trails that offer scenic overlooks and provide nice loop hikes. They are accessed from each campground by spur or connector trails. The 1.8 mile Grouse Point loop Trail leads to two outstanding views of lake Moomaw: The Grouse Point overlook and the Twin Islands overlook. The 4.4 mile Greenwood Point Trail connects Campground 3 with the Greenwood Point Campground and offers some nice views of the lake.

The park offers over 40 miles of trails. Except for the YCC and Heron Run Trails, all are designated for hiking. Many of these trails experience steep and rocky uphill and downhill with rough narrow paths that in some places run close to fairly steep drop-offs. There are 6 miles of trail in the park available for equestrian use on the Alleghany Highlands Multiuse, Equestrian State Trail. Equestrian campground and stables.

ingalls Overlook trailAt the northern end of the Warm Springs Mountain Preserve, park at the Dan Ingalls overlook, located on Route 39 just outside the village of Warm Springs. Here you will find the trailhead for the Ingalls overlook Trail. Interpretive signs along the trail (2.4-mile round trip) provide an excellent introduction to the mountain.

Jackson riverThe Jackson River offers a very diverse trout fishing opportunity. North of lake Moomaw, the Hidden Valley and Poor Farm stretches of the river offer excellent fishing for stocked trout. Very popular with the fly fishermen is the 3 mile stretch between Poor Farm and Muddy Run.

Built in 1847 of bricks burned in nearby ovens and brought to the site in saddlebags, the church has the original pews of 12” solid chestnut. The balcony was the area where slaves of neighboring landowners worshiped, and doors on either side admitted men and women separately. The church served as a hospital during the Civil War. The cemetery antedates the church and contains the burial spots of 12 Confederate soldiers. Admission: No admission. (Church is not open to the public, but interior is visible from outside)

The magnificent, naturally warm mineral springs are located in the village of Warm Springs. originally developed as a spa resort in the mid 1750’s, the first bath house (the Gentlemen’s Pool House) was opened to the public on June 1, 1761 and is now considered the oldest wooden spa structure in continuous operation in the United States. The inside octagonal wooden pool is approximately 120 feet in circumference, and holds 40,000 gallons of constantly flowing, crystal clear mineral spring water which remains a constant 98.5 degrees regardless of the outside temperature. on June 1, 1836 a separate ladies Pool House was opened, fed by a separate spring whose waters have the same properties as those which supply the adjacent Gentlemen’s Pool House.

Today, as in days past, the pools remain a popular attraction to visitors who continue to seek their healing powers and to historians interested in the architectural and historical importance of the structures. Anyone who has enjoyed a soak in these mineral rich baths understands why they have been an enduring attraction for over two centuries.

The interior features a balcony with an outside entrance by which slaves entered, and a kerosene chandelier. The exterior of Gravel Hill Church on Cumberland Gap Road has not changed since 1855.

FenWiCK Mines From New Castle, follow Rt. 615 east 5.2 miles. Turn left onto Rt. 611 for 0.1 mile to rt. 685. Turn right and continue 1.3 miles. Handicapped-accessible trails and parking areas. Fall is a great time here. look for cardinal flower, evening primrose, black eyed susan, goldenrods, Joe Pye weed, yellow root, Galax, clementis, Indian pipe, meadow beauty, and monkey flower.

Paint BanK Turn off of Rt. 311 at Paint Bank General Store along Rt. 600. These roadside ditches are best in late summer and early fall. Expect to see cardinal flower, blue lobelia, ironweed, several sunflower species, wild basil, beggarticks, boneset, skullcap, butterfly weed, sundrops and jewelweed.

Wilderness adVenture at eagle landing From New Castle, follow Rt. 615 east 6 miles to Rt. 611. Turn right, go one mile to base camp on right. Call for hiking trail maps and information. 540-864-6792.

Hall rOad raPtOr VieWing area leave New Castle on Rt. 42. Travel 11.3 miles to Hall Road. Turn left, go 1.3 miles to the top of the ridge with scenic views of migratory routes. Parking on left. 4WD vehicle recommended.

Paint BanK FisH HatCHery From New Castle, follow Rt. 311 north for 14.7 miles to state-run hatchery on the left. Turkey vultures are plentiful in summer, osprey in Sept. The gate closes every afternoon at 3:30, but guests are welcome to use parking lot and roam the property.

Paint BanK From New Castle, follow Rt. 311 north for 16 miles. Explore the branch around Tinglers Mill and the fish pond, then the gardens and Potts Creek at the Depot lodge. Drive south on Rt. 600 to Hollow Hill Farm or north on Rt. 18, which follows Potts Creek into alleghany county.

POtts MOuntain rOad Follow Rt.311 to the top of Potts Mountain, turn onto Potts Mtn. Road East. This is a 4WD-only, dirt road; great place for high-elevation sightings.

JOHns CreeK & diCKs CreeK From New Castle, take Rt. 311 north for 5 miles and turn left onto Rt. 658. After another 5 miles, Rt. 658 continues to the right following Dicks Creek to Maggie and Rt. 632 veers left along Johns Creek to Maggie. These country roads and area streams are home to a variety of wildlife, including Bald Eagles.

Blue grass Valley trail From Monterey, follow US 220 North to Route 642. Turn left (west) on Route 642 to junction with Route 640 in Blue Grass. Follow Route 640 the length of the Blue Grass Valley, crossing US 250 at Hightown. Turn left (east) on Route 84 to US 220. Follow US 220 North to Monterey.
